ROBERT AND LUCILLE COWAN LEAVE A LEGACY OF LOVE Earlier this year Robert and Lucille Cowan transformed themselves into stepping stones by establishing a legacy estate gift at the UMKC School of Dentistry that will benefit future generations of UMKC graduates. W e’ve had a wonderful life,” remarked Dr. Robert Cowan on the life he and his wife, Lucille, have shared in Branson, Mo., for almost six decades. During that time they built a thriving dental practice in which he “did the dentistry” and she assisted (chairside at first, then as office manager). “Dentistry has been good to me, and I’ve tried to be good to dentistry,” observed Dr. Cowan with characteristic humility. “It has given me a stepping stone to do other things that I wanted to do with investments and other things.” Earlier this year Robert and Lucille Cowan transformed themselves into stepping stones by establishing a legacy estate gift at the UMKC School of Dentistry that will benefit future generations of UMKC graduates. At the time the Cowans’ gift to the School of Dentistry was announced to the public by UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton at the 2009 Midwest Dental Conference in March, the bequest was valued at $8.2 million. “The University and the School of Dentistry are certainly humbled by the generosity of the Cowans,” said UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton. “The Cowans’ extraordinary gift of education and opportunity will provide immeasurable returns. We thank them for their unending dedication and support, and for selecting UMKC to continue their legacy.” The Cowans asked that the gift, which will be made in the form of a bequest provision in their estate plan, be used to endow a scholarship fund to assist students at the UMKC School of Dentistry. They hope their generosity will not only assist students with their educations, but have a lasting impact on their lives. “We gave this [gift] a lot of thought,” said Dr. Cowan. “We wanted to do something that would help generations of students, not just be spent today and gone tomorrow. It would be nice if some of the students would help the school after they practice a few years and have a family and accumulate a little money; well, if they could help the school out, to pay back for their help, it’d be nice.” “I had the pleasure of visiting the Cowans at their home in Branson in late September with Dr. Nan Evanson, the school’s director of advancement,” said Dr. Marsha Pyle, dean of the UMKC School of Dentistry. “I was DR. ROBERT AND LUCILLE COWAN LEAVE A LEGACY OF LOVE 2 • Explorer Winter 2009 do than dentistry,” he said. “I have trouble with my feet, and if it wasn’t for that, I’d be down at the office doing a little bit of work right now.” Robert and Lucille met in Kansas City and married in 1951. Dr. Cowan had graduated from the University of Kansas City, School of Dentistry in 1949, worked briefly for the school’s oral surgery department, and then joined the U.S. Public Health Service to evaluate water fluoridation and fluoride application on children’s teeth. He and the team of clinicians he supervised traveled throughout the state of Missouri. During his travels he learned of a dentist who wanted to sell his “small, small practice” in downtown Branson. Dr. Cowan had worked on all the children in and around Branson, so he was familiar with the area and liked it. But, he admits, “You’re talkin’ about a man in his late 20s, and at that age you don’t know really what you want. All you know is that you need to go to work to try to make a living. We liked the river running through, and thought it was a nice area. I thought all my life that I could make anything work that I wanted to work.” Dr. MarshaPyle, dean of the UMKC School of Dentistry, visited the Cowens at their home in Branson, Mo., to personally thank them on behalf of the University for their generosity incredibly impressed by Dr. and Mrs. Cowan’s love of the school and the dental profession. The Cowans are emblematic of the very special support that our alumni have for the school and for student scholarships. Their gift will make a significant difference in the lives of the students who will be the recipients of the Cowans’ generosity.” As Dr. Cowan reflected on his career, he admitted that his dental career has been a labor of love. Even though he retired about a year ago, he still misses, at age 89, the office. “There’s nothing in the world I’d rather Dr. Felix Quiason Dr. Felix Quiason, UMKC associate professor of endodontics, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at Research Medical Center. Dr. Quiason joined the UMKC Department of Endodontic faculty in 2001, after practicing in north Kansas City, Mo., for many years. His outgoing personality and his eternal optimism and courage in the face of the daunting health challenges earned him the sincere affection and