Facility Rental Info
Looking for a hall to hold your meeting, shower, party or special
event? Teifer, Haas, Cultural Center and Westfield Center are
available for private rentals throughout the year. Call the Recreation Office for reservations, fees and availability on Teifer, Haas
and Cultural Center at 675-7300. For Westfield, call 675-0063.
Message Center
What’s up? Check out our Digital Message Center located in
front of the Kennedy Recreation Center for information on upcoming events. Trenton groups and organizations can submit a
request to have their city event posted on the marquee. Requests
are limited to 4 postings per group within a calendar year and
must be submitted 2 weeks prior to listing. Additional requests
may be submitted for a $25 fee per message. Approved postings
will be made on a first request basis. No personal messages will
be accepted. Request forms available at the Recreation Office.

The City Clerk’s Office can process your passport. You will need
2 Passport Pictures (identical 2" x 2"), check or money order
payable to the U.S. Department of State and picture I.D. Children under the age of 16 must have both parents or child’s legal
guardian (s) present. Expediting service requires an additional

If emergency events result in enough residents unable to stay in
their homes, shelters will be open and managed by the city and
organizations in accordance with the City’s Emergency Operations Plan. Location and transportation option notification will
be done primarily by radio, TV, cable TV, and/or city employees.
Let someone know your plans and bring items such as glasses,
medicines, and quiet games for children. All workers and visitors
are welcome.
Bicycle Helmets for Sale
Safety first! Before you take that bike ride, stop by the Recreation Center during business hours and purchase a bicycle
helmet for only $10. Choose your style and we’ll make sure it’s
properly fitted. Be smart and play it safe, wear a helmet.
Visit the Historical Victorian-style home built in 1881 by John
and Sarah Moore. The museum is decorated in the Victorian
period and contains information on the history of Trenton and
artifacts of the area. The museum is open every Saturday from
1-4 p.m. except January and August. In December, the museum
is beautifully decorated for the holiday season. To arrange special tours, call 675-2130.
Recreation Vehicle Storage
Thanks to a reciprocal agreement between Trenton and Woodhaven, Trenton residents can now utilize Woodhaven’s Recreation Vehicle Storage facility at resident rates. Space limited. For

On-line registration is here! You can now register for
most recreation programs at trentonmi.org and follow the registration link. As always, you may register
in person at the Recreation Office located at Trenton
City Hall except where noted. We are happy to serve
you during business hours, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5
p.m. Registration dates are clearly defined in the program
description. We accept Visa, Master Card, and Discover
credit and debit cards for most transactions. Please note:
Due to the popularity of some programs and events, this
registration policy may be modified.
Refund Policy
Participants wishing to withdraw from a program must
request a refund prior to the beginning of the second
class. Refunds will not be paid in cash and will take 3 to 4
weeks to process. No refunds or reduction in fees will be
given for classes missed by participant.
Cancellation Policy
Trenton Parks and Recreation reserves the right to cancel
any activity due to low enrollment. Every effort will be
made to schedule a make-up class if class is cancelled
due to inclement weather or causes beyond our control.
However, if that is not possible, no partial refund will be
provided. If the Trenton Public Schools are closed due
to weather conditions or mechanical difficulties, programs scheduled in a school facility are cancelled.

Elizabeth Park is the site of the annual Nursery School Olympics on June 2
at 10:30 a.m. This non-competitive event will offer activities such as kiddy
basketball, running long jump and obstacle course, along with diaper derby
and toddler trot. Children under 5 and their parents are welcome. Register
on site. Bring a big wheel or bike!
Haven’t visited Elizabeth Park’s Skate Park? You’re in for a treat. Grab your
board and head to Elizabeth Park on Saturday, June 5 at 1 p.m. There will
be demos, contests, music and refreshments. It’s a great way to check out
the skate park. Co-sponsored by Anime to Skateboards store in Southgate.
Andy Ross Charity Motorcycle Ride
The 10th annual Andy Ross Motorcycle Ride is set for Saturday, June 26
at Elizabeth Park. Riders are asked to arrive at the Park by 11:00 a.m., with
the Ride taking off at Noon. For info and to download an entry form visit

