A COMPONENT OF THE AMERICAN AND FLORIDA DENTAL ASSOCIATION VOLUME 27 - ISSUE 4 – WINTER 2013 In This Issue: President’s Message JDS President’s Message Mission Of Mercy Up-Coming CE Seminar Info New Member Spotlight Volunteer Opportunities Classifieds Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 6 Page 7 Page 10 Page 14 Hi! I'm back. Back in the pages of your Northeast District Dental Association newsletter and back from the 2013 American Dental Association meeting in New Orleans as a first time delegate from the 17th District. Like any new experience, I learned so much. This is what you should know: The 17th District is comprised of the entire state of Florida. We are one of 5 districts that is unique in this regard. The representation on the delegation was equally as unique. From the far corners of our state, Miami to Panama City, tenured delegates, young graduates, and mid-career dentists were all represented. As were varied ethnicities and backgrounds: Blacks, whites, hispanics, male, female, gay, military retirees, high-end urban, remote rural practitioners, beachies and midwestern farm girls (that's me! ) The subspecialties in dentistry were represented as well. YOUR interests were served by pedodontists, periodontists, endodontists, orthodontists, oral surgeons and general dentists. FROM FLORIDA! This group was not from the old-school, good ol' boy network. It was amazing to see how well OUR coalition, this so varied and diverse group of individuals, worked together. The practice of dentistry in the state of Florida was tantamount to preserving dentistry as a respected and revered profession. I was proud to serve. What did we accomplish? Of the over 150 resolutions the two of most concern to our members are: There will be no dues increase for the year 2014. Due to reapportionment, Florida has one less delegate. What does this mean? Well. A bit of status quo. But really it means your membership in the tripartite has never been as important as it is today. We need you, your associate, your dental golfing buddies and book club pals as well as your dental school classmates to keep dentistry strong and moving forward. I always personally felt my ADA membership was the most important organization of any to which I belonged. After serving on the delegation, I now know for sure, it is. Moving forward, I want to personally invite each of you to participate in Florida's first Mission of Mercy (MOM) event to be held March 28 and 29 in Tampa. What is this event? One hundred dental chairs will be brought to the Tampa fairgrounds and set up to provide dental services on a first-come first-served basis to indigent patients for two entire days. This is a huge undertaking requiring volunteers at all levels that has proven to be immensely successful in other states. It is impressive for legislators to see and to know that the dental community comes together in this way. Governor Rick Scott has signed on and will be there. Come, join the event this year and see what it is all about. Our region, Northeast Florida, is in line to host the second MOM event next year and we will definitely need you then! Wishing each of you health, happiness and continued success in the New Year!! Linda A. Trotter, DMD, FAGD JACKSONVILLE DENTAL SOCIETY PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE It has been a busy fall season for the Jacksonville Dental Society. We had a phenomenal turn out for the Dental Licensure Renewal Courses in September. It was great to see so many familiar faces in the crowd. A special thank you goes out to Dr. Will Martin from the University of Florida College of Dentistry. His recent lecture on “Preventing and Managing Prosthetic Complications in the Implant Patient” was outstanding. We had a wonderful JDS Family Day at the Jacksonville Jaguars game on October 20th. The weather was amazing and the Jags Cabanas proved to be a perfect Tailgate venue. Thank you to all those who attended. The JDS will once again team up with the Sulzbacher Dental Clinic (Downtown Center) to host our annual “Give Kids a Smile” campaign on Saturday February 8th, 2014. This is an opportunity for dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and team members to volunteer their time and expertise to an extremely worthy and rewarding cause. Donations of dental supplies, dental equipment and monetary donations will be graciously accepted, as well. As we enter the holiday season and begin to reflect upon all that we are thankful for, I encourage each of you to contribute in any way possible. The New Year’s calendar will include several world-class lectures. In January, local endodontist and national speaker, Dr. Frank Cervone will be presenting “Endodontics vs. Dental Implants – The choice is yours.” Dr. Christopher Barwacz from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry will present “Custom Provisionalization and Immediate Temporization” at our February dinner meeting. These outstanding clinicians are dynamic speakers and will provide the most current information and clinical tips in each of their specialties. The Jacksonville Dental Society, Clay County Dental Society, and the Northeast District Dental Association are proud to present Dr. David Hornbrook for our Spring Full Day Meeting. Dr. Hornbrook will be presenting “Hot Topics in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry” at the beautiful TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse on March 21, 2014. Dr. Hornbrook’s fast paced lecture covers the gamut of aesthetic and adhesive dentistry and is sure to boost any restorative practice. This is a unique opportunity to hear from a true leader in our field. I encourage each of you to attend. And don’t forget to tell a friend! Thank you for your continued support of the JDS. If you would like further information, please refer to our website: www.jaxdentalsociety.com. Best wishes for continued happiness and success in 2014. Best regards, Christopher M. Fetner, has joined Fetner & Hartigan periodontal practice as a full time periodontist. After