These children come from broken homes and bad family
situations. While they are in Boysville’s care they receive a
variety of support services that encompass behavioral, clinical,
health and development. The start of the 2014 year began
with the reopening of Ellison Cottage as our new Emergency
Shelter. The cottage had been closed for over several years due
to its aging condition. Ellison Cottage underwent an extensive
restoration process to ensure that it would be safe and be
somewhere the children could call home while they were at
Boysville. Ellison Cottage is now home to those children ages
5-17 and has increased Boysville’s capacity to help these at risk
youth from 12 to 18 children. After recently placing 14-yearold Johnny at Ellison, all of his anxieties seemed to diminish
when he walked in the building. With just a plastic bag holding
all of his possessions, he stated, “I thought Boysville was going
to be a bad place to live.” The increased space has also allowed
the shelter staff to have offices in the cottage to create a more
cohesive work environment and flow of information between
the program and administrative staff.
Thanks to the Charity Ball Association funds, Boysville is able
to ensure that children enter into an inviting, comfortable and
beautiful space where the healing process begins. With more
room to house children, Boysville can continue to take large
sibling groups and provide the services needed to help reunify
them with their families.

Miguel and Raina
CAM
Miguel and Raina, along with six other
family members, came to CAM recently
to get help with a disconnection notice of
their electric bill.
They were also in need of food, clothing and birth
certificates for the younger children. Birth certificates
are required to enroll a child in school. The mother of
the children mentioned how important it was to get
her three youngest children enrolled into school at an
early age. The three children who ranged in age from
3-6 would all be eligible to enroll in public school and
Pre-K for SA.
CAM helps individuals and families in crisis with
food, clothing, financial assistance for rent and
utilities, ID recovery (i.e., a birth certificate to enroll in
school or an ID to begin a new job), prescription drug
assistance, and prayers. A coalition of area churches
and individuals dedicated to helping families in crisis
conducted a Back-to-School Drive for backpacks with
school supplies that were available for the children at
CAM. The families leave with basic necessities and
renewed hope for their future.

Reid
Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas
Rhonda and Joe Calvert
Reid was a month shy of his 5th birthday
when his daddy died suddenly in a car
accident.
His mother was looking for resources to help guide
her family through this new season of loss. She turned
to the Children’s Bereavement Center of South
Texas, where she enrolled him in the “Little Hearts”
8 week program. She saw such progress. As the year
anniversary of her husband’s death approached,
she decided to enroll Reid again as new levels of
questioning and developmental concerns came up
about Daddy.
She remembered that, as Reid would enter the center,
he was quiet and contemplative and each time he
would come out skipping, with a lighter heart. Each
child expresses grief differently; some paint, some
do crafts, others enjoy music or drama, Reid likes to
go to the “Touhey’s Rompus Room” where he can
physically release his nervous energy. Mom also gets
a break in the “adult room,” where she gets much
needed focused time to process her grief as well. The
Center provides them all a safe place to talk, listen,
and know they are understood. Reid’s sister, Gracie,
will be able to benefit from the Bereavement Center
as well when she turns three.

ChildSafe
Two unrelated teens began a high ropes
challenge on a recent adventure therapy
trip, part of the FEAT (Family Enrichment
Adventure Therapy) program at ChildSafe.
The teens began climbing separate forty-foot-tall
poles. The boy worked his way up his pole and
towards the girl’s pole by traversing a cable suspended
up high between them. He walked across the cable
methodically, concentrating on every small step he
took until he reached the girl’s pole. There he found
the girl below shaking and holding tightly to the
pole. His new focus became helping the girl climb
higher. Calmly, he guided the girl up the pole. With
encouraging words and a helping hand, he helped
the girl recognize her power to overcome the fear she
faced at that moment. She made it to the cable next
to him. From the ground, the boy’s mom cried, and
the girl’s family cheered.
Once the pair descended from the cable, the families
spoke of the strength they shared. They used words
like “brave” and “helpful” to describe the teenagers,
and “caring” and “supportive” to describe the family
members on the ground. This is the type of success
celebrated at ChildSafe. Child victims and their
families learn there are others who struggle because of
abuse and neglect and, more importantly, that there
are others out there who are trustworthy and willing
to help them reach their goals.

Acari
Divine Redeemer Presbyterian Church
Multi-level Educational Youth Outreach (MEYO)
Acari is a young woman who has been
involved with the MEYO House of Teens
program since the 6th grade. She came
into the program as a youth from a
single parent household who struggled
with behavioral issues.
Karen Norman Mueller
President 2003
She spent her middle school years alternating between
public and alternative schools. Her participation in
House of Teens gave her the knowledge and skills for
a personal transformation to take place, as evidenced by
Acari’s improved behavior. Over several years of continued
involvement, Acari developed into an active leader and
strong role model in her community, school and the
House of Teens. This past spring, Acari’s hard work and
determination paid off as she graduated in the top 11%
of her high school class! Through the support of MEYO
and collaboration with College Vista, Acari was recently
accepted at her top choice of universities. After completing
her undergraduate degree, she plans to pursue higher
education as a means of achieving her dream of becoming
a cardiologist.
Divine Redeemer Presbyterian Church’s MEYO program
empowers its participants through an environment
that encourages Personal Development, Service to the
Community, Solid Character Formation, and a Dedication
to Post-High School Learning. After-school programs
include Peace Pals for first through fifth grade students and
House of Teens for sixth through twelfth graders. MEYO is
also associated with the Rivera Scholarship Fund.