4th of July Fireworks!
Bring your family and friends to Rotary Park and celebrate America’s Birthday with Fireworks on Sunday, July 4th! Enjoy a patriotic concert by the
Downriver Community Band prior to the fiery show beginning at 8 p.m.
Roar on the River
Catch the fun at the PNC Roar on the River on July 23, 24, 25 at Elizabeth
Park. The weekend kicks off with “A Taste of the Races” Friday, July 23,
from 6-9 p.m. followed by music of Fifty Amp Fuse. Along with the worldclass power boat racing Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25, the Rock the
River concert takes place Saturday evening and the Roar in the Park classic
car show will be held Sunday. Sponsored by PNC Bank (formerly National
City) and organized by Trenton Rotary, in cooperation with Wayne County

Jazz on the River
Sounds of cool jazz can be heard in Elizabeth Park on July 31 and August 1
from noon-9 p.m. Wayne County Parks will sponsor the annual Jazz on the
River weekend event, featuring well-known local and national jazz artists.
The scenic Detroit River will provide a beautiful background for the event.

Festival is Mid-Summer Highlight!

August City Garage Sale
Shed those unwanted items and make a profit. On August 14 & 15 from 8
a.m.-4 p.m., throngs of treasure hunters will invade Trenton seeking those
special finds. The deadline to register your sale is Friday, August 6. Have
nothing to sell? Join the treasure hunt. Purchase maps at City Hall or

Autumn Perennial Exchange
On Saturday, September 25 from 10 a.m.-noon, gardeners can swap
their surplus plants with fellow gardeners at Trenton’s Annual Perennial
Plant Exchange. The ground rules are simple, bring the plants you want
to trade clearly marked in plastic bags or pots. Arrive at 10 a.m. sharp!
Register on site and start exchanging, trading or bartering and make your
best deal! Several master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.

Boo Ball A Monster Mash Costume Dance Party
Saturday, October 30, 2010
Boo-gie your Boo-ty and come rock with us. There will be a Spooktacular
Halloween Costume Contest, ghostly games, music and treats! Held at the
Westfield Center from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Ages 2 and up.

History will be illuminated as ghosts of Downriver come alive! Hear
about our city’s haunts with stories by firelight while enjoying succulent fall
favors. It’s free at the Cultural Center See page 13 for more info.
Time to get carving! We, once again, are challenging the community to
break a record for the most lit jack-o-lanterns in one place on Saturday,
October 23. DTE will donate $1 for every lit pumpkin we have on site and
proceeds will go to First Step Domestic Violence Center. All organizations,
scout troops, churches, schools and businesses are asked to carve pumpkins
and bring them to the Cultural Center beginning at 3 p.m. DTE COMMUNITY NITE LITE begins at 7 p.m. with official count announced at 8 p.m.
Taste of Trenton and Beyond
The Taste of Trenton has returned to Elizabeth Park as part of the
Somewhere in Time Festival on Sunday, September 19 from noon - 5 p.m.
With the scenic Detroit River as a backdrop, visitors can enjoy an oldfashioned outdoor picnic by sampling the delicious cuisine prepared by the
area’s finest restaurateurs. Great food, great company!

Turn back the hands of time on Sunday, September 19 from 11
a.m.-5 p.m. in historic Elizabeth Park and recapture the essence of
Elizabeth Park, as it was in the early 1900’s, through old time entertainment, old fashioned games, arts and crafts, bake sale, children’s area
and more. Reminisce about an era gone by as you cruise the Detroit
River aboard the “Diamond Belle” Riverboat. Stroll down memory
lane while taking a leisurely walk through automotive time featuring antique and classic cars dating back to the Model T. Come and celebrate
this carefree, bygone era. It’s a history lesson worth living. Sponsored

