CPN 166.12 CURRICULUM PROPOSAL NUMBER: MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD PROGRAM REVISION PROPOSAL SECTION B: PROPOSAL RATIONALE 19. Provide a curricular rationale for the proposed revised program, including any information regarding market needs or enrollment demands. When we designed our current curriculum we were expecting students to take the Psy 231-232 sequence in their sophomore year, Psy 330 in their junior year, and Psy 430 in either junior or senior year, with the option of doing additional research in psychology later. Currently majors need 4 semesters in order to complete these four required courses. We have experienced a large number of transfer students coming in as juniors and needing to get into the Psy 231-232 sequence right away in order to complete their degree in four semesters. In order to meet the enrollment demands, we have been forced to increase the size of Psy 231 every semester and add a lab, for a number of years. However, as our major numbers have increased, it has been very difficult to accommodate all the students trying to get into the class. If we compare present numbers to 2000, when we had 192 majors, we've had a 43% increase in majors, and we went from 4 to over 80 minors. As a consequence, many of our majors and minors have not been able to enroll in Psy 231 until their junior year, and many students wishing to switch majors have been discouraged by the prospect of needing 4 extra semesters to graduate. We have been offering Psy 231 and Psy 232 every semester. Typically faculty responsible for the Psy 231-232 sequence have been limited in their ability to teach elective courses, because of the load involved (6 credits with the labs for each course). In addition, our Psy 231 and Psy 232 classes counted for 3 credits each, and students have been complaining for years that the class should have more credits to reflect the amount of work it involves and the lab component. Also, as we have been teaching these courses we have discovered that there is a great degree of Methods overlap between the Stats/Method courses and Psy 330, Experimental Psychology. In addition, it has become very difficult to maintain requirement of Psy 430 Advanced Experimental Psychology for all majors, as our the number of majors has increased dramatically. Students in this class conduct an independent research project under faculty supervision, and we keep the enrollment to a manageable size of 15. We would have to either increase the number of sections we offer, and continue to experience limitations in our elective offerings, or make it an elective class and recommend that students with a higher GPA that would be eligible for graduate school take it. We decided to make Psy 430 an elective. Our program revisions introduce some flexibility in our curriculum, and allow us to be more efficient in our course offerings by discontinuing the 2-semester sequence, focusing the statistics part in one course with a lab and increasing the credits to the students from 3 to 4, while maintaining the existing load (6 credits) for the faculty teaching the class with 2 labs. The content of Psy 330 is changing a little to reflect an emphasis on both Method and writing. Psy 430 is now an elective we would recommend to students eligible for graduate school. We expect that these changes will contribute to an increase in the number of students graduating with a Psychology major, as they will make our program more flexible and attractive to transfer students and students wishing to switch majors in their junior year. 20. As Social Studies coordinator, I am happy to inform you that substituting the new Psychology 230 statistics class for the old Psychology 231 class is a minor change and is acceptable for the Social Studies major at MSUM. This is because it is the right of a department to implement program changes, and because in this case, it is merely adding one credit to the Primary Emphasis in Psychology. There are other primary concentrations that require 25 credits for the primary emphasis, notably Geography, and another that requires 26 credits, Sociology. In conclusion, there is no objection within the Social Studies realm CPN 166.12 CURRICULUM PROPOSAL NUMBER: MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD PROGRAM REVISION PROPOSAL for your changes in the statistics class numbering or number of credits (increased from 3 to 4 credits.) Please inform me of the change in the major when it has been approved by the powers that are in charge and then the Social Studies Committee will vote on the proposal and send it through the educational channels as a minor change in the program (for the increase in credits). Thank you for consulting with the Social Studies program. Sincerely, Steve Hoffbeck Social Studies Coordinator. ----- Original Message ----From: "Magda Chalikia" <[email protected]> To: "Steve Hoffbeck" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 23, 2012 4:07:18 PM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: Re: Social Studies Dear Steve, Thanks so much for getting back to me. We are introducing some changes in our major, and one of them affects the Social Studies program. Here is what we are proposing to do: Discontinue the Psy 231-232 6 cr sequence (Stats/Method I and II). Create a new course (tentative number is Psy 230) that will be called Statistics for the Behavioral Science. This will be a 4 cr class (with lab), and will focus on stats with a bit of Method. The follow up class will be Psy 330 (currently Experimental Psychology, our WI course). Our majors will have to take both of these. Yours will have to take the new Psy 230. So the impact for the Social Studies major with emphasis in Psychology will be a 1 credit increase (from 24 credits to 25 credits), because the course that will be the substitute for Psy 231 (the new Psy 230) will be 4 credits. Incidentally, the Social Science concentration in the Criminal Justice program requires Social Behavior (Psy 220) rather than Psy 231, and that could be an alternative (minor change without changing the overall credits). Otherwise, you may have to change the overall credits to 25 from 24. As I understand the new committees you will have to go through your College's curriculum committee for this change as we go through ours. According to the new process, we are obligated to consult with you since our changes impact your program. And we need to present evidence, in the form of minutes showing that our proposed changes have been discussed and what your position is, as one of the documents we need to submit. We plan to bring the changes to our college curriculum committee as soon as possible (but probably not by Feb 10 when they have their next meeting). Could you please discuss our change and let me know what your committee's sentiment is? Thank you very