Time Zones
LaPorte County is on Central Standard Time (CST)
and Central Daylight Time (CDT), always staying
in the same time zone as Chicago, IL.
Where We’re Located
LaPorte County is located on the southern tip of
Lake Michigan, bordering the Michigan state line.
LaPorte County is easily accessible by using Exits 34
and 40 when Driving on Interstate 94, and Exits 39
and 49 on the Indiana Interstate 80/90 Toll Road.
R.O.S.E. =
Recognition of Service Excellence
The R.O.S.E. program, used by several hundred
businesses, strives to highlight LaPorte County’s
exceptional employees who provide “above and
beyond” service. We’ve included the top 10
businesses and two ambassadors which have
consistently provided excellent service, in our visitors
guide and their listings are highlighted with a rose.
The ambassador’s award is given to the “best
of the best” front line employees who go above and
beyond the call of duty to promote LaPorte County.
This person consistently wins the ROSE award and
understands that tourism is big business in LaPorte
County and works hard to help grow the industry.
R.O.S.E ambassadors for 2010 are Eric Smith and
Jan Smith. Ask for a R.O.S.E. card when you have
received excellent customer service and help us
reward businesses and employees for creating
an enjoyable experience for you.
Alcoholic Beverages
Alcoholic beverages may be purchased between
7am and 3 am. Liquor stores are not open on
Sundays, but restaurants may serve alcohol. The
cities of Michigan City and LaPorte have open
container laws prohibiting open alcoholic
beverage containers in moving vehicles.
Seat Belts
In Indiana Buckle Up, It’s the Law! Children four
years and younger must be secured in a child
safety seat.
Rip Tips!
Lake Michigan sometimes whips up severe and
dangerous tides - or Rip Currents - that warrant
the posting of “No Swimming” signs on our public
beaches. When the signs are posted or red flags
are flying at lifeguard stations, that means swimming
is not allowed that day! Please adhere to the signs.
To learn whether beaches are open on a particular
day, call the LaPorte County Convention & Visitors
Bureau at 1-800-634-2650, ext. 879.

Visit LaPorte County at any time during the year and you’ll find throngs of
people filtering in and out of places like Washington Park, Hesston Steam
Museum and Mt. Baldy, on their way to or from one of the great events
and attractions we offer here in our Mecca By The Lake. But LaPorte County
is about more than high-profile events and attractions that bring millions of
visitors into the area each year. LaPorte County also serves folks from across
the country looking for a prime spot to host everything from trade shows to
annual conferences.
Since completing a multi-million-dollar expansion less than five years
ago, Blue Chip Casino, Hotel and Spa has become one of the premier
conference and banquet facilities in the Midwest. The main facility – the
Stardust Events Center, is a 15,000-square-foot room with a stage that not
only hosts conferences at all times of the year, but also features some of the
world’s best known artists in concert. Along with the Stardust Events Center,
the Orleans Ballroom and the Sam’s Town Ballroom make up an events
facility that can hold nearly 2,000 people at any given time.
In the grand scheme of things, tourism is not only about offering exciting
things for people to do, but offering something back to the community by
bringing in all types of visitors to eat at our local restaurants, shop in our
stores and stay in our hotels.
When we compete for events like the Association of Indiana County’s
annual conference, the LaPorte County CVB has to make sure event
parameters can be met by local facilities. And not every conference and
banquet needs a large-scale operation. Many smaller events are looking for
an all-encompassing venue with food, lodging and moderate space.
In short, tourism is about economic development. When that
development is not happening by way of high profile events, it’s happening
thanks to the county’s great conference and banquet facilities that stay full all
year long serving as full-service banquet and conference facilities for groups
such as the Professional Outdoor Media Association and the Association of
Indiana Counties.
LaPorte County is special in that it’s two major cities – both under
35,000 in population – offer full service conference centers
and banquet halls in facilities that also can offer
lodging for overnight visitors to whatever event
is taking place inside.
The CVB’s job of filling our conference facilities and hotels with quality
events is made much easier by the quality of our facilities and their staffs.
We work closely with the newly renovated Clarion Inn in Michigan City
and the Best Western LaPorte Hotel and Conference Center to not only
bring in one-time events like conferences, but also to fill their sleeping and
meeting rooms with softball players and their families, or boat racers, who
are in town for events and need places to stay.
So while we love to make a splash with major events, the backbone
of tourism in LaPorte County can also be seen as the steady stream of
visitors the Convention and Visitors Bureau brings to utilize and enjoy the
wonderful, world-class banquet and conference facilities we’re so lucky
to have on our shores.

