WELCOME FROM THE
CHJA EQUITATION COMMITTEE
ABOUT THE JUDGES FOR THE
2009 CHJA MEDAL FINALS
Scott Hofstetter currently resides at his farm, Copley Place
in Ocala, Florida, where he owns and operates a full care
hunter/jumper training facility.
On behalf of the Equitation Committee of the Connecticut
Hunter and Jumper Association, welcome to all the riders,
families, and trainers! Last year was our 25th anniversary,
and as we start our next 25 years, we have put together a
Finals Weekend that is sure to be enjoyable for all. All the
familiar elements are in place; accomplished judges, great
courses, wonderful prizes for all, a super program that is a
true keepsake, the scrumptious complimentary buffets,
an accommodating schedule, and a beautiful setting at the
Fairfield County Hunt Club.
The past year has been a challenging economic time for
everyone, but we have worked very hard to make sure
Finals weekend will still represent a little bit of magic in
your show season. Everyone who qualifies has put great
effort into coming here, and you deserve the recognition.
So look for a few surprises this year!
We hope you will have the time (and the ride!) of your life this
weekend, and we are very thankful for your support of the
CHJA. While you are here, we hope you will remember to give
a kind word to everyone who made it possible – your family,
your trainer, your horse, your vet, groom and farrier, all our
incredibly generous sponsors, the CHJA volunteers (they are
all so professional, you may forget they are volunteers!), and
lastly, YOURSELF! Have a great weekend!

As a junior rider, Scott won the 1986 ASPCA Maclay Equitation
Finals. Now a professional, Scott is one of the country's leading
hunter riders and judges.
T H E C O N N E C T I C U T H U N T E R & J U M P E R A S S O C I AT I O N
Todd Karn, a horse lover as long as he can remember,
started riding Western at eight years old, but switched to
English by the time he was ten. Through his junior years
he rode with Carol Molony and Kip Rosenthal, “two people
that have become life long friends.” He never owned his
own horse as a junior, and worked in the family’s store to
afford entry fees. But in 1976 he borrowed a retired horse
from a friend, and under Kip’s very patient eye, qualified
and rode in the Medal and Maclay Finals.
Todd rode while at Bennett College in Millbrook NY, and
soon after launched his professional career, starting at the
Ox Ridge Hunt Club. He has ridden many talented horses,
including “Chital,” a hunter purchased from Mr. & Mrs.
William Steinkraus that excelled in the zone and placed at
the National Horse Show in Regular Working Hunters.
There was also “The Wizard,” the 1994 Regular Conformation
Hunter Champion at Devon, owned by the late Anne E.
Dyson, a friend and wonderful client.
Todd received his judge’s card at the age of 25 and has judged many top shows, among them The
Hampton Classic, Capital Challenge, Middleburg National, and the New England Medal Finals. Todd
resides in Fayetteville, NY, near Syracuse, and continues to show, teach and bring along young prospects.

Tripp Meadow Farm Qualifiers
& Hanson Keene
To be judged on performance and soundness, suitability and manners to count. To be scored under the
open numerical judging system using two judges. Each competitor will jump one round of approximately
ten fences. The twelve horses with the highest scores from the first round will return to jump a second
round over a different course. In the event of equality affecting the selection of the top twelve, all those
equal will qualify. The scores of the horses in the second round will be added to the first round scores
and placed in order of their total score for the two rounds. Horses tied for first place only will jump a third
round over a shortened course. Ties for all other places will remain tied. To be shown over a course of
approximately ten jumps not to exceed 3' in height with spreads to 3'. Small/medium ponies to jump 2',