admiration of his students, colleagues and patients. “What I will remember most about Felix Quiason, and to me it will be his legacy, was how eternally upbeat that he always remained in spite of a myriad of major health problems that plagued him during the final years of his life,” said Dr. James Dryden (DDS ’66, MS ’72), chair of the UMKC Department of Endodontics. “I have made countless friends over my lifetime, and most of them have had positive personalities. But no one with whom I have been personally acquainted has had a demeanor quite like Felix. Despite having to cope with his ongoing health issues, Felix showed up for work at the school day after day. He always had a smile on his face and laughter always came easy to him. I visited him at the hospital three days before his passing. His last words to me were, ‘I’ll see you back at the school in a few days, Jim.’ He will be sorely missed by all of us at UMKC, especially in the Department of Endodontics.” Dr. Quiason was born September 15, 1942, in Manila, Philippines, and like his father became a dentist He earned his doctorate in dental medicine degree in 1964 from the University of the East, Dental College, in Manila, Philippines. Dr. Quiason and his wife immigrated to the United States in 1966. He received a DDS degree (1972) and a graduate certificate (1979) from UMKC and a master’s degree in endodontics from the University of Nebraska (1982). He is survived by Nora Quiason, M.D., his loving wife of 43 years; his mother, Felicisima G. Quiason; daughters Emilie Rottinghaus and her husband Dan, Melissa Tizon and husband Alex, and son Robert; four grandchildren, Collin, Carson, Maya and Dylan. She practices dentistry at La Clinica de Familia Dental Center in Anthony, N.M. Dr. Churchill’s husband, Chris, is an astronomer at New Mexico State University. 22 • Explorer Winter 2009 DR. JIM ELIAS DELIVERS DENTAL CARE IN ZAMBIA, AFRICA Since 1998 Jim Elias (DDS ’79), Independence, Mo., has participated in mission trips to Zambia, Africa, to deliver much needed dental care to its impoverished citizens. Dr. Elias and his mission work are featured in a GateHouse News Service article by Teresa Sheffield. According to the article, Dr. Elias was recruited by one of his patients, Charlotte Franklin, who, with her husband, Larry, operate International Children’s Missionary Enterprise, which organizes international missionary trips around the world. Over eight years, Elias estimates he has helped about 12,000 Zambians. “I think just realizing the needs that these people had. I think too as my love for God and my love for mankind grew, and I was asked by another church, the Kansas City Baptist Temple I (went back). And I did, and I did, and I did. I like going to Africa because people appreciate it more, and I hope it can happen here,” he said. “You can’t help people who don’t want to be helped. It’s just a feeling of love and sincerity, and I want it to happen here. The people are so happy, so content with so little. There are 4,000 kids, and none of them say ‘I’m bored.’ The only kids I see crying in Africa are in pain.” The complete article and photos can be viewed at: www.norwichbulletin.com/ lifestyles/health/x631636828/Christian-dentist-brings-message-healing-to-Zambia. Dr. Cowan bought the practice in the early 1950s, and he and Lucille made Branson their home. In 1957 they constructed a building that houses the dental office to this day — a half block off 65 Highway and a half block off Highway 76, better known as The Strip. At that time, though, The Strip was just a gravel road, as was the road to Springfield, Mo. Their house then, as now, was just down the street from the office. “If you can throw a rock a long way, you can hit the office from our house,” said Dr. Cowan. The Cowans have witnessed a lot of changes in Branson, most notably the blossoming of a boundless variety of entertainment venues. Even though the town has grown to where they don’t know everyone the way they used to, they think Branson is still a nice town. They have always liked to hunt and fish, and when their workdays were done, they headed for the lakes, river and forests surrounding Branson to enjoy the outdoors. They also traveled the world, going to dental meetings in Russia, China and Germany. And they’ve hunted big game together in places like Newfoundland, Manitoba, Ontario and Colorado. Last year marked their 53rd year to go on a fishing trip in Canada. “We’ve enjoyed ourselves,” said Dr. Cowan. “We didn’t cut anything short.” The Cowans certainly haven’t cut anything short in their generosity to the UMKC School of Dentistry. Their bequest is one of the largest private donations ever made to an American dental school. In recognition of the impact their gift will have on the future of the UMKC School of Dentistry, the school has named its public service and student training