Christmas Parade
Saturday, December 4
The Trenton Civic Commission and Parks and Recreation, have
once again teamed up to kick-off the holiday season in a big way
with the annual “Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony.” Stroll downtown and welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus to
Trenton. The downtown streets will be all aglow with hand-held
candles illuminating the parade route. It’ll be an evening of oldfashioned holiday fun! The Parade begins at 6 p.m. Following the
Tree Lighting Ceremony, all are invited to Trenton City Hall for the
Parade afterglow and awards. For info call 675-7300.
Holiday Home Decorating Contest
Trenton residents are invited to enter their homes in this annual event. Decorating must be done by the residents of the home. Complete rules and entry
forms are available at the Commission’s office 675-1162. Entry deadline is
Friday, December 10, 2010. Judging will take place December 13-17. Certificates for first, second, third and fourth place will be awarded by DTE Energy
to all winners. Sponsored by Trenton City Beautiful Commission.
Luminary and Ornament Sale
Saturday, December 4
The City Beautiful Commission will hold their annual sale from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
at City Hall. Light up your walkways on Christmas Eve with luminaries. Expand your Trenton ornament collection by purchasing this year’s 17th edition
ornament. Ornaments and luminaries will also be available at the Commission’s office.

Don’t miss this Trenton holiday tradition. Over 25 decorated Christmas trees
will adorn the inside of the Victorian Farmhouse. Come and warm your
heart with holiday spirit and good cheer. There will be craft & bake sales,
and Victorian Christmas Teas. The event will close on December 23 with
“Twas the Night Before Christmas Eve” where visitors can enjoy caroling,
chestnuts roasting and can warm their toes around a bonfire. The Farmhouse

Memorial Day Parade 2010

This instructional program will emphasize developing the fundamentals of baseball, while maintaining a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Children will benefit through exercise and teamwork
development. The program will meet from 10-11 a.m. Tuesdays

baseball gloves and tennis shoes. Open to children entering

Special Needs Activities Program
For six, fun-filled weeks we’re on the move with field trips every weekday for

Flag Football & Cheerleading
Join the Trenton NFL Youth Flag Football League! This program
provides classmates the opportunity to play flag football together on
school teams while competing against other schools in the Trenton,

5 vs. 5 where each team has no more then 10 players to maximize
playing time. Teams will practice once during the week while games
will be played on Sunday afternoons on the turf field at Woodhaven
High School! All players will receive an official reversible NFL
jersey and cheerleaders will also receive a uniform to keep. This
program is designed for boys and girls 4 – 15 years of age. The
eligibility requirement is for the child to be 4 years old by June 1st,

The 2010 Downriver Senior Olympics will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year in the City of Allen Park during the week of August
2nd through August 6th. Opening ceremonies will be held at Champagne Park in Allen Park on Monday, August 2nd. Come celebrate
with us and experience the fun, fellowship, and friendly competitions

Senior Golf League
How about a round of golf! If you’re interested in playing in a Senior
Golf League, join our Tuesday league played at the Wesburn Golf
Course every Tuesday morning starting in May. A $25 registration
fee includes end of season banquet and awards. Weekly greens fees
are additional. Returning golfers are given the opportunity to register
first. Contact the Westfield Senior Office after April 1 for new golfer
registration information.
Drop-in Skating
Calling all Seniors! Don’t lose your edge on the ice. Come and skate
with us this season at the Kennedy Recreation Center! Drop-in skating sessions will be offered for Seniors, ages 55 and up, on Tuesdays
and Thursdays at 11 a.m. year-round. It’s free to Trenton residents.