The Northern Indiana Art & Earth Trail
The Northern Indiana Tourism Development Commission
(NITDC) developed the Art and Earth Trail across the Northern
Indiana area in order to promote the many unique artisan and
agri-tourism experiences throughout the region. The trail has
significantly increased visitation in Northern Indiana and adds an
amazing artistic component to any trip planned to LaPorte County.
Whether from out-of-area visitors or locals interested in a
burgeoning art scene, the Art and Earth Trail has proven a boon to
art and agriculture lovers who have found a new way to experience
the hidden gems of Northern Indiana both in the urban and rural
areas of the seven NITDC counties.

Sounds of Music
In 2002, when Nic and Sunny Orbovich moved to Michigan
City, the classically trained musicians had a vision that they realized very quickly: to bring world class musicians to Northwest
Indiana as a way to expose the people of LaPorte County to the
type of music they loved.
Nine years later, the Orbovich’s idea for the Michigan City
Chamber Music Festival has become a renowned showcase of
classical music and musicians that draws music lovers from miles
around. And each year it continues to help a burgeoning music
community in LaPorte County grow to unexpected heights.
Free to the public, the chamber music festival is supported in total
by private donations, corporate gifts and grants, each of which
allows the organization to host world class events each year.
The music scene in LaPorte County is varied. And while it is
bolstered by events such as the Michigan City Chamber Music
Festival, it is sustained by the many concerts put on each year by
the Michigan City and LaPorte Municipal bands and the LaPorte
County Symphony Orchestra.
Add to those year-round organizations events like the annual
Maple City Blues Festival, the annual Smooth Jazz at South Shore,
and the annual Hoosier Star competition and the reputation of
LaPorte County as a musical hotbed is well deserved.
X LaPorte Little Theatre
218 A Street
LaPorte, IN 46350
The LaPorte County Symphony plays most of its shows at
the historic LaPorte Civic Auditorium in downtown LaPorte,
but also occasionally play in Michigan City. It has the distinction
of debuting four world premier pieces in its history. The symphony
began playing in 1972. It also hosts each year the Hoosier
Star vocal competition. A takeoff on the popular worldwide
phenomenon American Idol, Hoosier Star gives area singers the
opportunity to compete for prizes while showcasing their talents.
The Michigan City and LaPorte Municipal bands can be heard
spreading their sound all summer at places like Fox Memorial Park
in LaPorte and Washington Park in Michigan City.

If the spray of the water, the heat of a sunny, summer day
and the roar of a 3,000 horsepower Mercury powered motor
speeding along Washington Park Beach at speeds nearing
150 miles per hour isn’t enough to peak your interest, then
the Great Lakes Grand Prix might not be your cup of tea.
For the nearly 200,000 people who’ve watched the worlds’
fastest and most colorful offshore powerboats navigate the
unpredictable waters of southern Lake Michigan the last two
years, though, it’s just what the doctor ordered. Each August
since 2009, Michigan City has been transformed as the center of
offshore power boat racing as the fastest catamarans and deep
vee hull race boats have rolled into town. Each year they thrill and
captivate the audience putting on a show for thousands who pack
the beach and the spectator boat area in the water.
A sanctioned event by Super Boat International, the premier
and longest standing racing organization in America, the Great
Lakes Grand Prix offers spectators from throughout the world a
chance to get up close and personal with the drivers, throttle men
and crew members who together each race put their million-dollar
pieces of equipment through their paces.
Walk through the dry pit area of Washington Park on race
weekend and get a birds-eye view of Skaters, Fountains, Apaches
and other of the world’s most advanced race boats, and even
learn inside information from the men and women who take their
lives in their hands every time they sit behind the wheel. And if
you’re lucky, you might even get a chance to sit in the cockpit of a
race boat, under the F-16 fighter jet canopy that protects the race
crews. One thing about boat racers is they love their sport and
they love their fans.
The open, up-close-and-personal atmosphere at the Great
Lakes Grand Prix has quickly made it a sought-after event in
the Great Lakes. And while you’re enjoying the races and the
boats, sample delicious food from many of the area’s fine
dining establishments both at the Washington Park race site
and downtown, on Saturday night, during race week’s block
party and Taste of Michigan City.
Whether you’re a boat lover or just someone who enjoys
spending time at the beach and getting an additional bang for
your sunbathing buck, make sure to visit Michigan City the
weekend of Aug. 2-7, 2011.

The Yellowstone Trail began in South Dakota
in 1912. It quickly expanded to run from
the Twin Cities, Minnesota to the Yellowstone
National Park in Montana. While the intent
of the founders was to create a highway from
coast to coast, the marking of the entire route
took considerable time. In 1914, it was
formally extended to the Idaho border in the
west, and to Chicago in 1915. By 1917,
the entire route was firmly established.

It’s a pretty well-kept secret, but southern LaPorte County has some of the
most precious and fertile soil in the country and for that reason, many of
the nation’s most productive crops are sown right here on the southern
shore of Lake Michigan. And the town of Wanatah – at the epicenter of
such a unique growing area – is a jewel in that agricultural crown. So
come down and visit the annual Scarecrow Festival and the Wanatah
Historical Society while enjoying the amber waves of grain.