clinics (the entire first floor of the building) The Dr. Robert and Mrs. Lucille Cowan Center for Clinical Care. Previously, Dr. Pyle served as vice dean and associate dean for education at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. After receiving her D.D.S. degree from CWRU in 1984, she practiced privately for 11 years, while also teaching in CWRU’s clinical program. After completing a two-year fellowship in geriatric dentistry in 1991, she joined the CWRU faculty full time. She was charged with establishing the CWRU Training Center for Geriatric Oral Health, and served as its director from 1996 to 2000. I cannot adequately express how grateful I am to have the opportunity to serve the UMKC School of Dentistry as its dean. I have long been familiar with UMKC’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading dental schools. Through my involvement with the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), I’ve had the opportunity to get to know some of UMKC’s leaders, such as Dr. John Killip, assistant dean of Student Programs; Dr. Pam Overman, associate dean for Academic Affairs; and Dr. Cindy Amyot, director of Distance Education and Faculty Development. They, as well as other UMKC faculty I’ve met along the way, have always impressed me with the passion and energy they invested in their work as educators and clinicians. I’ve felt very comfortable since my 4 • Explorer Winter 2009 arrival at the UMKC School of Dentistry. CWRU School of Dental Medicine is a private institution that’s smaller than UMKC, but both schools share the same basic philosophy of education. For instance, both institutions are known for having excellent basic clinical programs that offer state-of-the-art training to their students. I’ve also noticed that CWRU and UMKC both embrace a belief system that encourages a spirit of collegiality among faculty, staff, students and alumni. It’s a spirit that recognizes that we’re all in this together, that we rise and fall as one, that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This is the spirit that I look forward to participating in as we work together to build a bright future on the school’s impressive past. Speaking of the future, we are busy preparing for the accreditation site visit that will take place in 2010. Under the leadership of Dr. Pam Overman, faculty and staff throughout the building have been working very hard to prepare first drafts of our “self-study document.” In November 2009 we will hold a mock site visit that will give us a chance to acquire external input on how we’re addressing accreditation standards. The process of conducting the self-study and the honest introspection it demands provide us with an excellent opportunity for us to assess where we are and where we want to go. To address the latter issue, we have organized a Strategic Planning Committee whose membership includes representatives from the school’s faculty, staff and alumni. They have been charged with the task of updating the school’s strategic plan that will articulate our priorities for the next five to ten years. This is an ideal time to undertake this process. The University has just completed its strategic planning process, so we have a clear perspective to guide us as we formulate our own plans for the future. I am pleased to report that our future is bright because we have so many strengths to build on. We have a clinical program that is top-notch, a research program that is the star of the entire campus, and an outreach program that is a major contributor to the University’s mission to engage with the community and provide service to our constituents and partners. Our strategic planning process is an opportunity for us to think globally as one institution in order to create a contemporary vision of the future that will enable us to capitalize on current areas of excellence where we have a niche that can grow further. For example, our research program is absolutely phenomenal. But we still must ask, where do we want to place emphasis in order to take advantage of future opportunities, such as clinical research. The quality of our clinical program is second to none, but we must continually adapt our program in response to and in anticipation of advances in dental techniques, technologies and materials. In short, we must prepare our graduates to thrive in the dental practice of today AND tomorrow. In our educational programs, we have an opportunity to capitalize on the excellence we already have established in technology and distance education. This is a time of national discussion about how dental schools deliver educational programs and how best to incorporate innovation into our curriculums. UMKC needs to participate in this discussion by examining how we deliver our programs and engage our students. How can we best convert learning objectives that our faculty