UNITED AD
WELCOME TO GONERFEST!
Gonerfest Seven once
again brings
you the best rock n roll, punk, garage and oddball bands from across
the world. This year bands are
coming from Japan, England, Italy,
Mexico, Australia, Canada, and all
over the United States. If you're
not familiar with `em, we've
got short descriptions for each
alongside their listings. They've
come a long way to be here and
they're going to put on a heck
of a show. Festival goers will be coming from all over the world, and we will
be streaming the fest over the internet for
unlucky souls who couldn't be here in person.
Gonerfest is truly a worldwide phenomenon. Memphians, please show our visitors that Memphis
can
be the best place in the world to visit. Goner
festers- tip your bartenders, patronize our adver
tisers, buy merchandise from the bands, and
most of
all, have fun! Let's get Gone!

10:30 MISSING MONUMENTS (New Orleans, LA)
"The inimitable 'King Louie' Bankston and his
band,
the Missing Monuments, make flippant, high-energ

Their
songs are winding, head-banging chargers, as
loose and
catchy as they are teeming with hooks and
swampy
irreverence." - CREATIVE LOAFING (Atlanta)
11:15 VERMILLION SANDS (Treviso, Italy)
"Large as Southwestern skies
and brimming with heat-sick
melancholy , the group's pleasant

that sounds homemade without
feeling insular." - PITCHFORK
12:00 HAUNTED GEORGE (Los Ang

"A paranoid, nightmarish and
altogether disturbed aural hallucination; each drum thud the
lockstep of a weary fella
who's lost himself in the twil

humanity, yet rife with fear
and exaggerated panic. Y'know,
a
BAD TRIP." - TERMINAL BOREDOM
l:OO TY SEGALL (San Francisco,
CA)
"You're not going to hear many
rock records that'll kick
you square in the pants quit

kid's got heart, brains, and quit

throws himself body and soul
into these tunes. Segall make

5:00 LOVE COLLECTOR (Austin, TX)
With Shawn Carpetbagger, Goner hero Rob
Yazzie (ex-Fells), and Robin Retox (Shitty

Brit RnB merchants the Downliner Sect."SMASHIN' TRANSISTORS - PITCHFORK

"the last genuine lost genius" -THE SUNDAY TIMES
12:00 STRAPPING FIELDHANDS (Philadelphia, PA)
"The Strapping Fieldhands started out in the early '90s playing 'Appalachian inbred squonk' on junk shop instruments.
They sound like denizens of some stunningly pretty British
backwater where people fiddle with radio antennae to pick
up faint broadcasts of skiffle, traditional English folk and
'60s psychedelic rock. They're equally adept at shambolic, Syd
Barrett-style balladry and barnburning freak rock reminiscent
of Pere Ubu or the Godz; usually they strike a balance between the two and end up with music that is self-consciously strange but unpretentious, and beautiful but more than a
little unsettling." -SPLENDID
1:00 OBLIVIANS (Memphis, TN)
"The Oblivians, inspired by that pure, powerful music, took
what began as a joke band, and started a Rock & Roll religion exalting drugs, sex, violence, and yes, the Lord. The
Oblivians rip with a baseness and honesty that is truly a
thing to behold." -BUDDYHEAD

9:45 GIRLS AT DAWN (Brooklyn, NY)
"Pop music at its most bare bones and rudimentary, sounding not just like a first take, but
possibly the first time they've picked up these

(Columbus, OH)
"The Turks exhibit
an innate mastery of
rock 'n' roll's truly
important gestures,
the flipped bird, the
dropped trou, the
beer-stein hoist, not
to mention a devotion
to the hallowed threechords-and-a-cloud-ofphlegm formulation
that dates back to
the '50s."
-TROUSER PRESS
1:00 GUITAR WOLF
(Tokyo, Japan)
"Decked out in head

a devastating cherry

Tokyo’s Guitar Wolf
are cooler than you
are. Like the Ramones
- an obvious influence along with Link
Wray, Johnny Thunders,
MC5, and The Stooges
- Guitar Wolf successfully pull off the
balancing act between
high art concept and
gut-driven punk rock,
throwing in an unhealthy (or healthy,
depending on how you
look at it) obsession
with sex, alcohol, and
UFOs for good measure."

