Join us for this late night cardio class that blends a variety of cardio formats (step,
kickboxing, dance, Hi/Lo) with sculpting for a dynamic, calorie-burning workout.

Linda, Cindy, Lynn, Liz and Ali
Linda, Cindy, Lynn and Liz are a tight-knit group.
After training individually with other WAC
trainers—even at some other WAC locations,
they decided to do group training. They inspire
each other to work harder and longer, even
when they have aches and pains. “Not only is
working out good for you,” says Lynn, “having
other people to do it with gives you something to
look forward to. Everyone is very supportive of
each other, and we’ve become familiar with each
other’s limitations.”
They love the camaraderie. When they’re not
training with Ali, they jump in on a Ringside or
Fit Club class. They even meet up outside of the
WAC. “I’ve become friends with Cindy, Linda and
Liz,” says Lynn. “We’ve gone out to restaurants,
participated in Norwex showings, and taken
walks together.” And even in hard times, they
are there to build each other up. “These women
rock! I’m lucky to have found them,” says Lynn.
Angie, Leah, Randi, Shauna,
Steph, Sue and Anthony
When Angie, Leah, Randi, Shauna, Steph and Sue
wanted to really push their bodies, they joined
Anthony’s high-intensity interval training (H.I.I.T.)
group. While some knew each other from other
classes or clubs, they really bonded under Anthony’s
group training. “Anthony does an amazing job of
having a group feel,” says Randi. “If one of us quits,
we all start over. We’re not going to let friends down.
It’s fun to laugh and work together.”
Working as a team has kept them motivated and
excited to come to the club. “Being part of a group has
been a great motivator. [I] love the encouragement,”
says Shauna. And while they haven’t been together
for very long, they can all agree that working together
really brings up their performance and pushes them
to go further. “We’ve never been this sore. It has
challenged us mentally and physically,” says Steph,
“and has made us stronger.”

If you’re getting married, a member of a
wedding party or just attending a wedding or

Stop by the Wauwatosa WAC on a Tuesday or Friday and you might find Elise,
Mary, Lori, Amy, Jess, Leslie, Michelle and Liz working together to set up stations
or running as a group on the treadmills. After meeting together in classes and
programs at the WAC, these women decided to pool their fitness knowledge and
create a regular workout group. They all take turns crafting and planning workouts.
“We all seem to like the same intensity and we all chime in,” says Elise. “It goes very
smoothly.”
Having a steady group really keeps them accountable. They’ve found that it is much
easier to get to the gym when they know the group is meeting. They push each
other to do better, to reach further, to dig deeper. “I believe we are all in better
shape thanks to our workouts together,” says Elise. From Tabata to intervals to
stations, switching up exercises and leaders always keeps it fresh. “We really try
to incorporate all the equipment we have access to into our workouts. [There is]
such a nice variety of equipment to use. It’s kind of fun to try something new every
week,” says Elise.
Even when they’re not at the WAC, they like to get together; they’ve had lunches,
kids playdates and dinners out. “I really would consider all of the ladies I workout
with good friends. I’m so glad we have all come together,” says Elise.

Maddy’s Treading class is a club favorite at Greenfield, and
these Treading classmates have become excellent workout
companions and good friends. Each came to the class in
a different way, but this group has found they all have the
same workout style and that working together keeps them
coming back week after week. “Amazingly, we are various
ages, yet we feed off the energy of each other to reach our
goals,” says Jan.
These men and women challenge each other each week.
“Maddy is a great coach and motivator. She comes to class
prepared with a new challenge every time,” says Steve.
They motivate and inspire one another to keep moving
forward. “[We] push each other to the max. I get very
good workouts that I may not have gotten alone,” says Jim.

Even after class is over, the group gets together to run in
local races. From the Lucky Leprechaun 7K in Wauwatosa
to the Brewers Half Marathon, they train together and
compete together. “We inspire each other, cheer each
other on and celebrate after the race,” says Tracy, “It is
all good.”

