Canada’s national shrine of the Canadian Jesuit Martyrs celebrates its 90th anniversary of the opening of the present church on the hill in 2016. It is Canada’s only national shrine outside of Quebec. “The practice of pilgrimage has a special place in the Holy Year, because it represents the journey each of us makes in this life. Life itself is a pilgrimage, and the human being is a viator, a pilgrim traveling along the road, making his way to the desired destination. Similarly, to reach the Holy Door in Rome or in any other place in the world, everyone, each according to his or her ability, will have to make a pilgrimage. This will be a sign that mercy is also a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice. May pilgrimage be an impetus to conversion: by crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to embrace God’s mercy and dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us.” Pope Francis, Jubilee Year of Mercy Registration and full details of the day’s events will be available in the next few weeks. Join others from across our Diocese on this day of pilgrimage. A special Thank You from the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul! Your response to the recent SSVP Bundle Sunday request for clothing and household items was very generous and very much appreciated! Many of these items are already in the SSVP stores ready to be given to our friends in need in our community. Thank you very much for your continued generosity! Could you spare one hour or less to bring Holy Communion to one homebound neighbour in your area of the city on your way home from Mass on Sunday, or another day of the week? Training is provided, and there is a short Liturgy to follow. The parish will pay for the police check required by the Diocese. Homebound parishioners appreciate having the Eucharist brought to them, and your short visit will let them know the parish community has not forgotten them. If you can assist with this vital Ministry, please contact the parish office, 519.432.3475 and someone will contact you. Many thanks! Pilgrimage With Us! We are planning a pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Rosary Shrine near Merlin on Saturday, July 2nd. This is a Shrine Day on the theme of Holy Mary, Handmaid of the Lord. Mass starts at 11:00am and a Rosary procession at 1:30pm. Please bring your lunch. All parishioners are welcome to join us; young adults please RSVP via e-mail or Facebook. We meet for approximately 2 hours every 3 months. If you are interested in joining us, or know of someone who would be able to contribute to this growing Ministry, please contact the parish office. Year of Mercy Pilgrimages This week we welcome St. George Parish Schools’ Faith in Action Team (London) and St. Mary Parish, Dearborn Heights, MI Please keep these pilgrims in your prayers. Good News from the Refugee Committee After a long period of waiting and preparation, our Parish sponsored refugees arrived at Toronto Airport on Tuesday, June 7th after a long, exhausting journey. Two members of the refugee committee, along with an interpreter, were there to welcome them (with the assistance of the L’Arche community, who donated a large van and an Arabic speaking driver) to their warm, comfortable new home here in London. Thanks to the generosity of many, we are able to provide a safe home to this family who have fled war and conflict. It is with joy that we welcome father and mother, Fouad and Khawje Ghazal, and their daughters: Itaf, 13yrs; Hayat, 11yrs; Amira, 8yrs; Chahed, 5yrs; and Rimas, 2yrs. Let us all pray for a safe and uneventful journey for this courageous family, who are embarking on a new life in our community. Pilgrimage Monday, August 15th 2016 The Legion is sponsoring a pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Holy Rosary in Merlin, Ontario, to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Cost is $25 per person. For more details or to sign up, please contact Cora Vazansky at 519.680.5087. Reserve your seat early, and don’t be left out! Priests’ Pension Collection for Retired Priests June 19, 2016 Retired priests of the Diocese of London receive a monthly pension from the St. John the Evangelist Priest Pension Fund Society. Similar to the challenges that face most pension funds, there are a greater number of retired priests today who are living longer lives than was anticipated just a few decades ago. As the number of retired priest’s increases, the pension fund needs to grow to meet future needs. The Priests’ Pension Collection allows each of us to show our gratitude and support for priests who have faithfully served our parishes and cared for us and our spiritual needs. Prayerfully reflect this week on how you can best respond in support of the needs of our retired priests. Special Collection envelopes for the Priest Pension Fund are available. Please return the envelope in the collection basket or drop it off at the parish office. I t’s not too late to join Pope Francis in his specific prayers for June. He suggests two prayer intentions each month for our reflection. This month he invites us to consider 1. Human solidarity: That the aged, marginalized and those who have no one, may find, even in the huge cities of the world, opportunities for encounter and solidarity. 2. Seminarians & Novices: That seminarians and men and women entering religious life may have mentors who live the joy of the Gospel and prepare them wisely for their mission. From the writings of Thomas Merton comes the following food for thought: “Every moment and event of every person’s life plants something in the soul. For just as the wind carries thousands of seeds, so each moment brings with it seeds of spiritual vitality that come to rest in the minds and wills of people. Most of these seeds perish because we are not prepared to receive them: for such seeds as these cannot spring up anywhere except in the good soil of freedom, spontaneity, and love.” Hospitality is an important virtue in the Gospels. Jesus’ hospitality to sinners and prostitutes was criticized by the religious establishment ("This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."). Simon, the Pharisee, seems to offer hospitality to Jesus, but it is only a superficial welcome. Even though Jesus was a guest in Simon’s home for a meal, he hosted the woman. Again, he did what he was constantly blamed for doing – welcoming sinners, which is what he does for us every time we celebrate the Eucharist. If we are honest, we enter the Cathedral each Sunday or Saturday evening conscious of our past failures and sins. Still, we have been invited by the Lord to dine in his house. Here we receive forgiveness and good food to build us up and strengthen us as His disciples. Following each Mass is always a good time to ask myself: Can I name a concrete situation when I have received forgiveness? In what concrete situation (actually name the person(s)) do I now need to offer forgiveness?
