Commodore
COMMODORE’S REPORT
With this being my final column as the Commodore of
Southport Yacht Club I could be expected by many to be
saying ‘farewell’, but I won’t be doing that per se, as I am
not actually going anywhere: I will still be very much part
of the Club. I’m just stepping down as Commodore after my
scheduled two years of service.
When I first joined SYC I held no aspirations to be either a
member of the Board or the Commodore, so, to be invited
into both positions over the past four years has been a great
honour. I will certainly be taking away new friendships and
experiences which would have not otherwise come my way.
I am moving on, firm in the belief that this wonderful Club
holds a wealth of untapped potential – potential that can take
it to being one of the most significant organisations of its type
in this country, while still retaining its highly valued heritage
and traditions.
The future is all about Southport Yacht Club’s greatest asset –
its membership, young and old(er). That is where our on-going
success is to be found. Having a healthy ‘bottom line’ in the
accounts is one thing, but seeing a far healthier bottom line
come about as a consequence of having a membership that is
even more supportive of the Club and its activities should be
the ultimate goal.
How can this be achieved? By moving with the times and
seeking tomorrow’s untapped opportunities while, at the
same time, respecting the past; and – through the application
of pride and professionalism – infusing the membership with
every reason to be an active part of our great Club.
On a personal note I would like to express my gratitude to the
Board who voluntarily give up their time to ensure that the
Club stays on a positive course. I must also recognise our Past
Commodore and CEO, Neale Hollier, for doing a stirling job
in bringing new stability to the Club; and our House Manager
Dale Chapman, who has held his course through some torrid
times and achieved the results; plus our wonderful Associates
Committee, committee members, Club volunteers and staff
– all essential and highly valued members of the Southport
Yacht Club crew. Thank you all.
As I step down I salute the Club and the incoming Commodore,
and thank you, the membership, for your support.
In closing I can only say I’m sad to leave but happy to go.
I am proud to have been your Commodore.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
As I reflect on the successes at the Club over the past few
months and I realise it is with great sense of pride that I submit
this article. The Club has continued to move from strength to
strength; with our Member’s support we have been able to
overcome the many challenges of the past financial year. As
a result of your continued and consistant patronage we will
head into the new financial year in a strong financial position.
On this note, Southport Yacht Club’s Board, Management
and Staff would like to take this opportunity to welcome our
newest Treasurer, Mr. Garry Edwards who stepped into the
position after long standing Treasurers, Peter Lahey & Roger
Mars recently resigned after long and diligent service. Garry
has already introduced a more streamlined reporting system
to the Board, along with his additional support and expertise
in many other areas of the Club.
As we look forward to the Annual General Meeting in July, I’m
extremely pleased to say that we are heading to this meeting
with strong working capital and an excellent cash position. This
has resulted from an enormous effort by Management & Staff to
achieve such outstanding results, almost against all the odds.
Hollywell is about to start work to the
amenities block. As with all building
projects, a few surprises have already
cropped up along the way. These will
stretch the budget to its limit, however
with dedicated volunteers providing
assistance, we are sure to bring the
project back on track.
In closing I would like to thank the Food
& Beverage Staff for our wonderful
Mothers Day lunch at the Club. What a
fantastic day it was! The Club was full
for breakfast, followed by a booked out Daniel Cadman,
lunch (luckily this time I booked early) Chairman
and then, without a hiccup, they rolled
straight into a busy Sunday Roast Night,
it was all hands on deck. The weather,
the Waterfront deck and the wonderful
Waitstaff all made it a day to remember.
CEO’S REPORT
As many of you already know, I will be stepping back as CEO
once a suitable candidate for the position has been appointed.
This won’t see me leaving Southport Yacht Club, but take on
a more consultative role and act as a mentor to our new CEO,
especially during the hand over period to ensure that whoever
is in the leadership position is completely up to date with all
aspects of the Club.
The Club is in a strong position with all areas performing well
and any challenges we have faced in the past are now long
behind us. I therefore feel that the timing is perfect to take
this next step, even though I have loved every moment of my
time as CEO. I trust that the Members and Guests of Southport
Yacht Club will make our new CEO more than welcome.
April saw the Titanic Dinner, a memorial event that
commemorated this tragic event with a wonderful evening
of memories, music and yes, even some fun was to be had!
An enormous effort was put into this event by Phil Short and
partner Mel, and of course many
others, to make it the success it was,
including the Titanic Raffle which sold
over 800 tickets! Congratulations to
all involved.

