May 2011 | Issue #5 | Volume 18 InterBel Talk Interbel Telephone Cooperative Newsletter Get Ready for DSL! “ON JUNE 1ST DIAL–UP GOES DSL AT INTERBEL” As mentioned in our March newsletter and email broadcasts, InterBel will be turning off our dial-up Internet service on June 1, 2011. If you are using dial-up Internet, we hope you will consider moving to DSL (as 95% of our customers have done today). Listed below are some of the common questions for those making the conversion: (as most of our customers do) you’ll receive the first month DSL service free. If you prefer to have InterBel come out and make the installation we can do that in opt of not getting the first month free. 1) Why is InterBel discontinuing dial-up? 4) Is there a contract to sign for DSL? Yes, you will need to sign a 12 month contract for DSL at $19.95/month for Value-DSL (other packages and prices are available as well). You’ll have the option to opt out of the contract if you cancel within the first 30 days. If you cancel outside of the 30 days and within the first 12 months, there is a $99 early termination fee. Dial-up is an old technology, it’s very slow and has become costly to support. With a price difference of only $4/month compared to DSL, it’s hard to justify offering dial-up any more. 2) How difficult is it to install DSL and replace my dial-up? It’s easy and about 95% of our customers do it themselves. The instructions are easy to follow and should only take about 15 minutes to complete. 5) What if I don’t make the switch? If you choose 3) What will I need to do to make the change from dial-up to DSL? Just contact InterBel or come by the office. We’ll provide you with a free DSL modem. If you do your own install not to upgrade from dial-up to DSL and wish to continue using dial-up, you’ll need to locate an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than InterBel. In such cases your InterBel email can be forwarded to your new address for up to 3-months at no charge. Randy Wilson, General Manager Why should I switch from dial-up Internet to Value-DSL?” “7 GREAT REASONS FOR VALUE-DSL” The speed is 8-times faster with Value-DSL. The price difference is only $4 per month. DSL is more reliable and trouble-free where dial-up is more likely to have connection problems. DSL does not busy-out your phone line. You can make calls and be on the Internet at the same time. Its like having a 2nd line in your house free. DSL allows you to connect a Wi-Fi router so you could have wireless Internet in your home. DSL is always on and ready; Just grab your mouse and go. You will enjoy the Internet experience much more by having a faster connection. JUNE 1st Dial-up Internet ends! History Corner Tobacco Plains Journal, 100 years ago Eureka Journal, May 4, 1911 - “Keep Off the Grass” is a notice the city is publishing this week and it is worthy of the attention of all. The parking that has been done on the east side of town reflects credit on the whole community and will benefit the whole town. It not only raises the price and value of the property before which the parking runs but is an attraction to the town in general. Parents should see that their children are kept off the parking and that they do not pull down and break the small trees in the park rows. This is not personal but city property and the city will enforce the ordinance and inflict fines on trespassers. Note: “Parking” apparently refers to planting trees along the streets of east Eureka.
