Principal’s Report
As we move toward the end of Term 2,
there are so many congratulations deserved
in this newsletter for many students and
staff. We have ensured that each
achievement/event has its own article in this
and future editions, so the students/staff
involved in the various activities receive the
full attention they deserve.
In the past weeks we have been proud of our
• Maths Team Challenge winners. Our Year 8 team (7’s
last year) won again this year against all other
secondary schools in Bundaberg, and one of our
other teams placed second. Our Junior Secondary
team placed second and congratulations to our
Senior team who also won. More results to follow.
• The chess team which was exceptional in the recent
Chess comp, with Alex Buckholz placing third, just in
front of Josh Howard. Merit ribbons were earned by
Isaac Cooper, Reece Buckholz and Brenton McHale.
• Recent Rostrum finalist, Alex Buckholz was a
fabulous BSHS representative at the Regional finals
held in Maryborough. We are all proud of his efforts.
• Cricketers and their efforts in their recent knockout
comp.
• Students who submitted baking, plants and art work
at our recent show, please take pride in your
achievements and by the way, I am always happy to
sample your baking, just to ensure it is to standard!

• Rowers have just completed Head of River and as
always they did us proud. Our parents have been
amazing support this year and we thank them for
their ongoing commitment to early and late trainings
and making sure students are where they need to be.
To the parents who assisted with boat loading,
unloading, events on the days, on canteen, and from
the bank as part of the amazing cheer squad, I know
the students very much appreciate your support. We
have parents and students who continue to fundraise
each Friday night at bingo to ensure students have
every opportunity to compete. Full results of Head of
River will be in the next newsletter.
• Staff and students who last week completed our VET
audit with the Queensland Curriculum and
Assessment Authority. Audits are a massive
undertaking and our staff worked tirelessly to ensure
we were ready for the visit. Our students are
extremely fortunate to have access to the courses
our staff provide.
• Students fundraising activities. Cupcake Day, with
proceeds to Edon Place was very successful, thanks
to our parent support, the Instrumental Music Trip to
Winton fundraising has continued with almost $1000
raised through selling fudge, and our Bunnings BBQ
for the Japan Trip raised in excess of $1200, with
wonderful support from our P&C.
• Rapid Reading program and the results staff have
achieved through the program in such a short time.
• Students who participated in the PCYC Road Craft
trial last week. Their feedback regarding the benefits
of the program to young drivers was heartening.
• Students who step out of their comfort zone and
apply for programs that can add value to their future
options. Tahlia Clowes is our latest student to do
that, with her successful application to the SID Winter
School program for indigenous students being held
in Brisbane. Joel Maly has been selected to attend
the “Solid Pathways” camp on Stradbroke Island. In
addition, 9 students have just been successful in their
nominations for obtaining a place in the 2016 High
School Health Career Programme (Work Experience)
at Bundaberg Hospital. This is a highly contested
placement and our students successful in the next 2
rounds are Mica Lumsden, Chauna Mackinnon, Cya
Porth-Hartwell, Kirie South, Hannah Turner, Sarah
Watson, Kynan Zielke, Jackson Morris, Marley
Smithson.
• Project Partners such as Wyld Projects who, through
their support of students, have enabled students to
be awarded apprenticeships, and part time work!
Recent Chaplaincy Week celebrations
We could not do what we do for our students without the
support of our Student Services team who work tirelessly
to make a difference every day for every student.
Chaplaincy week is a week that reminds us of how fortunate we
are to have staff such as Lynne and Craig. We need to remind
ourselves each day however, that these two, and all our staff
in student services make our school a better place because of
the work they do to support all of us. On behalf of the staff and
students at BSHS, thank you for all you do for us Chappy Lynne
and Chappy Craig.
The innovative programs that our Student Services staff deliver,
along with programs from our partnerships with other local
organisations, ensure our student’s learning is ongoing.
Rides that thrill: We’ve got data!
Last Wednesday the year 11 Physics group had its big day out
at Dreamworld. We weren’t just there for fun, we came armed
with accelerometers to measure the g-forces on three of the
biggest, tallest and fastest thrill rides in the country.
Data from The Giant Drop, a jaw dropping 119 metre plummet
at extreme speed is the closest thing our students got to actual
skydiving, is shown below. The altitude wasn’t calibrated, so
the exact numbers aren’t correct, but you can see what
matters; the relative changes in altitude. Don’t let the leisurely
rise above sea level with nearly 360o views fool you, those 5
seconds of free fall (shown by 0 G’s around the 90 second
mark), accelerating at the rate of gravity (9.8 meters per second
per second) to a maximum velocity of 135 km per hour is
enough to churn a weak stomach (an unfortunate experience
for a number of our students).