Hamilton Island upon renewing your
membership! You will go into the draw

TREASURER APPOINTED
In February, the Board appointed Garry Edwards as Treasurer.
Garry replaces Roger Mars, who has relocated from the Gold
Coast making it impractical to continue in the position. Garry
will stand for election at the AGM in July.
On his appointment Garry said; “It’s an honour to serve as
Treasurer of this iconic Gold Coast Club. The Club is well
managed and financially stable. It has good operating and
reporting systems and well-qualified, dedicated staff. I have
been a member for about 10 years and I look forward to
meeting more Club members in this role.”
From early days working for a boat shop in Wagga Wagga and
crewing a Heavyweight Sharpie at Lake Albert, Garry has
maintained an interest in boating all his life, but says these
days he’s “pretty much an estuary fisherman” along with his
wife Lesley Skipp.
Garry has been an accountant for
over 35 years and has an MBA from
Griffith University. He managed
offices for KPMG in Papua New Guinea
for 11 years and has held senior
positions with listed companies in
Australia over the past 18 years. He
is currently Chief Financial Officer of
China Magnesium Corporation Ltd.

XXXX SAIL PARADISE 2012
Sean Langman put on a show for all with his ORMA 60, ‘Team
Australia’ during the series. He brought this incredibly fast
racing multihull to XXXX Sail Paradise to enjoy the racing and
prepare the yacht and crew for his successful assault on the
multihull race record in the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race,
which was staged at Easter.

GOLD COAST . AUSTRALIA
Forty nine entrants from Brisbane to Sydney and as far north
as Hamilton Island joined at Southport Yacht Club for the
annual XXXX Sail Paradise Regatta, held from March 21st to
25th. While the weather was generally perfect for racing,
one day of competition was cancelled due to a gale warning.
However, as is so often the case these days, the forecast
wasn’t quite right for the Gold Coast. Winds reached 40 knots
at Cape Moreton, some 50nm to the north, but the breeze
struggled to top 18 knots off the Gold Coast’s beaches.
XXXX Sail Paradise was also the focal point for the launch
of Queensland’s ‘Season of Sailing’. Joined by ambassador,
Jessica Watson, Channel Nine’s Today Show ran live weather
crosses from the Club on Tuesday 20th March. The weather
presenter, Stevie Jacobs, was even hauled up the mast of
SYC’s ‘Alacrity’ to present the weather for one cross while
our youth sailors created an impressive on-water backdrop by
circling around in their Optimists and Sabots.
Courses were set offshore for the IRC, PHS and Cruising divisions
while the trailables, Etchells, off-the-beach catamarans and
SB3’s joined in with the excitement on Saturday and Sunday.
On the social side of XXXX Sail Paradise 2012 there were
numerous activities staged to keep everyone amused,
including the Welcome Party for skippers, crews and sponsors.
A special function on the Friday evening saw skipper and
crews invited to SYC’s annex at Hollywell for the Beach Party.
The finale was the Trophy Presentation on Sunday 25th, and
this saw Roland Dane and his crew from Jessandra II presented
with the magnificent XXXX Sail Paradise Perpetual Trophy.
At the end of the event the consensus was that Southport
Yacht Club’s XXXX Sail Paradise has again confirmed itself
to be on the cusp of becoming a major offshore and inshore
series in Queensland in the years to come.
While the competition was close in the IRC class between
Roland Dane’s recently purchased Corby 36 Jessandra II and
Peter Harburg’s Blackjack Too, consistency paid for Jessandra
II. She won five of her seven starts on corrected time and
finished second to Blackjack Too in the two remaining races.
Matt Percy’s Alacrity, which sailed under the SYC burgee, was
third overall.

QANTASLINK BRISBANE TO GLADSTONE

All you seasoned Sailors have probably done this race, or maybe
even the Sydney to Hobart and possibly more than once. I on
the other hand, did'nt start sailing untill I was 49yrs of age,
and when the opportunity came this year I grabbed it with
both hands regardless of the fact that I am 61.
I found myself the oldest crew member on the oldest boat, the
" Wistari " launched in 1965 built of ply over h/wood stringers &
frame and styled on the old light weight sharpie, successfully
completed her 43rd Brisbane - Gladstone ocean passage race.
She first won this race in 1977 and went on to win it 3 more
times in 1976, 77 and 1982
2012 we were in 7th place behind Saltash 11 ( she has won this
race 8 times ) right up to the entrance to Gladstone Harbour,
except we experienced reduced pressure across the paddock
( Gladstone speak for the stretch between Breaksea Spit light
north of Sandy Cape and Bustard Hds ) and subsequently we
arrived at the bottom of Facing Isl just in time for the flood to
peak and the wind to drop out.
What should have been a 1 1/2 hr sprint to the finish line,
turned into a 4 1/2 hr slog in 4 - 8 knts of exhausted southely
with 2 1/2 - 3 knts of ebb tide going the other way. Were going
nowhere so I guess you do all you can do !
For us that meant Main, 3/4 oz Spinaker poled 10 deg of
square and as high up as the barber haul would allow, a Blade
Staysail, and a Blooper made by "Hood" that I reckon was as
old as the boat. OH and a large bottle of Rum !
We resulted 18th on corrected time.
Would I recommend it to anyone else ? Damn right I would !
A moonlit night at sea, and the only thing between you and the
horizon are the shades of blue/black in a constant unrelenting
march to their unknown destination, as ocean swell embraces
you, holds you, and releases you only for the next to do the
same. The glistening pearls of reflected light, fading only to
be replaced by dolphins playing at your feet with first light,
dashing silently across your bow as though their race was
designed to purposely put yours into perspective.

