PRINCIPAL AND CHIEF
EXECUTIVE’S REPORT
Dr Anne Murdoch OBE
2012/13 saw many
successes for Newbury
College students. During
the year many students
achieved outstanding results
which were celebrated by
the College proving to the
individuals and their families
and friends that they have
developed high quality
skills. This was particularly
so for Engineering and Art
students who demonstrated
outstanding talents at their
end of year exhibitions.
our courses in 2012/13
and the College played a
significant part in helping
to meet the skills needs of
West Berkshire businesses
by increasing significantly
those we helped to
obtain and complete an
apprenticeship, progress to
work or undertake upskilling
for their current job. The
College again enrolled more
apprenticeships aged 16-18
years than in the previous
year.
The College moved even
closer to our vision of being
a high performing College
following very pleasing
end of year success rates.
Through whole College
attention to improving
student attendance,
retention and tracking
of achievement, student
success rates improved
again on the previous year.
Overall, success rates are
in the top five of General
Further Education Colleges
in the South East
Though a challenging year
financially, financial targets
were met in 2012/13 and we
completed the year end in
a position of having a small
surplus.
Over 4000 people attended
During the year we were
re-accredited for the Matrix
Award for Advice and
Guidance and successfully
completed a strategic
review for IiP. Feedback
from surveys suggests we
have positive, effective
and well-developed links
with industry, employers
and the community and
meet the expectations of
the awarding bodies. Our
economic impact on West
Berkshire as one of the key
employers as well as a key
provider has been calculated
at nearly £30M per year.
Support in the form of
sponsorship from employers
and local businesses
during the year has been
very encouraging given
the current economic
climate in which we work.

local businesses for their
sponsorship of equipment

each of our award events
during the year. Students
gained a great deal from
their many and various
contacts with the employers
and businesses in West
Berkshire and further afield
and their achievements are
a credit to the continuing
good relationships we
have with many of our
employers and the wider
community. The College

Chancellor of the University

great opportunity for us to
celebrate the successes of
our HE students which were
also recognised by many
employers.
Restaurant. This new College
facility will make a real
difference to students in
Catering and Hospitality and
will provide wider uses for
the local community.
In addition to the activity
focussed on our own
students, the College
played a key part in putting
employers and unemployed
people in touch with each
other through Works
Fairs, Careers Events, SME
Workshops, local Enterprise
Partnership events and a
Community Conference
attended by voluntary sector
groups.
My congratulations go to
all students involved in
this year’s achievements.
Newbury College is
established as a high quality
provider of education and
training in West Berkshire
and an employer of first
choice.
During the year, work was
also completed on the
College’s new Training
I should also like to thank

CHAIRMAN OF
GOVERNORS’ REPORT
Mr Nick Carter
As Chairman of the
Corporation Board of
Newbury College, I am
pleased to report on the
academic year 2012/13
and to highlight the many
achievements.
The primary aim for
Governors is to continuously
improve the quality of
everything we do so that we
are a Centre of Excellence
for Learning, Business and
Vocational Skills. To this end,
we can feel very pleased we
are approaching that goal
as success rates continue
to improve. We are one of
the highest performing FE
Colleges in the South East.
The increased student
successes at the College
in 2012/13 reflect well on
the effort and commitment
of all the individuals who
achieved those successes.
The Graduation Ceremony
with guest speaker Sir David
Bell, Vice Chancellor of
the University of Reading
and Award Ceremonies
with guest speaker Chris
Tarry from Hitachi Capital,
highlight our many
successes and we are
pleased to share in these
celebrations with so many of
our students, their excellent
teachers and supportive
employers. With more
new apprenticeships and
numerous new courses on
offer there is opportunity
and encouragement for
all students to reach their
personal goals at Newbury
College.
In this challenging economic
environment, we achieved
a small budget surplus in
2012/13. Given the financial
challenges we continue to
face because of Government
policy to reduce funding for
those aged 18 and over in
education, it is important
to be in a sound financial
situation. The College
also continues to make a
significant contribution to
meeting local and regional
skill requirements, including
a small growth in our
apprenticeship numbers.
We have also improved our
market share in providing
training programmes for
local businesses and surveys
of employers show a good
level of satisfaction with
training provided by the
College.
During 2012/13 we
completed work on the
building of the new Training
Restaurant and officially
opened our Construction
Training Centre, Sports
Centre and Art Gallery.
The new facilities have
significantly benefited all
our students and the Sports
Hall is now also very well

used by local community
groups. Our new facilities
add to the College’s already
outstanding partnerships,
as evidenced by Ofsted
including those with our
major funding bodies, local
employers, schools and
a variety of community
groups. Good collaboration
in sports should also enable
many more individuals to
develop all their talents as
well as enable the College
to help meet the need for
minority sports facilities not
met by other facilities in the
area.
The College’s key quality
and financial targets for
2012/13 were met and
we have put in place new
and stretching targets for
2013/14. The Governors
have every confidence these
will be met and with our
sound financial position,
the College can look to
take on new challenges.
As a lead provider in the
area, the College is able
to demonstrate that it
can help those faced by
redundancy as well as those
preparing for work, or in
need of upskilling at work,
as employment conditions
remain challenging in the
national and local context.
Governors continue to
be appreciative of the
leadership of the Principal
and Senior Team and all
the teaching and support
staff of the College. All
have combined to make
2012/13 successful. I also
give my sincere thanks to
my fellow Governors for their
continuing support to the
College.

look at the construction
site of a privately funded
£8 million development.
More than 20 students

progress on what will
be Colten Care’s 20th
dementia care home. The
visit gave many of the
students their first taste of
a ‘live’ building site, with
advice from project teams
on health and safety, tool
boxes and equipment
and the links between
plumbing and other
building trades.
George Colwell, Joint
Managing Director of
Colten Developments,
said: “This is our biggest
building project to date
involving more than 150