thinks are important (e.g. critical thinking) into learning outcomes our students actively exhibit? Such self-scrutiny is essential to Class Notes Class Notes Class of 1950 Robert R. Puckett Sr., DDS, Topeka, Kan., is proud to say he is still kicking at age 87 and very healthy! Ray E. Zabel Dr. Dez & Ms. Bridgit Ziegenhorn our ability to remain one of the premier dental schools in the country. As we look to the future, we also have an opportunity to be a good citizen with our external partners and stakeholders. We’ll be working closely with our alumni and dental associations, both of whom have been incredibly supportive of the school. I’ve been trying my hardest to get out and meet some of the people who care so much for the school. I look forward to developing deep and lasting relationships with the school’s alumni and with area dental and community organizations. Together we can ensure that UMKC continues to graduate the best oral health care practitioners in the country. Even though I’ve been at UMKC a short time, I’ve already had the opportunity to be extremely impressed by our alumni’s generosity. I attended the annual Scholarship Recognition Dinner and was simply blown away. I don’t know of another institution that does something quite like this. It was simply amazing to see scholarship recipients and donors sitting down to dinner together and talking and getting to know one another. The evening was a powerful display of what a strong bond our alumni have with their school. I came away convinced that our students are as grateful as our alumni and friends are generous; and that when our students have become successful alumni, they will be as generous as their distinguished predecessors. In that spirit of generosity and gratitude I would like to thank the UMKC School of Dentistry community for welcoming me with such warmth and openness. Everyone has been unbelievably kind and helpful. As I said earlier, I feel comfortable here. I feel at home. Barry Daneman Moves to UMKC Foundation I n July 2009, the University of Missouri-Kansas City established the UMKC Foundation in order to centrally coordinate accountability for all the advancement efforts on behalf of UMKC and its academic units. With the advent of the new Foundation and planning for the University’s next capital campaign, UMKC has realigned advancement positions to maximize staffing, resources and expertise. As part of this realignment, Barry Daneman, the School of Dentistry’s director of Community and Alumni Relations, began devoting his time and talents to the UMKC Foundation on October 21, 2009. In a farewell message to the School of Dentistry, Daneman said, “It has been a great honor to work for the UMKC School of Dentistry, the Rinehart Foundation and the Dental Alumni Association these past 14-plus years. I’ve made many good friends and have had the opportunity to collaborate on a wide variety of interesting projects: class scholarships, continuing education programs, endowed chairs and professorships, Medicaid studies, memorials, outreach programs, renovation projects and workforce models. I have enjoyed my students in the dental ethics classes, faculty colleagues in the Department of Dental Public Health, staff colleagues from the Office of Alumni, Development and Continuing Education and alumni friends. I will treasure these years always. I cannot adequately express my thanks for having been given these opportunities.” In recognition of Barry’s contributions to the school and the profession of dentistry, Dean Marsha Pyle said, “We are eternally grateful for Barry’s many years of hard work on behalf of the school, the Rinehart Foundation and the school’s outreach programs. His good work within the school and in the community will be missed but not forgotten.” Daneman will retain some accountability for the School of Dentistry while taking on broader advancement responsibilities as an Advancement Officer for the central office. Dean Pyle said that she is working with the University’s Advancement leadership to develop an alternative staffing plan for the School of Dentistry’s Rinehart Foundation to assure that its needs continue to be met. As part of the reorganization of the school’s alumni and advancement activities, Dr. Cynthia Amyot has been asked to assist in the area. Since 2007 Dr. Amyot has served the School of Dentistry as a professor and the director of Distance Education and Faculty Development. Previously she served as director of the Division of Dental Hygiene from 1993 to 2006. She has served on the school’s faculty since earning her MS degree in dental hygiene education at UMKC in 1993. She earned her EdD degree from the University of Missouri in 2003. Dr. Amyot served as president of the UMKC Dental Hygienists’ Alumni Association in 1996-97 and served on its board from 1993 to 2007. Explorer Winter 2009 • 5 Dental Hygiene