The Tower of Terror ride as analysed in class this week
accelerated us backwards reaching speeds of 160 km/h before
we experienced yet more time in weightlessness before
plummeting back to Earth, only this time face first. It was the
perfect ride to put our knowledge of conservation of kinetic and
gravitational potential energies to the test along with linear and
vertical accelerations.
While riding the bumps, corkscrews and loops of the
SideWinder roller coaster our data showed that students felt
accelerations nearly four times as high as the accelerations felt
when standing on solid ground at the fast corners and loops.
We are in the process of comparing Dreamworld’s statements
of a maximum velocity of 85 km/h and accelerations reaching 3
G’s in our assignment which is nearly as mentally taxing as the
ride was physically.
We had a great time spreading some physics knowledge at
Dreamworld and the Thursday show day allowed for some
well-deserved rest and recovery. It is a great way to see physics
in action and a reminder that Physics is Phun!

WEEK 8 and 9
VISUALISING
Visualising is where a reader or text user creates a picture
in their mind. It requires readers to clarify, describe, reorder
information and make connections to create an image of a
word, phrase, chunk or whole text. Some students find actually
creating a drawing or mind map more useful in allowing for an
accurate visualisation. Creating this image will more frequently
prompt students to recall or remember specific details or
information after they have finished reading the text.

Kiele Morley, a Year 10 student has been appointed as the
school’s STEM Ambassador. She was recently presented her
STEM badge and here’s an extract of Jen Borowski’s (NCR
STEM Champion) speech for Kiele’s STEM badge presentation.

2016 AQUINAS COLLEGE 8hr PEDAL PRIX
“STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics. By 2020, 75% of the jobs will need one or more
of these subjects. So if you want a good job please study hard
in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Early
this year we ran the Girls STEM Power Camp in Brisbane. Of
the 105 girls in our region, we only choose 3 girls and one was
Kiele Morley and today I would like to present her the STEM
Ambassador badge. She was a very worthy recipient from your
school and will now go on to be part of the Girls Narrative
Project in which she will interview 2 ex-students of this school
whose stories will be complied on the website so that everyone
in Queensland can see that Bundaberg SHS is a great school.”
On 19 and 20 of May, two of our Bundy High Hornets racing
teams represented our school in the annual Aquinas College
HPV 8-hour race which took place at the Xtreme Karting
Raceway near the Gold Coast. Our students have been training
since February in preparation for this endurance event. It was
the first time that our senior girls team has competed at this
location and it was only the second run for our boys team. The
field of competitors was small (29 entries), but they were fierce
in competition which consisted of all the winning teams from
the Maryborough 24hr Challenge and private school teams. The
following students entered in the Open Boys and Open Girls
categories.

BBQ was a great success raising over $1000! Thank you to all
who volunteered on the day and to all who bought our delicious
sausages and onions.
Senior Girls Team: Hannah Blee, Sam Bainbridge, Maddy
Morrall, Aylish Dunn, Emma Bruce, Kitra Westron, Shannon
Searle and Marissa Orpin.
Our teams and bikes lasted the full 8 hours of racing and
handled the conditions and challengers extremely well. With
well-rehearsed pits stops and strong rider discipline our teams
were rewarded with outstanding results. Our Girls team won
their category, beating last year’s overall winning team by 1 lap,
and finished 14th overall. Our Open boys’ team finished with a
better result than last year’s run by finishing 7th in their category
and 10th overall.
Our teams are now preparing for a brand new challenge to
compete at Willowbank Raceway in July which will quickly be
followed by the Benaraby Raceway in August.
I would like to acknowledge the great efforts of Mr Dunn,
Mrs Sinclair-Dunn and Mrs Rory Smith as the team coaches/
managers. Thanks also to Mr Prince for supplying the stickers
for the bikes, Mr John Farmer for all of the aerodynamic
improvements and racing repairs that he has made on our
bikes, and to all of our sponsors Bundaberg Supercycles,
Repco, Jay Car, Bundaberg Quick Signs, and Jabariu for
their ongoing support for our teams.
Our team members will be supporting Bundaberg
Supercycles at their New Indoor skate park on Victoria Street
East Bundaberg.