Drop-in Horseshoes
Horseshoes anyone? Men and Women 50 years and older are invited

‘AARP’ Tax Assistance
During Income Tax season, trained volunteers from ‘AARP’
are available to help seniors 60 years and older prepare their
tax returns. There is no charge for this service, but appointments are required. ‘AARP’ is a non-profit, non-partisan membership organization for people 50 years and older. Persons
over the age of 60 will be given priority appointments for the

Loan Closet
Do you have a need for crutches, walkers or wheelchairs? The
City of Trenton provides such medical equipment on a loan
basis to those who are in need. A nominal deposit and proof

Senior Transportation
A
Whether it’s a trip to the doctor or hospital, running errands to the
bank or grocery store, Trenton Transportation, a taxi shuttle service
for Trenton residents 60 years of age or older, will take you there!
Trenton Seniors who are interested in using the shuttle service must
register in advance at the Westfield Center Office located at 2700
Westfield. The service area includes Trenton, and neighboring communities bounded by Vreeland to the South, Northline Road to the
North, Telegraph to the West, and West Jefferson to the East. The
service is available Monday – Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost
to use the shuttle service is $2.00 each way, for every drop-off. When
traveling outside the service area, an additional charge of $1.50 per
mile will be assessed. Fees will be collected at the time of pick-up.
(This service excludes trips to the airport, bus, or train stations.) For

The ‘Loop’ Shuttle Bus
Attention Trenton Seniors! Each Monday and Wednesday, the city’s
shuttle bus will pick up Trenton Seniors and bring them to Westfield
to participate in Senior programs. The shuttle will make a ‘loop’
around town with stops at the Westfield Center, Kennedy Recreation
Center, Library, and Trafford Square. Free shuttles to Meijer and Super K-Mart on Mondays and Southland Mall on Wednesdays are also
offered. The shuttle is free and serves Trenton Seniors only. Please

option. The program requires transportation requests be scheduled

Adult Social Clubs
Looking to meet new friends? We’ve got the
place for you! For daytime activities and fellowship, join the Pleasant Hours, Heritage or New
Horizon social clubs and keep yourself young
at heart. Our clubs meet Mondays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays in the early afternoon, depending on the group. Each club offers a wide
range of activities including light luncheons,
bingo, special events, and much more! There
is something for everyone. Pleasant Hours and
the Heritage club now accept non-residents.
The New Horizon club is limited to Trenton
residents only. Each club has nominal yearly
membership fees, with weekly dues collected

Friendship Dance Club
“I could have danced all night!” That’s the

active bunch kicks up their heels on the dance

Computer Lab
Eating a balanced diet is essential for good health. Wayne County Office of Nutrition
Services, in conjunction with Senior Alliance and volunteers from Trenton Senior Program,
offer a nutrition program for persons 60 years of age or older. All seniors, regardless of
income, can take advantage of this service. The nutrition site is located at the Church
of Christ, 2650 Grange, Trenton. Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m.
Call 676-1848, 24 hours in advance for a reservation. A $2.25 donation is requested. Hot
lunches and emergency frozen meals are also available to qualified homebound seniors. To
register for that service, please call 1-800-851-1454. Volunteers are always needed to help
pack lunches or to deliver meals, call 675-0063.

Lifeguarding Instruction
WANTED! Energetic, responsible, dedicated swimmers interested in Lifeguarding. This course
will teach the basic skills necessary for pool safety and water rescue. Persons registering must be
15 years old and pass a comprehensive swim test. Upon completion of the course, students must
show proficiency in both written and practical testing. First aid and CPR will also be taught.
Classes held Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m. at Arthurs cafeteria and pool.

Trenton Swim Club
If you can swim one length of a 25-yard pool, and are ages 6-18, the Trenton Swim Club wants
you! This program will introduce swimmers to all 4 competitive strokes and provide an atmosphere to use the skills that they have learned at swim meets held on Saturdays and Sundays
throughout the season. Swimmers will learn self-discipline, time management and organization skills while developing self-confidence. The season runs mid-September through March.
Practices are held at the High School or Arthurs Middle School Pool, Monday-Friday, 5:45-7:30