Summer Rotations Offer Real-World Experiences By Bonnie Branson, RDH, PhD, Associate Professor, Division of Dental Hygiene The summer of 2009 marked the sixth year that UMKC dental hygiene students completed summer rotations at federally qualified health centers in Missouri. Each July since 2004, dental hygiene students have participated in a two-week rotation to sites all over Missouri to deliver care. The students work in the clinics as part of the team delivering patient education, exposing radiographs and completing dental hygiene treatment. The treatment consists of all types of care, including child and adult prophies, periodontal maintenance and scale/root planing. Housing for the students is provided by the Area Health Education Centers Regional Offices. Coordinators for these regional offices also arrange for the students to participate in a community oral health activity outside the confines of the dental facility. These programs have included educational programs to special groups and career fairs. Students are supervised by the hygienists and dentists at the federally qualified health center and enjoy the opportunity to experience dentistry outside the confines of the dental school environment. The goals of the summer rotation experience include: increasing the students’ awareness of the needs of diverse populations and gaining insight into the care that is delivered in a public health setting. UMKC dental hygiene faculty visit the sites to connect with each center and determine the quality of the experience. The summer rotation program, which is an enhancement to the public health curriculum, draws students into real 6 • Explorer Winter 2009 world experiences through service learning. Service learning is a valuable teaching methodology because it engages students in an activity that is driven by learning objectives, as opposed to pure volunteerism. Specific course objectives direct the experience, so both the student and the community benefit. Students reflect on the experience through directed journaling, which are read by faculty so dialoguing can take place. Schooley became UMKC’s first 5-millon stepper in August 2009, one year after she began the program. She and her feat (or should we say feet?) were featured in an article that appeared in the August newsletter of the T.E. Atkins UM System Wellness Program. In the article Schooley confesses that she’s been an intermittent walker since age 40, but now, at 62, “I’ve never missed a day since starting the program. I put on my pedometer first thing every morning. The Dental School building is very conducive to walking, especially when the weather is too rainy, cold or hot. Eight laps around the second or third floors equal one mile.” She says that she also walks 35–40 minutes in the evening in her neighborhood. Her record for most steps in a day? 32,455! Jay Nixon held a press conference at the UMKC School of Dentistry, Tuesday morning, October 20, 2009, to discuss the implementation of Caring for Missourians, a new state program that will significantly expand educational opportunities for healthcare professionals in high-demand fields. Under the innovative grant program, UMKC will receive special funds to increase enrollment in its Doctor of Dental Surgery program by 17 students over the next four years. The UMKC School’s of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing also are receiving special funding to increase their class size. Other two- and four-year, public institutions in Missouri also are expanding their capacity for training doctors, dentists, nurses and other health care professionals through Caring for Missourians. While visiting the UMKC School of Dentistry, Gov. Nixon toured the building and met with faculty and students as well as members of the press. Explorer Winter 2009 • 9 MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF ADVANCEMENT By Nan Evanson, Ed.D., Leadership Gift Officer for the School of Dentistry It is an honor for me to serve the students and faculty of the UMKC School of Dentistry by promoting opportunities for our alumni to give back to the school. Since my arrival at the school in 2007, I have been impressed and grateful for the generosity of our alumni and community friends. We here at the school are surrounded by signs of your kindness: over $400,000 awarded annually in scholarships to our students, and other resources for faculty development, teaching awards, an outstanding general clinic, specialty clinics, and community outreach programs. The quality of these areas would not be what they are without the generous support you have given to your school. I know it may seem like we are always asking for support — it is true that, despite your generosity, our needs remain abundant. I would like to tell you about another cause that is a bit different, however. Let me explain: At the Midwest