For scramblers, ramblers and amblers Buckden offers a wide variety of walks – from
the challenge of the Dales Way, Buckden Pike or the high fells to riverside strolls
through gentle meadows where one might catch a glimpse of a kingfisher or simply
observe the abundant animal, plant and bird life.
Facilities
Within the parish of Buckden there are three "free" houses where you can get
cheerful Yorkshire hospitality, a pint of good beer, a light lunch or well prepared
meal if you wish to dine out. A further three miles will encompass another four
hostelries at Starbotton and Kettlewell. Buckden also has a small general store-cum-tea room-cum-off
licence! In addition there is an excellent art/craft gallery; a National Trust information centre specialising in
the geography and historical development of the area around Buckden, and a delightful tea room at West
Winds situated to the rear of the Buck Inn. All footpaths radiating from Buckden end at a hostelry.

The Dales
The Yorkshire Dales region covers approximately 1,500 square miles and almost all of this is within the
Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is a rich mosaic of flower-filled meadows, high fells, heather moors and
broad-leaved woodland, scattered with stone barns, drystone walls and an abundance of waterfalls. Cradled
in the valley bottoms, stone-built villages guard centuries of history. The beauty of the Yorkshire Dales is
famed. It is a land of breathtaking scenery where rich heritage lies around every corner.
Above all it is a quiet, peaceful and unspoilt environment in which to relax and unwind. Whatever your
interest, whatever your age, you will find it a unique place to explore, discovering secrets and treasures for
many years of happy memories. If you have ever seen an episode of the popular television series 'All Creatures
Great and Small', the scenery will have impressed you as much as James Herriot's delightful stories.
Skipton, known as "The Gateway to the Dales", is guarded by magnificent Skipton Castle, which overlooks a
traditional open-air market. Visitors can follow the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, which runs through the centre of
Skipton, by walking along its towpaths, or quietly cruising on its waters in a traditional barge. The Yorkshire
Dales Cycle Way crosses the Southern Dales, along with a network of footpaths including the Pennine Way,
and the Dales Way, which follows the River Wharfe.
Wharfedale is chosen as favourite dale by many, including famous Yorkshire writer, J.B. Priestley. The River
Wharfe rushes and tumbles through a patchwork of hay meadows, drystone walls and field barns, and passes
welcoming old stone villages such as Buckden, Kettlewell and Burnsall, which blend perfectly with the
landscape. The breathtaking scenery is punctuated by imposing natural sights such as the overhanging face of
Kilnsey Crag, a popular challenge for climbers.

he village of Buckden is at the very heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park,
surrounded by National Trust land; an idyllic location for the perfect self catering
holiday cottage accommodation.
Dalegarth and The Ghyll Holiday Cottages, Buckden, are ideally situated at the head of
Wharfedale, from which to explore the whole of the Yorkshire Dales National Park with
Bishopdale, Langstrothdale, Wensleydale, and Swaledale to the north; Nidderdale and
Coverdale to the East; Littondale, Malhamdale, Ribblesdale and Dentdale to the west and of course,
Wharfedale itself , running through the village.
Dalegarth is a unique cluster of cottages, family designed, constructed and managed, set in the landscaped
grounds of an extensive old walled kitchen garden, bounded on one side by the stream known as Buckden Beck.
The Ghyll nestles at the foot of Buckden Ghyll. The three cottages are equipped to the highest standard with
special consideration given to the needs of those with restricted mobility.
In short, Dalegarth and The Ghyll represent charming country cottages of distinction.
Buckden Village
Buckden is centrally situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, 18 miles north of the busy market town of
Skipton, amidst some of the finest unspoilt countryside in England. Set beside the River Wharfe, the
surrounding limestone fells rising to over 2,000 ft, the village has a calm and spacious natural beauty.

above Buckden
Grassington, Upper Wharfedale's chief town, echoes the past with cobbled streets and intimate curio shops.
The two-week arts festival in June is a must. Lined with riverside paths, the River Wharfe runs deep and
narrow through a tight gorge called the Strid, before widening and continuing southwards to Bolton Abbey,
the heart of the Duke of Devonshire's Yorkshire estate.

Set in a former walled kitchen garden,
Dalegarth offers two types of cottage,
each with an integral garage and
central heating.
The cottages, both Type A and Type B, feature a
twin and a double bedroom, bathroom, fully
fitted kitchen (including dishwasher/freezer) and a
large lounge/dining room offering extensive views
of Upper Wharfedale.The lounges include a threepiece suite, dining suite, and an additional fully
sprung double divan sofa bed.

In addition, the Type A cottages feature a Sauna
Room attached to the downstairs bathroom, and
an en-suite bathroom to the upstairs bedroom.
The southerly facing first floor lounges have a
large double glazed sliding picture window leading
on to a balcony with dramatic views over the River
Wharfe and fells beyond.
Dalegarth cottages are registered with VisitBritain
(formerly the E.T.C.) and have been awarded a
rating of Four Stars.

Gymnasium/Games room
To the rear of Dalegarth is an indoor heated
swimming pool, a combined gymnasium/games
room, a laundry room, a video library and an
extensive patio with tables and chairs and a
barbecue. Whatever the weather, all year round
you will be able to enjoy a full and varied holiday
at Dalegarth or The Ghyll cottages.
The gymnasium appeals to all
ages and many people find it
quite invigorating... quite
rejuvenating; whilst the pool
table is enjoyed by everyone –
even the less energetic
members of the family.

Essentials: The Ghyll Cottages
o 3 cottages, 2 or 3 bedrooms.
Situated at the foot of Buckden Ghyll,
below Buckden Pike, are Heron Ghyll,
Dipper Ghyll and Swallow Ghyll
Cottages. Designed to sleep a maximum
of either 4 or 6, all are equipped to the
highest standard with special
consideration given to the needs of
those with restricted mobility.
o 2 bathrooms in each cottage.
o Sleeps 2 to 6 persons.
o Use of heated indoor swimming pool.
o National Accessible Scheme Category 2.
o VisitBritain rating: 4 stars.
Each cottage has a level main entrance
to the rear. A door and ramp leads from
the south-facing lounge onto a patio,
offering views over the village to the hills
of Upper Wharfedale beyond.
The ground floor bedroom has the option of
either double or twin beds. Off the bedroom is a
luxury en-suite bathroom, comprising toilet, wash
basin, 'Dignity' bath complete with warm air SPA
and a separate level-deck shower area with seat.
Guests' car parking is adjacent to a
covered loggia, giving access via a porch
to a comfortable lounge/dining room
with colour TV, Video, Audio Hi-Fi system
and Payphone. Video library on site.
The tiled room has underfloor heating to add to
the general feeling of comfort, whilst all other
rooms are fully carpeted and centrally heated.
From the lounge, stairs lead to a second double
(or twin) bedroom, which also has its own
bathroom. Heron Ghyll
has an additional first
floor double bedroom,
for which, if used, a
supplement is payable.
Adjoining the lounge is a well appointed kitchen,
with built in oven, refrigerator, dishwasher,
micro-wave, and food processor plus an
additional fold-away lower level work surface.

to views up Buckden Pike.
