“Building a Sound Legacy”
MLMM Board Announces New Endowment Campaign
Fred Bursch
Over the last several years the museum has
undertaken a number of capital projects,
including the building of the original museum,
the expansion into the north gallery and, most
recently, phase 1 of the Maritime Gardens
project. These projects have been funded with
generous donations from our members and
interested parties.
These projects require ongoing support in order to maintain
the quality buildings, exhibits and gardens. Memberships and
admissions alone are not sufficient. If we had an endowment
fund, earnings from an endowment could be used to supplement
our annual income to support the Museum and Gardens.
The Board of the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum recently
received a challenge from the Mammel Foundation. If the
museum can retire its debt, build an endowment for the future,
and operate the museum in a fiscally sound manner the museum
will receive a private collection of boats valued in excess of
$600,000. What a gift and what an opportunity!
Terry Quist Joins
MLMM Board
Terry Quist
Terry was born and raised in
Alexandria, MN. He graduated from
Jefferson High School in 1971.
He attended Concordia College in
Moorhead, MN and graduated with
a degree in social studies. He taught
in several school districts in North
Dakota and Minnesota.
In 1983, he began his administrative work at Apple Valley
High School. After completing graduate work in educational
administration, he and his spouse, Sue, moved back to
Alexandria where he served as curriculum director for
the Alexandria Public Schools. Their children, Cally and
Thomas graduated from Jefferson High School in 2007
and 2009. In 2006, he was selected to be Superintendent
of Schools in Alexandria. He retired in 2012. He has
served on boards for Douglas County Library, Habitat for
Humanity, United Way and Alexandria Area Economic
Development Commission.

The Museum Board has accepted this generous challenge and
has now undertaken what we are calling the “Building a Sound
Legacy” campaign. Chaired by Jim Eidsvold, with assistance
from the board members, we hope to meet the goals established
in the challenge. The great news is that we have already
received a number of gifts and pledges and our board is 100%
behind this campaign, supporting it with their efforts and personal
contributions. We are well on our way to meeting the goals laid
out in the challenge. We hope to retire all debt within the next
year and annual operations are trending positive.
Would you like to know how you can participate? We would
be happy to visit with you about gifts of any size, including gifts
of appreciated assets (such as stocks) or leaving a bequest in
your will. Your gift could help insure what AAA calls “a gem of
Minnesota” remains vibrant and alive well into the future.
Will you help?

Maritime Stories
The Split Rock Lighthouse is a Lake
Superior National Landmark and one of
the most photographed lighthouses in the
USA. Mike Roberts was the keeper of
the lighthouse when it was deactivated
in 1969. He joined the US Coast Guard
and was part of some search and rescue
adventures. He will talk about the sinking
of the Edmund Fitzgerald
and his interview of Dennis
Hale, the sole survivor
of the Daniel J. Morrell
shipwreck on Lake Huron.

Get to know ...
“Boat”Erickson!
Erick G. “Boat” Erickson was born
in Sweden on July 19, 1866 and
became an American when his
parents emigrated in 1868. The
family lived on Lake Ida, outside of
Alexandria. At age 17, Erick decided
to build a boat for fishing. Neighbors
soon started asking Erick if he could
build boats for them, also. With his
background in woodworking, he
began making boats for resale in 1885. He soon became known
as “Boat Erick.”
In the late 1890s he moved his small operation into the city of
Alexandria, and built a small shop. By 1914, Erickson’s boat
shop covered 7,000 sq. ft. of floor space. Most of the boats
were sold within a small radius of Alexandria; however, some
went as far as Kansas City, and Chicago. The earliest boats
were built with lapstrake hulls. Sometime in the early days of
Alexandria Boat Works, the name “Lady of the Lakes” was
attached to their boats, the name stuck, and was used as the
trade name for their boats.
Numerous US patents were granted to Erickson, many of which
you can see at the Maritime Museum. His patents included
the underslung boat trailer in 1925, boat anchor, his stripbuilt method of boat construction, self-locking oarlock, and an
aquaplane surfboard, which is also displayed in museum.
Erick died on January 7, 1936, at the age of 69.