Dental Conference this coming spring, Charles Dunlap (DDS ’60) will be recognized as Alumnus of the Year. I am sure that Dr. Dunlap is known to you as an excellent teacher, mentor, and accomplished scientist and clinician. For nearly half a century he has taught and practiced oral pathology at our school. A small group of alumni has begun a campaign to raise money in Dr. Dunlap’s honor. When asked what cause he would like to have his name associated with, he responded that he was interested in a fund to help indigent patients at our clinic. Dr. Dunlap has been a steadfast contributor to our existing small indigent care fund, and he has now expressed the desire that an endowment be established to provide assistance to patients who have acute dental needs and who have no resources to pay for treatment. This fund, to be held in the Rinehart Foundation, will ensure that the compassion Dr. Dunlap shows for people 10 • Explorer Winter 2009 in need can continue after his retirement, and even after his lifetime. Charles Dunlap describes himself as a man of humble beginnings. He was born near the end of the great depression, in a small farm five miles removed from Stigler, Okla. His grandmother delivered him because a phone, hospital and doctor were not available. His father worked in a saw mill for 50 cents a day. When he was seven years old, a better job for his father took the family to Muskogee. Life became more difficult, however, when his mother died of tuberculosis soon after the move. World War II took his father to the Army and Europe, and took Charlie back to the farm to be cared for by a neighbor and his grandparents. In 1964 Charlie was offered the position of assistant professor in oral pathology at the UMKC School of Dentistry… and the rest is history. He became board certified in oral pathology in 1967 and after years of service, became president of the American Academy of Oral Pathology and eventually president of the American Board of Oral Pathology. Throughout his career, Dr. Dunlap’s passion has been the pursuit of knowledge and the sharing of it with students and fellow dentists. The school’s Faculty Practice has provided a steady stream of patients referred to Dr. Dunlap for diagnosis and treatment. He has never declined a patient, and he does not charge a fee for patients referred to him in the practice. Charlie believes that he has an obligation to use his knowledge and skill to help others. When asked why he is interested in the establishment of an indigent care fund, Charlie responds that he thinks it must be because of own beginnings. He understands hardship because he has known it. Charlie believes that his life has taught him that among all human traits that mold us and make us what we are, kindness and the desire to help others are the best measures. One who is kind to others almost invariably has the “whole package” — all the traits and attributes that make for a good person. I invite you to honor this good person by making a contribution to the Charles Dunlap Indigent Care Fund which will ensure that Charlie’s good works will continue. I hope you agree that the giving opportunity I have described is different from our usual appeals. Your gift to this fund will not only help patients who have acute dental needs and who have no resources to pay for treatment, but your gift will also honor a man who himself has given so much to so many. Thank you for your friendship and support. In the early part of this decade, a national consensus had emerged among dental professionals that excellence in American dental education must be promoted and sustained. The UMKC effort was in partnership with Our Legacy — Our Future, the American Dental Association’s ten-year national campaign for dental education. Our school’s campaign leadership identified four major challenges for the school: difficulty in recruiting faculty because of non-competitive salary structures; rising tuition for our students due to reduced state financial support; stress on our clinic and other safety net organizations due to state and federal budget cutbacks (especially for the Medicaid Program); and the complexity of contemporary dental education as research and practice introduce new technologies, methods, and materials. It had been determined at the outset of the campaign that all gifts and pledges received by the Rinehart Foundation or by the UMKC School of Dentistry between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2009 would be counted toward the overall goal of $12 million as well as the sub-goals for each of the four areas of need. The results, as of June 30, 2009, are summarized below: The funds and endowment which have been established or augmented through campaign fundraising are too numerous to list. However, a few examples are: the Robert and Lucille Cowan Scholarship, the David Moore Faculty Development