In Loving Memory
Nicholas Bunn Boddie, Jr.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, friend and company co-founder

are with Nick’s family and the many others who have been touched by and will miss this
exceptional man. We will remember Nick for his vision and many contributions, without
whom our company would not be what it is today. Nick truly embodied the spirit behind
our company’s commitment to “We Believe in People.”

Boddie-Noell Hardee’s Earn Nine of Twelve Awards
///////////////
///////////////////////////
Each year Hardee’s Food Systems awards the Restaurant Operational Excellence
Award to Hardee’s franchise restaurant locations across the U.S. for
outstanding performance over the past year. In 2011, Hardee’s presented
twelve Operational Excellence Awards (for 2010) with BNE Hardee’s capturing
nine of the twelve awards! The Operational Excellence Award is based on three specific
guidelines: an individual restaurant’s performance in quality assurance audits, its score on an operational
assessment and no more than one guest complaint per period.
“Hardee’s continued success is due in large part to the hard
work and dedication of our franchisees,” said Michael Murphy,
President and Chief Legal Officer of CKE Restaurants, Inc. “All
of our franchise award winners share Hardee’s commitment
to providing guests with the best food, service and dining
experience in the industry. It is a pleasure to have them on the
Hardee’s team. It is our hope that all of our owners and operators
are inspired and motivated by these great achievements and will
continue to help lead us to a successful 2011 and beyond.”
Congratulations to the following Hardee’s for this achievement
in excellence:
Sunset Avenue, Region 1, Rocky Mount, NC
Waverly, Region 2, Waverly, Va
Centerville Turnpike, Region 2, Chesapeake, Va
First Colonial Road, Region 2, Virginia Beach, Va
Great Bridge Blvd., Region 2, Chesapeake, Va
Research Triangle Park, Region 2, Durham, NC
Norton, Region 4, Norton, Va
Stanleytown, Region 4, Stanleytown, Va
Cumberland, Region 4, Cumberland, Ky
“We’re extremely proud of these Hardee’s locations that
received this award because they are top achievers,” said
Terry Lewis, Vice President of Operations for Boddie-Noell’s
Hardee’s restaurant division. “These awards serve as
validation of the hard work, teamwork and commitment that
are present every day in these restaurants.”
“Being named an Operations Excellence
winner is no easy feat. In fact, less than
1 percent of all the restaurants within
the entire Hardee’s system achieve this
distention.”
– Terry Lewis
Hardee’s Food Systems began recognizing restaurants with the
Operational Excellence Awards beginning in 2004. In the past four
years, BNE Hardee’s were recognized with their fair share of the
awards. In 2008 they were awarded eight of the 12 awards given,
in 2009 they received seven of ten, and in 2010 they received nine
of twelve awards!

BNE Hardee’s Raise Over
$130,000 for Service Members
BNE Hardee’s, along with other Hardee’s
across the United States, sold “Stars for
Troops” in May 2011 to raise money for charities benefiting members of the United States
armed forces. During this three-week campaign, BNE restaurants raised over $130,000.
Ninety-seven of our Hardee’s raised at least
$500, and one restaurant raised over $2,500!
97 of our Hardee’s
raised at least $500,
and one restaurant
raised over $2,500!
Guests were asked to donate $1, and in exchange received coupons for their future
visits to Hardee’s. Stars with customers’ names decorated Hardee’s restaurants,
showing their support for the troops.
Proceeds benefited Homes for Our Troops, USA Cares and certain regional veterans
and military groups with existing ties to Hardee’s restaurant communities. Homes for
Our Troops assist severely injured veterans by raising money and coordinating the
process of building a home specialized to their needs, allowing them to live more
independently. USA Cares provides financial and advocacy assistance to active duty
US military service personnel, veterans and their families, with a goal to help restore
financial stability. v