NEW SUPPORT
Gardens Gains Another Supporter!
General Construction Services, a nationwide company
specializing in water tower construction, repair and
removal, has offered their support to the Gardens Project.
For nearly 30 years, the company’s owner, David C.
Webb, has successfully worked with many cities and
businesses.
Dave recently delivered industrialized-sized accent
pieces to be used in the gardens. Very large, handmade
turnbuckles will be sandblasted, powder-coated and
installed in the gardens. General Construction Services
has offered to assist with any welding or heavy metal
construction.
David and Museum Director Bruce Olson are longtime
friends. “When Bruce calls, D.C. Webb will be there!” said
Webb. “Together we have enjoyed hot air ballooning and
skydiving in a previous life.”
Featured Exhibit
The Brush & Palette Club began in 1965 when a local group
of artists, who wanted to be with other, like-minded people,
decided to form a club. The club meets weekly on Tuesdays at
the United Methodist Church.
Many professional artists have been invited to teach workshops
over the course of 48 years. They use different media, such as
acrylic, oil, watercolor, journaling, bookmaking, mixed media,
pastels, paper collage and portraiture.
In an effort to reach out to the community, the club has been
involved in many projects, such as face painting at various
events, sponsoring youth workshops and painting memory
boxes for the hospital auxiliary. Members also donate baskets of
original greeting cards to be auctioned off at the DCHA annual
ball. The club recently contributed art work that was displayed
at the Jefferson Community Concert, and they regularly hang
exhibits at the Douglas County Library.
The MLMM is happy to welcome the Brush & Palette Club to the
museum this summer!
At a special, members-only event on May 30, artist
Myron Sahlberg, recently retired from Alexandria
Technical & Community College, demonstrated
the creative process of portraiture by immortalizing
MLMM Member Jim Eidsvold.

Minnesota Lakes Classic Boat Show
July 12-13, 2013
Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center,
Alexandria, Minnesota
Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum and The Motoring Journal are
pleased to announce “Speed Reunion” as the newest addition to the
Minnesota Lakes Classic Boat Show. In its 26th year, the Minnesota
Lakes Classic Boat Show has established itself as the Upper Midwest’s
premier vintage boating event. The classic boat and car hobby holds
a strong bond in style, workmanship and enthusiasts. Arrowwood
Resort’s beautiful lakeside front lawn presents a great opportunity
to display automobiles along with the watercraft. We first brought in
European automobiles in 2012, and it proved to be a perfect match.
For 2013 we are featuring Falls Flyer boats and Porsche cars. There
will be many other makes and models of watercraft and automobiles
on display as well. The Speed Reunion is a two-day event beginning on
Friday, July 12 with the “Tour de’ Lakes” driving tour, winery
tour and VIP boat museum tour with Bruce Olson, MLMM
Director, followed by a “wine and cheese” in the Maritime
Gardens. Our Friday activities end at Arrowwood Resort
with the Captains and Pilots Party, where registrants dine
surrounded by the boats and cars. We will also offer boat
rides Friday evening for those showing an automobile or
boat on Saturday. All show cars are treated to a secure
indoor parking and detailing area Thursday and Friday
night.
The event continues Saturday with the land and on-water
display of boats and the vintage and exotic European
vehicles shown lakeside on Arrowwood’s beautiful front
lawn. Saturday includes educational briefings on featured
cars, boat rides, drive-bys and much more. This is a great
family venue, with the Arrowwood Deck Bar, swimming
pool, golf, water park and so much to do just steps from the show area.
Boat and car owners are encouraged to get registered ASAP! The event
is filling and lodging is filling up quickly! Hotel and food are available at
discounted rates.

museum, he has helped to build the Minnesouri Angling Club porch, designing,
building, finishing and installing the boathouse at the reception desk; assisting
in hanging many of the boats; and assembling boats for displays. Outside in the
gardens, Darin has helped construct gazebos, cleaned and maintained the garden
streams, helped install and take
down the event stage canopies
and even completely restored
a golf cart to be used as a