Fund, the Tanaka Hawaii Professorship in Restorative Dentistry, the renovation of the orthodontic clinic, support for the Special Patient Care Clinic, and Project Ready Smile. The faculty, staff, and students of the UMKC School of Dentistry are grateful to our alumni and other benefactors who have chosen to promote excellence in dentistry by supporting our school. We owe a debt of gratitude to so many who — despite a difficult national economy which has affected so many of us — have still managed to be generous. The School of Dentistry congratulates you on a project well done! Thanks to the generosity of the UMKC School of Dentistry’s alumni and friends who have endowed 115 separate scholarship funds, the school was able to distribute 298 monetary awards (totaling $409,000) to 194 dental, dental hygiene and advanced education students. The ceremony also included the recognition of 27 students who received 32 awards from 14 regional and national scholarships. The following four scholarships were awarded for the first time in 2009: F.L. Faulconer Scholarship Fund As a salesman, F.L. Faulconer depended on his voice to earn his livelihood. He nearly lost his voice, his career and his life when he was stricken with cancer of the palate. He was referred to the UMKC School of Dentistry where he received major jaw reconstruction and was fitted for dentures. The clinical care he received at the school enabled him to continue his career and to care for his family for many more years. In gratitude for the school’s impact on his life, Mr. Faulconer made a provision for part of his estate to come to the UMKC School of Dentistry. In recognition of Mr. Faulconer’s generosity and in consultation with his son, Leonard Faulconer, the school awards this scholarship to students interested in prosthetic dentistry. This year’s distribution of the F.L. Faulconer Scholarship Fund will be awarded before December 31, 2009. G.N. and Edna McDavid Dental Scholarship Dr. Gaillard N. McDavid practiced in Fredricktown, Mo., from 1919 until two years before his death in August 1974. Dr. McDavid was the typical “old-fashioned country dentist”: his hours matched the needs of his patients, and his fees for services matched his patients’ means. The McDavid family lived a comfortable but prudent lifestyle. Dr. McDavid preferred walking to driving, and two years before his death he gave up the keys to his car, a 1947 Plymouth with only 20,000 miles on its odometer. Funds from the G.N. and Edna McDavid Dental Education Trust became available to the UMKC School of Dentistry early in the fall of 2009. This year’s distribution of the G.N. and Edna McDavid Dental Scholarship will be awarded before December 31, 2009, as one-time awards to dental students from Missouri. Annual distributions will continue to be made in the future to perpetuate Dr. McDavid’s wish to support dental education in Missouri. University Dental Study Club Scholarship The University Dental Study Club was established in the early 1970s. Its members are committed to professional development, engagement with the UMKC School of Dentistry and providing excellent oral health care. This scholarship reinforces the club members’ support of future members of the dental profession. Nominations for the University Dental Study Club Scholarship are solicited from each of the clinical Team coordinators. Recipients of this scholarship must exhibit a caring, professional and ethical demeanor and show strong restorative skills as they provide care to their patients. This year’s award was given to Adam McClellan, DDS Class of 2010 Dr. Sperry G. Zervas Scholarship Fund In 2009, Dr. Dean Zervas, a 1965 UMKC DDS graduate, established this scholarship in memory of his brother, Dr. Sperry Zervas, a 1955 UMKC DDS graduate. Sperry served with the U.S. Air Force for two years in Anchorage, Alaska. After his discharge from the military in 1957, he established his practice in Bartlesville, Okla., and practiced general dentistry there until 1966. At that time, he entered the UMKC Graduate Orthodontic Program, receiving his M.S. degree in 1968. He returned to Bartlesville to practice orthodontics until his death in 2008. He distinguished himself by serving his community and profession, while touching the lives of countless patients by creating beautiful smiles through his professional skills. His true passion and joy was the close relationships that he formed with his patients, and seeing the transformation that orthodontics created in them, not only in appearance, but in their increased self-esteem and self-confidence that resulted from treatment. He also was a devoted husband, father of two, and friend and mentor to many. This scholarship will be awarded to an entire class of residents in the UMKC Graduate Orthodontic Program to enhance their education in orthodontics. UMKC Endowed Scholarships Dr. George H.