Things To Do In Memphis
(besides Gonerfest!)
Current listings of events can be found in both the weekly Memphis Flyer and in the
Playbook section of the Commercial Appeal daily paper.
Sun Studio 706 Union Ave (901) 521-0664
The room where Sam Phillips, Elvis, Scotty & Bill changed the world, where
Howlin' Wolf moaned at Midnight, where Jerry Lee Lewis debated about making the devil's music, where Carl Perkins put down "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Her
Love Rubbed Off," where Billy Lee Riley commanded his Little Green Men to
play "Flyin' Saucer Rock n Roll," where Ike Turner pounded piano behind Jackie
Brenston on "Rocket 88."
Stax Studio Museum 926 E McLemore Ave (901) 942-7685
Rebuilt from languishing as a vacant lot for years, now there's a music school
on one side and a Smithsonian-quality museum on the other. If you can come
out of this tour without being a Rufus Thomas fan I don't want to know you.
The hall of records will bring most Gonerfest visitors to their knees. See the
Sir Isaac & The Doo Dads 45! Check out Isaac Hayes' gold Cadillac! Awesome!
The Mississippi River
See the river! You can drive across either bridge into Arkansas and get a
great view, or just go down to the banks and check it out. Follow Riverside Drive to Channel 3 drive to go to the Yellow Fever memorial & National
Ornamental Metal Museum (very cool in its own right) for a great view of the
barges plowing along & the constantly-churning water. The Mississippi is the
whole reason Memphis exists. Don't miss it.
Peabody Ducks Peabody Hotel Union & 2nd St
Sure, go ahead and be a tourist. A tuxedoed Duck Master leads the ducks into
a fountain in the middle of the Peabody Hotel lobby at 11am each morning and
back up to their penthouse digs at 5pm. Ridiculous? Yeah! Gorgeous hotel lobby
& bar. Expensive drinks.
Piggly Wiggly 1620 Madison Ave
Memphis-born first modern supermarket. They finally sell t-shirts after years of
being bootlegged by Art School kids with silkscreens in Williamsburg. Open 24
hours.
Beale Street.
Despite being a Disneyland for the blues, there’s decent food and some good
bands. Try Dyer's greaseburger if you dare! A lot of the Beale St. musicians
have been around and have played at Stax, Royal, and many other Memphis studios. Ride, Sally, ride!
National Civil Rights Museum
A tribute to the Civil Rights Movement at the motel where Martin Luther
King, Jr. was assassinated. A dark moment in Memphis history.
Graceland
Elvis is king. His house is a perfect 1970s time capsule. Pricey, but, if you're
in the right mood, cool. Hall of jumpsuits & other costumes is great! Jungle
Room rules. We keep getting older, Graceland stays the same age. (For more
hilarity, find Graceland, Too in Holly Springs, MS!)