PONTOON DINNER
This year’s Pontoon Dinner was attended by over 80 of
our Pontoon Club members, who all enjoyed our special
guest speaker, SYC Commodore Rob Mundle, speaking
on “Broadwater, Books and Boats”. The evening was
the first time that ladies have enjoyed the event.
Cynthia Edwards attended her first ever pontoon dinner
despite being a Pontoon Club member for sometime.
Rhonda Stokes was delighted to be inducted into the
Pontoon Club and attend her inaugural dinner! Another
notable occurrence on the night was Past Commodore
Phon Blondell celebrating his 50th year as a member
of SYC. A wonderful night was had by all and we would
like to thank SYC staff & management for helping
make this another memorable evening.

The Friday Buoys Too is another generous donation by our very own
“Friday Boys” who lunch at SYC every Friday!
The generosity of these gentlemen contributes greatly to the ability of
SYC to maintain youth sailing at the Club.
The Friday Buoys Too adds to the fleet at Hollywell, joining their last
donation, The Friday Buoys! These Opti’s make a considerable difference
to the kids sailing out of Hollywell.

TRIP PREPARATION
Take some time to plan your trip. Is your boat suitable? Have you checked charts and publications?
Is the boat safe?
• Remember your general safety obligation – as
master/skipper you are responsible for the safety
of the boat and the people on board at all times.
• Regular boat maintenance and motor servicing
are essential.
• Know your boat’s limits, stay within these limits.
• Know how to load and distribute the weight in your
boat for maximum stability. Have the heaviest
items placed centrally in a low position in the boat.
Distribute passengers evenly around the boat.
Boat care and maintenance
As part of the general safety obligation it is the owner/
operator’s responsibility to ensure the boat is in a
seaworthy condition and suitable for the trip.
Motor care
Regular preventative maintenance and servicing by
a qualified mechanic may avoid a breakdown at sea.
Some of the causes for engine failure are minor, so
you should be able to troubleshoot a problem. Learn
how to change the filter and primer bowl, clean and
change spark plugs, check for spark (ensuring no spilt
fuel is in the vicinity), check and replace fuses, and
change the propeller. You should also carry spares on
board whenever you go out.
Fuel system
• Check for fuel fumes before starting engine/s.
• Once a year the fuel tank should be cleaned with
suitable cleaning solvent.
• Inspect the fuel tank for any cracks or corrosion.
• Always replace old fuel with new fuel after periods
of inactivity.
• Inspect fuel lines, manual priming bulb and
connections for cracks and leaks.
• Clean out or replace the fuel filter.
Batteries
• Top up battery cells with distilled water and check
each cell with a hydrometer.
• Ensure proper ventilation.
• If voltage is low, charge the battery at a rate that is
suitable to the battery.
• The battery should never be overcharged.
• Batteries should always be secured in brackets.
• Terminals should be kept clean and greased
regularly. Furthermore, conduct a general check of
the boat before each trip.
Boat care
• Inspect the boat for corrosion, cracks and general
wear and tear.
• Test steering gear for stiffness.
• Self draining holes must be kept clear – check
drain flaps and lubricate if necessary.
• If LPG is fitted, ensure the system is regularly
serviced.
• Ensure bilges are clean and dry.
• Check for water and fuel leaks.
• Inspect anchor, shackles and ropes for any sign of
wear and replace if necessary.
• Inspect safety equipment for any deterioration or
damage (including expiry dates).
Tell someone where you are going
Log your trip with your local volunteer rescue
organisation. You will be asked to advise the vessel
name, registration details, number of persons on
board (POB), your destination, and your estimated
time of return. Other useful information you could
provide includes a description of your vessel and
radio channels you intend to monitor. You should also
advise a family member or friend of your intended
trip with an indication of when to advise authorities if
you are not back. Failure to advise these details has
contributed to a number of deaths in Queensland in
recent years.
Weather – make the safe call
Queensland’s weather systems are changeable and
unpredictable. Good weather is critical for a safe and
comfortable trip. Forecasts should be obtained when
planning a trip, before you leave and updated while
you are out on the water.

provides weather information from the Bureau of
Meteorology at the cost of a local phone call.

TELEMACHUS JEWELLERY LADIES DAY RACE
Each year for the last 21 years, Telemachus Jewellery, owned and
operated by member (of 22 years standing) - Telman Lecatsas has
been the sponsor of the Ladies Day Race.
He makes the most original and classic jewellery, and provides the trophies and
prizes for the winners – also sails his own vessel in the event.
This year he did it again and the Club salutes him for his loyalty to the Sailing
Squadron.
There were 13 boats, and a bunch of very enthusiastic sailors competing in a
7 – 10 knot wind under a delightful autum sun.
And all taking place on the birthday of Past Junior Commodore Jessica Hansen
– who took the prize for Skipper of the Best Dressed Boat.
As you can see from the pictures there were a lot of grateful winners with their
Telemachus creations. The real winner was the Southport Yacht Club Sailing
Division. Looking forward to next year Telman – thanks very much indeed.

