Construction of the base began in March 1942 and by August of that year training of bomber crews began. Although most of the training was focused on the B-24 Liberator, a variety of aircraft types including the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-29 Superfortress also saw service at the base. In all, approximately 8,000 aircrew were trained at PAAB. At the end of the war the base was closed and the facilities given to the City of Pueblo. After The Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum(PWAM) is a nonprofit museum owned by the City of Pueblo and managed by the Pueblo Historical Aircraft Society. The museum was started in the early 1970’s by the then Pueblo City Manager Fred Weisbrod. A group of interested parties approached the Pueblo city government with an offer to care for and restore the aircraft. This group later became the Pueblo Historical Aircraft Society (PHAS) and is charged with managing the museum. http://www.pwam.org E-mail: [email protected] Before To preserve the museum’s aircraft, it became apparent indoor storage was required. In 2001 the first 30.000 Sq. Ft. hanger was erected and in 2010 a second hanger was completed The museum boasts an extensive display of military artifacts, a developing space display, a dedicated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) lab, as well as a library with a wide range of aircraft related books, manuals and DVDs. The library also maintains archives of recorded audio and video interviews of military veterans. Aircraft and vehicle restoration is a major part of the PHAS mission. 31001 Magnuson Ave. Pueblo, CO 81001 719-948-9219
