About
Hudson Valley Community College
Hudson Valley Community College’s mission is to provide
dynamic, student-centered, comprehensive and accessible
opportunities that address the diverse needs of the community.
Hudson Valley annually serves more than 14,000 credit
and non-credit students each year. The college was established
in 1953 as a technical school, but during the past five decades
has transformed itself into one of SUNY’s largest and most
comprehensive community colleges. The college is the sixth
largest community college in the SUNY system and has more
than 65,000 alumni.
The college is sponsored by Rensselaer County and is part
of the State University of New York system. Currently the
second largest public college or university in the Capital
Region, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than
70 degree and certificate programs through its four schools:
Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health
Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The college employs more than 630 full- and part-time
faculty members, and has a $360 million annual economic
impact on Rensselaer County, according to a recent analysis by
the Capital District Regional Planning Commission.
While 80 percent of Hudson Valley’s students come from
the Capital Region, the student population includes students
from nearly all of the counties of New York State, many other
states and dozens of foreign countries. The college is ranked in
the top three percent nationally in the number of associate
degrees awarded annually.
The college is accredited by the Commission on Higher
Education and is a member of the Middle States Association of
Colleges and Schools. All of Hudson Valley’s programs are
registered and approved by the New York State Department of
Education with the authority to award associate degrees in arts,
sciences, applied sciences and occupational studies, as well as
occupation-specific certificates. In addition, several of the
academic programs are accredited by specialized national
professional accrediting associations, such as the National
League for Nursing, the National Accrediting Agency for
Clinical Laboratory Sciences and the Accreditation Board for
Engineering and Technology.
2
As a full-opportunity college with a strong commitment to
teaching and learning, the college makes it possible for every
applicant to pursue a program of study.
Hudson Valley is committed to meeting the educational
and training needs of diverse constituencies. Within a year of
graduation, 94 percent of Hudson Valley graduates find
employment in their field or successfully transfer directly to a
four-year institution.
The college’s academic programs are designed to be
consistent with those offered by other two-year institutions
within the SUNY system and to promote compatibility and
transferability to four-year institutions. The college maintains
joint admission and transfer agreements with dozens of fouryear colleges and universities.
Hudson Valley also offers many distinctive programs,
including vocational apprenticeship programs, unique health
sciences programs and a General Education Certificate. For
example, Hudson Valley’s Dental Hygiene program is the only
one of its kind within an approximate 150-mile radius.
The college’s Workforce Development Institute coordinates
training programs and contracts for many area business and
government agencies. The Office of Continuing Education
offers credit-bearing courses at convenient times and places
and the Office of Community and Professional Education offers
a wide variety of non-credit and short-term courses that serve a
wide range of community and professional needs and interests.
The campus has extensive, state-of-the-art facilities to
support its academic programs, including the Bulmer
Telecommunications Center which encompasses the latest
innovations in multimedia presentation, videoconferencing,
teleconferencing, distance learning and instructional technology.
The college also provides student support services to
ensure success, including the Collegiate Academic Support
Program, the Learning Assistance Center, the Disability
Resource Center, the Peer Tutoring Program, the Smart Start
Program and the Viking Child Care Center. These services are
available to all students.

Athletic
Facilities
Hudson Valley Community College boasts some of the
finest athletic facilities found on any two-year college campus in
the country. Among the varsity sports held on the Troy grounds
are: men’s and women’s basketball; ice hockey; football;
women’s cross country; women’s tennis; men’s and women’s
soccer; men’s lacrosse; baseball; and softball. The college also
hosts physical education classes and intramural competitions on
its indoor and outdoor facilities.
All of Hudson Valley’s athletic teams enjoy the benefits of
the McDonough Sports Complex, a 126,000-square-foot
recreation facility that is home to a 4,000-seat gymnasium and
the first on-campus ice rink at any American community college.
The complex also has a weight room, indoor track, racquetball
courts and a fitness room with integrative adaptive equipment.
The baseball team plays at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on
campus, which seats 4,500 and also is host to the New York-Penn
League’s Tri-City ValleyCats, a Houston Astros-affiliated Class A
baseball team. The exercise physiology lab housed in the
stadium is one of the most complete in the Northeast and is
accessible to physical education students through classes.
Several other new outdoor fields were recently built
adjacent to the baseball stadium. The football, soccer, softball and
tennis teams all have new homes on the Hudson Valley campus.