Rod and Kristen
After Rod injured himself training for a race, he was referred to a Personal
Trainer to help him train properly and without injury. He started training
with Kristen Griffin who provided the support and education to help him
train successfully. With each session his injury and strength improved.
“The training was both fun and challenging. My confidence grew with her
support to the point where I reached all the goals we set for running,” says
Rod.
Now that he was back on track, Kristen recommended that he incorporated
a different cardio workout to his routine. He started taking Cycle, Interval
and Core. “These classes are so much fun, and the instructors are great,
says Rod. “I met more members and started feeling more connected to the
club and its staff.”
Staff and members started inviting Rod to activities outside of the gym. “I’ve
attended fundraisers, ran races as part of a team and joined a volleyball
team with staff, like Carly Malison, and other WAC members,” says Rod.
They’ve participated in several events, like the Rock & Sole Race, the
Brewers Mini Marathon, Bastille Days, and the Lakefront Discovery Run.
Being so connected with other members keeps Rod motivated. Rod
adds,“The whole staff and members make going to the gym so enjoyable,
and I actually look forward to going every day!”
Fred, Joyce, Rick, Linda, Tom, Sandy,
Joe, Karen, Mary, Bob and Jan
Jan Boberschmidt has been teaching Water classes at
the WAC for 21 years. Over time, many of her class
participants have made life-long friends. Meet Fred,
Joyce, Rick, Linda, Tom, Sandy, Joe, Karen, Mary and
Bob. They are a Monday-Wednesday water aerobics
group that has been exercising together for years, and
their friendship goes far beyond the workout.
It probably started with a drink after class, but now
this group regularly meets outside of class—and even
outside of the WAC. From Christmas and Valentine’s
Day to Cinco de Mayo and the Summer Olympics, this
group never misses an opportunity to get together. They
have relays and play games in the pool, then meet in the
Club Pub for a potluck. They also stop by each other’s
houses for an occasional lunch or dinner. A few years
ago, they were even featured in the Waukesha Freeman
when one of their fellow class-goers turned 90.

Staying Hydrated
During Your Workout

Saturday morning is finally here, and you’ve had this day marked on your
calendar for months. Whether today is your first half-marathon, a 90-minute
WAC Cycle ride or your company’s annual 5K run/walk, you are totally
prepared. You have followed your trainers exercise plan, enjoyed your favorite
carb-loaded pasta the night before and even had the best eight hours of
sleep you can remember. What could possibly sabotage your day of fitness?
Dehydration.
Water is the most essential nutrient for life; it helps us regulate our body
temperature and lubricate our joints. Not getting enough water can cause
muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. It is important
to keep hydrated during exercise to keep your body moving. Because there
is wide variability in the hydration levels of individuals, it is nearly impossible
to provide specific recommendations, but here are some general guidelines:
Are your kids home from school for the summer?
Upgrade your membership to include minors,
and your children under 22 will have access
to the club for the summer. For students over
22 and non-members, we’re bringing back
our Student Summer Membership. Qualifying
students can sign-up for a 3-month membership
and take advantage of a hot summer rate.

Health Rewards Programs
More and more employers and insurance
groups are offering health rewards programs. If
you need to know how many times you’ve visited
the club, simply stop at the Front Desk. We can
pull up to 60 days of usage. If you’re curious
about health rewards programs, check with your
employer or insurance provider to find out if your
plan includes club membership reimbursement
or rewards.
■ Drink 8-10 fl oz 30 minutes before exercise
■ Drink 8-10 fl oz every 10-15 minutes during exercise
■ If exercising longer than 90 minutes, drink 8-10 fl oz of a sports drink
(with no more than 8 percent carbohydrate) every 15 - 30 minutes
■ Drink 20-24 fl oz water for every 1 lb lost during exercise
■ Consume a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein within the 2 hours after exercise to replenish glycogen stores.

In 2013, Bill and a group of other WAC trainers and members started training for
the Tough Mudder race. He was looking for a fun yet challenging group event,
and that seemed like a great fit. They trained together and met in Cascade,
Wisconsin to compete. But, electroshock obstacles aside, they found that even
the Tough Mudder race wasn’t tough enough for them. So they decided to
attempt a more competitive event in Chicago: The Men’s Health Urbanathlon.
After competing—and doing extremely well—in the 2014 Urbanathlon, now
begins their training for a new season. They meet twice a week to train; they’ll
do intervals on the Woodway treadmills or jump in a Tread & Train class, and
then follow that up with Janet’s H.I.I.T. or core workout. Each weekend, they
meet at Concordia University to take on the stairs. “What a great way to wake
up on a Saturday or Sunday,” says Bill, “We have a routine that takes one hour—
and you leave feeling it!”

Their hard training pays off. “Last fall, we realized that we are actually very
competitive on a regional level,” says Bill. “Having two of the group in the top 5
(Erin placed 1st) of their age categories at the Urbanathlon in Chicago, verified
[that] our training efforts were working well.” Their goal this year is to keep
improving, and working together as a team keeps them motivated. “It helps to
endure the pain of higher level training when you see others struggle with you,”
says Bill. “I think we all are seeing great progress in our fitness goals.”

the front of your knee
while working out?
Exercise Your Brain!

Many people think that pain in the front of your knee or
around your kneecap is normal when participating in an
exercise program, especially when you are doing a lot of
lower body strengthening. Stop! This is not normal! The
good news is that pain in the front of your knee during
exercises such as squats, lunges, leg press and step ups can
be from a variety of sources of which most can be addressed
by simply tweaking your routine or focusing on form.
Things to think about...
Form: Most pain can be alleviated by making sure you
are using proper form with exercises. In general, the knee
should never go forward over your toes and never drop in
towards the midline.
Hip and core strength: These are areas that are
commonly overlooked and play a big role with knee
alignment and force distribution. Simply add some abdominal
stabilization and clamshell exercises to your routine.
Flexibility: The common areas of tightness include the
IT band, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves and hip flexors. It’s
important to incorporate stretching and foam rolling into
your routine. Remember, you never want to stretch a cold
muscle! It is important to warm up appropriately.

