March was an exciting month for the Chamber of Commerce. We had and still do have lots of events going on however, the biggest event we have every March is the Greater Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce Business Network-Taste Expo! It was so exciting to be a part of it, as the Chair for this event for the 3rd consecutive year I have seen the changes and it is Amazing!!! This year we added the educational seminars, which were a success and my imagination tells me they will be a growing success in the years to come. The attendance in both vendors and patrons was great and I believe it was the largest yet! Like I mentioned, I have had the honor of Chairing the Business Expo for the past three years. It has been so much fun and I really have to say, these types of events like many events, cannot be done without the help of about 20 others! The volunteers were amazing! I would like to thank the volunteers from the Board of Directors, Chamber Ambassadors, and students from Tampa Bay Tech and this year we had students from Florida College lend a hand also. Of course, we all know what a great job Kara and Lee do in the office however, we now know how awesome they are on a bigger scale. My Co-Chair this year Dale Dye, from Florida College, will take the helm next year and I know it will continue to grow and continue to be a huge success. Thank you for such a successful three years and next year you will see me participating on a different level and sitting in the educational seminars hopefully, next to you!!! It is kind of hard to tell when spring arrives here, but all the visitors is how I can tell. I am continuing my series of articles about networking (www.create180design.com/7-key-pointsto-making-a-buisness-networking-group-work-for-you), we are on step six; “Don’t try and sell directly to the group” Here is a list of the 7 Key Points To Making A Business Networking Group Work for You: 1. Brand Yourself 2. Avoid Cliques 3. Perfect Your Elevator Spiel 4. Use your group to build your social media presence and solicit feedback 5. Know the difference between business networking and personal socializing 6. Don’t try and sell directly to the group 7. It takes time to see results from your networking group How many time have you been to a networking event and you meet someone for the first time. They immediately ask you for your business card, hand you their business card and start bombarding you with their sales pitch. Annoying isn’t it? Happens to me a lot. Yes, I am interested in who they are and what they do. But let’s start with a pleasant conversation to get to know each other first. Not a sales pitch. “Don’t try and sell directly to the group” means just what it says. As the article states, “Your fellow business networking members are meant to be your sales team. You educate them each week on your products and services, building trust and confidence with one another so that when the opportunities arise, qualified referrals will come your way”. My best business has always come from referrals. That is what networking is all about! Next month I will cover the final key point number seven, “It takes time to see results from your networking group”. Go network! Build your referral sales team! Lee Bell President/CEO 813-989-7004 [email protected] www.templeterracechamber.com 5 GTTCC Military Affairs Committee The Military Affairs Mission Statement “The Greater Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee is dedicated to serving and supporting the military, past and present, through facilitating education, communication and partnerships.” With that statement in mind, I would like to share with you two of the programs I have been visiting. Tampa Crossroads and DAACO (Drug Abuse and Comprehensive Coordinating Office). I know this probably brings to mind PTSD, drugs and possibly several other conditions which are, or may be, affecting our military. However, I was surprised that this is not always the case. I recently passed on to a business colleague, a resume, which was so impressive that he called the young man. Being retired military he understood more than I what this young man has been up against returning to the work force. There are numerous others I had the privilege to discuss with the administrators of both of these organizations. One of the things I learned is one of the most concerning misunderstandings in the general public - PTSD. Part of our committee’s mission statement is education. I am hoping in the near future to invite one or both of these organizations to help educate the business community in the Greater Temple Terrace area. The more educated we are, the more capable we will be to help the returning veteran find a job. Rebecca Williams, Bay Area Plumbing, Inc. Our office is designed with the clients needs in mind. More than 46.5 million children participate in sports each year in the United States according to Safe Kids Worldwide, and while all athletes are advised to follow the appropriate training and safety protocols, spring athletes face some specific seasonal challenges. “There are certainly safety and prevention techniques that are applicable to all youth athletes – items such as proper stretching, hydration and wearing appropriate protective gear,” said Steven Martin, MD, for MedExpress. “But each season also has its own unique safety considerations.” To stay healthy this spring sports season, MedExpress physicians remind parents and athletes of the following tips: Allergies – For many, spring means seasonal allergies related to the increasing pollen load. Playing outdoor spring sports increases opportunities to come in contact with substances that cause allergic responses. Athlete allergysufferers should keep windows and doors closed at home to prevent pollen from coming into the house when they aren’t playing, and shower before bed to remove allergens that might cause irritation overnight. Repetitive Motion Injuries –Baseball, softball, track/field and tennis require the use of specific muscles over and over again, which can result in overuse. Stretching before activity is important to release muscle tension in these highly-used muscle groups. Encourage rest and at least one or two days off per week. Sports Physicals - A thorough sports physical is always an important first step prior to physical activity. Sports physicals raise awareness of any issues that may interfere with a child’s ability to participate in a sport and can help identify areas prone to injury. As a neighborhood medical center, MedExpress offers a broad scope of urgent care, occupational health and wellness and prevention services and works to coordinate care with other area health care providers. MedExpress centers are staffed by a full medical team and are open 12 hours a day, seven days a week with no appointment needed. Temple Terrace, FL 33617 www.BulluckLawGroup.com Conquer your Spring Weight Loss Slump! Where there is a will there is a way…but where did your will for your New Year weight loss resolution go? Did you start off strong but life got in the way and now you have dropped your resolution all together? Don’t feel bad, this is known as the Spring Slumps. What separates success in weight loss this year from any previous year is pushing through that Spring slump and getting back on track. If you find yourself in the Spring Slumps, try these tips to help you overcome them and succeed: 1- Recommit to your weight loss resolution in all ways…write it down, post in on FaceBook, a sticky note on your fridge etc. The more affirmation, the more accountability you create for yourself. 2- Visualize yourself in your desired shape and visualize your weight loss numbers. Most of us are visual learners, so your goal will seem more achievable if you visualize yourself in your new shape. 3- Plan, plan, plan!! You cannot give up your life to exercise and diet 24-7. Therefore you must incorporate your diet and exercise into your life and that takes planning. Prescreen the menu and pick out what you are going eat ahead of time. Analyze your schedule and find spots where you can do exercise, anything is better than nothing. 4- Lastly, if you find yourself reaching for that unforgiving cookie…immediately stop, delay (tell yourself you will eat the cookie in 10 minutes) distract (example: go fold laundry) and drink water….by the time you finish folding laundry and drinking your water, you will not want that cookie anymore! Sometimes, extra clinical attention, guidance and a form of accountability is needed for an individual to get serious about losing weight.