TITANIC DINNER
Southport Yacht Club joined together to commemorate one
of the world’s most famous cruise liners, the RMS Titanic.
200 Members, Guests and visitors joined at Southport Yacht
Club for an evening of history, great food and all the joys of
Live Irish Entertainment.
Not only was Southport Yacht Club dressed up to tie into
the theme of the evening, but many Members and Guests
dressed up as if they would have 100 years ago.
A two metre handmade model of the Titanic was raffled,
with over 800 tickets sold; the lucky winner of the beautiful
craftsmanship was Greg Turner, who has this proudly on
display in the Maritime Safety Queensland office here in
Main Beach.

HOUSE MANAGER’S REPORT
Another three months passes in the blink of an eye. It stands to
reason that the faster time flies the busier you are. No sooner had
we farewelled the Clipper Fleet, then we welcomed participants in
the Sail Paradise Series, commemorated the sinking of RMS Titanic
and held our annual Anzac Day dedications. The Club has been a hive
of activity.
We continually strive to squeeze the most from every dollar we spend
in order to provide members with fantastic quality food at the most
affordable prices. With this in mind we recently launched our new
Winter Menu, which is jampacked with wonderful eating experiences,
all designed to excite your taste buds without smashing the bank.
Our 2 & 3 course lunch and dinner options are still available from
Monday to Friday each week. At just $25 per person for a two course
meal, and $30 for 3 courses, we are confident that we are striking
the right balance between cost and quality meal offerings. Judging
by member’s reaction we are getting this right. Be sure to come
down to the Club and enjoy a fantastic meal in wonderful surrounds.
We are also continuing with our Friday Lunch & Dinner Steak Special,
where you can enjoy 2 steaks and a bottle of manager’s choice wine
for just $50.
Much has been said recently of the current uncertain and challenging
econimic environment. But it is clear that with our member’s
continued patronage we are able to leaverage the best possible prices

POWERBOAT UPDATE Articles By Ian Hall
SYC has a very proud tradition of conducting Predicted
Log or Navigation Events. The first SYC event was held
in 1959, and has grown into an annual series of nine
events. Included in the series are two sub series- the
Dux Series and the Broadwater Series. We also compete
against RQYS in the annual Goodwill Cup.
These events are a test of navigation and boat control.
Skippers nominate a speed the boat will operate at over
a measured course. Most events are held over a course
of about 10 nautical miles. The events include legs of
varying distances and many turns. There are secret
checkpoints along the course and the winner is decided
by how early or late each boat is at each checkpoint.
One point per second is added to each boat’s score
at each checkpoint. The boat with lowest number of
points over the whole course is the winner. Boats of
varying sizes and speeds can compete in these events
on a equal basis.

The events have evolved over time, checkpoints used
to be manned and times taken manually. A few years
ago electronic devices were introduced to record the
start and finish time and the arrival time at each secret
checkpoint. Up until a few years ago no electronic
navigation aids were allowed to be used on competing
boats. After experimenting in using GPS in navigation
events, competitors decided to allow the use of GPS in
all events this year .
This year’s series to decide the SYC Champion has been
extremely close. As this publication goes to press there
is only one event left, the SYC Open on June 2. The top
three boats “De Ja Vu” David Caruana, “Snooks Too”
Bob Kahl and “Sirocco” Ron Bailey are separated by just
three points.
The Handicap division is also going down to the last
round with “Babe II” Ken Tregeagle in the lead by three
points.
Only “De Ja Vu” David Caruana has won more than a
single event, outright, this year. David, assisted by his
wife and navigator, Lesley, has won the Treasurer’s
Trophy, Chairman’s Trophy and the Buck Jones Memorial
Trophy.

THE COMMODORES TROPHY
The Commodore’s Trophy was held over the weekend
of May 5th & 6th, in superb conditions. The final
destination at Little Ship Club was reasonably well
attended and honours of the day were taken out
by the Ladies of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.
They did so well in the Goodwill Cup last year and
followed up with a magnificent win in the second
day Open Event. They lost only 7 seconds in 10 check
points, and even using GPS as we do nowadays that
was a remarkable feat.

DUX SERIES RESULTS
Over twenty boats have competed in Navigation events
this year, but we would like to see some new faces. The
Powerboat Committee will provide assistance to get you
started so you can enjoy the fun and competition of
navigation events. The events are also a great social
event and always include a social sizzle and a few drinks
at the Presentation held after each event at Main Beach,
Dux or at Little Ships.
Boats of any size or speed can compete in these events
on an equal footing, so there is no excuse to leave
your boat tied up or on its trailer. The events are held
throughout the boating season from September to June
each year. So there is plenty of time to get ready to
compete in the 2012-13 series.