Assistant Basketball
Coach
Ken Dagostino finished the 2009-10
basketball season at Hudson Valley
Community College by becoming
only the second coach in the
program’s history to win 20 games in
his first season as head coach. With
an overall record of 20-9, the Vikings
finished in third-place in the
Mountain Valley Conference, fourthplace in Region III, and advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region III Tournament.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Dagostino serves
as the college’s coordinator of intramurals.
Dagostino served as the director of basketball operations at
The University at Albany from April 2007 until September
2009. He was a member of the University at Albany coaching
staff during their memorable 2007 America East
Championship and NCAA Tournament run. Prior to that
appointment, he was a graduate assistant and video
coordinator for the Great Danes program. Dagostino also
served as the director of the Will Brown Boy’s Basketball
Camp.
Dagostino, who graduated cum laude and earned a bachelor’s
degree in business administration from Iona College, also
played four years. He began his career as a walk-on, but then
earned a scholarship for both his junior and senior seasons.
Dagostino was also a captain on Iona’s 2006 MAAC
Championship and NCAA Tournament team.
As a former local Section II student-athlete at Guilderland
High School, Dagostino was captain of the Dutchmen’s 2002
Suburban Council Championship team. As a former Section II
All-Star, Suburban Council All-Star, WNYT News Channel 13
All-Star, and Times Union & Daily Gazette All-Star, Dagostino
has the necessary experience to continue to recruit the quality
local student-athletes who have been a key part of the success
of the men’s basketball program here at Hudson Valley
Community College.
Dagostino currently resides in Guilderland with his wife and
their daughter.
Coach Doug Gejay enters his second
season on Coach Dagostino’s staff
after finishing a successful first season.
Gejay spent five seasons as an
assistant coach at Guilderland High
School. His duties included helping
Coach Ron Osinski and Coach Mike
Parks with practice, scouting and
game-day preparation. Coach Gejay has also spent many years
coaching at local basketball camps including the Dutchmen
Basketball Camp and the Sage Gators Camp at Sage College.
As a Suburban Council Section II student-athlete for four
years while at Guilderland High School, Gejay played a lead
role on the 2004 varsity basketball team, which achieved the
best record in school history as the undefeated Suburban
Council Champions and runner-up Sectional Finalists.
Gejay is a 2008 graduate of Western New England College in
Springfield, MA where he was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree
in Business Administration/ Sports Management. Gejay’s
college internship program was completed at Siena College
under the supervision of Athletic Director, John D’Argenio
and his staff.
Aaron Hahn
Assistant Basketball
Coach
Coach Aaron Hahn enters his second
season on Coach Dagostino’s staff
after having a successful first season.
Hahn has spent two years working as
a student assistant under Dagostino
while he was a member of the
University of Albany coaching staff.
This position required him to help
with practice, travel and game-day
preparation, as well as complete administrative duties. Coach
Hahn has also spent the last few summers helping area youth
improve their basketball skills as a coach at the Will Brown
Basketball Camp.
Coach Hahn was a four-year student-athlete for Olean High
School, located in Olean, NY. As a junior, he was a member of
the 2004-05 basketball teams that won the Chautauqua –
Cattaraugus Conference league title and started a string of 47
consecutive league wins by the program. As a senior, Hahn
was a member of the 2005-06 teams that completed the first
undefeated regular season in school history, won the
Cattaraugus Conference league championship, and finished
with an overall record of 22-1. The Olean High School
basketball team has received statewide recognition as a dynasty
program due to their success during the past ten years.
Hahn graduated summa cum laude in 2009 with a bachelor’s
degree in accounting and a minor in business administration
from the University at Albany. He is currently pursuing a
master’s degree in professional accountancy also at the
University at Albany.

2010-11
Season Preview
The men’s basketball team enters the 2010-11 season after a
successful first year under head coach Ken Dagostino last
season. The team won 20 games, finished third in the
Mountain Valley Conference and fourth in Region III. Coach
Dagostino finished the 2009-10 basketball season at Hudson
Valley Community College as only the second coach in the
program’s history to win 20 games in his first season as head
coach
This season, the Vikings will be missing some familiar faces
from their recent success:
• Ramel Alexander (Berkshire/Albany) finished his career as
the third all-time leading scorer (1,086), second all-time
leading rebounder (503), second all-time leader in assists
(157), and seventh all-time leader in assists (187). Alexander
is finishing up his degree this semester and will transfer to
Bloomfield College in New Jersey on a full scholarship
• Matt Harte (Lansingburgh/Troy) finished his career as the
sixth all-time leader in rebounding (363) and seventh in field
goal percentage (50.2%). Harte is currently enrolled and
playing basketball at Wentworth Institute of Technology in
Boston, MA.
• Carlos Pellot-Rivera (Carmel/Carmel) played in only 13
games for the Vikings last season yet he averaged 18.3 points
per game, shot 67.8% from the field and was named to the
NJCAA Region III All-Tournament Team. Carlos is finishing
up his degree this season and will transfer to a four-year
institution as a student-athlete.
• Pat Lanoue (Hoosic Valley/Troy) finished his career as the
seventh all-time leader in career three-point field goals made
(97). Lanoue is currently enrolled and playing basketball at
Sage College in Troy.
The Vikings return three key veterans to this year’s roster.
Steve Hunt (Tamarac/Wynantskill) was a Mountain Valley
All-Conference selection last season and will look to be an
even bigger impact player during his final year. Anthony
Robustiano (Mohonasen/Rotterdam) is the lone captain on
this year’s Viking team and will play a major role as a leader
from the point guard position this season. Kyle Mafrici
(Colonie/Schenectady) will be expected to step into a role as
a major outside threat in Region III this year.
There also are some key additions to the roster for the
upcoming season. Incoming freshman Herb Tedford
(Colonie/Albany), Kalik Parker (Ragsdale/Jamestown, NC),
Andros Sargios (Voyages Prep/Flushing) and Del Lewis
(Wings Academy/Bronx) will all step into roles as major
contributors to this years team
Improvement will be key to the Vikings success this season.
As long as each player on this year’s roster can make a
commitment to improving individually in practice and in
games, the Vikings will undoubtedly improve as a team and
surely be poised for success.