graduating from the University of Florida College of Dentistry in June 2010, Michael began his three-year periodontal residency at the University of Florida where he received his Masters Degree in Periodontics. For his final residency year, Michael was elected "Chief Resident" to represent the residents in crucial decisions. Also during his residency, Michael was one of the first residents to receive a grant to conduct research on subcrestal implant placement. Michael’s published research in implantology has given him the opportunity to present at conferences around the country while still in his residency. In May, 2013, Michael was awarded the Richard J. Lazzara fellowship in advanced implant surgery, which will allow him to continue his dental implant research while also being a full-time periodontist at Fetner & Hartigan. Michael is the first University of Florida College of Dentistry Periodontal Resident to receive this prestigious award. Michael has three years experience in periodontal procedures including: periodontal surgery, implants, sinus grafts, block grafts, crown lengthening, pre-orthodontic surgery and mucogingival procedures. In March 2013, Michael married his college sweetheart, Sondra Randon Fetner, who is an attorney working for a firm in Gainesville, Florida. They live in Avondale with their two dogs, Lucas and Lilly. If you would like to meet Michael in person, please feel free to contact our office. Michael is currently accepting new patients and looks forward to becoming an active member in our dental community. After graduating from the University of Florida and University of Louisville School of Dentistry, Dr. Kelly Standish is excited to return to Fleming Island to work with her father in private practice at Eagle Harbor Dental, located on Eagle Harbor Parkway. She is enjoying the opportunities that come with working alongside a mentor, and her patients have made the transition into fulltime practice very engaging and fulfilling. She has also begun working at Clay County Dental Care on her days off to provide much-needed dental services to the community. Dr. Kelly is a member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, and Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity. She has just purchased her first home in Avondale with her husband, submariner LT Max Mayo. Their free time is spent renovating their new home, running, and playing with their Westie Carabelli. Dr. Jacquelyn Miller was born and raised in Fernandina Beach, Florida. She was introduced to the field of dentistry early in life by her father, Dr. Mark Olbina, a general dentist on Amelia Island. An avid Gator football fan, Dr. Miller attended the University of Florida for her undergraduate studies and then Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine for her DMD. In dental school she was President of the NSU ASDA chapter and graduated with Honors through the Endodontic Honors program in 2013. She also met her husband, Dr. Paul Miller, while they were in dental school and they were married this October. Dr. Miller is now an associate in her father’s practice, Amelia Gentle Dentistry, and is excited to be a part of such a rewarding profession. 7 Northeast District Dental Association • Winter 2013 8 Northeast District Dental Association • Winter 2013 THE NEDDA IS PROUD TO OFFER ITS’ MEMBERS PEER REVIEW SERVICES The NEDDA peer review program is in place to help settle disputes between patients and dentists or third-party payers and dentists. Disputes that may be addressed through peer review involve appropriateness and quality of care. Peer review offers recourse for the patient and dentist in disputes that would not constitute a legal case, because of the nature of the complaint. It also avoids the high cost of litigation for both the dentist and patient. Using peer review, the dentist may preserve his or her good reputation and integrity in the community. Peer review is also a very credible system in that the parties in the dispute have an opportunity to speak for themselves directly and so gain satisfaction that his or her side of the story has been accurately presented. Also, with the mediator and peer review committee being dentists, the parties in the dispute can be confident that the oral health issue at hand is well understood by the mediator and committee. The procedure for initiating peer review is to contact the dental society and request peer review. The component society conducts the peer review and conveys its decision to the dentist and other party involved in the peer review. Under some circumstances, decisions of the peer review committee at the component level can be appealed to the state dental association by either the dentist or the other involved party. For more information on peer review processes and procedures and to find out if your issue qualifies for peer review, please contact NEDDA Executive Director, Debbie DeVille. A coalition for increasing access to care in Northeast Florida has been formed with the mission to serve the community in increasing education and awareness of the oral health resources available to the underserved in the area. It’s that time of year again, time for us to come together and help the children of our community that are desperately in need of dental care. Please mark your calendars and come to the Give Kids a Smile event that is being held on Saturday February 8th from 7:30 am until 4:30 pm. During this time, your skills are needed at the Sulzbacher Dental Clinic in downtown Jacksonville to provide care to those children in our community who are in need of quality dental treatment. Over the last 2 years, this event has brought together dentists, assistants, hygienists, hygiene students and support staff to serve over 100 children and provide in excess of $70,000 worth of care. GKAS also provides a venue to educate the patients and parents on the importance of achieving and maintaining excellent oral health by providing disclosing/oral hygiene stations and other interactive educational opportunities.