Japan Trip Fundraiser
Bundaberg SHS recently held a fundraising BBQ at Bunnings
to assist our students on their upcoming trip to Japan. The

Chess Competition
Twenty Bundaberg State High School students competed in
the Term Two Gardiner Chess Competition on May 24 held at
Walkervale State School.
The team consisting of Alex Buckholz (Year 9), Joshua Howard
(Year 8), Logan Tinney (Year 8) and Reece Buckholz (Year 7)
placed 2nd in the completion and were only 5.5 points behind
Shalom.
Congratulations to Alex Buckholz in Year 9 who was individually
placed 3rd in the competition overall and to Joshua Howard in
Year 8 who was placed 4th.

Ribbons of Merit were awarded to Alex Buckholz, Reece
Buckholz, Joshua Howard, Brenton McHale and Isaac Cooper
for winning more than half of the games they played on the day.

competition will be held on August 9 in Term 3.

Winton Longreach Music Tour
Bundaberg State High School Instrumental Music students
along with students from the Norville State School Choir are off
to Winton and Longreach on July 9, the first week of Term 3.
The Instrumental Music students have been fundraising madly
with events like Cookie Dough drive, Mother’s day raffles and
just recently a Fantastic Fudge Fundraiser just to name a few.
We still have a Trivia night to go on the last Friday of the term
- June 24. if anyone would like to come along and see if they
can out-do the Instrumental Music Department of Bundaberg
SHS please contact Nigel at Bundaberg State High School

newsletter.
Besides all this fundraising the following business have donated
towards our Tour and we would like to recognise them for
the wonderful donations they have made. Thank you to The
Baldwin Group, Friendlies Society Hospital, Phat Tony’s and
Tender Sprouted Meats. Over the next couple of Newsletters
we will be naming more of our wonderful sponsors with some
great photos.

Bundaberg SHS came first and second in the Year 8 Division
with a 40 point margin separating our two leading teams from
third place. In the Junior Secondary Division, Year 9 and 10, our
best team came in second. One of our teams won the Senior
Secondary Division, Year 11 and 12, with our next best placed
team coming in fourth, with a mere 9 points separating the top
4 teams. This is a difference of potentially only one question.
Members of our winning Year 8 team include: Jorja Norgrove,
Lachlan Smith, Zahra Smith, Kyra Verdel and Ben Royan.
Members of our winning Senior team (all Year 11) include:
Matthew Bailey, Jaden Bond, Nick Chatfield, Connor Druett
and Nick Jackson.
The great performances of all of our teams makes our future
in Mathematics look very bright, with potentially many more
victories in the future.
A big thank you must also go to our senior students who
graciously gave up their time to assist with supervision at the
competition.

Math Team Challenge 2016
On Tuesday May 31, 100 students from all year levels
participated in the annual Math Teams Challenge. This event
requires students to work in small teams in two types of events.
The first event asks the students to solve a variety of challenging
problems. The second event is a relay event where students
work in pairs to solve simpler problems, they rotate through
different pairs until all questions are answered. The event
promotes teamwork and problem solving skills and is a great
way for students to challenge themselves in a different
environment. Bundaberg SHS performed well on the day with
some excellent results and fantastic efforts. A total of 90 teams
Science and Engineering Challenge
On May 5, the Science & Engineering
Challenge was held at CQ University. This is
a one day event designed to show year 9
and 10 students that Science Technology
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) isn’t
just for nerds. Each school can have a team
between 24 and 32 students to compete
against 7 other teams from regional schools.
The engineering challenges involve the involuntary application
of principles of science and engineering.

