1 . H OW TO U S E T H I S G U I D E
DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHTS
KEY
• Dimensions and weights are provided as a guide. All Porta
Symbols have been used to note an important detail of a product.
Romana products are made by hand and variations can occur
in some products.
• Where dimensions are shown in inches they are rounded to the
nearest 1/4”.
• Where a dimension is shown as an approximate value, i.e. the
blown glass products, the variation can be as much as 1 1/2”.
• HEIGHT OF TABLE LAMP is always measured from the base of
the item to the bottom of the lamp holder.
• HEIGHT WITH SHADE is measured from the base of the item
to the top of the lampshade.
• HEIGHT OF WALL SCONCE is measured from the base of the
item to the bottom of the lamp holder OR to the top of the
product (whichever is the highest).
Items with this symbol are not suitable for rodding
and bolting (for use on yachts). See page 164 for
more information.
Items with this symbol have external wiring, i.e. the cord
exits from the lampholder.
The lampshade that accompanies this product has keyhole
fixings which require attaching to the wall.
Items with this symbol are suitable for use in bathrooms.

CORDS
• Table lamps are wired with Silver, Brown or Charcoal silk cord.
Some coloured glass lamps have colour co-ordinated cord
• PROJECTION OF WALL SCONCE includes the recommended
lampshade.

- Silver cord is supplied with Nickel/Silver/Perspex/Glass finishes.
• TOTAL DROP OF CHANDELIER includes the ceiling canopy,
one metre of chain and fixture.
- Brown cord is supplied with Brass/Gold/Bronze finishes.
- Charcoal cord is supplied with Slate bases.
• MINIMUM DROP OF CHANDELIER includes the ceiling canopy,
minimum length of chain possible and fixture. The ceiling
canopy depth and chain or rod lengths are also listed separately.
• LAMPSHADE DIMENSIONS are shown BASE X TOP X SLANT
or BASE X DEPTH X SLANT (see images below) unless

DIFFUSERS OR BAFFLES can be used on most table and floor
lamp shades. Diffusers can be fitted to the base of the shade to
shield the view of a bulb or a Baffle can be fitted to the top of
a shade to reduce the glare from the bulb. Diffusers and Baffles
are available in Perspex in either Champagne or Frosted White
finishes.
CUSTOMER OWN DIMENSIONS can be quoted for ceiling shades,
shades for wall sconces, table and floor lamps. Please specify

FIXING STYLES
RE-COVERING customers existing frames is possible providing
Porta Romana lampshades are designed to be fitted to Porta
Romana Lampbases and most shades for table lamps are
supplied as standard with ES Gimble fittings. Finial fittings can be
supplied where shades are purchased separately. This is a custom
option and must be quoted for.

A sample of fabric must be seen and approved for suitability by
Head Office prior to confirming a COM order. Fabric must be
supplied on a roll NOT folded as this may result in creasing in the

TRIMS can be selected from our collection of silks or satins or
use Customer Own Trim to add a decorative element to the top
and/or base of lampshades.
PLEATED LAMPSHADES are available in Box, Knife and Vertical
Gather. Please contact your representative for pricing.
WALL SHADES can be adapted to ensure you have the perfect
solution for your space.
Key hole fittings for wall sconce shades fix the shade directly to
the wall. This minimises the gap and the amount of light escaping
from the back of the shade (a surcharge may be applicable).
CORRIDOR SHADES can be used in conjunction with some wall
sconces to minimise projection (maximum depth 4”/100mm).
FABRICS BY THE METRE
All fabrics are available to purchase by the metre. Minimum order
quantity is 5 yards.
IKAT FABRICS
Our stunning ikat fabrics are hand woven in Uzbekistan. One
weaver can create 3m of fabric a day - it is very labour intensive
and its rustic charm is the reason we fell in love with ikats.
Hand weaving is the real deal - our ikats are not printed and
the dyes are natural. For example the blue tones in Kite and
Sultan are Indigo dyed, which is produced from the leaves of the
delicate flower.
The fabric is hot pressed during finishing to achieve the
traditional sheen, which can leave irreversible creasing. These
complex fabrics are not flawless - this adds to the beautiful
characteristics of an artisan product and helps us to make an
emotional connection to traditions past.
PRODUCT INFORMATION
Porta Romana lampshades are made from a beautiful range of
silks and satins. It is in the nature of some silks to have random
slubs throughout.
Please be aware that colours may vary slightly from batch to
batch. It will not be possible to guarantee an exact match to any
product that you may have previously purchased.
Silks tend to be more susceptible to fading than most other
fabrics, and are not guaranteed to be lightfast. We recommend
that your lampshades are positioned away from direct sunlight.

Where furniture items are listed as requiring wall fixing, the wall
fixing brackets are part of the design of the product. A standard
screw pack is supplied but may not be suitable for all wall types.
Consoles which are fixed to the wall are not designed to bear an
unreasonable weight and are not all suitable for custom sizing.
Please refer to individual product information. Care must also be
taken to distribute any load evenly.

