The seminar was very well received by our members. ASA Northwest elected a new Board of Directors. Darrell Amberson, ASA National Chairman, joined us this year and gave us a very informative State of the Industry update at our luncheon on Saturday. Joel Baxter presented the Hunt Endowment award to Pete Bristow, representing Bristow’s Exclusive Auto Repair in Tacoma, a Pierce county member since 1995 who has never been to a retreat before. “What a great turnout, we had 15 new attendees this year that had never attended a retreat before”, quoted Jeff Lovell, President/Executive Director of ASA Northwest. Our next Semi-Annual Retreat & Management Conference will be June 19-22, 2014. This will be held in Richland, Washington at the Red Lion Hanford House. NHTSA notes that this technology will “improve safety by allowing vehicles to ‘talk’ to each other and ultimately avoid many crashes altogether by exchanging basic safety data, such as speed and position, 10 times per second.” “Vehicle-to-vehicle technology represents the next generation of auto safety improvements, building on the life-saving achievements we’ve already seen with safety belts and air bags,” said Foxx. “By helping drivers avoid crashes, this technology will play a key role in improving the way people get where they need to go while ensuring that the U.S. remains the leader in the global automotive industry.” NHTSA will release a study from a year-long pilot program on V2V in the coming weeks. The study was launched in August 2012 in Ann Arbor, Mich., with 3,000 vehicles in the “largest-ever road test of V2V technology.” This will be the first step toward developing a federal regulation on V2V policy. V2V crash avoidance technology has game-changing potential to significantly reduce the number of crashes, injuries and deaths on our nation’s roads,” said David Friedman, NHTSA acting administrator. “Decades from now, it’s likely we’ll look back at this time period as one in which the historical arc of transportation safety considerably changed for the better, similar to the introduction of standards for seat belts, airbags and electronic stability control technology.” NHTSA highlights that V2V communications can provide the vehicle and driver with “360-degree situational awareness to address additional crash situations – including those, for example, in which a driver needs to decide if it is safe to pass on a two-lane road (potential head-on collision), make a left turn across the path of oncoming traffic, or in which a vehicle approaching at an intersection appears to be on a collision course. In those situations, V2V communications can detect threats hundreds of yards from other vehicles that cannot be seen, often in situations in which on-board sensors alone cannot detect the threat.” Once the NHTSA report is made available on V2V communications, the Automotive Service Association (ASA) will post the information on its legislative website, www.TakingTheHill.com. The Automotive Service Association is the largest not-for-profit trade association of its kind dedicated to and governed by independent automotive service and repair professionals. ASA serves an international membership base that includes numerous affiliate, state and chapter groups from both the mechanical and collision repair segments of the automotive service industry. ASA advances professionalism and excellence in the automotive repair industry through education, representation and member services. Many companies focus so much on new prospects that they neglect existing customers, so make sure to focus on them as well, she writes. "You can have the best product or service on the market, but if there's a snag somewhere in your customer experience, your target buyer is sure to get stuck," Casagrande writes. He asked several entrepreneurs for recommendations on leveraging the strengths of each individual while offering them flexibility as to how they complete their work. "Outline your expectations for a new type of assignment, and then let your employees complete it however they are most comfortable within certain boundaries," said Alexandra Levit of Inspiration at Work. Before getting started, "determine how many of your tweets will be about business and how many will be about other interesting items that may draw a reaction from your followers or friends," he recommends.