County…
Enjoy top-notch home-cooked breakfasts
and lunches while being swept into a different generation amongst décor and music that
reminds one of a small town 1940s café.
B&J’s American Café, in LaPorte, has been

about the city of LaPorte.
Another meal that will remind you of times
gone by is lunch at Carlson’s Drive-In located

retro canopy; forget about the calories and
order a chili cheese dog, onion rings and

it on your window.
The taste wouldn’t be complete
without a trip to the Heston Supper

known for their award–winning prime rib,

located in the county’s deeply forested northeast corner, the Heston Supper Club is a

Enjoy swimming in the largest lake in the world, while you have
your socks knocked off by some of the most spectacular sunsets.
The falling sun silhouettes the beautiful Chicago skyline, visible on
the other side of the lake more than 40 miles away.

Be sure to bring your swimsuits, your sunscreen and your
appetite as Washington Park – built during the Works Progress
Administration’s heyday – offers a day full of activities.
Begin your day by booking an early morning fishing trip with
one of our local captains to catch Coho salmon or lake trout and
then clean and filet it at Washington Park Marina’s new fish
cleaning station. Put it on ice to take home or grill it for lunch.
Then spread your blankets out on the singing sands beach and
soak up the rays that bathe the area most days from May through
September. A stroll to the end of the East Lighthouse Pier, the
state’s only working lighthouse, still stands as a waypoint for many
of the heavy freighters hauling iron ore and other loads to the
nearby Port of Indiana.
A look west from the Michigan City Lighthouse gives you
amazing views of the vistas that transition from Indiana into
Michigan. As your eyes follow the curve of the lake, take in the
stately homes that dot the shoreline as far as the eye can see.
Another WPA gem inside the park is the Washington Park Zoo.
Home to over 250 animals and more than 85 species, the zoo is
just one of five in the state and affords an up-close-and-personal
view of everything from river otters and zebras to grizzly bears
and lemurs. The zoo is also home to two white tigers. Zusha and
Zeus, newly acquired young cats, that have quickly become zoo
favorites and draw crowds from far and wide.
The kids will enjoy the park’s newest attraction- Oasis Splash
Pad Water Park, perfect for children of all ages. Fun for mom
and dad, too!
Quell the hunger pangs a day at the beach can cause by
enjoying a meal at the concession stands and restaurants located
inside the park or just feet away. Try the delicious crab cakes at
Maxine’s, a juicy burger at Swingbelly’s or dance the night
away on the upper deck at Matey’s, a beachgoers favorite
nautical - themed bar/ restaurant.
It’s all just a small part of what makes a great day at Michigan
City’s best, most accessible and beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline.

We’ ve Got Game
In a county that offers so much for so many, finding exceptional
ways to enjoy your time in LaPorte County is easy. As far as tourism
fare is concerned, the blueberries and apples are plentiful, the lakes
– both Great and inland – offer hours of wet fun, and the museums,
galleries and theaters allow for plenty of enjoyment when not sailing
or swimming.
But for those looking to enjoy their time in LaPorte County in
different ways, we’re at the forefront of another visitor attraction
that in recent years has become one of the most popular tourismrelated genres in the country.
Sports tourism has proven one of the most reliable sources
of visitor dollars in America, even as folks have cut back on
spending a bit to make sure their budgets don’t get stretched too
far. In tougher times, choices often have to be made between the
traditional family vacation and the want of kids to spend time
in the summer on the baseball field or the volleyball court.
Outboard perch tournament draw many of the
most accomplished anglers from throughout the Midwest. But no mention of the
sporting life in LaPorte County would
be complete without mentioning the big
draw – Lake Michigan boat racing.
Whether by wind or raw power,
Michigan City is host to many of the
world’s top seamen each summer
as it serves as home to the annual
Great Lakes Grand Prix offshore
powerboat race, as well as
the ages-old Columbia Yacht
Race, the Dunes Regatta
and the popular Tri-State
Regatta.
So when it comes to choosing between a week at an
amusement park or at your daughter’s softball tournament, it’s
becoming commonplace to turn the three-day baseball tournament
into that summer vacation the family looks forward to each year.
It’s a great way to save money.
With world-class sports facilities at all corners, LaPorte County
has become a sought-after spot not only for youth sporting events,
but for several amazing amateur and professional sporting events.
Kesling Park in LaPorte and Patriot Park in Michigan City
currently are the chosen homes for youth and adult baseball and
softball tournaments that make finding an open summer weekend
at either facility nearly impossible.
The United States Specialty Sports Association, along with
the National Softball Association and Baseball Players Association,
have built regional and nationwide events at both facilities,
including an NSA world series that brings the Midwest’s best 12year-old female softball players into the county for a week.
Both sprawling complexes are also used for league play, as well.
While softball, baseball and soccer have ample space to call home
in LaPorte County, other sports have a strong presence locally, as
well. The Midwest’s best volleyball players – both from middle and
high school programs and major college, division one schools –
hone their skills at the Dunes Volleyball Center in Rolling Prairie.
And the Midwest’s best fishermen catch their bounties each year
both in the smaller waters of the county’s inland lakes and on Lake
Michigan. The annual Hoosier CoHo Classic, Chief’s Bait and Tony’s

