COMMODORE’S REPORT
Its almost a third of the way into 2013 and a lot has
been happening at SYC. We had a fabulous New Year’s
Eve celebration with several hundred guests enjoying
the music and fireworks, was a great way to start the
year.
a personal level as well as growing within a team
environment, giving them the ability to make group
decisions, think on their feet and work together to
get what they want. Together they gain skills that
they will carry with them for the rest of their lives
The Australia Day celebration was also a great success
with $1263.00 raised for the Salvation Army.
Power Boaties also have a full program for the year
with 8 Predicted Log events and a large number of
cruises organised for the year.
The sailing calendar is full with the Fastway F18 NACRA
Infusion World Championships held at Hollywell from
Feb 2nd to 7th. A great week of racing with 21 boats
from Australia, New Zealand and Oman competing.
This event was followed immediately by the Great
Race which is one of the longest Off the Beach
Catamaran and Dinghy races in Australia. Full results
can be found on page 27.
This race starts from our sailing venue at Hollywell on
the Gold Coast and finishes at RQYS in Brisbane sailing
37 nautical miles through the Broadwater channels
and crossing Moreton Bay to the finish. The first race
was held in 2005 and the event is building in numbers
annually.
We then follow up with the Sail Paradise Offshore
Regatta on 15th to 17th March. This event will
incorporate the Queensland IRC State Championships
and the Go To Blazers Regatta.
I am also very happy to announce that Southport Yacht
Club has been selected to conduct the Australian
National Etchell Championships in November.
We are rapidly becoming a world recognised venue
for sailing events, as well as a full calendar of club
sailing events, Kelvin is a very busy man.
We are also revamping the Southport Mentor program
which was developed 4 years ago and is specifically
for 14 to 18 year olds that want to learn to sail but for
various reasons do not have the opportunity to do so.
This is a unique program that strengthens their
confidence, responsibility and independence on
4 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club
The Cruise guys volunteered their time and boats
to act as stage boats for the Great Race which was
greatly appreciated by the race organisers.
Unfortunately we have had a couple of cruises
cancelled by the weather, which brings me to the
atrocious weather of the 26th/27th of January. The
winds and high seas caused a lot of damage to the
facility at Hollywell with the pontoon and walkway all
but destroyed and most of the sand washed from the
beach in front of the clubhouse.
An enormous effort was required by volunteers and
staff to repair as much of the damage as possible
to allow us to run the FastWay F18 Nacra Infusion
World Championships the next weekend. Particular
thanks to Bob Little and Simon Restall who organised
machinery and gave their time to restore the beach
front to almost its former glory.
I would also like to welcome Brett James to Southport
Yacht Club. Brett has joined us as a Consultant to
manage operations at Main Beach and commenced
duties February 11th. Brett comes to us with a wealth
of experience in club operations and is anxious to
meet as many members as possible.
The Board has also formed a committee to examine the
Club Constitution with a view of making a submission
to the next AGM with any recommended changes.

Charman’s REPORT
With almost another year down as Chairman of
Southport Yacht Club’s Board I take pleasure in
reflecting on the year gone by. We have seen many
changes around the Club with new staff members such
as Marina Manager Mark Riddell settling in so well he’s
become a Member favourite, and the recent contract
taken up by Operations Manager Brett James. I’m sure
that many of you may have met Brett already and
those of you that haven’t, then please make sure to
stop by the Club and introduce yourself. Brett has a
wealth of experience in a Members Club environment
along with knowledge of Micropower, which is the POS
and back office software we utalise.
Micropower has been another implementation this
year for Southport Yacht Club, this sees the Club using
a fully integrated system both front and back of house
which has consolidated the reporting structure for
the accounting staff and is a powerful membership
tool. In the coming months you will see some exciting
new introductions with members card swipe in the
Food & Beverage areas giving you greater access to
discounts, points and loyalty options.
Looking back over the sailing calendar, we have held
successful regattas and races both at Hollywell and
Main Beach, recently seeing the Nacra F18 hosted by
Hollywell and the Etchells here at Main Beach.
These have been a great asset to the Club in patronage,
financially and marketing, via word of mouth from
the many satisfied sailors we saw through the venues.
Looking at Hollywell we have seen marked
improvements in the facility over this year, with much
appreciation and many thanks that must go to those
Members who have had so much to do with getting this
venue looking 1st class! There are too many of you to
thank individually however your help, dedication and
love of your Club does not go unnoticed.
Main Beach has also seen a facelift, with our new
furnishings throughout the Club giving us a bright
and uplifting look. Thanks must go to our Ladies
Associates for their generous funding and welcome
help in selecting many of these improvements.
I feel this has been a year of improvements, a year of
changes and looking forward to a year ahead with so
much more to come! If you haven’t been into either
of the Clubhouse’s recently I can recommend that you
do, I think you will be nicely surprised at the changes
we have implemented.