EASTER CRUISE

Will we get to Bribie, what about Mooloolaba?
The Easter Cruise this year commenced the week before Easter
with the first night at Dux. The “cruisers” joined with the “Log
eventers” for their presentation and “traditional” lunch. The
questions on everyone’s mind were: What are the odds on getting
to Bribie? And then: What about Mooloolaba? We should have
a bookmaker amongst the cruisers as the odds weren’t very
favourable at that point in time. All the on-line weather sites were
predicting increasing winds over the next few days. The decision
was then made to proceed north the next morning, but not to the
more exposed anchorage of St. Helena Island as originally planned
but to Deanbilla Bay. Monday morning we awoke to calm seas and
an improving weather forecast so up the Bay the SYC cruising
fleet headed making a direct course for the Coffee Pots and then
onto Bribie Bridge. After crossing the Brisbane Harbour entrance a
couple of boats thought that they would take a more direct route
to Bribie Bridge. Shortly afterwards the radio crackled to life with
the enquiry asking the water depths on that course. Oops! They
decided to change course back to the main fleet; Moreton Bay
may have some deep water areas but then there are shallows and
banks and not the type you wish to visit.
The boats continuing onto Mooloolaba anchored up on the south
side of the bridge ready for their departure the following day
whilst the Pumicestone Passage explorers opted for the more
protected waters on the north side of the bridge. Anchors were
just set when under the bridge came Helen and Terry on “Nyleta”
sporting their new electric winch. This eighty + year old vessel
only took an extra 20 minutes for the trip from Dunwich to
Bribie and arrived with the fuel gauge still showing full. What
a boat!! A leisurely start was made next morning for the cruise
up the Bribie Passage. Every skipper had their eyes glued to
chart plotters picking their course to follow the deeper water
on their way to Mission Point for the overnight anchorage where
there is a bush camping area. What a beautiful area; only a few
campers amongst the trees and goannas the size of crocodiles.
The following day we headed back down the Passage to another
anchorage at Poverty Point. We all agreed it was aptly named and
not suitable for the prevailing winds so it was back up to Mission
Point for another night.
After cruising with the main group for the first three days seven
boats that had elected to go to Mooloolaba left Bribie Passage
bright and early at 6.30am on Tuesday so as to beat the weather
forecast for later in the day (3mtr seas and 20 to30 kt S/E winds).
The first participants of the E.C.G. (Extended Cruising Group)
were John & Pam Roy “Semper Fi”(Clipper 40) , Dean & Jan
Woodward “Charma” (Dominator), Bruce & Deslie Harvey “Sea
Harrier”(Fairway) ,Mike & Marj Hickman “Inverlokkie”(Alaska
46), Lindsay & Susan Roberts “Suella” (Fairway), Lindsay’s father
and mother on “Nebo” were to join us on the cruise but had to
leave early, Allan & Margaret Murphy on “Tranquility” (Seawind
sailing cat with their new screecher flying) and John & Susan Hall
“Cavallino”(Riviera 37). This intrepid group of mariners arrived
at the Wharf Marina Mooloobaba after a very pleasant cruise up
the coast, clear blue skies, mild sea and a light S/Easter behind
us ably lead by Lindsay and Susan on “Suella”.
With boats secured in their berths, crews headed off in all
directions to inspect this lovely port, agreeing to meet for drinks
and important decision making (i.e. at which restaurant would
we eat tonight) at “Sea Harrier” around 1600hrs. After much talk
Lindsay’s upmarket Thai was the place, plastic tables and chairs,
BYO wine and glasses, decor backstreet Bangkok, food excellent
a fun night was had by all.
Day two wake up “Oh Hell “not another day of clear blue skies
and 30 plus temps, what to do? Maybe the beach, long lunch at
one of the many beach front restaurants. All seemed to enjoy the
day what with more drinks at 1600hrs this time at ”Charma ”with
dinner at the Surf Club just up the road.

Thursday morning an early start 6 am again to beat the later expected southerly
blow. On leaving Mooloolaba the E.C.G. cruisers split (to re-join the main fleet later)
five boats to try their luck at or near Tangalooma, too exposed, so continued on to
Deanbilla Bay to be joined by main fleet on Friday, the two others, Cavillino back to
Bribie Passage and Samper Fi onto Scarborough and a further five weeks cruising .
With the good ship Cavallino anchored at around 9am the intrepid crew were taking
in a late breakfast when the radio sparked into life, could it be? Yes, there was the
flag ship of the fleet “Cats Away” under the command of Admiral Bob and Lady Joan
leading the fleet back to safe anchorage and civilization after a harrowing two days
exploring the notorious Pumicestone Passage.

