Print News or Feature Story Over 50,000 Circulation & Wire

Houston Press, “Going Under:
What Can Happen If Your
Anesthesiologist Leaves the
Room During an Operation”
Comments: A deep dive on one
of the less-covered aspects
of healthcare and creative
approaches to finding savings in
the system. In this case, the story
raises the distinct possibility the
savings have gone too far, putting
patients’ lives at risk.
Second Place: Maria Recio, Fort
Worth Star-Telegram, “For Cruz,
Ideology Trumps Texas Interests”
Third Place: Michael Barajas,
Houston Press, “Use of Force:

Comments: Based on the
headline, the readers expect
to read about wrestling much
sooner. But you do a good job
right from the top of the story of
making the reader care about
Williams. That helped keep me
moving forward through the story.
The photo piqued my interest,
too. Keep taking chances with
your writing, experimenting with
things like the bus pass analogy.
This gives your writing a voice.