TREAT YOUR VESSEL TO THE “WORKS”
As the name suggest, you get The Works; there’s
nothing that your vessel may require that can’t
be carried out at The Boat Works, located in
the heart of the Gold Coast Marine precinct.
The full complement of industry leading trades and
services including anti-fouling, shipwrights, painting,
sandblasting, airconditioning, refrigeration, stainless
fabrication, electrical and engineering are all offered
within the complex.
The services offered by The Boat Works include boat
lifting where a 70 tonne Ship Lift is capable of lifting
monohull vessels up to 85 feet in length.
Supplies Shop
Complimenting both the boat yard and trade
tenancies, the Boat Works Supply Store was set up
back in late 2011 to supply customers in the boat yard
with everything they need when having their vessel
lifted in our yard for maintenance. We soon evolved
into a leading trade supply shop here in the Gold
Coast Marine Precent.
The 45 tonne Sea Lift is utilised as a modern slipway
and can bring a wider range of vessels such as
Catamarans & Houseboats out onto the hard, into
workshops or into the all weather covered bays.
There is a range of work space options available from
hardstand space up to 26 metres/85 feet, lockable
sheds ranging up to 30 meters, as well as storage for
masts and containers.
There is a dedicated sandblasting bay for abrasive
works as well as enclosed screens for the refit sheds
which can be provided for environmentally sensitive
works such as grinding and the spraying of antifouls
or paints.
Supplying the items you need when slipping your boat
including antifouling bottom paint, marine paints
and protective coatings. We are distributors for:
Sigma Marine Coatings (PPG), Jotun Marine Paints,
International Marine Paints, Altex Marine Paints,
Clean a Boat Detailing Products, Farecla Polishes,
Norton Abrasives, Federal Batteries, NCS Resins and
Composites.
All works can be carried out in a controlled
environment.
We
are
the
ultimate
all
weather facility with over 20 refit sheds.
We look forward to assisting you with the
services your boat requires; keep in mind

mathew belcher - london to rio 2016
Hi All,
Well, it is a New Year and with it a new season has
started. After our success at Sail Sydney just before
Christmas, we finally had a nice and relaxing break –
the first real break since the Olympic Games. It was
great to have some down-time with our families and
do some of the things that we are usually not allowed
to do, like skiing.
But now we are back on the boat and focused on the
next season. We have already completed a few training
camps in Sydney and on the Gold Coast. Things have
been progressing quite nicely. Angus Galloway and
Tim Hannah as well as the Crawford brothers have
been joining us for most of our training. They have
been keeping us on our toes and it is great to see
these younger teams improving quickly.
Gold Coast in particular whipped up some spectacular
conditions, providing us with unique opportunities to
push the limits and sail in extreme wind and waves.
We have to admit, though, that we were a little scared
at times. Some of those waves just seemed too big to
sail down on… Plenty of photo opportunities for coach
Victor!
With the training camps
behind us we are now ready
for the Australian nationals,
held from 14th - 17th January
in Port Stephens, NSW. The
waters here are a little flatter
than the big swells offshore on
the Gold Coast. Fourteen 470
teams will be competing, and
the flat waters and shifty
conditions here will certainly make for close and
interesting racing.
But it has not all been about sailing. I (Mat) am back
at university, studying for my Master of Urban and
Sustainable development. It has been a busy time
juggling time between the boat and the classroom.
To fill the rest of my spare time I have been down
racing Optis against some of Australia’s best youth
sailors at Southport Yacht Club and launching the new
season at my former school, The Southport School. To
see all these young kids coming into sailing and being
inspired from the success of the Australian Sailing
Team at the London Olympics is hugely rewarding. It
reminds me of how I started sailing and why I am still
here, striving for more.
Happy Sailing,
Mat & Will
Now going into his 23rd year as a Member at Southport Yacht Club, 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist
Mathew Belcher has been sailing at the Club since the young age of 7.
Mathew is now sailing with Will Ryan under Coach Victor Kovalenko, competing for the 2016 Olympic
Games in Rio. Southport Yacht Club wish Mathew and Will all the best!
SYC is proud to be a Sponsor of Mathew and Will’s Olympic Campaign and will be following Mathew
in his future sailing endeavors and keeping you all up to date with his acheivements.

carols on the broadwater
Southport Yacht Club celebrated their annual Carols
on the Broadwater on Saturday 22nd December.
Members and Guests enjoyed Christmas Carols from a
local 12 piece roving choir.
The kids were entertained by face painting and a visit
from Santa with a sack full of lollies.
Brian Surch from the Salvation Army also joined us for
the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. We would like
to give a special thank you to Members and Guests
who generously donated to this great cause.
The evening was finished with a spectacular vessel
parade, we thank all participants who helped light up
the Broadwater and to congratulate Bob Kershaw who
won Best Dressed Boat.