Jonathan, Cristin, Charlie,
Theo, Louisa and Violet
Hello! My name is Violet and I’m 4 years old. I love playing with
Legos and American Girl dolls. I have three older siblings. My
brother Charlie is the oldest—he’s 12. He’s in 6th grade and
likes theater, music and reading. My other brother Theo is 9
and is in 3rd grade. He likes Legos (like me!) and video games.
Both of my brothers like Pokémon. Louisa is 7 and she’s in 1st
grade. She likes music, coloring and art. Charlie wants to be a
teacher when he grows up, Theo wants to be a Lego designer,
Louisa wants to be a mommy… I don’t know what I want to
be—I’m only 4! Dad is a laryngologist (that’s a fancy word for
throat surgeon) and an assistant professor at Froedtert/MCW.
Mommy hangs out with us kids. We all love going to the WAC.
Mom likes to do strength training, Yoga and water aerobics.
Dad likes cardio fitness and strength training. My brothers
like the teachers at the Kids’ Clubhouse, and Lousia and I like
playing with the other kids. Our family lives in Wauwatosa and
we love it there! We go to movies, try new restaurants and go
to fairs and festivals. Our family is pretty great!

About the organization:
Sand Castle Field Services is a small to medium-sized organization,
located in Brookfield, WI. As a business, we strive to be friendly
and family oriented. Our culture reflects that, and we are always
looking for new ways to take care of our employees, both mentally
and physically.

The beginning of the year is always a
good time to focus on health, which is
what triggered our interest in starting
a wellness program. Working in an
office environment, it’s easy to fall into a
sedentary lifestyle. This is what we are
trying to avoid by creating this wellness
initiative.
We teamed up with the West Allis WAC for our current wellness
program. It will run a total of eight weeks, ending in April, and
consist of 8 Friday nights of fun classes. The class offers a variety
of WAC programming, allowing our employees to find their fitness
groove.
How has partnering with the WAC helped
your wellness program?
We have found working with the WAC to be a very positive
experience. The West Allis General Manager, Trish Beatty, has

participation. This is the largest group we’ve been able to organize
so far. We hope to continue this trend. Employee engagement
is very important to the program’s success. We hope that by
providing prizes that are also wellness related, we will continue
employee engagement for future programs.
What’s in store for the future?
We are hopeful that we can continue to be successful in engaging
our workforce in a healthy lifestyle and will be offering wellness
initiatives throughout 2015.

Once you bring your fresh local produce home, the real fun
begins. There are endless delicious ways to prepare nutritious
vegetables and fruits for summer meals. Perhaps the easiest
use of fresh produce is in summer salads. By blending bold
colors and flavors, you can create many delicious main dishes
and sides without a recipe. Just add a flavorful dressing.
Ahh, the simple pleasures of summer! Tomatoes start tasting
like tomatoes instead of cardboard, and a wide variety of
locally sourced produce reappears on grocery shelves and in
farmers markets throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. What are
the benefits of eating locally grown fruits and vegetables?
Fresh produce has better flavor. When food is transported
long distances, it is often picked before it ripens. As a result,
flavor does not have a chance to naturally develop completely.
Hard, dry, flavorless tomatoes in the middle of winter are good
examples; they lack the full, rich flavors and tender, moist
texture of in-season tomatoes grown locally.
If you need an idea to fire up your creativity, try this fresh
summer salad that incorporates heirloom tomatoes and beets.
It’s simple, colorful, and packed with good nutrition.
Eating local is more economical. When you buy what is
growing now, you are usually choosing from a larger supply,
which means the price tends to be lower than if the same
produce is purchased when in short supply.
The nutritional quality of local produce is better. When food is
sold close to where it is grown, it is simply fresher than when
it is transported from far away and stored for a longer time
before sale. That means it is more nutritious as well. Less time
between harvest and your table brings more nutrients to you
and your family.
The best way to know how your food was grown is to grow it
yourself, but there are other good options. If gardening doesn’t
excite you, visit a local farmers market or join a Community
Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm.
Heirloom Tomato Beet Salad

2 medium-sized red beets
2 medium-sized golden beets
3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
2 tablespoons chopped fresh tarragon
2 tablespoons chopped shallots
1 tablespoon capers
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
3 cups heirloom cherry tomatoes,
halved

2 pounds heirloom tomatoes, sliced
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Preparation
1.Preheat oven to 400°.
2.Trim roots and stems from beets. Pierce beets with a fork, and wrap in foil. Bake at 400° for 1 hour or until tender. Cool; peel beets and cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices.