Rules and Regulations
For your safety and the safety of others, the following rules and regulations
have been established in accordance with State Pool Regulations. Failure to
comply or to follow staff directives will result in disciplinary action and or
removal from the facility. The City reserves the right to rule on any matter not
specifically stated in the rules & regulations.
• All swimmers must have a wristband issued by the Aquatic Center staff
prior to entering the pool.
• Capacity is limited to 1,000 patrons. The Aquatic Center may be closed
at the Supervisor’s or Headguard’s discretion due to inclement weather,
capacity or unusual circumstances.
• No alcoholic beverages or drugs, or persons under the influence of
alcoholic beverages or drugs, smoking and all other tobacco products are
permitted.
• Patrons may NOT bring any food (including gum) or beverages (including
water bottles) on the pool deck.
• Patrons may purchase food & beverage at the Aquatic Center Concession
Stand and may only consume those items inside the designated concession
area. For safety reasons, NO GLASS containers food or beverages are
allowed. Food brought from home may be consumed in the designated
picnic area only.
• For the safety of all patrons, backpacks, duffel bags & personal coolers
may NOT be brought onto the pool deck. These items may be left in lockers in the locker rooms and inside the Kennedy Recreation Center.
• Running on pool deck and horseplay are not permitted.
• All swimmers must take a shower before entering the pool. Lined bathing suits are required. Cut-offs & colored t-shirts may not be worn. Swim
pants are required for swimmers that are not toilet trained. Only aqua
socks may be worn in the pool. Sunscreen lotion may be worn, oil based
products are not permissible.
• Face masks, swim fins, snorkels, flotation toys and water wings are not
permitted. Life jackets are available to patrons of the facility and inner
tubes are available for rent at the cashier booth. Personal flotation devices
that are Coast Guard approved (Type II and Type III) may be brought
in the facility once it has been inspected by the Headguard on duty. Life
jackets are not permitted on the slide.
• Radios & TVs are not permitted on the pool deck.
• Swimming is only permitted when lifeguards are on duty. Diving is only
permitted off of the diving boards.
• During “BREAK” (10 minutes, 15 minutes if heat index is 90˚ or above)
adults only are allowed in the pool.
• Private swimming lessons are not permitted during open swimming.
• Only lifeguards are permitted on the guard stands.
• The Kennedy Recreation Center is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Who needs to vacation at a resort pool when you can
spend the day at the Kennedy Outdoor Aquatic Center,
right in your own town! It opens with a splash on Saturday,
May 29. This 13,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility offers many attractions to keep visitors swimming! Concession stand, lounge chairs and large shade umbrellas add
to the fun! A number of activities, both in and out of the
water, will be offered. It’s also a great place to relax near
the pool and socialize with friends. A complete listing of
events will be available poolside this summer. Don’t forget
the sunscreen.

Dog Days of Summer Swim
The Kennedy Pool has officially “Gone to the Dogs,” for one day
that is! On Saturday, September 11, 2010, the Kennedy Aquatic
Center will open its doors again to man’s best friend. Bring your
favorite four-legged pal for a dip in the pool from noon-3 p.m.
There will be pet contests, treats and more! Pet friendly vendors
will be on hand beginning at 11 a.m. to share their canine wares.
So come early! Dogs must be licensed and vaccinated and owners
must be prepared for clean-up duty.

Photo I.D. is required to obtain resident rates. Resident Photo

Are you interested in training hard or qualifying for your
high school or college conference finals? If you can answer
yes, you need to look no further than the Trenton Swim
Club Development Training Program. Swimmers will have
the opportunity to train up to 9 times per week, obtain a
USS card, attend a minimum of two meets (one is a USS
LC State Meet). Swimmers must have their own equipment
including: paddles, pull buoy, short fins, kick board and large
mesh bag to carry equipment. This is an advanced program
that is offered to any Downriver or Western Wayne County
swimmer. In order to participate, you will need the permission of one of the TSC coaching staff. Includes coaching
fees and t-shirt.