Helping Out During Irene
Recently, Hurricane Irene affected the East Coast, including many of the
communities where our Hardee’s restaurants are located. Hardee’s of Wilson,
North Carolina, gave back to its community by donating cheeseburgers and
French fries to those staying at the American Red Cross shelter in Wilson after
being evacuated from their homes during Hurricane Irene.
Gwen Nicholson-Jenkins, General Manager, says, “We just
love helping the community. We feel like we are right at home
in Wilson. Anything we can do to help our neighbors. It could
have been us. We are just excited to help in any way we
can.” Manager Jimmy Wilson added, “I’ve been down on my
luck before. I like to give back. As a Christian, you just want
to give blessings back.”
Thank you to Hardee’s of Wilson for helping their community
during Hurricane Irene and “giving blessings back.” v

Café Carolina Reintroduces Popular Menu Items
Café Carolina and Bakery, known for their delicious sandwiches, salads and cupcakes, has
reintroduced some old favorites to their menu, as well as added a new, soon-to-be-favorite.
Back by popular demand is the Chicken Portabella Sandwich.
Grilled chicken, portabella and field mushrooms, peppers, onions
and cheese are served in a grilled baguette. Café Carolina has
also brought back the popular Carrot Cake
cupcake – a delicious carrot cake cupcake
topped with cream cheese icing. For the
chocoholics, Café Carolina has introduced
the Chocolate Lover’s cupcake. This cupcake
has six different kinds of chocolate – starting
with chocolate layers with chocolate chips
and a whipped chocolate filling, topped
with chocolate ganache, whipped chocolate
buttercream icing and shaved dark chocolate.

This will satisfy any chocolate craving! v
Brian Speight, Ron Hines - Cameron Village, Raleigh, NC.
Employees go “Over the Edge” for Special Olympics
Brian Speight
It’s late in the day and the wind is picking up. Most
people would be at least a little bit nervous at the
prospect of rappelling 500 feet down 32 stories. But
Brian Speight, of the Cameron Village Café Carolina
simply wants to get this done, and get back to the store.
“I was glad to do this, but I actually missed my time
at the store,” Brian laughs when describing his
participation in Over the Edge. Now, that is dedication.
Dedication and challenges are not new to this 25 year
old, who has already served six years in the Marine
Corp, including a deployment to Iraq, and currently
is a full time student at NC State and also a full time
employee of Boddie-Noell.
Bill Boddie Jr.
Brian is not the only one who geared up, and rappelled
down for a good cause. Three other Café Carolina
employees including Stacy Burke, of the Chapel Hill
restaurant, Matthew Jonsdotter from the Cary restaurant,
as well as Steve Zanella, a Senior General Manager
with Café Carolina also rappelled the 500 feet down the
Wachovia Building in downtown Raleigh in early October.