syc social golf
The Social Golf Club played at thirteen
different golf courses in 2012, including
Autumn and Spring tours to the Sunshine
Coast and Byron Bay. On average, we had
20-22 players for each game.
The May Autumn Golf Tour was accommodated in
Mooloolaba to play the Pelican Waters (Caloundra)
and Palmer Coolum courses. The “unofficial” Spring
tour played the Ocean Shores and Byron Bay courses,
staying at the Lord Byron Resort. Regrettably, the
number of players willing to travel were lower last
year, to a level that barely justified the additional
work of organising the tours. We hope that Tour
interest levels in 2013 will be greater.
The Commodore’s Trophy for 2012 (based on their
best six games for the year) was won for the second
time by Phil Kellond-Knight (326 points) with Eddie
Allen in second place (325 pts), third place Captain
Terry Stephenson (323 pts), fourth place Bill Gasston
(322 pts) and fifth President Tony Bailey (321 pts). It
was a very close competition with the law of averages
favouring those players who played the most games
during the year – it pays to be regular!
The Golf Christmas Dinner in December was the
occasion for the presentation of the Commodore’s
Trophy by Commodore Ian Hall and much other
merriment with about 40 players and consorts
attending. Although many photographs were taken
on that occasion, few are suitable for publication!
We thank Southport Yacht Club for its part-sponsorship
of the dinner and also for the restaurant prize
certificates for each game.
The golf courses for 2013 have mostly been booked
now and for the first half will be:
4th February:
Surfers Paradise
11th March:
Palm Meadows
8th April:
Hope Island
May:Tour (location TBA)
10th June:
Ocean Shores
8th July:

12th August:

9th September:

Players Wanted – Come and Play A Round with Us.
We are always looking for additional players for
our events. Our optimal number of players is 24
per outing (friends and visitors are welcome). Our
emphasis is on social camaraderie rather than cutthroat competition.
Prices to play range from $57 - $75 per outing, which
covers green fee, golf cart, burger-style lunch and
prizes. Playing with SYC Social Golf Club is a very
inexpensive and fun way to enjoy the great courses
that we have on the Gold Coast.
If you would like to be added to our email booking
system to play, please contact Terry Stephenson at
[email protected] or 0419 666 605 for New Member
Information (or ask SYC Reception for details).
Tony Bailey
Past President SYC Social Golf Club
We thank President Tony Bailey, who is stepping down
after six years in the role, for his excellent work
administering the club.
Programme for 2013:
In the absence of any other volunteers, Captain
Terry Stephenson has also taken on the President’s
responsibilities of organising and administering
the Social Golf Club for 2013. Tony Bailey, who is
recovering from a hip replacement operation, will
assist until a full-time President can be found.

With the first half of the 2012/13 season already gone
people are saying how fast the time is going, it won’t
be long and we will be chasing the Goodwill Cup again.
Over the past few months we have had a good number
of new vessels registered with the club and we
welcome you all aboard, I would like to encourage
you to join us in either a cruising in company with the
Cruising Flotilla, or if you like a challenge enquire at
reception about the clubs Predicted Logging events,
or perhaps crew on one of the vessels in the next
event to see if logging is for you.
The SYC and Mayor’s Xmas Carols had several boats
dressed all over with lights, and though numbers were
down those vessels participating put on a wonderful
display for the crowds at the Mayors Broadwater
Park and SYC’s Carols, hope we can encourage more
entrants for next year.
The Dux Broadwater series is sponsored by Jotun and
the Wattyl Chairman’s trophy now behind us with
some interesting results, these results are posted on
the clubs website with many boats in tough competion
trying for this season’s Club Champion.
It was disappointing again for the Australia Day, 3 day
Cruise which had to be cancelled. Checking back to
2012 Australia Day, the weather forecast which was
almost exactly the same as 2013 saw 3 days of rain,
and strong winds, but it was very encouraging to see
over 20 boats registered for this cruise. Hope next
year brings better weather, and surely we can’t have
3 wet Australia Days in a row that only happens in
Tassie…
The Great Race on Feb 9th from Hollywell to Manly,
vessels from the SYC Cruising Flotilla and loggers
filled the check point positions along the route
between Hollywell and Victoria Point; RQYS vessels
filled the check points north from Victoria Point up
to Manly, with around 100 of the beach yachts from
all categories taking part in this annual event, it was
definitely a Great Race and all check point vessels
look forward to next year’s event.
The Commodores Trophy held on the first weekend
in May, this has always been a long weekend event
but now the Monday is no longer a public holiday the
event will have to come back to a two day event with
a Predicted Log course set starting around midday
Saturday and returning to Canipia anchorage for
Saturday night, and a presentation breakfast ashore
on the Sunday, this will allow vessels to depart
around 11.00am to return to their berths before
dark. More details on this at our next log event
presentation. Phil Short