A message from the
Director of Athletics
Dear Friends:
As Hudson Valley Community College
observes its 56th anniversary, we celebrate
the tradition of Hudson Valley athletics and
look forward to an even brighter future. In
the past five years, 11 of our 16 teams have
won conference and regional titles. During
the last two years alone, an astonishing 20 of
our student-athletes have been named as an
NJCAA All-American.
With the construction of the Joseph L. Bruno
Stadium – clearly the crown jewel of on-campus
baseball facilities – Hudson Valley developed a
new outdoor athletic complex, unmatched on
any two-year college campus across the
country. We are excited about our new home
and recent success, and I am asking for your
support to ensure that the future of Hudson
Valley athletics will mirror the past.

Hudson Valley Community College
Administration
ANDREW J. MATONAK,
Ed.D., President
Andrew J. Matonak, Ed.D., who
has nearly 30 years of experience in higher
education, is the sixth president in Hudson
Valley Community College’s history. He
assumed the presidency on April 18, 2005.
President Matonak, known as
Drew to students, faculty and staff, came to Hudson Valley after
serving as president of Northwest Iowa Community College in
Sheldon, Iowa for three years. He was chosen to lead Hudson
Valley after a year-long presidential search process that actively
involved faculty, staff, alumni, students and community members.
Accomplishments during his tenure at Northwest Iowa
include: the creation and implementation of a Strategic Plan;
implementation of the Computerized Manufacturing Technology
and Advanced Electrical degrees; expansion of the Nursing
program along with a new health addition; the transition to a
new information system for the college; the passage of a levy
vote to generate additional revenue for college operations with
more than 82 percent approval ratings from the community; and
accreditation from both the Higher Learning Commission and
the State of Iowa. He also led a capital gifts campaign and
increased the college’s endowment.
Prior to serving as Northwest Iowa’s president, he was
vice president for student development and an adjunct instructor
at Lakeland Community College, located in Kirtland, Ohio, just
outside of Cleveland.
President Matonak’s career has been shaped by his
decision to attend Butler County Community College in Butler,
P.A. after graduating from high school: he wanted to give other
students the same opportunity that was given to him.
After earning an associate’s degree in liberal arts from
Butler, he received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the
College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio; a master’s degree in
student personnel administration from Michigan State
University in East Lansing, Mich.; and a doctorate in higher
education administration from the University at Houston in
Houston, T.X.
He also has served as dean of student affairs at HorryGeorgetown Technical College in Conway, S.C.; assistant dean of
student affairs at the University of Houston; the admissions and
records coordinator at Lee College in Baytown, T.X.; and
assistant dean of student development and coordinator of career
development and placement at Eastern Iowa Community
College District.
President Matonak and his wife, Karen, have a daughter,
Taylor.
ALEX POPOVICS, Ed.D,
Vice President for Enrollment
Management and Student
Development
Dr. Popovics was appointed to
his current position at Hudson Valley
Community College in April 2006.
He leads the college’s efforts to develop a
comprehensive enrollment management
plan and oversees the college’s student services division. The
division includes admissions, registration, student life,
intercollegiate athletics, disability resources, campus ministry,
counseling, transfer, health, career and employment services. He
also serves as president of the board of the Faculty Student
Association of Hudson Valley Community College, Inc., which
operates auxiliary services, including the bookstore, food service
and day care center.
Dr. Popovics has served as vice president for enrollment
management at several institutions of higher education and as
president of Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D. He earned a
doctorate of education in educational leadership: policy,
planning and administration from Boston University. He is an
avid runner and a Boston Marathon qualifier.
Dr. Popovics and his wife, Joanne, have three daughters,
Kristin, Laura and Sarah. Sarah is a 2008 graduate of Hudson
Valley.
KRISTAN PELLETIER,
Director of Athletics
Kristan Pelletier of Troy is the first
female to be appointed to the position of
director of athletics in the college’s 56-year
history.
Pelletier served as Hudson
Valley’s assistant director of athletics in
2008, also becoming the first female in the
college’s history to hold that post.
As director of athletics, Pelletier oversees 16 NJCAA
Region III varsity sports, intercollegiate activities, coaches, staff
and over 300 student-athletes in the athletic program. Her
responsibilities include administering the athletic program’s
annual budget and supervising all facets of the sports programs.
During Pelletier’s time as assistant athletic director, ten
of Hudson Valley’s current 16 teams qualified for post-season