ENTERPRISER Fall 2011
In Richmond, Virginia, Bill Boddie, Jr. also participated
in Over the Edge. He scaled more than 400 feet down
the 25-story SunTrust building. He said, “My first step
over the edge was chilling to me. I said to myself ‘That’s
a long way down!’” He
was also anxious looking
down at the crowd below.
However, Bill said that after
taking the first step, he felt
“relaxed and calm.”
Ron Hines, the Director
of Operations for Café
Carolina says that
supporting the Special
Olympics is part of the
Bill Boddie Jr. with the Hardee’s star
fabric of the company
culture. “We are very proud
of our commitment to Special Olympics. We have
at least two special needs employees in each of our
stores and several of them have been Special Olympics
athletes,” Ron Hines says. Bill Boddie, Jr. added,
“The cause for me being there is to support Special
Olympics Virginia. I enjoyed the smiles on peoples’
faces once I rappelled down the SunTrust building.”
Boddie-Noell has been partners with Special Olympics
Virginia for more than 30 years. Boddie-Noell and
Hardee’s also partner in Special Olympics Virginia’s
Training for Life Program, which employees persons
with intellectual disabilities. v
THE NEW
New Taco Stacks Offer Serious Bang for Your Buck
TACO STACKS
AUGUST 1—October 9, 2011
The giant Homewrecker burrito at Moe’s Southwest Grill finally has a worthy adversary: Moe’s
new Taco Stacks. Weighing in just over one
pound, this limited time offer features a variety
of flavorful ingredients, including Moe’s famous
Queso, stacked between two crunchy corn shells
and wrapped in a crisped flour tortilla. As always,
every meal is served with free chips and salsa.
Guests can choose from three delicious options
- 100% grass-fed sirloin steak, grain-fed pulled
pork or all natural chicken. The Steak Taco Stack contains marinated
steak, shredded cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms, fresh pico de
gallo, sour cream and Moe’s famous Queso. The Pork Taco Stack has
pulled pork, grilled onions, seasoned pinto beans, fresh pico de gallo,
shredded cheese, and Moe’s famous Queso. The Chicken Taco Stack
has grilled chicken, seasoned pinto
beans, fresh pico de gallo, shredded cheese, black olives, pickled
jalapenos and Moe’s famous Queso.
Everything is then stacked between
two crunchy corn shells and wrapped
in a crisped flour tortilla.
Knowing our signature Homewrecker
burrito is the best-selling item on the
menu; Moe’s believe our guests will
embrace this product which has just
as much to offer in terms of ingredients, with the addition of Moe’s
delicious Queso. v
John Penley, Shift Leader at Moe’s
Lynchburg presenting the New Taco Stack.
Matt Killham’s Opportunity
Matt Killham from Moe’s of
Christopher Newport University
(CNU) in Newport News, VA,
has proven that you can affect
the world and help others as you
work to be a major contributor
in the success of a Moe’s
restaurant. Matt started working
for Moe’s as a student at CNU and showed the
leadership and work habits that enabled him to
become a Shift Leader. After graduating from CNU,
Matt’s Moe’s career ended, but only to pursue a
career that will help others abroad.
“I accepted an English teaching position at a school in Bangkok,
Thailand. This teaching position will group me with Thai students
between the ages of 10-14, as I assist them with their English
reading, writing, and speaking.
I seek to empower the students with a skill that opens educational
and professional doors for them. The position will also present the
opportunity for me to live within a culture so foreign to my
own. I feel I have a lot to offer the students of Bangkok. In a
similar respect, I have a lot to learn from them.”
We want to recognize Matt not only for his
contributions to Moe’s but his desire to
make the world a better place. Good luck
Matt! We wish you the best! v
Moe’s Goes Green with New
Crew Apparel
Customers often judge
a restaurant by its
appearance, including
the appearance of its
employees. Although Moe’s
believes in a comfortable
and fun experience, we do Travis Seely and Nina Salzberg, Moe’s of
CNU in Newport News, Va.
not believe in showing up
for work not ready to impress in a wrinkled or sloppy
uniform. Moe’s new contrast-stitch uniform t-shirts and
“Feed the Moement” caps were rolled out this fall. In
addition to being stylish, Moe’s
new uniform shirt and hats are
environmentally friendly. They are
made from 95% recycled plastic
bottles, making them more
durable and longer wearing, with
better color retention. Moe’s new shirts and hats will
save more than 2 million plastic bottles from landfills.

New Kent Winery Receives 2011 Virginia Governor’s Cup
New Kent Winery’s 2009 Reserve
Chardonnay has been awarded the
2011 Virginia Governor’s Cup for
white wines, the top award given for
wines grown in the state.
The Governor’s Cup was presented to New
Kent Managing Partner Pete Johns and the
winery’s winemaker, Tom Payette, by Gov.
Bob McDonnell and First Lady Maureen
McDonnell at ceremonies at the Virginia
Museum of Fine Arts where the winner was
announced.
New Kent’s 2009 Chardonnay Reserve
was judged best from among 162 wines
entered from 52 wineries, representing all of
the appellations (a geographical indication
identifying where grapes for wine are grown)
in the Commonwealth. The 30th annual
Virginia Governor’s Cup competition for white
wines was sponsored by the Virginia Wineries
Association.
“I am humbled and honored
to accept this award and
do so with great pride”
– Pete Johns
“I am humbled and honored to accept this
award and do so with great pride,” said