“a man and his boat”
chris oxenford “fairwinds’
Chris Oxenford and his boat “Fairwinds” are Gold
Coast originals. The Oxenford family have been on
the Gold Coast since at least 1869 (that’s about 80
years before the area became the Gold Coast).
Chris is a descendent of W.R.Oxenford who had taken
up 90 hectares of land near Coomera River establishing
a farm. When the railway was put through in 1889
a siding on the Oxenford land was called Oxenford
Siding, as the town grew around the railway it
eventually was officially named Oxenford.
Chris has owned “Faiwinds” since 1986. The boat was
built in a backyard in Scarborough Street, Southport
in the 1960s. Joe Haywood had built a number
of boats behind his house at the northern end of
Scarborough Street. He started building “Fairwinds”
but for an unknown reason he could not complete it
and the project was taken over by Alf Kerven and
Ken McMillan, they finished it and “Fairwinds” was
lowered into the Broadwater by crane near the
original Grand Hotel in (we believe) 1966.
Chris had became involved in Predicted Log Events
at SYC in the seventies helping on other members
boats. When “Fairwinds” was offered for sale by
it’s second owner, Graham “Lofty” Miller Chris took
the plunge and became the proud owner. Chris was
attracted by the classic trawler style and walk around
decks of “Fairwinds.” Chris entered his first “Log”
event in 1986 as a skipper. It took a few years for
Chris to fully understand how to be really competitive
in these events. He says that the advice from the
very experienced yachtsman and “logger”, Malcolm
Wood, put him on the right track to be successful.
and “Fairwinds” has always been one of the clubs
most consistent boats in the annual Goodwill Cup
against RQYS.
Chris is a very dedicated and active SYC member,
he has been a Power Boat Committee member and
Chairman, Rear Commodore and was Club Commodore
in 2000 and is currently a SYC Board member.
“Fairwinds” was originally powered by a 671GM, it was
repowered about 5 years ago with a 6 cylinder Perkins
diesel. Chris has made some others changes over the
years including adding a genset, hot water, holding
tank, modern electronics, while respecting its classic
lines and maintaining it in pristine condition.
“Fairwinds” is a traditional timber, trawler style hard
chine boat of 34 feet, and draft of around 4ft. Chris has
ventured out through the Seaway on fishing days, but
“Fairwinds” is really a classic “baycruiser “ so ideally
suited to the Broadwater, Moreton Bay and it’s many
rivers and inlets. It cruises extremely economically
at 7knots and cuts through the water effortlessly,
causing minimum effect on the environment and
other people enjoying our magnificent waterways,
and it surely will keep doing that for many years to
come.

Chris with his wife, Barbara, and a few different
navigators have competed in “log” or Navigational
Events ever since, collecting along the way two Club
Championships and numerous individual event wins

The Cruising Flotilla’s last event for 2012 was the
Christmas Lunch. This was held on the eastern lawn
of the Yacht Club on Sunday 2nd December. This was
an enjoyable day for all attending, with some bringing
family members and grandchildren to see Santa. The
weather was kind to us that day. Some brought their
own lunch, others used the barbecue facilities, and
others ordered from the Club menu.
Santa arrived with his sackful of presents for all who
had been good during the year, surprisingly no one
seemed to miss out. Our thanks go to Santa (John
Lord) for doing such a great job ably assisted by his
helper (Susan Hall). I think they were glad to shed
their suits as it was such a hot day. The grandchildren
in attendance were all happy to receive their presents
from Santa. Christmas cake was also served to all.
Australia Day was to be our next cruise going to
Dux for a barbecue and Australia Day celebrations.
Unfortunately this cruise was cancelled due to the
wild winds and rain.
This was a repeat of last year’s cruise which was also
cancelled. Keep your fingers crossed that next year
brings us a beautiful weekend.
Due to the cancellation of this cruise it was decided
to have the next cruise as a delayed Australia Day
celebrations therefore we are going to Dux and hold
our celebrations with varied activities for all.
Future cruises are listed on the Club website and also
published in the weekly E-News.
We have a few new cruisers to the flotilla and look
forward to seeing them on future cruises.

New mandatory VHF radio
operators qualification for
recreational boaters announced
Australian recreational boaters will be required
to sit for an Australian Waters Qualification (AWQ)
certificate to operate a VHF marine radio, according to
a review by the Australian Communications and Media
Authority (ACMA). It is anticipated for implementation
during 2013-14.
The AWQ will become the mandatory requirement to
operate a VHF radio said ACMA last week in issuing the
final outcomes paper into its review of recreational
boaters’ usage of VHF broadcasting.