Bundaberg State High School has been involved in this
competition for the last 10 years and has been a runner up
on several occasions, with a combined team from Industrial
Technology and Design from year 9 and 10 saw us winners of
this prestigious event.
Winter Sport

Thank you to Mr Greg Smith who selected a great team of
students on my behalf to represent our school while I was on
long service leave. I did not miss out on seeing our students win
as I became a volunteer for the day.
This year Winter Sport will not commence until Term 3 however
preparations will be starting in the coming weeks. Sign-on/
trials for Winter Sport took place on Friday June 3. Students
will receive a letter upon gaining selection with an attached
permission form that will need to be returned to their coach
prior to fixtures starting. Winter Sport will run on a Wednesday
afternoon and conclude with an all-day finals day, for qualifying
teams, on Friday September 2.
Sports on offer are: Rugby League (girls and boys), Basketball
(girls and boys), Soccer (girls and boys), Hockey (mixed), Lawn
Bowls (girls and boys), Netball (girls), AFL (mixed), Table Tennis
(girls and boys) and Ten Pin Bowling (girls and boys).

No Limits Canoe Camp
A group of year 12 boys who had completed the No Limits
course with chappy Craig over the last couple of years went
on an experiential canoeing camp as part of them graduating
from the course ready for the next stage of their lives after high
school finishes. This was a great experience which developed
character and created many memories. A big “thank you” to
Mr Von Deest for volunteering his own time to come along on
camp.

Cane2Coral Fun Run
I NEED YOUR HELP
I am looking for people to join me in the Cane2Coral Fun Run
on Sunday 7 August so we can raise money for Brain Cancer
Research.
New rules mean the biggest community team wins money for
their charity and I’m aiming to get 100 people to sign up to
Team Eddie (password teameddie). If you have ever thought
about entering in the Cane2Coral Fun Run make this the year
that you do it. You don’t have to be a supreme athlete (like
myself), you just have to cross the finish line. Distances range
from 4kms to ridiculous distances. You can walk, run or jog.
Children, prams, wheelchair athletes most welcome.

Junior Secondary Incentive Days
As an incentive for students to be responsible for all aspects
of their schooling, we conduct end-of-term excursions as a
reward for students consistently doing the right thing
throughout the term. This term the junior secondary incentive
day will be held on Thursday 23 June, at Australia Zoo for Year
7 & 8 and Aussie World for Year 9. Students who meet the
following criteria are nominated by their teachers:
• Consistent application to class work
• Appropriate behaviour
• Good class participation
• Homework always completed on time
• Assessment completed and submitted by due dates
• Positive and respectful attitude to teachers and peer
• Term 2 attendance of 95% or above
Chappy Week
Recently we celebrated Chappy Week at Bundy high and as
part of the week’s activities, staff and students got involved
in the inaugural ‘tape the chappy to the wall’ where chappy
Craig was taped to the admin wall. This was a lot of fun for all
involved.
Invitations for the Term 2 incentive day will be handed out
in Week 9, this invitation will detail the cost of the incentive
day as well the key information for parents and students for
the day. Also detailed on the invitation is that students must
have outstanding fees paid or have entered into a payment
arrangement with the school for the student to attend. If you
have any concerns about this please do not hesitate to contact
the school.

The School Dental Van is currently at Bundaberg High School,
located outside the Junior Hub. We are still currently examining
Years 7 to 10 and will be at the school for some time due to the
large consent rate. Any emergencies or toothaches please call

picnic tables to Bundaberg South State School for its recent
125th celebration. These picnic tables were manufactured by
our building construction class as part of its class project. It
was decided by the students to present them to their primary
school. The tables were kept a secret until delivery and was a
big surprise to the principal, staff and students.
‘On this happy occasion we wish to convey greetings to all
staff, past and present students. Please except this gift of two
picnic tables for your 125 years in education from Bundaberg
State High School community and our best wishes for a very
successful celebration.’
Why? Because we’re in the business of helping people and
creating a bit more love and hope in this world.
How? We’ll cover all the costs (such as flights and
accommodation) and plan the reunion with you. You just need
to convince us you’re sincere and this reunion will be
life-changing.