NON-STANDARD WOOD/POLISHED TOP FINISHES
Changing a wood or polished top to one of the options below
will incur the following upcharge
All upholstered furniture is supplied with a schedule 3 interliner.
Upholstery fabric supplied to Porta Romana must be either
75% natural fibre, cotton, flax, viscose, modal, silk or wool OR
be appropriately fireproofed to comply with the Furniture and
Furnishings Fire & Safety Regulations 1988.
A sample of Customer own material (COM) must be seen and
approved for suitability by Head Office prior to confirming an
order. Please be aware that a patterned fabric may alter the
quantity of fabric required. An upcharge of 30% is applied for
upholstery with leather or mohair fabric.
BLOWN GLASS
Blown glass products are unique and individually made. As a
consequence there will be a variance in the finish of each lamp.
Porta Romana will make every effort to keep that variation to a
minimum and will match pairs upon request. Slight differences in
shape, colour hue, size and the air bubbles in each lamp are to
be expected.

Slate is used in several of our designs. Slate is a natural mineral
and therefore can contain irregularities that characterise its
authenticity. There are sometimes natural mineral deposits
visible which should not be treated as a defect but as part of the
inherent charm of natural slate.
CUSTOM SIZING
FURNITURE
Porta Romana furniture is either hand-polished or hand-painted
and lacquered. The nature of these products means that they do
require some special care and attention in order to retain their
finish and quality. Any extreme wear and tear can be detrimental
to the finish and we do not recommend use in a contract situation.
Please contact your representative for advice if your furniture is
destined for an area where it will receive any heavy wear. We are
very happy to quote for provision of a protective glass top. More
specific care instructions can be found on page 165.
BASE AVAILABLE SEPARATELY
Some items of furniture are available to purchase without a top.
This is often requested if a stone or granite top is being selected
for local purchase. All pieces listed ‘base available separately’ are
strong enough to withstand a stone top of similar dimensions to
the standard top.

Custom sizing refers to a change in size of base, top OR an
entire piece of furniture. It can also apply to Upholstered
Furniture range and Mirrors. Please refer to specific product
information to clarify suitability for custom sizing.
The resizing of an item will require a quotation.
Please be aware of the aesthetic impact of changing sizes
and proportions of furniture. Our experts can discuss any
aspect of your custom piece with you. Please contact Head

6 . C A R E I N FO R M AT I O N
In order to maintain the appearance and nature of your products
FURNITURE
we recommend that you follow the care instructions below.
• POLISHED WOOD FURNITURE
LIGHTING
- Dust frequently using a soft lint-free absorbent cloth.
ALWAYS ENSURE THAT LAMPS ARE DISCONNECTED FROM A
LIVE ELECTRICAL SOURCE BEFORE CLEANING
All lamps must be picked up from beneath the base as their
weight cannot be supported by holding the lamp holder. Damage
will occur if table lamps are not handled in this manner and Porta
Romana will not be responsible for replacement or repair.
• SLATE lamp bases should require very little maintenance.
Marks and spills should be wiped with a damp cloth and white
spirit can be used for more stubborn stains.
• PERSPEX lamp bases and bodies should be cleaned with a
soft, dry lint-free cloth. A damp cloth can be used if required,
followed by buffing with a dry cloth. No cleaning agents should
be used.
• BRONZE and BRASS lamp bases and bodies should be dusted
with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
• NICKEL and SILVER-PLATE lamp bases and bodies should
be dusted with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Light use of a
proprietary silver cloth periodically. Nickel must be kept free
from moisture or condensation.
• GLASS and CERAMIC lamp bases should be dusted with a soft,
dry, lint-free cloth. Wipe with a damp cloth if necessary.
• PAINTED and GILDED finishes should be dusted with a dry, lint
free cloth. No cleaning products should be used.
Always polish with the grain of the wood, not against it.
- Avoid wax and silicone polishes, as they may be harmful to
the finish.
- Clean up spills immediately. Use a blotting action rather than a
wiping action.
- Keep wooden furniture away from sources of heat and
direct sunlight.
• POLISHED GLOSS TOPS (Black Lacquer/Cream Lacquer/
Conker Gloss)
- Gloss Surfaces should be cleaned using a micro-fibre
cleaning cloth.
- Any marks should be removed with silicone free furniture
polish. No abrasive cleaners or hard wax should be used as this
will have a detrimental effect.
• MATT FINISH TOPS (Dark Fumed Oak/Pippy Oak/
Faux Limestone/Faux Slate/Faux Shagreen)
- Matt surfaces should be cleaned using a micro fibre
cleaning cloth.
- This surface may burnish if rubbed with an abrasive material
or cleaner so any stains should be removed with glass cleaner,
followed up by buffing with a dry cloth.
GENERAL FURNITURE ADVICE
• Use pads, cloth or felt to protect surfaces from plastic, rubber,

Where a Wall Sconce is specified as being suitable for Bathroom
use, the suitability is warranted only with regard to the
regulatory approval for the wiring system which is UL and CUL
listed for damp locations. The Wall Sconce is not warranted
for bathroom use in terms of construction material, finish or
lampshade material and the suitability on these grounds must be
judged by the Interior Designer or the end user based on their
understanding of the conditions of the space for which the wall
sconce is intended.
