The Dem Newsletter - North Sydney Public School
The Dem Newsletter Friday 27 March – Week 9 Term 1 Dear Parents / Carers What a night!!!! Last Friday night’s Welcome Festival was a fantastic success. Despite the fluctuating weather conditions students and parents turned up in their hundreds all ready to celebrate another wonderful start to the year and to welcome our new families to North Sydney Demonstration School. Our 35 special guests from China were amazed at the multitude of games, rides and sideshows available for them to enjoy. They were even more amazed by the kindness and enthusiasm with which they were embraced by our students. Well done boys and girls. You are great role models and Ambassadors for Harmony Day. I would like to say a big thank you to the hard working members of the P&C and to the many parent volunteers who worked hard to make the night such a great success. Parent and Teacher Interviews Next week teachers will be meeting with parents before and after school to discuss their child’s needs and goals for the year. Most parents have booked a time to meet with their child’s teacher online. The online booking system has now closed. If you missed the deadline, which was communicated on the flyer that went home on Monday, and you would still like to meet with your child’s teacher, please contact your teacher via email to organise an appointment time (most likely for early next term). Toys and much loved objects at school As you will probably remember from your own childhood there are certain toys, games and trinkets that go in and out of fashion over the years (marbles, paper planes, football cards, pokemon cards, dominoes, smurfs, loom bands, elastics etc). These items are often mass produced and therefore all look exactly the same. Unfortunately when they arrive at school it is very hard to determine which is your child’s much loved trinket and which is another student’s. While these fads will no doubt become part of your child’s happy playground memories we ask that you help us to navigate this exciting time by doing the following: • Label or put an identifying feature on the item where possible (not easy with a marble I know); • Speak to your child about fairness and honesty (We will continue to reinforce these values in the classroom); • Discuss with your child the pros and cons of taking these items to schools so that they are aware of the risk associated with taking valued items to school. This also includes a discussion about how to look after their belongings so that they don’t become lost or misplaced. Our teachers will continue to actively supervise your child’s playground activities to the very best of their abilities and are looking forward to the next playground craze. Thank you for your support with this. First Day Back Next Term The first day back for students next term is Tuesday 21 April. Since last week another 120 students have signed up for this year’s NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) – that’s nearly 200 students to date! Don’t panic if you or your child has not had a chance to log their books. As long as you update your child’s record by the deadline (21 August 2015), a completion certificate will be awarded to them. To encourage our students, a special bookmark will be awarded to those students who reached their first 10 book milestone after the April holidays. Thank you for assisting your child to return their books on time. With April holidays just around the corner, why not encourage your child to borrow books for the holidays? Your child can borrow up to 5 books for the holidays while stock last. Happy reading Alice Bennett ([email protected]) Research, ICT & Library FABStar! FABStar! is an initiative to recognise positive behaviours in the playground. FABStar! slips were drawn from all the students who received FABStar! slips in recognition of their positive behaviours on the playground last week. The K-2 Fabstars for this week are Harry and Max. These kind boys found a Kindergarten child with no-one to play with, so they included him in their game. Thanks boys for your thoughtfulness. The Year 3-6 Fabstars for this week are: • Matilda, Zaya and Olivia from Year 3 who helped a student who had dropped his fruit; and • Ruve from Year 6 who went out of her way to collect rubbish.