For me, the museum carries special meaning.
My grandfather, Oscar Ehrenberg, was a
survivor of the Holocaust. He was an important
role model for me because he was kind,
charitable and resilient in spite of experiencing
the worst atrocity in modern history. He was
one of the lead individuals in the creation of
the Museum and one of the largest original
donors. Learning through history so that we
do not repeat our past mistakes is one of the
primary lessons we learn from the Museum, and
it is a great legacy from my grandfather for the
city of San Antonio. The Museum promotes
understanding, remembrance and education
and serves as a reminder that we must all strive
to live together in peace and harmony.

San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind
Blind Children’s Education Program
Five year old Danny and Marty are fraternal
twins and best friends. You may notice the
difference in their hair and skin tones—they call
themselves salt and pepper. Born with albinism,
Danny has little or no pigment in his eyes, skin,
or hair. When you meet him, he’ll tell you right
away, “I’m legally blind.”
Jill Vassar
Database Management Chairman
Jo Lynne Meador
Marty, born one minute older, is very protective of Danny.
When they are outside playing and he hears a car coming,
Marty immediately makes sure that Danny is safe.
The Blind Children’s Education Program, funded by The Charity
Ball Association, has meant a lot to the Kazala family. Since its
inception in October 2013, more than 100 children have been
served in San Antonio. Participating in group outings to the
Zoo, the Beeping Easter Egg Hunt, Family Fun Pizza Night
and the upcoming Braille and assistive technology programs
has introduced Danny to other children that have severe vision
issues like him. Not the only “cane” walker in the group, Danny
has named his cane “Luke Skywalker” because it helps him see.
Children who have severe vision impairment face unique
challenges and require assistive technology and specialized
support and training in order to be successful in school. Without
the proper support and assistance, many intelligent and capable
blind children may fall behind in school or even be assigned
to special education classes simply because of their physical
challenges. The program ensures children like Daniel will have
the opportunity to gain the skills and training necessary to
achieve independence and success in both school and life.

opportunity to have an independent, fulfilled life. The
Unicorn Center provides social as well as employment
opportunities to people with disabilities within our
San Antonio community.

His favorite singer is Miley Cyrus, because as he
poignantly describes, one of her songs inspired him
when he was feeling low. “There’s always gonna be
another mountain. I’m always gonna wanna make it
move. Always gonna be an uphill battle. Sometimes
I’m gonna have to lose. Ain’t about how fast I get
there. Ain’t about what’s waitin’ on the other side. It’s
the climb.”

Ashlee
San Antonio Can High School
Jill Smith
Ashlee spent her childhood growing up in
Laredo, Texas with her mother and siblings.
Her family moved from rental home to rental
home and she attended several schools. Due
to a lack of resources the family became very
transient.
By the time Ashlee was in high school she had fallen behind
due to missing school, taking care of her younger siblings and
lack of support at the schools she attended. Ashlee’s father
encouraged her to move to San Antonio for school, stability and
future opportunities. They heard about San Antonio Can High
School, which welcomes students throughout the school year,
offers smaller classes, provides individual attention and with
hard work, you could catch up and graduate in a reasonable
time. In 2010, Ashlee moved and began her new life.
Ashlee met with her student advisor and enrolled at San
Antonio Can High School without knowing anyone there,
but that quickly changed. A thoughtful and outgoing teen, she
blossomed and became a friend to all who met her. She enjoyed
attending school, felt comfortable and enjoyed the support she
received from her advisor and teachers, “I was surprised that
they cared and noticed. They called you if you weren’t at school
and they helped if you needed extra help with course work,”
she said.

She tried out for and made the volleyball team. Ultimately,
Ashlee excelled at school and is excelling at a stable life. She has
a part-time job that she has maintained for more than a year,
and is excited about her future as a high school graduate.

Baby from
Healy-Murphy Center
John has been enrolled at the YWCA Child
Development Center since October of 2012.
He came into the center as a very shy child who
kept to himself most of the time. He would not
socialize with the other children in his class and
would not eat during meal times.
To help raise John’s confidence, his teacher would create
special activities for him so that he could gain confidence
in himself and want to socialize with his classmates. As he
began to interact with other children, the teachers noticed
that he was not as verbal as the other children. Using the
Ages and Stages Questionnaire, John’s teacher noticed
that he was not at the developmental point he should have
been at for his age.
The teachers knew that their daily curriculum and activities
would need to be changed to help John get to the point
where he needed to be. When John was ready to transition
to the next class, the teacher continued to help him with
his speech delay by using flash cards and numerous verbal
cues throughout the day. After several months John was
re-assessed, and he showed improvement with not only
his cognitive development but with his social/emotional
development as well.
Today John is outgoing and very social in his class. He has
continued to show improvement with his language skills,
and the teachers continue to help him every day that he
is here at the center. The teachers continuously look for
ways to help not only John but the other children in the
center as well.