much, Magda 21. Cut/paste documentation of consultation with Collection Management Librarian regarding this proposal into the box below. Larry, This is the third time I am sending this message regarding a new course we are proposing. We have all the documents ready to go, but we haven't heard from you. Am I to assume you have no issues with our new course? Thanks, Magda Dr. Magdalene H. Currently students are required among other things to take two semesters of Stats/Method (6 credits) and two semesters of Experimental classes (6 credits). We are creating a new Statistics class (4 credits) as outlined below, and making the second experimental class an elective, and also increasing the credits in the electives from 15 to 18. The content of the affected classes collectively will not change (even though there will be shifts of material across classes). Please let me know whether or not these changes will be an issue for the library, regarding required support. Thanks much, Magda Dr. Magdalene H. We want to introduce a new course: Psy 230 Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences. In essence we are eliminating Psy 231, Psy 232 (Stats/Method I and II) and creating a new stats class that will have a lab component and will be 4 credits. This course will focus on stats only, and in that respect will combine the stats material (including labs) from the two separate courses we currently have. The method component is already incorporated in Psy 330 (our WI course). So we want to reduce redundancy and make it possible to cover the Stats component in one semester. This is typically how the class is taught in many other institutions. Because we are proposing this new class we need to consult with you regarding library support etc. We think this should not be an issue because we are in essence replacing existing courses with a more stream lined one. I would appreciate receiving a reaction from you on this matter. PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT Faculty Meeting Minutes January 20, 2012 A Psychology Department Faculty Meeting was held Friday, January 20, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. in BR 362. Present: M. Chalikia (MC), G. Nickell (GN), E. Nawrot (LN), M. Racek (PR), C. Malone (CM), L. H. Stewart (LS), R. Bergstrom (RB), M. Potter (PP), R. Kolotkin (RK), O. Melroe (OM), J. Guffey (JG) A draft of Fall 2012 schedule was distributed. Permanent faculty are currently the only ones listed. Budget for FY 13 - Operating Budget Review & Recommendation: Following recommendations from the University Planning and Budget Committee there is a new process for FY 2013. We will be generating budget requests based upon our needs. Five years of expenditure data will be provided to us with guidelines, as a means of helping us with the planning process. We should be getting these data by the end of the month. We will complete the request as part of our work plan. 4-year reports: Faculty received a list of names and a reminder. Student evaluations: Dean Malott does not need the original scantron sheets submitted, nor does she require all the student comments. Student Academic Conference Panelist: Dean Malott is soliciting nominations for student panelists. Let MC know if you have any names to suggest. BR 367 (aka Perception Lab): PP is using the lab once a week for a SP lab. Undergrad research needs were discussed. It was agreed that for this semester JG will add a checkout schedule in the black room reservation book, and students can reserve the room for research as needed. - College Curriculum Committees will review proposals which should include evidence of consultation with other programs when appropriate. If such other programs belong to a different college then they may have to go through their own College Curriculum Committee. We don't yet have dates on when these committees will be meeting. And they won't all meet at the same time. - Membership on these committees is through the end of spring and new members will be appointed for next year (except for whoever is elected chair). The faculty had a continued discussion on the curriculum changes/implementation. Consultation must take place with affected departments/programs; this must be communicated and presented with email support. It was suggested that the new stats class will be numbered Psy 230 and MC will check with the registrar to make sure that this number is available. A number of motion were made with regard to changes in the major that were decided at the previous faculty meeting. CPN 166.12 CURRICULUM PROPOSAL NUMBER: MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD PROGRAM REVISION PROPOSAL LHS made a motion to call the new stats class Psy 230: Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences. This will be a 4cr class with a lab. LN seconded the motion. Further discussion ensued. All in favor, motion carries. LN made a motion to change the name of Psy 330 from Experimental Psychology to Experimental Method. LHS seconded the motion All in favor, motion carries PP moved to discontinue Psy 231(Psychological Statistics and Methodology I) & Psy 232 (Psychological Statistics and Methodology II) once the new major is in effect. LHS seconded the motion All in favor, motion carries GN made a motion to change the number of credits for the Psychology minor from 24 to 25. RK seconded the motion All in favor, motion carries We will need to change the prerequisite for Psy 330 from Psy 232 to Psy 230. MC will contact the affected depts., regarding possible changes in the total credits their students will need as Psy 230 and Psy 330 (7 cr) will now substitute for Psy 231, and Psy 232 (6 cr). Affected departments include: Sociology for the Criminal Justice related requirements and Social Science concentration in Psychology Gerontology for the restricted electives and Social Studies, for the Primary Emphasis in Psychology requirements. In the case of Social Studies the overall credits for the Psychology emphasis will increase from 24 to 25. Our college curriculum committee will meet next on Feb 10th. Proposals will be due on the Friday before by noon Faculty discussed Educational Psychology. The Department of Education asked (through LHS) why our department is not teaching it. Historically this was a class taught by individuals with an Educational Psychology degree in the College of Education. Rachel Thompson requested $250 for expenses on her Second Life research project. This led to a further discussion concerning future guidelines for research requests by students. This topic is tabled for a future discussion. GN made a motion to contribute $250 to Rachel’s project, with the expectation that there will be a written report submitted at the end of the semester. LHS seconded the motion RK abstained due to the fact this request is made under his guidance.