formation of the royal australian navy
Part 1.
How Old is Australia’s Navy…
This might seem a simple question, but over the
years the Australian Navy’s birthday has remained a
source of some confusion. The date now accepted
is 1st March 1901. The previously accepted date of
10th July 1911 is not the birth date of Naval Forces
in Australia; rather it was the date that Sovereign
granted the title “Royal” to Australian Navy.
In 1904 Captain Creswell embarked on a program
designed to breathe new life into the Commonwealth
Naval Forces operations. CNF warships had been
designated His Majesty’s Australian Ship (HMAS) but
this had never received the King’s sanction. During a
visit to London for the Coronation of King George V,
Australian ministers made known their desire to have
the prefix “Royal” attached to the Australian Navy’s
title.
In December of 1907 Alfred Deakin announced
that the CNF would expand to include a flotilla of
submarines and coastal destroyers, and in February
1909 Australia’s Naval representative in London
requested for the first three vessels, the destroyers
Parramatta, Yarra, and Warrego.
At the Imperial Conference the admiralty suggested
that the CNF expand to include a self contained
“Fleet Unit” based on a Battle Cruiser and several
light Cruisers.
On 10th July 1911 King George approved the request,
(with great satisfaction) The decision was promulgated
to the CNF on 5th October 1911. There after the
officially became the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
The CNF inherited a motley collection of obsolescent
coastal and harbor defence vessels when the State
Navies transferred to the Commonwealth control in
1st March 1901. As a result, the Defense of Australia’s
sea lanes remained the responsibility of the Australian
Squadron of the Royal Navy.
Jackie Fisher the First Sea Lord of the British Admiralty
approved an immediate construction of an Australian
Fleet Unit.
The Unit was to comprise of a Battle Class Cruiser, and
three Bristol Class Unarmored Cruisers, six River Class
Destroyers, and three “C” Class Submarines. The cost
to Australia was to be Three million .695 pounds.
Australia’s drive to provide for its own Naval Defense,
culminated on 4th October 1913 when the fleet of
seven ships, led by the battle cruiser HMAS Australia,
light cruisers’ HMAS Sydney, Melbourne, Encounter
and Destroyers Warrego, Parramatta, and Yarra. All
proudly sailed into Sydney Harbour to the wild acclaim
of the public.
This year an International Fleet Review (IFR) in
Sydney Harbour, will mark a very special centenary.
An International Armada of 40 warships will steam
into Sydney Harbour marking 100 years since the first
arrival of Australia’s Naval Fleet. The IFR will be one
of the most spectacular events ever hosted by the
Royal Australian Navy.
Other events will include Tall ships from around the
world who will be visiting as well as and several fly
pasts by Navy, Army, Commercial and Civilian aircraft.
With 10,000 sailors in Sydney a march past from all
visiting warships with Naval bands is scheduled and
many Naval reunion’s and open ships for visitors.