Between the Lions
There are so many attractions in LaPorte County - the beautiful
Lake Michigan shoreline and Washington Park, the posh elegance
and exciting gaming at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel and Spa or the stylish
and affordable shopping at Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets, that the
phrase “There’s always something to do in LaPorte County,” sums it up.
The amazing possibilities stretch far beyond those amenities and
while the “big three” have always drawn visitors to the area, there are
so many more attractions to explore.
Regardless of what you’re looking for when deciding on a weekend
getaway or a summer vacation, it most likely can be found among the
rolling hills, ample fields, world-class art districts and historical diamonds
in the rough that dot the county’s landscape.
Take a trip around northeast LaPorte County the way settlers of the
area did 150 years ago, on one of three steam powered trains at the
Hesston Steam Museum. The museum is a great family destination and
kids will enjoy the fall Ghost Train and the Candy Cane Express that runs
in December.
The art and museum scene is plentiful with galleries dotting the
downtowns of both of Michigan City and LaPorte, and the hills and prairies
of the county. The annual Heart of Art gallery and studio tour takes place
each October, allowing visitors a self-guided tour through the county’s art
community, touring galleries and studios and meeting artists.
After watching local potters, painters and glass blowers ply their craft,
visitors can step back in time at the Old Lighthouse Museum an original 1858
light station structure, showcasing Great Lakes history, shipwrecks and the era
of sailing ships or view displays of military memorabilia from all eras including
military vehicle displays, uniforms, photos, war posters and medals at the
Great Lakes Museum of Military History.
Nature also takes center stage at many of the local parks and gardens.
International Friendship Gardens theme, Peace and Friendship to all Nations,
has its roots from the 1934 World’s Fair and takes visitors on a stunning visual
tour of much of the flora indigenous to the area while also introducing viewers
to many beautiful plants and flowers from around the world. At the house that
freight cars built, the turn-of-the-century mansion built by millionaire railroad
industrialist John H. Barker features art objects, original furnishings, spectacular
gardens and Christmas tours and summer teas.
After a trip to the Gardens, visitors can hike to the top of Mt. Baldy
in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Created centuries ago by
glaciers as the Ice Age came to an end; today, Mount Baldy is the
largest “living” dune and moves south at a rate of four to five
feet each year, burying all woodlands in its path.

LaPorte Historical Society
When W.A. Jones, an iron foundry owner
in Chicago, a world traveler and an avid
collector, died in 1921 some years after
purchasing a Johnson Road home on LaPorte’s
northwest side, he bequeathed upon LaPorte
County a collection that decades later would
turn it into one of the most sought after destinations for gun collectors.
The Jones collection of antique weapons
has rested with the LaPorte County Historical
Society since Jones died, and though it has
been moved several times – including from a
downtown museum to a newly created site
south of LaPorte – it remains one of the world’s
largest and most prestigious collections.

The grouping of some 850 antique guns
and more than 1,000 weapons in total sits
under lock and key – as well as alarm – at the
museum, and serves as the centerpiece
of a museum that takes visitors on a visual and
audio tour of LaPorte County.

Aside from guns and cars, the museum
offers an intriguing look into the life of one of
the county’s most notorious personalities – a
woman who put LaPorte on the map more than
a century ago for what historians believe was
a meticulously planned ruse that ended with
the mysterious deaths of many people.Belle
Gunness, a Norwegian émigré, allegedly
made a life north of LaPorte convincing lonely
men to come to the U.S., and marry her. She
then apparently killed them and collected
insurance money.
In 1908, the Gunness farm burned,
killing all of Belle’s children. While searching the burnt out McClung Road homestead
authorities found several male bodies buried
underground. Historians say Belle may have
killed upwards of 40 people.
LaPorte County has a varied, and
interesting history and the county’s historical
society museum does a marvelous job in
recounting it. Take a day – or maybe two
– and learn about the county’s history as a
manufacturing hub, an agricultural mecca
and a really interesting place.
The antique automobile collection of
prominent local dentist, Dr. Peter Kesling,
adds a unique touch to the museum as it not
only exhibits cars ranging from a DeLorean to
a 1903 Vinton, but a one-seater electric car
built by Dr. Kesling, himself. The collection
also features Indiana-made vehicles like
Auburns, Duesenbergs and Cords.
