RADCLIFFE.
T) ADCLIFFE is a town and parish 7 miles IS". N. W. of Manchester and 2j miles S. S. W.
J-* of Bury, containing 2,466 acres of land. The population in 1851 was 6,293, and in
1861, 8,840.' The name of this place is old English and is derived from a cliff of red rock
on the south-east side of the river Irwell, below the confluence of the Roach, and opposite to
the village of Radcliffe. The principal branches of trade carried on here comprise cotton
spinning, calico printing, and the manufacture of ginghams, nankeens, checks, fustians,
smallwares, ironfounding, machine making, &c. There are also several collieries in the
parish. Radcliffe is separated from the township of Pilkington by the river Irwell, over
which is a bridge of two arches. The Roman Watling street and the Bolton and Bury
Canal pass through the parish, and here is a station on the East Lancashire Railway. The
town is supplied with gas by the Radcliffe and Pilkington Gas Co., which was established in
1845. The church dedicated to St. Mary is an ancient structure built at different periods,
and is in various styles of architecture, with a low square tower, was restored in 1845, and

a north transept was added in 1846 by subscription. The benefice is a rectory in the
patronage of the Earl of Wilton. St. Thomas' (Chapel of Ease), is a substantial stone
building erected in 1819 at a cost of £5000, by the Dowager Marchioness of Westminster.
There are chapels for Independents, Roman Catholics, and other denominations,, a list <of
which are given below, with their respective ministers. Radcliffe Tower, now in ruins,
was one of the most considerable manorial residences in the county ; there is no precise
information as to its date, but it appears that Richard Eadcliffe, high sheriff of Lancaster
(32 Edward III.), was of Radcliffe tower, as was his successor William de Eadeclive, one of
the Knights of the Grand Inquest of Henry IY. The Park attached to it stretched for
some distance along the vale of the Irwell. The Market house was erected in 1851 at a
cost of about £1500 by the Earl of Wilton, but is not used. An agricultural show is held
here annually on September 28th. Eaces about the middle of August, and Fairs on the
29th and 30th of April, for horses and horned cattle, and on the 28th and 29th of Septem
ber, for wool, cloth, and pedlary.