So elated with their success were the crews that they followed in the age old custom
of crews returning from a great adventure, went ashore for a night of reveling and
good cheer at none other than Eskimo Nells or was that Flaming Nells no matter. A
great night was had by all and at last report no locals found themselves bound in the
bilges of any of the fleet destined to swab the decks to some far off port.
As the sun was barely up the flag ship “Cats Away” with the Admiral and the lovely
Lady Joan were off home for another engagement.
Meanwhile, someone the night before whilst under the influence of the fruit of the
grape decided that the remaining fleet should have another early start, up anchoring
at 6.30am for the trip across Moreton Bay to Deanbilla Bay to join with the other five
boats of the fleet.
This leg was led by Bob and Cheryl Moxham on their lovely Grand Banks “Grand
Finale’”. We were greeted by a reasonable amount of swell and wind on leaving Bribie
until reaching the mark off Deception Bay and could lay a course to cross the Brisbane
shipping channel passing between St Helena and Mud Islands then around Peel and into
our anchorage for the day.

As the cruise had long departed from the planned anchorages it was decided to move
to Blaksleys for Saturday evening and have end of cruise drinks on the beach at 1600
hrs. as a number were heading home on Sunday, others to Dux for a few days.
The camaraderie of SYC cruises was very evident on this cruise; when a toilet failed
to operate on a twin hull boat, rather than kitty litter being provided, a porta potti
miraculously appeared from the caverns of a particular Grand Banks where there is not
one but two or three of everything you may need. Another boat, on which you might
still find an original oil lamp, could hardly be missed at night; it was lit up like a gin
palace when a generator was loaned.
Overall a great cruise and if you missed out this time be certain to have your name on
the list for the June Cruise.

2012 GO TO BLAZERS REGATTA

The 2012 Go To Blazers was sailed over the weekend of 17th/
18th March with 11 entries including 3 from Noosa. Saturday
turned on light winds to test the sailors’ boat handling finesse
and 22-28 Knots Sunday tested the competitors boat handling
skills as the spinnakers went up and the boats flew downwind
over the Windward/Leeward course. There were some special
prizes given out at the presentations after racing on Sunday.
The Youth Squad of Jack Sherring, John Bucknall, Fletcher
Sewell and Tom Siganto received a mangle wind pennant for
their downwind roll in as the spinnaker sheets tangled around
the top of the rig and destroyed the chook. Bundy Express
sailed by Jake Restall, Simon Restall, Sam Sewell and Adam
(Stiffy) Janzyck received 4 x Afloat hats for their swimming
efforts on downwinds, (they should have supplied prawns for
BBQ).

A BUSY 10 DAYS!

The Hervey Bay Easter Regatta is fantastic event that every
year a variation of Southport Sailors travel up to compete
in. Tom Siganto and I attended our second year together in
the 29er class. With fellow sailors Sophie Lahey and Georgia
Cronin also sailing their 29er “Frequent Flyer” we had a fleet
of 4. Some may have seen the “3 Old Blokes” sailing a 16 foot
skiff at our Club recently. “Shoot the Donkey” was also towed
up to Hervey Bay to compete in its first regatta with the new
crew.
Three days of racing played out where one of which the ‘16’
crew could not compete due to hull damage. By the end, Tom
and I finished in 1st place after taking out every race with
Sophie and Georgia finishing second and the ’16 foot skiff’
crew sailed impressively for the final 2 days or the regatta.
This was only the beginning for us as we were to fly to
Melbourne on Tuesday for an Australian Youth Team training
camp in Sorrento.

Southport Yacht Club’s 12-year-old competitor, Harry Smith,
is competing on board Menace with USA skipper Vince Brun
and Australian crew Michael Coxon and Paul Westlake.
He has taken time out from his school studies with the full support
of his school, The Southport School. He first stepped on an Etchells
just a few weeks ago and was competition blooded at the recent
Australian Championship where the Menace team finished fifth.
“I was down here (Sydney) about a month ago sailing with
Dad on Wild Oats. Flipper (Paul Westlake) was on the main
and he noticed me and said I could be a good fourth-man on
the Etchells crew that Cocko (Michael Coxon) was putting
together”.
We had 3 days of light air training with beautiful clear
skies against the best 29er sailors in the country. Our rivals
being Harry Price and Nathan Edwards made us work hard
for our training before leading into the Victorian Youth
State Championships. With a little more breeze building for
the regatta, we managed to control the 13 boat fleet how
we wanted. Some intense racing against Harry and Nathan
brought us good rewards. We finished with a scoreboard of
2,1,2,1,1,2,1,1,2,1 putting us in first place overall to win the
Championships. It was an extremely worthwhile training camp
with Shane Smith coaching us throughout. Some amazing
experience was gained and we will now continue preparing
for our Youth Worlds Campaign.
Back to school now but what a great school holidays it was!!
THE GREAT RACE
The Records Tumble!!!!!!!!!
The 2012 running of “The Great Race” was one for the record
books with organisers worried about the conditions being too
strong to safely conduct the race right up to the early hours
of race day. Upon arriving at the Club at 6am the winds were
25-30 knots with heavy rain and visibility down to 100 metres
at best.
Clinging to hopes that the forecast was correct we held out.
Sure enough, as the race start time was closing in, the rain
cleared and the winds dropped allowing the race to go ahead.
A fast race and new records were on the cards with good
breezes and tidal assistance and the direction almost perfect
for most boats.
Of the 62 entries, 45 finished (but some didn’t start due to
weather) with nine retirements.
There are 2 new times to beat next year:
Team Harken, the Hobie Wildcat sailed by Grant Pellew and
Jack Benson, now hold the Multihull record which fell from a
2:57:18hrs Elapsed Time down to 2:43:32.
20 Good Reasons, the Foiling Moth sailed by Steve Sherring
smashed the Monohull record of 3:44:48 Elapsed Time down
to 2:39:58.
Congratulations to all those competitors who braved the
elements and made the finish.
A very big thank you to all of our waystation and rescue boat
volunteers and the sponsors, Fastway Couriers, Sports Super
Centre, Club Marine and Harken for their continued support.