ENTERPRISER Fall 2011
Johns in accepting the award this week.
“I acknowledge my partners in this winery,
Boddie-Noell Enterprises, the wonderful
New Kent Winery staff and our exceptional
winemaker, Tom Payette. Tom’s expertise
and magical touch has helped New Kent
Winery establish itself as one of Virginia’s
premier wineries.”
Johns and Payette have worked closely for
more than eight years to establish vineyards
for the Winery which opened publicly in 2008.
“What a huge honor to be recognized for our
2009 Chardonnay Reserve,” said Payette.
“It’s a privilege to work with such fine people
at New Kent Winery and I am blessed to be
able to do what I love to do - making wine,
especially this beautiful Chardonnay.”
Fermentation on the yeast lees (deposits
of dead residual yeast) in small premium
American oak barrels makes this well rounded
creamy Virginia Reserve Chardonnay unique
among other wines. Extremely youthful despite
its vintage, New
Kent Winery’s 2009
Reserve Chardonnay
pairs beautifully with
flavorful cheeses and
all types of shellfish,
veal, pork, poultry,
seafood and cream
sauce pasta dishes,
according to Johns.
The Governor’s
Cup for white wines
was selected from
seven Gold medalist
wineries. A panel of
26 judges from five states judged the wines,
which represent all of the appellations in the
Commonwealth. The Virginia red wines were
judged earlier this year and announced at
the Virginia Wine Expo in February.
The Virginia Governor’s Cup Wine
Competition has been held in Virginia since
1982. The competition is open to Virginia
appellation wines and ciders that use 95
percent or greater fruit grown in Virginia.
New Kent Winery is located in the heart of
New Kent Vineyards, a multifaceted mixeduse planned community. In keeping with the
rural setting of the county, the community
has vineyards scattered throughout the
project which serve as a buffer from the
parkway that travels through the community.

The Marshes Light
Marina held its grand
opening celebration
in June. The weather
was beautiful, and many boats were on display. Free
sailing demonstrations were held, and the marina
gave away the use of a boat slip for a year. The new
Sales and Welcome Center at Marshes Light has also
moved into the Marina.
Marshes Light
Grand Opening
Marshes Light also hosted the 2nd Annual Marshes Light Marina
Superslam in October. Participants competed for prizes of up to
$10,000 for tuna, dolphin, wahoo and king mackerel. This year’s
tournament expanded from last year’s, which featured only a king
mackerel tournament.
Marshes Light is a charming new home community located in the
heart of historic Manteo, NC, located on Roanoke Island. Marshes
Light is only a 5 minute walk down a scenic boardwalk to dining
and shopping in downtown Manteo. It consists of thirteen single
family home sites, two Marina Villa buildings, and a marina. Also
planned for Marshes Light are three additional Marina Village
buildings, flats above retail space, and two thirty-room inns. v

Shared thoughts from your ministry team
God desires to have a deep and meaningful personal relationship with each of us. For some though, God is this mysterious voice behind some
dark cloud who is disconnected or disinterested in our everyday lives. But God is so much more. His desire is to be intimately involved in
every aspect of our lives. He wants to share in our excitement and take on our burdens. But He won’t force the issue. It must be voluntary on
our part. So, if you want to know Him better, approach Him. Respond to His invitation. Take Him at His Word. Go to Him and open the door of
your heart and invite Him in. Allow Him to give you a new heart. One filled with gentleness and humility.

What Working On The

Tidewater Community College, Norfolk, VA
I have learned so much
about Boddie-Noell as
a whole, not only the
company, but the people
that made Boddie-Noell
what it is today. Not only
have I learned about the
history of the company,
and where we came from,
but I’ve learned about our
history of excellence. I’ve learned about where our
tradition of giving back began, and how we truly do
believe in people. Working on the Enterpriser has
made me proud to a part of everything that BNE

Boddie-Noell has been a very generous benefactor of Nash Health Care Foundation’s
Golf classic, Patron’s Gala and the Capital Campaign. From August 2009 through
October 2009 Bill was a key member of a Steering Committee to reorganize and
rejuvenate the Nash Health Care Foundation. This Campaign marks the first major