USWFA certified instructor, Debbie Barnes,

MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase

The Kennedy Recreation Center has once again teamed-up with the Michigan
Interscholastic High School Hockey League to provide you with the “biggest”
High School Hockey ticket of the season - The Michigan High School Hockey
Showcase. Last year, the top 36 high school hockey teams in the state competed at the Kennedy Recreation Center over a two-day period. Some of the

Chair Yoga
Interested in experiencing the many benefits of yoga, but cannot easily sit on the floor? This
class is for you! Certified Yoga Instructor, Marie Corless, will teach you to relax, breathe deeply, become more flexible, and get a total body workout through yoga techniques with the help
of a chair. The chair will be used to sit on, for balance when standing, as well as, to occasionally help get onto and up from the floor. Classes are held throughout the year on Wednesday

Meditation Class
Allow Meditation to take you to ‘interesting & sometimes exotic places’ within your own
mind! Join us and learn ‘healthy detachment’ from our mind’s “constant chatter”, which will
bring peacefulness and more. We will keep a Meditation Journal, explore different techniques,
and have weekly discussions. A $10 charge will be assessed to cover materials. This 6-week
class meets on Wednesday from 8–9:15 p.m. at Westfield. The program has been completely

Want to see if kayaking is right for you? Learn basic kayaking skills
including wet exit, forward and reverse strokes, getting in and out of a

Here’s a great way to get your feet wet! Riverside Kayak Connection
has teamed-up with Trenton Parks and Recreation to offer a free demo
kayak class. Riverside Kayak’s friendly, knowledgeable staff will be on
hand to guide you through the process of fitting a life jacket, picking a paddle and finding a boat that is perfect for you. Beginners can
start with our most stable recreation boats and test all day, maybe even
discovering their love for a sea kayak. More experienced paddlers can
test the newest models and see what is available in the land of expedition sea kayaking. All equipment is provided. Waiver and wrist band

Women Only Kayaking Adventure
This two week session will allow women to learn the basics of kayaking
in a supportive, women-only environment. This series is equivalent to
an Introduction class and an Intermediate class combined. Over the
first class, brand new beginners will have the chance to learn new skills,
while intermediate paddlers can broaden their horizons in the calm
water of a pool. The final class will cover the basics of planning a day
trip and conclude with a final trip that begins with brunch at Bishop

Trenton resident groups can reserve use of the park picnic shelters
located at North McLouth Park, Meyer Ellias Park, Lions Park and
Tefend Park free of charge. Reservations can be made by calling (734)
675-7300. Beer and Wine, with the exception of North McLouth Park,
is permissible in park by permit only. A valid permit must accompany
user group.
Boat Launch Permits
2010 Boat Launch permits, for the facility located at Rotary Park, are
available at the Recreation Office. You must present your boat and
trailer registration to obtain a yearly permit. The fee is $35 resident and
$70 non-resident. Daily permits are available for $7 at the Recreation
Office during business hours and at the Trenton Police Department 24
hours a day. 2011 boat ramp permits on sale March 1, 2011.

Boating Safety
Sheriff Department Marine Unit is conducting Boating Safety Courses
from 7-10 p.m. at the Westfield Center. Individuals wishing to take the

International Wildlife Refuge
Off-Road Vehicle Safety
Do you have an off-road vehicle or ATV? This class is a must! The
Wayne County Sheriff ’s Marine Unit will conduct Off-Road Vehicle
Safety Courses at the Westfield Center. Each session consists of two
classes, from 7-10 p.m. Students must attend both nights to complete
the course. The first evening, students will receive materials for the
course, complete registration forms and receive instruction in off-road
vehicle safety. The second evening, students will be completing a final
exam and receive certificates when successfully completed. Pre-registration is required. For registration call (734) 675-2660.

Snowmobile Safety Course
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! We’re offering a Snowmobile Safety
Class at the Westfield Center. In cooperation with the DNR, this
course is open to persons of all ages who wish to learn safe snowmobile operation, but is required for students age 12-17 who want to
operate a snowmobile without direct adult supervision. To earn your
certificate, students must attend the entire class, pass a written exam
and be 12 years of age or older. Classes are taught by state certified
instructor. No refunds will be issued. For info call 675-7300.