MATTHEW PERCY
VICE COMMODORE SAIL
Hi All,
It has been a very busy summer sailing season at our
Club this year, once again the Club has hoisted a
number of exciting events, including an International
Event, “The F18 Nacra Infusion World Championships”,
State Titles, “The Etchell QLD State Championships
and Special Events like the Offshore “Surf to City” ,
Inshore “The Great Race “, “Cook Island” and “The
Classic Julian Rocks 100” Offshore races, along with
the normal Club events for our members, the sailing
office has been counting and its about 700 sporting
events this year. Sure some fleets are not getting the
numbers we would like but other fleets are going and
producing some fantastic sailors.
As I travel around and meet other Club Officials, read
the media reports the sport is in decline in many
areas of the country, I don’t think there is one soul
reason for this, there are the usual suspects like cost,
time, travel and my favourite there are so many
other things to do these days. Now it’s true we are
feeling it with our Gold Membership and the Club
Membership is ageing, but maybe the sport (national,
state associations and some clubs) has lost a little
focus over time and forgotten the basic sail training,
coaching and a safe controlled introductions to our
sport.
However I think that this is one area where Southport
and Hollywell has bucked the trend, over several
years the Board, Associates, and most Members have
encouraged the younger Members of our Club and as
a result have a very healthy Junior Programme, the
envy of most Clubs I would suggest.
24 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club
This however is not free or cheap, it does cost a lot of
money to resource our sport. Over time the rules on
safety and rescue boats have changed, the equipment
is no longer made with Dad and mates under the
house, and Mum refuses to repair sails (because the
sewing machine is long gone). It’s becoming expensive
to play our game and have fun on the water.
So as the Sailing Commodore I would like to on behalf
of all our sailing crews, from the young Sunday
morning learners, to the very old and salty parents
that have produced some fantastic results once again
and enjoyed what this Club is trying to produce. A
safe, friendly, cheerful, healthy, learning environment
for everybody.
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH.
To everyone the money is well spent on our future.
The youth of the Club!
And Country!
So the next big event is the XXXX Sail Paradise Regatta
on the 15th to 17th March, which this year will also
be the Queensland IRC Championships, so far there
is some interest going within the local fleets and its
shaping up to be a great three days of racing. There
will be over six different classes compete from Trailer
Boat’s, Catamarans to the 66 foot swing keeled Black
Jack.
So thank you to the Volunteers, (our club has the best)
Staff that will have to put up with some merry crew’s,
and Management that will ensure the event goes off
without a hitch.
Matthew Percy
Vice Commodore Sail
29er nationals and australian youth nationals
For the 2012/2013 sailing season, the 29er Australian
Championships were held on the waters of Port Phillip
Bay out of McCrae Sailing Club on the Mornington
Peninsula. With a team of Southport sailors heading
down for the event, the months of training together
during the year ensured a tightly knit team. Our fleet
of 29ers had grown considerably since the year before.
In 2011 we had only one 29er on the water during
the week but we now have 7 boats in the yard and
training as a group every week. It is really exciting to
see the younger sailors stepping up into the 29er class
from Optimists and Sabots.
Contending at the Nationals we had Claire
McInally sailing with Florian Hagen (our German
friend), Kyle O’Connel with Shon Mori and myself
sailing with Tom Siganto. As this Regatta made
part of the selection for the one boat to earn
a place in the Australian Youth Sailing Team to
compete in Cyprus, there was a lot on the table.
Day one brought 30kts of wind and a 1.5m chop which
turned out to be too much for the fleet and after
limping around on the racecourse for a while we were
sent back to the beach to reset for the next day.
Day two was again very windy averaging around 23kts
for the 3 races. Tom and myself had a fantastic day to
begin the regatta with a 1,2,3 to give us the overall
lead.
The rest of the Regatta provided some very tricky
racecourses and some great talent was shown
from other sailors. After 4 days of racing us Aussies
unfortunately let a New Zealand team get the better
of us as they stole the overall win from Harry Price
who was first Australian. Our fellow QAS sailors of
Charlie and Lewis finished 3rd and Tom and myself in
4th overall. Kyle and Shon finished their first Nationals
together in 31st overall and 3rd Junior team. Claire
and Florian also sailed well as a new team to place
22nd overall and 3rd mixed crew.
For those of us who continued on to Hobart for the
Youth Nationals, the competition was still on as the
spot for the Youth Team was still up for grabs as both
of the regattas count to the selection.
On the barge we went over to Tasmania, which provided
us with the hottest day on record (41.9), lots of wind,
no wind and then freezing temperatures. The weather
was always expected to be completely unpredictable
which is dangerous when the competition is so intense.
We had some crazy racing that’s for sure! One of the
race days we started in around 3kts which then built
to 30kts so we were consequently sent ashore where
we then waited 3 ½ hours before returning to the
racecourse and racing in 10-25kts which was shifting
up to 40kts! It was full on!
It was important to keep a cool head and be able to
switch back into race mode when we needed to. Tom
and I sailed quite well throughout the Regatta but
didn’t quite “nail it”. We were left with 3rd overall
behind the same two boats from the Nationals. Kyle
and Shon finished 22nd overall struggling a bit with
their light weight in the strong breezes.
Yes, this meant that Tom and I did not regain our
position in the Australian Youth Sailing Team that
we were in last year. This was very disappointing for
us but on the flip side it was quite a happy moment
because it meant we now move forward. Tom is now
in a crewing position with new skipper Charlie Wyatt
from Brisbane and loving every bit of it. I have now
begun my campaign in the 49er class with Lewis Brake
also from Brisbane. (Charlie and Lewis were the 29er
team that came 2nd in front of us at the Regatta’s).
Tom and I definitely had a fantastic 2 years in the 29er
together and hopefully we will continue to work our
way up in the rankings overtime in our new journeys.
Finally, I need to give a huge thank you to Southport
Yacht Club, which continues to support all the sailing
out of Hollywell. A big thanks goes to all our parents
who travelled with us all the way to Hobart and back
and a special recognition needs to go to Shane Smith
who has spent a massive amount of time helping us
prepare for these Regatta’s. All of the great sailors
coming out of our club are due to Shane’s coaching
and time towards the sport.