EVOLUTION SAILS 2 HANDED SERIES
The 2011/ 2012 Sailing Season has now concluded with a full
complement of Championship, Sprint and Trophy races. 47
boats in five divisions contested the races with a good mix of
conditions from light to heavy, tidal and both short and long
distance races.
Another great 2 Handed Series has been sailed recently with
the 10 entrants receiving a mixture of weather conditions to
test them all, from the pouring rain and moderate breezes of
Saturday to the sunny and windy conditions on Sunday.

SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB MEMBER SOPHIE LAHEY WINS THE MARINASSESS
WOMEN’S MATCH RACING REGATTA
For Lahey and her crew, who came together for this regatta,
the win was a good one. “I’ve had some good results at regattas
hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. This time last
year, I was part of the winning crew in the 2011 Harken Women’s
International Match Racing regatta and it feels great to be back
on top of the podium again,” she said.
Lahey also competed in the Club Marine NSW Youth Match Racing
championships in August last year, also hosted by the CYCA,
where she placed fourth.
“My crew are experienced match racers and we progressively got
better as a team throughout the regatta.
“One of our toughest matches today was against Stephanie
Strong. The pre start was close and we managed to win that
battle, but Strong was better on the downwind leg than us yet
we came away with the win in the end,” Lahey added.
Sophie Lahey and her crew of Rayshele Martin, Ali Sutherland
and Georgia Cronin representing Southport Yacht Club, have won
the Marinassess Women’s Match Racing regatta by three points
from Kirstin Norris representing Royal Australian Navy (RAN) with
Stephanie Strong representing Sandringham Yacht Club in third
place a further point adrift.
Sophie finished round robin two with a perfect scorecard of six
wins.
The Marinassess Women’s Match Racing regatta was conducted
by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on the Youth Sailing
Academy’s Elliott 6.0m boats.
QJODA QUEENSLAND OPTIMIST STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations Kyle O'Connell for his 1st Placing and adding
Queensland Optimist State Champion to his list of titles as
he continues his preparations for the Optimist Worlds in the
Dominican Republic in July 2012. Kyle competed along with
14 of our Opti sailors in Brisbane recently with 8 in the Open
Fleet and 7 in the Green Fleet. Most of the Green Fleet sailors
have not long completed their learn to sail course and it was
awesome to see them competing in their first regatta already.
I am sure we will soon see their names appearing in the top
order of the Open Fleet Results.

2012 MELGES 32 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS
Congratulations Noel and Ben Leigh-Smith’s ‘Desperado”
It was a tough day at the office for the final day of racing off
Palm Beach in the Melges 32 Australian Championships hosted
by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club. Winds of 25 plus knots,
averaging 18-22 from the South, South West and a confused
seaway provided conditions for plenty of thrills and spills and
exciting rides for the final three races.
Jamie McPhail, the tactician aboard winning yacht Desperado
said “we had a nice speed edge over the other boats to
windward, the right was favoured and we made the best
use of it. We blew out a shoot on the first run of the last
race though”. Noel Leigh-Smith from Southport Yacht Club
commented that it was a great day of offshore racing, “I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.” Southport Yacht Club │ iN SYnC │27
VICE-COMMODORE SAIL REPORT

I can’t believe it’s been six months since the Sydney to Hobart
Race. As you may know we had a D1 rigging fault just off Eden
and were forced to pull out. The crew and boat were all in
good shape just a little disappointed.
So what would drag us back into another long race?
The answer is the RQYS Brisbane to Noumea yacht race 830nm
from start to finish if we sail straight or the weather permits a
straight passage, it won’t.
So the mast has been in and out and back in all checked and
ready to go, the boat’s been out of the water and been re anti
fouled and fared and is looking very fast.
I think 6 months ago I was complaining about the amount of
paperwork and checks required to sail in a Cat 1 offshore race,
well as hard as it is, it’s worse when the race ends overseas
and you need passports, visas and TWO Temporary Passes an Australian Government form from the AMSA ( Australian
Maritime Safety Authority) which is under sub section 23(1)
of the ship registration Act 1981 and enables us to sail out of
Australian waters to a foreign port and the second visa is so
we can return. They’re not cheap.
It was easy sailing to Hobart. There is the coast of Australia for
70% of the trip and then even more back to Southport. On this
adventure, once we leave Moreton Island we are on our own
until Noumea, and the same for the trip home.
Five of the Hobart crew had put their hand up to take up the
challenge again and thanks to them and the five new crew
that aren’t new to the boat just this race.
The start is Sunday afternoon at 1300 from RQ on the 3rd June
and the race can take between 100 to 150 hours all going well.
The boat has a Facebook page and there will be a yacht
tracker from the race control. For more info RQ has an active
web site design to show how good or bad we are doing.
SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB LOOK TO REVITALISE OFFSHORE SAILING

