Girl Scout
Gold Award
The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting; it recognizes
girls 14-17 years old who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measureable Take Action projects. Since 1916, girls have answered the call to go Gold, embodying
accomplishments and responsibility as a member of their community and the world.
730 DAYS

Girls spend on average
one to two years on
their projects.
Since 1916, over one million girls have earned the Gold Award.

A Girl Scout who has earned her
Gold Award immediately rises
one rank in any branch of the
United States Armed Forces.
The average age
of the recipient
is 17 years old.
Timeline
1916-1918: The Golden Eagle of Merit, the highest award in Girl Scouting, marked the beginning
of a long tradition of using prestigious awards
to recognize girls who make a difference in their
communities.
The Gold Award project is the culmination
of all the work a girl puts into “going gold.”
Our Gold Award earners have identified
a problem in their community (local
or global) that they are passionate
about and driven to create change.
The project is more than a good service
opportunity-it encourages girls to go
deeper into problems and places where
help is needed, with the strength to spark
and inspire worldwide change.

1940-1963: The Curved
Bar Award was the highest
honor in Girl Scouting.
1980-Present: The Girl
Scout Gold Award became
the highest award a Girl
Scout could earn and often
described as “What you
really want to be remembered for” in Girl Scouting.
1938-1940: First Class
was the highest award
in Girl Scouting.
1918-1938: The Golden
Eaglet was the highest
award in Girl Scouting.
4
STEPS to Gold
1963-1980: First Class was the highest
award. To achieve First Class meant
a girl was an “all-around” person with
skills in many fields and had a proficiency in one.

Keynote
Speaker
Dear Friends,
Kathy L. Pape has more than 30 years of experience
in the utility industry and is a nationally recognized
expert on the water and wastewater industries. She
joined American Water in July 2007 as president of
Pennsylvania American Water, the largest regulated
water utility in the Commonwealth, providing quality
water and wastewater services to approximately 2.2
million people in 390 communities.
In this role, Pape drives operational and financial
results, leads customer, regulatory and local government relationships, and is the principal external
contact for American Water in Pennsylvania. Additionally, she serves as senior vice president of
the Mid-Atlantic Division, leading the presidents of
Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
In April 2008, Governor Rendell appointed Pape to
the Sustainable Water Infrastructure Task Force.
Pape was among 30 task force members from
across the Commonwealth whom the Governor
selected to address the funding shortfall facing
Pennsylvania’s aging and deteriorated water infrastructure.
Kathy Pape
• President,
Pennsylvania American Water
• Senior Vice President,
Mid-Atlantic Division
Active in her community, Kathy provided her expertise and service to Whitpain Township as a member
and chair of its Planning Commission and as a member of its Zoning Hearing Board. She has also served
the Archdiocese of Philadelphia; Gwynedd Mercy
Academy; Pennsylvania Chapter of the National
Association of Water Companies; Pennsylvania
Business Council; Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry; Earth Conservancy; and National
Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners
(NARUC). In 2010, she was named to Central Penn
Business Journal’s “Women of Influence” list, and
was selected as one of the Northeast Pennsylvania
Business Journal’s Top 25 Women in Business in
2011.
Pape holds a B.A. from Edinboro University, a J.D.
from Dickinson School of Law and a LL.M. in Taxation from Villanova University School of Law.
The Girl Scouts we are honoring today have many
shining qualities that have gotten them here today.
They have learned how to navigate challenges using leadership skills that some have gained as early
as Daisies. These girls have a vision for what they
want their communities to be and they have the
ambition to turn that vision into a reality. They exude confidence that enables them to connect with
others to make their actions even more powerful.
When they hit a roadblock in their plans, they do
not give up. They fearlessly explore other avenues.
Acting CEO
Above all, they live by the Girl Scout Promise and
Law and use their compassion to help people at all
times. When a Girl Scout goes for the Gold Award,
she uses these skills to take community service to
an even higher level of complexity. She must identify and analyze a community problem, envision a
lasting solution to the problem, make a plan, and
organize others to implement it.
Today you will hear the stories of what the Gold
Awardees have done and are doing to make the
world a better place. This year’s 71 recipients have
contributed nearly 6,000 hours to their communities on their Gold Award projects alone. They are
the best expression of the Girl Scout experience,
showing clearly how today’s girls become tomorrow’s leaders. We congratulate each of our Gold
Award recipients, as well as the troop leaders, family members and friends who supported them.
Board Chair
Today we are also celebrating 10 graduating seniors receiving college scholarships from Girl
Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania. We congratulate the scholarship recipients and all of the people
who have supported them through their school
years.
We are already amazed at how far our Girl Scouts
have gone and we can confidently say that all of today’s awardees hold bright and promising futures.
The world is theirs and we are counting on them.
Sincerely,
6