sailing - F18 NACRA INFUSION WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013
ADAM BEATIE AND JAMIE LEITNER WINNERS OF THE
2013 NACRA INFUSION WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!
Australian entrant Adam Beatie with Jamie Leitner
winners of the 2013 F18 Nacra Infusion World
Championships with a score of 20.8, they managed to
take the lead from local Brisbane sailor Mick Guinea,
whom came from a strong lead to place 2nd and loose
the regatta by only .2.
Competitors joined together on the Gold Coast for the
World Championships from all around World including
Australia, Oman, Thailand, The Netherlands, Brazil,
Canada, New Zealand, and Germany.
On Sunday 3rd February, the Gold Coast saw the
beginning of the 2013 F18 Nacra Infusion World
Championships, hosted from Southport Yacht Club’s
Hollywell Sailing Squadron. With heavy winds and
testing conditions all three race’s were held on
the Sunday from but unfortunately due to strong
winds Monday was abandoned. However even with
strong winds, Tuesday’s racing was underway, due
to two broken masts only one race was conducted.
Wednesday and Thursday races were well underway
with four races each day from the scheduled three
races each day.
“Sailing on Thursday was fantastic, although with
the challenges of light wind, up and down pressure
conditions, Thursday’s racing was more like
Champagne Sailing, with the perfect Queensland
sailing weather, this last race really decided who was
to be the World Champion for 2013”, said Principle
Race Officer, Ross Wilson.
26 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club
Ross Wilson also said “he was surprised by the
tremendous sailing conducted by Musab Al-Hadi and
crew member Ahmed Al-Balushi from Oman. They
were one of the more very competitive entrants in the
lighter breezes, sailing better in the light wind than
most. Finishing fourth was an absolute credit to them
as they have not sailed under these sea conditions
with strong swells and big waves off the Queensland
Coast”.
Another surprise was Miranda Powrie from New
Zealand finishing 10th in her first Nacra Infusion
World Championships. After years of sailing in a
Lazer Radial, Miranda is now focusing on her Olympic
Campaign to sail in a Nacra 17.
Ross Wilson would like to thank Southport Yacht
Club’s Sailing Administrator, Kelvin Holdt and
race management team for their fantastic efforts
throughout the regatta. Everyone from the Race
Management, Race Officers and Entrants had a great
World Championships and look forward to be back at
Southport Yacht Club for another regatta.
A big thank you also to Fastway Couriers for their
Sponsorship of the regatta.
sailing - the great race
Article by Colin Metcher
The ninth running of the great race was held in perfect
weather with calm patches and a beautiful spinnaker
run across Moreton Bay. This led to 100% finishing rate
for all competitors. Numbers were down this year due
to several factors, the most influential being clashing
with other events. For instance we would normally
expect 4 or 5 29ers from our Club alone, but they
were competing interstate.
For this reason a change of date is likely from the
traditional February to later (possible March).
Inclusion of a half marathon reinstalled a division
which was run in the first great race (but discontinued)
was successful and will be built for next year.
Several other innervations in the pipe line together
with more convenient date will see the event regain
entry numbers.
The actual conducting of the event was excellent and
the huge effort by volunteers is a major factor in the
success of this iconic event.
It is the longest passage race for dinghies in Australia
(any maybe for Multihulls) and due to the challenges
of narrow tidal waterways opening up into the wide
expanses of Moreton Bay, combined with the stamina
required of the crews makes it a truly testing race
event.
An outstanding achievement was by Jaime Metcher
who was the first sailor to complete The Great Race
on a sail board. In a time of 5 hours and 45 minutes.
While sailed in several classes with separate results
the big award is the Perpetual Shield for the Overall
Winners of the Monohull and Multihull Classes, the
other big challenge is the race records, however
these were not broken this year.
1st Overall Monohull: ‘Cool Change’ A Sportskiff, Colin
Metcher and Brett Ryman.
1st Overall Multihull: ‘Magic Marine’ Nacra Infusion,
Adam Beattie and Jamie Leitner.

gold coast sailability @ southport yacht Club
On Tuesday the 22nd of
January our first day of sailing
for 2013 it was very pleasing
to welcome (at the invitation
of Marion Ham) Dr David
Straton, Dr Graham Sivyer,
Cathy Post and Len Mossop as our guests. They along
with Life Members Wynn Treasure and Marion Ham had
been instrumental in establishing sailing for people
with diminished capabilities at Southport Yacht Club
Hollywell sixteen years ago.
hear from sailors or potential sailors with disabilities
who would like to join us on one of our yachts and
compete in the weekly Twilight Races.
We welcome enquires from anyone with a disability
who would like to experience the pleasure and
benefits of time on the water any Tuesday.
Bryce Wilson
Sailability Gold Coast President.
It was extremely gratifying to hear our visitors
expressing their complements and pleasure in seeing
how a very small group in 1997 with one sailing dinghy
and six sailors had grown to the organisation that
it is today. With the cooperation and assistance of
Southport Yacht Club over the years, we now see up
to a hundred sailors enjoying freedom on the water in
our fleet of fourteen sailing dinghies and four yachts
on any given Tuesday. Sailability now operates in over
twenty countries and we believe that Sailability Gold
Coast with our inventory of vessels and equipment

jack sherring - Sail sydney & aus moth championships
Jack Sherring at Sail Sydney 2012 and the
2013 Australian Moth Championships at
Wangi Wangi, Lake Macquarie, NSW.
Jack has now increased his best average speed to
29.1kts, not far off the record of 32.9kts set by Tom
Slingsby in December. Jack’s family and the Southport
Yacht Club are very proud of his acheivements over
the past year.
Jack has really stepped up another level since
competing at the Worlds in Lake Garda. His boat
is tuned to perfection with the help of his Dad,
Brian who has put many hours into it. He had a great
regatta at Sail Sydney, finishing in 7th place overall
ahead of 2 Olympic Gold Medalists, Tom Slingsby and
Iian Jensen. The National regatta at Wangi Wangi was held from
6th to 12th January. The conditions were very hot
and most days the breeze was around the 15 to 20kt
mark. He was competing in a fleet of 67 boats with
3 Olympic Gold Medalists, a Silver medalist, World
Champions, Australian Champions, America’s Cup
Sailors and several professional sailors. Although he
didn’t win a race he managed to cross the line at
some point during the 15 race series in front of every
other competitor. His best race result was a 7th and
his worst was 22nd (not including drops). Pretty good
considering the calibre of sailors he was up against. He finished just one place behind Gold Medalist,
Nathan Outteridge with only 2 points between them.
Nathan Outteridge stated at the end of the regatta
that it was without a doubt the highest level of racing
he has seen in the class. One article written about the
nationals noted that “apart from the Americas Cup
you probably won’t see a better start list of skippers
in any event. These are superstars of not just this
class but all high performance sailing”.
Jack finshed a very impressive 13th overall and was
crowned the Junior Australian Moth Champion for the
third time running, a feat that has not been acheived
since 1963. Although he is classed as a junior in the
Moth Class, he has turned his efforts towards the
open fleet and has surpassed all of our expectations.
Jack’s most valued reward was being personally
congratulated on his efforts by Tom Slingsby, Nathan
Outteridge, Scott Babbage and the designer of the
Mach 2 Moth, Andrew Macdougall.
On the calendar for 2013 will be the NSW State Titles
to be held over the Easter Weekend and hopefully
following up with the 2013 Moth Worlds to be held
in Hawaii in October. Jack greatly appreciates the
support he receives from the Southport Yacht Club
and it’s Members.
We wish Jack all the best in 2013!

