Hebert Law Center Louisiana State University May 24, 2007 LSULawComProg 5/24/07 2:30 PM Page 2 2007 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER PROGRAM John Neely Kennedy TREASURER OF THE STATE OF LOUISIANA John Kennedy is a native of Zachary, Louisiana. He graduated from Zachary High School in 1969 as co-valedictorian. In 1973, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in political science, philosophy and economics from Vanderbilt University, where he served as president of his senior class and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Kennedy received a juris doctorate degree from the University of Virginia in 1977. There he served as executive editor of the Virginia Law Review and was inducted into The Order of the Coif. He is also a first class honors graduate of Oxford University in Oxford, England, where he received a B.C.L. degree in 1979. Kennedy was elected without opposition to his second term as Treasurer of the State of the Louisiana on October 4, 2003. He was first elected treasurer in 1999 when he unseated the incumbent with 56 percent of the vote. From 1996-1999, he served by gubernatorial appointment as Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue. As the state’s revenue secretary, Kennedy was a member of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board and the Louisiana Tax Free Shopping Commission. His public service also includes special counsel to Governor Buddy Roemer from 1988-1992 and secretary of Governor Roemer’s cabinet from 1990-1992. He is a former member of the Governor’s Commission on Medical Malpractice and the secretary of State’s Commission on Corporations. Kennedy’s civic activities include membership on the board of directors of the Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Corporation. He also serves as chairman of the board of directors of the Louisiana Old State Capitol. He is a past member of the board of directors of the Council for a Better Louisiana and the board of directors of the Institute for the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. Prior to and between service in Louisiana state government, Kennedy was an attorney and partner in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans law firm of Chaffe McCall, where he had a civil litigation practice. He has published articles in the Louisiana Law Review, the Tulane Law Review, the Louisiana Bar Journal and the Akron Law Review. He serves as an adjunct professor at LSU Law Center and as a substitute teacher in the East Baton Rouge Parish public school system. Kennedy resides in Madisonville, Louisiana, with his wife, Rebecca Ann Stulb Kennedy, also an attorney and special magistrate, and their son, Preston. HARRELL ROBERT A. PASCAL GEORGE W. PUGH BENJAMIN M. SHIEBER Justice Jeffrey P. Victory was elected to the Louisiana Supreme Court in 1994. A native of Shreveport, he attended Centenary College where he received a B.A. in history and government. He received his Juris Doctor in 1971 from Tulane University School of Law, where he was a member of the Tulane Law Review. Prior to being elected to the Louisiana Supreme Court, he served on the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeal, and on the 1st Judicial District Court in Caddo Parish. Prior to his election to the bench, Justice Victory was a partner with Tucker, Jeter, Jackson and Victory in Shreveport. He has served as president of the Shreveport Young Lawyers and as a secretary-treasurer of the Shreveport Bar Association.
