CAVENDISH NEWS THE CAVENDISH SCHOOL 31 INVERNESS STREET LONDON NW1 7HB TEL: 020 7485 1958 EDITOR: Robert Pritchett and Jasmine Walton THE CAVENDISH NEWS Friday 20th November Issue 10 AUTUMN TERM 2015 From the Headmistress Dear Parents, We raised over £600 for the Fetukai School in Vanuatu from last week’s Mufti-day and the Year 4 Cake Sale. It is being saved for the contact we have who returns after Christmas. The circus skills assembly on Tuesday morning where the girls demonstrated their prowess on the ropes was really inspiring. I wish I could do some of the moves they showed us! Year 5 pupils have been receiving second hand toys, books and stationery all week for today’s after school sale. This has been a pupil initiative, largely planned and carried out by the girls themselves. The intention is to split the proceeds between the International Medical Corps and Cancer Research. Due to bad weather yesterday the Second Hand Uniform Sale was postponed and both sales took place today. I am looking forward to the Orchestra concert next week and the Christmas Decorations going up on Friday. The Nativity scene will be featured with Year 6 artwork in the entrance hall so do take a detour to see it. We are hoping the weather improves so that our carol singers can serenade you leaving the school, towards the end of term. Have a safe and very enjoyable weekend! COMPOSER OF THE WEEK Peter Tchaikovsky May 7, 1840 - November 6, 1893 Piotr (or Peter, as we would say in English) Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, a town in Russia's Ural Mountains. When he was 8 years old, his family moved to the capital city of St. Petersburg. Even though Tchaikovsky was a good musician as a child, it wasn't considered an "acceptable" profession, so his parents made him study law instead. But even in law school, Tchaikovsky continued to study music. Eventually, he gave up his legal job and went to the St. Petersburg Conservatory. After he graduated, he moved to Moscow to teach at the new conservatory there. It's now named after him. For years, Tchaikovsky had a patroness named Madame von Meck -- a wealthy widow who was a big fan of his music. She regularly sent him money so that he could concentrate on composing without having to worry about making a living. But Madame von Meck didn't want to meet Tchaikovsky. For 14 years, they only communicated by writing letters to each other. Tchaikovsky dedicated his Fourth Symphony to his patroness. Tchaikovsky travelled all over Europe for performances of his music. In the last year of his life, he visited England and received an honorary degree of musical doctor from Cambridge University.