surf to city yacht race
Dad’s Play!
Its one of those moments in life, that imprints on your
memory, when, after years of being left on the shore
with anticipating eyes, as your dad sails away to fly
a hull, you are finally allowed to crew on dad’s toy!
So was the case, for Ned Overell, one of SYC Sailing
Squadron’s high performance squad members, who
recently participated in the 2013 Surf to City Race,
on Lightwave Raider One Design. Joining other crew
members, Roger Overell (dad), Jaibon Crisp, John
Dickson, & Llyod Crisp, Ned’s introduction to bigger
boat racing was enjoyable, with light conditions
making way for a long race.
Dad’s toy: Lightwave Raider One Design
There was friendly rivalry as competing crews from
Lightwave & AYS Raider One Design catamarans
participated in the race, and Ned was keen to point
out that they won against AYS Raider, who retired
(when in the lead J) owing to the light conditions and
evening social commitments (oh yeh, very serious
racers!!).
Race rules require children under 16 to have a
statement of experience to permit participation. Head
coach, Shane Smith, of Sailing Racing Solutions, was
confident in Ned’s sailing experience for participation
in the Surf to City Race. Roger Overell comments
“Sailing is an incredibly enjoyable sport for kids and
great life skill. It is a joy when your family share
your passion. Participating in the excellent youth
sailing programme at SYC Sailing Squadron offers
many opportunities to young sailors. I was proud to
have Ned crew for us and the other crew members
were delighted with his assistance. Unfortunately,
his experience won’t stack up for our next race, the
Brisbane to Gladstone, but he’s aspiring to join us in
a few years ”.
Ned Overell, one of SYC Sailing Squadron’s high performance
squad members prepares for the start of the 2013 Surf to City
race, with Lightwave & AYS Raider One Design crews.
This years race saw 9 Southport Yacht Club yachts
sailing on the inshore course and 4 yachts on the
offshore course.
The day began with some very light breeze out of
the east and with a northerly forecast it was looking
like a long upwind slog to finish in Shorncliffe for the
competitors.

Karen Bretagne
President
Hot summer, cyclonic storms, king tides and some
very sad stories faced Australians this year. We have
heard and watched many tragedies but most of all
shared the inner fight we Aussies display in these
testing times.
Within our own ranks a couple of farewells. Past
President Margaret Paterson lost her husband Graham
after a long illness. Carmel Nicholas (past treasurer
and hopeful to return) had a hugely unexpected
loss of her husband David and Leonie Bell (current
committee member) fell and incurred multiple breaks
not only in one wrist but both.
Hard knocks, but watch this space as the “fight”
comes out in these strong women who will overcome
and return stronger.
Our first event for 2013 was the brain child of Jeni
Bone our youngest member of the committee. Jeni
arranged for David Hill, former Chairman of ABC and
NSW Rail turned author to present and book sign at
a fabulous function at the Club in February. Ray
McMahon from Hot Tomato took the MC reigns and
drew out amazing stories from David on his transition
from head honcho to the dedicated research required
to complete his series of books. David’s books sold out
in minutes, all with a personal message from David,
however, if you missed out, new stock is coming into
Luv That Book at Helensvale.
Congratulations to my committee, hostesses of the
day. Everything ran so very smoothly. The staff was
super attentive and Chef Simon delivered the most
exquisite food for our lunch. Jeni Bone gained new
sponsors including Songbirds in Mt Tamborine, Audi
Centre Gold Coast for providing their brand Q3 and
Q7 on display as well as a prize – on loan of course!
QT Surfers Paradise, Australian Gourmet Hampers,
Wild Oats and our ever faithful Zeppelin Travel also
provided to ensure our guests had fabulous prizes.
So onto our next project which is our famed North
Straddie Getaway revisited after 3 years.
An
absolutely full day from brekkie to sunset cocktails
but it is very limited to the capacity of the coach so
don’t wait! Bookings are open now.
Until next time.