• When shopping, do so during daylight hours. If you
must shop at night, go with a friend or family member
• If you must use an ATM, choose one that is located
inside a mall, or well lit location
• Avoid carrying your checkbook, cash, and credit cards
together in one wallet and don’t flash money in public
• Keep car doors locked and windows closed
• Park in a well lit area and avoid parking next to vans
or trucks where people can hide
• When approaching your car, be alert of your
surroundings and have your keys ready in hand
• At home, keep doors locked and be cautious of
solicitors. If in doubt, don’t open the door
Theft Prevention
• Don’t leave valuables in plain sight. Store away GPS,
MP3 players, or cell phones
• Lock packages in your trunk or out of plain sight
• When traveling, ask a neighbor to watch your home
and don’t forget to have mail and newspapers stopped
At Boddie-Noell we care about each and every person. Your personal
safety and security are so vitally important. Remember, just a couple
quick steps can make the difference. Happy Holidays!
“Don’t let CRIME spoil
your holiday.”

I want to take the opportunity to express appreciation for all our restaurant leaders and teams do to make our
restaurants the safest place possible for both employees and guests. Are we where we want to be? No. We have
more to do, but let’s not forget to stop and celebrate our successes along the way.
When viewing our historical data, it shows that we have made great
progress reducing employee accidents almost every year. This does
not happen by chance. It takes work. I personally believe it is the
result of the ever increasing number of people committed to
following the BNE Values and “Simply Doing What is Right.” Read
the BNE Values below and consider how each one, when practiced
daily impacts safety (and everything else) in our restaurants:
• Respect, which means being considerate of each
individual, our communities and our environment.
• Honesty, which means being truthful at all times.
• Trust, which means believing in others and fulfilling our
commitments.
• Excellence, which means exceeding the “expected” in
all we do and continually seeking ways to improve our
performance.
• Teamwork, which means enthusiastically working
together to accomplish more.
• Diversity, which means valuing each individual for their
unique contributions.
It’s not complicated, I believe our progress is the result of “Simply
Doing What is Right!”
Thank you for all you have done and continue to do.

Don’t let the “bad guys” ruin
your holiday cheer
Rose Hill’s Very Own World
Champion Sporting Clay
Shooter
Larry Corbett, manager of Rose
Hill Farm and Rose Hill Sporting
Clays, recently returned from
trips to Texas and France as a
world champion sporting clay
shooter. Larry beat out 153 other
competitors, including a former Olympic gold medalist to
place first in his age category at the 2011 World English
Sporting Clays Championship in Texas.
Larry broke 175 out of
the 200 moving targets
over two days to earn a
tie-breaking shoot-off
against 1984 Olympic
gold-medalist Dan
Carlisle, and then won
in overtime to become
the best in the world in
his age group.
This earned Larry, the captain
of Team USA and an AllAmerican, a trip to France to
compete in the World FITASC
(Federation Internationale de
Tir Aux Sportives de Chasse)
championships. Larry helped
lead Team USA to a silver medal
in this competition. He also had
the opportunity to spend a day
in Paris, where he visited the
Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.
Larry, a 32 year employee of
Rose Hill, describes himself
as an “old farm boy.” He received his first gun, a Daisy Red Ryder
BB gun, at the age of 6. He grew up hunting and shooting, but now
rarely hunts unless it is with his grandsons. In addition to his titles
this year, Larry has won the North Carolina veterans championship
8 times, and was on the all-state team a record 13 years. When
questioned about the secret to his success, he credited time,
patience and practice, and said that the eyes are the most important
thing in shooting. Larry shoots approximately 100 targets a week,
but increases his weekly total to 200 to 300 targets before a major
competition.
Larry is not the only champion sporting clay shooter in his family,
though. His daughter, Laurie Oliver, is a 3-time North Carolina ladies
champion, and his grandson Braxton Oliver was the North Carolina
sub-junior champion last year. Braxton will also be competing in the
North Carolina circuit shooting championship this year.
We are proud of Larry, and look forward to hearing about his future
accomplishments in the field of sporting clays. v