The Offshore Committee of the Southport Yacht Club is looking
to revitalise offshore yacht racing in the coming 2012-2013
season. As the Offshore Representative I have designed a new
format which breaks the sailing calendar up into four distinct
racing seasons with new courses designed to match the
prevailing weather conditions and the various racing divisions.
The new program has been developed in response to a survey
of yacht owners and skippers conducted in late March 2012.
The survey clearly showed that fleet numbers would increase
if a more consistent and fairer approach to handicapping,
more interesting courses, racing on Sunday mornings and
more appropriate racing Divisions could be on offer. The
new program has been developed in conjunction with the
Sailing Rear Commodore Matt Percy and the staff at SYC. It is
proposed that the program could consist of:
Winter Short-haul Series
(6 race series consisting of short passage type courses off Main
Beach):
Spring Series
(6 race series consisting of passage and windward/leeward
courses off Main Beach and culminating in the first race of the
SYC Offshore Championship).
Summer Series
(8 race series consisting of passage type courses over various
distances and to include the Julian Rocks Overnight Race.
Autumn Series
(4 race series consisting of mainly short passage type
courses and culminating in the final race of the SYC Offshore
Championship).
Offshore Championship. A new SYC Offshore Championship
Series would be comprised of six passage type races over
the entire season with the Club Offshore Champion being
announced at an Offshore Sailing Ball at the Club in May 2013.
Trophies would be awarded for each division in each race, each
division for each season, overall winners and the Offshore Club

CAT WEEK By Kerry Noyes
Incorporating the F18 State Championships and South East
Queensland Nacra Championships
Gold Coast Cat week continues to grow in numbers, this year
a total of 31 Catamarans with a number of different classes.
Racing was held in varying conditions over the week suiting all
levels of sailors.
Competitors came from all over Australia with entrants from
as far North as Cairns and South as Sydney. Many of the F18
entrants were testing the water for the F18 Infusion World
Titles to be held February 2013.
The weekend saw excellent winds with some very close and
consistent racing. Tuesday 21st saw conditions from one end of
the scale to the other, racing commenced in light winds with a
storm cloud brewing to the west, after the first windward the
storm hit the fleet resulting in some very interesting moments
plenty of capsizing and 1 broken F18 Mast. Conditions returned
to typical February on Wednesday after a late night repairing
Masts and centreboards.
Extremely close racing with results in the F18’s coming down
to 1 race on the last day. F18 Crew “Ulman Sails” Dale Mitchel
and Jamie Leightner (Cairns) winning by 1 point over 2nd
placed “Nacra NQ” Mick Guinea and Vince Hilton (Townsville)
and third by 1 point “Sneaky To” Warren Guinea and local
sailor Adam Lahey. Results for Division 1 also very close with
“Wayfast” Steve Curtis and Kerry Noyes 1st, “Bliksem” John
Dowling 2nd and “Allante” Guy O’Bren and Mike Sabin 3rd.
Craig Kneebone took out division 2 with Darryl Skinner in his
Arrow Cat Air Power 2 was once again victorious in division 3.
An excellent week of racing and socialising once again with all
competitors pledging to return next year.

for the Whitsundays series with race weeks at Airlie Beach,
Hamilton Island and culminating with Magnetic Island race
Week. Four days after that I’m off to Noumea for the around
Noumea race.

We had a splendid Day At The Bay in April. Despite the rain which in fact
gave a rather surreal cloudy bay effect, the views were spectacular. Many
remarked on the beautifully renovated homes along the way.
Our first stop was at the historic Full Moon Hotel in Sandgate. If you are
up Sandgate way a visit to the Hotel is a must. We had a superb morning
tea and wandered down the road to the village. As always on our trips
some managed to find a treasure or two in the shops and boutiques. We
then headed across the Hornibrook Highway Bridge to Redcliff and on to
Woody Point to the famous Belvedere Hotel. What a magnificent hotel
with a room for every occasion catering to morning teas, lunches, dinner,
function etc totally renovated yet retaining its original glory. After being
seated in our exclusive and intimate dining room, we enjoyed a wine
tasting followed by a scrumptious two course lunch.
On the way home, we surprised most of our guests at SYC Hollywell as
some had never been before whilst others had not viewed the renovations.
SYC Hollywell manager Michael looked after our group with bubbles and
canapés and we held our raffle draw. And so ended a very full yet relaxing
getaway. Sincere thanks to Anne Maree von Zeppelin for her attention to
detail in arranging the day.

for our Treasurer Carmel Nicholas who has stepped down due to health