The Detroit River International
Wildlife Refuge is located along the
lower Detroit River and western
shoreline of Lake Erie. The refuge,
part of the National Wildlife Refuge
System and managed by the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife Service, is one of
over 540 national wildlife refuges.
The Detroit River IWR was
established in 2001 as the first
International Wildlife Refuge in
North America. The authorized
refuge boundary includes islands,
coastal wetlands, marshes, shoals,
and waterfront lands along 48 miles
of shoreline. Its location is unique,
situated in a major metropolitan
area.
The refuge obtained the Humbug
Complex, made up of Humbug
Island, Humbug Marsh, and adjacent undeveloped upland habitats,
in 2004. It includes 410 acres of
unique fish and wildlife habitats in
Trenton and Gibraltar, Michigan.
Humbug Marsh represents the
last mile of natural shoreline on
the U.S. mainland of the Detroit
River. Over 97% of such coastal
wetlands in the river have been lost
to shoreline development and 90%
of such coastal wetlands in western
Lake Erie have disappeared during
the past 50 years. Because they
are home to such a high diversity
of fish and wildlife, such marshes
have been identified by The Nature
Conservancy as globally unique
and globally significant in biological
diversity - nothing like this marsh
exists anywhere outside the Great
Lakes.
The refuge now manages over
5,000 acres and works with public
and private organizations to conserve land for the benefit of people
and wildlife. For more information

YOU can do to stop it!
Before you pour anything into the street or down the
storm drains, stop and think! Storm Drains go directly
into creeks and through wetlands into the Detroit River
and the Great Lakes.
You may not know...
Anything we use in our home, car and business like motor
oil, paint, pesticides, fertilizers and cleaners can accidentally wind up in the street. A little water from rain or a
garden hose can carry automotive and household materials through the storm drain polluting rivers, wetlands and
the Great Lakes. Storm drains are there to drain water
off the streets and yards-not for disposal of hazardous
materials.

Where does it go?
These pollutants within our watershed flow with storm
water through the sewer system into creeks, drains and
outfall into the Trenton Channel and Lake Erie. This
type of pollution is called Storm Water Runoff Pollution
and is a major source of pollutants in our waterways that
endanger wildlife, recreational use, and drinking water.

What is Storm Water Runoff Pollution?
Storm water runoff refers to seasonal rainfall flows and
snowmelts in the spring. It is very noticeable during a
heavy rain storm when large volumes of water drain off
paved areas. Runoff pollution can happen anytime of the
year when excessive water use from irrigation, car washing
and other sources carries trash, lawn clippings and other
urban pollutants into storm drains.
How is it different from other forms of
water pollution?
Storm Water Runoff Pollution can include anything that
washes into the storm drain from the community. Unlike
water pollution linked to factories or sewage treatment
plants; this type can come from city streets, neighborhoods, farms, construction sites and parking lots.

Transfer Station Recycling
Drop-off Center
The City’s Transfer Station at 1801 Van Horn Rd. is
available free of charge for Trenton residents who wish
to dispose of residential rubbish only. Yard waste,
newsprint, plastic containers (#1-7 acceptable), glass, tin,
aluminum cans, empty paint and aerosol cans, and used
motor oil will be accepted for recycling. Trenton businesses, apartment owners and Trenton contractors may
use the Transfer Station but will be assessed a charge of
$35 per cubic yard with a $75 minimum charge. Proof
of residency is required. Please note that refrigerators,
freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and tires cannot
be disposed of by residents at the Transfer Station. Call
for a special pick-up to dispose of these items. It is a
violation of ordinance 74-49 to allow a non-resident
to gain access to the Transfer Station using a resident’s
identification. This violation causes a tax burden for all
Trenton residents. The Transfer Station is open Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Call 675-8470.
Yard Waste Recycling
Curbside collection of yard waste begins in Mid-April
and continues to Thanksgiving, depending on weather.
State & Federal regulations prohibit disposal of yard
waste in regular trash. Curbside pickup of yard waste
on your trash day will only be available by utilizing the
“Yard Waste” carts that may be purchased at the D.P.S.
office for $75.00 (Cash or check). Neighbors may consider sharing a yard waste cart.
Refrigerant Removal
A $45 recycling sticker must be purchased from D.P.S. to
dispose of any refrigerant charged appliance including
refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers. Once this sticker is placed on the appliance it will
be scheduled for pick-up. These appliances cannot be
accepted at transfer station.