Drinking
& Nightclubs
Lamplighter 1702 Madison (901) 726-9916
Our favorite beer joint ever. You
can BYOBooze if you pay for setups. All the beat up 50s pop and
country 45s (and Lou Reed's "Vicious!")
sound great on the jukebox. The best
burger in Memphis?
Buccaneer 1368 Monroe (901) 278-0909
The site of the first Gonerfest, and
our favorite Pirate-themed venue
in the city. Great bartenders, great
atmosphere. Cozy!
Old Zinnies 1688 Madison (901)726-5004
If you want a nice dark place to
get a drink midday, Zinnies is the
place. Just get out of there by 10
pm- college kids start a-whoopin' and
a-hollerin on most nights and can
really bring on the migraines.
Murphy's 1589 Madison (901) 726-4193
Across the street from what used
to be the Well and Antenna Club,
Murphy's supplied the hard alcohol to
the rockers punking it up across the
street. They saved the Antenna sign
& now host punk rock shows that
would have gone to the Antenna back
in the day.
22
Wild Bill's 1580 Vollentine (901) 726-5473
Jook joint w/ quarts & live r&b /
blues in Midtown. Wild Bill passed
away a few years back, but the
jookin goes on.
The Beauty Shop
966 S. Cooper (901)-272-7111
Around the corner from Goner on
Cooper. Can set you up with any
number of elegant & impressive concoctions on which to sip.
Music Stores
Go see our buddy John Lowe at
Xanadu - 2200 Central (901 274-9885),
Creator of the one and two-string
"Lowebow" guitars. He's also got
strings and effects and Orange amps
and Silvertones. Tons of books, too.
Paperbacks, hardbacks, sci-fi, mystery,
and weirdness. Live Lowebow performances by request!
Drummers shouldn't miss Memphis Drum
Shop, at 878 South Cooper (901) 2762328 - around the corner from Goner.
Tell 'em GONER sent ya. The best
drum shop for hundreds of miles.
Eating
Eating is a big deal in Memphis. Barbecue
and soul food (fried chicken, pork chops,
etc) have been honed to a fine science.
Plus it's cheap! Here are a few of our
favorite places & others of note. Be sure
to tell 'em you're here for Gonerfest!
Payne's BBQ
1762 Lamar (901) 272-1523
Our favorite chop shoulder sandwich.
Smoked Sausage, too! No booze. Housed
in a converted old garage. Cool! Open
for lunch until sundown. Closed Mondays.
Closed Sundays & Mondays.
Gus' Fried Chicken
310 S Front (901) 527-4877
World famous fried chicken, chunky crust,
served with a quart of beer… YES! Frying Chicken can take a while so don't
be in a rush. Sides taste like they came
straight from the can, unfortunately, so
don't expect much there.
Uncle Lou's Fried Chicken
3633 Millbranch Rd (901) 332-2367
Fantastic chicken wings like no other.
Out by the airport- get some to go
as you're leaving town? You will be the
envy of the entire airport.
Cozy Corner
745 N Parkway (901) 527-9158
Famous for their Cornish game hens,
which I've never tried 'cause it would
mean missing out on eating more RIBS!
Saucy. Great. Frequent Jerry "The King"
Lawler sightings! RIBS!
Rendezvous
52 S 2nd St (in alley) (901) 523-2746
Famous Downtown Barbecue restaurant. Dry
Rub ribs. Good sausage / cheese plate.
Does massive business and food can be inconsistent. Plantation-style atmosphere is
attractive to some, a turn-off for others.
24
Kwik Chek
2013 Madison (901) 274-9293
Employers of many rockers through the
years, cheap delicious sandwiches. Muffaletta, pork roast, and vegetarian Bloody
Valentine are good starting points. Korean
dishes as well. Bi Bim Bap!
Barbecue Shop
1782 Madison (901) 272-1277
Solid and spicy Midtown barbecue with
the bonus of staying open later than
most and serving beer.
Soul Fish
862 S Cooper (901) 725-0722
Best new restaurant in Cooper-Young area
around Goner Store.. Po-boys & platters of
chicken & catfish. Low-key, but crowded
most dinnertimes. Cuban and Memphis sandwiches are fantastic.
Lou's Pizza Pie
2158 Young Avenue
Neighbors to our east, with tasty sundried tomato & pesto pizzas. Pepperoni
and more basic toppings, too.
Young Avenue Deli
2119 Young Avenue (901) 278-0034
Known for 1/2 pound burgers, wraps, and
a huge menu. Tons of different beers
on tap and in bottles. Right down the
street from the Goner store.
Trolley Stop
704 Madison Avenue (901) 526-1361
Delicious pizzas, and sandwiches in a
mini-farmer's market-. FRESH!
Déjà vu
936 Florida St (901) 942-1400.
Downtown Cajun restaurant is only open
during the day. Amazing New Orleans
food... better than New Orleans!
VEGETARIANS
Memphis is definitely a meat-eater's town, but
there are vegetarian options around. Middle
Eastern, Thai, Vietnamese, and
Indian restaurants are your best bets, but most sandwich
joints have some vegetarian options, too. Beware
the greens and the beans, too- they're usually
cooked with pork!

Top 3 Jay Reatard Moments in Memphis
1) Recording the "Teenage Hate" lp in my
bedroom. Jay recording the vocal
tracks, screaming... my mom must of
thought we were nuts!
2) Eating spaghetti at my parents house,
then driving downtown to get a
crackhead to buy us a liter of vodka.
then goin to Sean's (Steve Al Bundy)
house in West Memphis, got really
wasted... Jay puking full spaghetti
noodles all over Bundy's floor.
3) Jay's 21st Birthday @ the hi tone... Jay
did bellyflop off a chair on to a
table full of beer bottles and glasses
where a group of strangers were
drinkin. Got kicked out then Alicja
and I brought him home to clean the
3 inch gash on his back in the shower.
I have many great "Jay moments in Memphis" strories. These are just a few that
I'll never forget.