When a tree is planted between the curb and sidewalks,
a nominal fee of $50.00 will be assessed to partially
cover the cost of the tree. Residents will get a letter explaining the care and nurturing process of a “new” tree.

Automated Trash Collection
Trenton has modernized residential trash collection. Each residence was provided one
(1) brown 95 gallon trash cart for household trash. Additional carts can be purchased
at the D.P.S. office(1431 West Rd.) for $75.00 cash or check. Containers are identified
with a serial number that is recorded as assigned to the residence.
Residential Rubbish Collection Rules
Set household rubbish at the curb (front pickup) in 95 gallon carts or at the edge of
the alley (rear pickup) at sundown on the eve of the collection day or before 7 a.m. on
the scheduled day. Remove containers the same day according to City Municipal Code
(Art. II Sec.74-39)
• Use only city issued 95 gallon trash carts. Refuse containers shall be adequate in
number for the dwelling, not overfilled and tightly covered when not in use.
• On-board cameras-DVR record packer movements and the cart loading operation.
• Garbage should be wrapped in newspaper or placed in garbage bags to prevent
refuse from freezing to carts in cold weather, keeping carts cleaner.
• Yard waste must be separate from household rubbish. (see yard waste recycling)
• The occupant/property owner may be held responsible for litter existing on property in the City. Rubbish cannot be picked up on private property.
• On collection day, please keep vehicles off the road especially on courts.
• Paint cans and used oil cannot be collected with regular rubbish. Please take these
items to the recycling drop-off center. Unused latex paint may be allowed to
harden by removing the lid and adding kitty litter or dry sand.
• For the health and safety of all, do not dispose of needles or sharps in regular
trash. They can be dropped off at the fire stations in designated containers.
Holiday Rubbish Collection
Your rubbish will be collected one day later than normal and into Saturday of the holiday week as necessary. The affected holidays include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day,
Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Normal rubbish
collection will take place on President’s Day and Veteran’s Day, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve if these holidays fall on a regularly scheduled
pick-up day.
Special/Loader Pick-up
Bulky items too large or too heavy to be placed in a trash cart, require a special pick-up
request. Please locate special pickups away from overhead obstructions such as wires,
trees, etc. Debris that must be collected with a front loader such as concrete, dirt,
bricks, sod or loose leaves will be picked up at a cost of $35 per cubic yard with a $35
minimum charge. Pickup schedules may vary, call 675-5496.
Brush & Leaf Collection
Thursday is city-wide brush collection day. Please separate brush from other debris and locate it away from overhead obstructions such as wires, trees, etc. Smaller
quantities of brush and leaves can be included with your regular “Yard Waste” collection. Curbside leaf collection begins in October and ends in mid-December, weather
permitting. Leaves collected at other times will result in a loader pick-up fee of $35 per

City Park Rules & Regulations
Trenton’s park system offers a variety of activities for residents, plus a place for families to gather for picnics
and other outdoor activities. To ensure safety and enjoyment, please adhere to the following rules.
• City Parks are open to the public from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Only persons receiving special permission from
Trenton City Council may remain in park after hours.
• Motor vehicles are permitted in designated parking areas only. Vehicles in unauthorized areas will be
removed and/or impounded by Trenton Police.
• Dogs must be on a leash not more than 6 ft. in length.
• City ordinance prohibits interfering with animals or nests in City Parks, engaging in sports, games etc. in
other than designated areas, offering articles for sale in City Parks, littering on public or private property,
and riding horses, mules or ponies in City Parks.
• Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in City Parks unless a
permit has been issued by the Parks and Recreation Director
upon written request.
