I am a review of last year - The Montessori School of Raleigh
I am a review of last year Alumni Events Leadership Finance Philanthropy Athletics Faculty The Montessori School of Raleigh 2012-2013 Annual Report Mission Statement The Montessori School of Raleigh is the Triangle’s modern embodiment and mindful practice of the time-proven Montessori philosophy, developing agile thinkers, poised communicators, and gracious collaborators—engineers of authentic and fulfilling lives. Dear MSR Families... The past year was simply a fantastic one for MSR. We welcomed Nancy Errichetti as our Head of School and watched our community thrive in her first year of leadership. With Nancy’s leadership, our Board of Trustees engaged in a thoughtful planning process intended to create a strategic blueprint for the next 2-3 years at the school. Our goal was clear: for MSR to be recognized as the finest Montessori school in the state of North Carolina and a national leader in Montessori education. Called “Design Thinking”, this process started with retaining the services of a professional school planning consultant to engage the entire school community in reflections about our strengths, our opportunities, and our vision for MSR. Then—guided by input from our community and informed by our School Improvement Plan, AMS Accreditation Report and extensive demographic and market analyses—a group of parents, faculty, alumni, trustees, etc. developed a detailed plan to address MSR’s top three priorities: increasing our enrollment and influence in the community, strengthening our program, and optimizing the use of our land and facilities. We are confident that we have the leader, we have the plan and we have the energy and enthusiasm in our community to shape a highly successful and secure future for MSR. BJ Stolz, President, Board of Trustees In Year Three of our development cycle and as part of our global outreach program, last year we took on a huge project for Stop Hunger Now (SHN), to help feed hungry school children around the world. Beginning in August 2012 with SHN Regional Program Manager Terry Brown, we crafted for students yearlong learning opportunities that were woven into the curriculum and tied to their service to SHN. We raised $25,000 in order to reach our goal of packaging 100,000 meals over three days in May 2013. The outpouring of pride in our community far transcended all original goals! MSR students gained a deeper understanding of global issues about world hunger, and we came together as a full community sharing our commitment to making a difference in the world. Most importantly, our alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, special friends, parents, faculty and staff, administration and Board members worked side-by-side with our students to role model what service to others really means. Hats off to MSR! Nancy B. Errichetti, Head of School I have the unique pleasure of knowing MSR from many perspectives. As a parent of three elementary students, I’ve experienced almost every classroom (except for the Middle School, and we’re looking forward to that). As stepparent of a young professional alumni, I see the effects of an MSR education well into adulthood. At MSR I’ve volunteered for dozens of parent, classroom, and event committees, and I’ve been honored to serve on the Board of Trustees as well. What impresses me most about MSR is our incredible generosity of spirit…the way we pull together to create a whole that is much, much more than the sum of its parts. Jacques Cousteau (naval officer, explorer, conservationist, filmmaker, scientist, photographer, author and researcher) described it this way: “It takes generosity to discover the whole through others. If I realize I am only a violin, I can open myself up to the world by playing my role in the concert.” Play on, MSR. Candace Covington-Olander, Secretary, Board of Trustees 3 I am your alumni Kristen Gardner was awarded a Morehead-Cain scholarship—the oldest, most prestigious merit scholarship program in the United States—which covers all expenses for four years of undergraduate study at UNC, as well as distinctive summer programs wherein scholars complete outdoor leadership training, carry out public service in the United States or abroad, conduct research at sites across the world and gain experience in private enterprise. After MSR, Kristen was a member of Broughton High’s International Baccalaureate program. She was an intern at the NC Museum of Natural Science recently, helping maintain the saltwater fish and invertebrate exhibits. Kristen plays the guitar and banjo, and is the music leader for the teen worship services at Church of the Apostles. She’ll begin her studies at UNC in 2014, after spending a gap year between Argentina learning organic farming methods, Spain interning for an environmental stewardship group and Morocco assisting to improve food security measures. In Kristen’s own words, “I consider MSR a wonderful foundation to my educational experience, and I greatly value the encouragement of independence, leadership and personal reflection that my time at MSR instilled in me.” Collin Butcher Won silver medal for World’s Best Diagnostic Technician, and his team won gold as the World’s Best Workshop Team at the 2012 Global TechMasters competition sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. The event takes place in Germany and competitors from around the world are judged on demonstrating world-class knowledge, skills and teamwork. After graduating from Enloe High, Collin spent a year at Wake Tech and had planned to attend NCSU for an engineering degree…until he found what he really loved to do. Collin’s 4.0 GPA at the NASCAR Technical Institute in Charlotte earned him an invitation to the Mercedes-Benz Elite program in Orlando, after which he joined Leith, Inc. in Raleigh. Collin faces new challenges everyday in diagnostics and in learning the new technology that Mercedes-Benz is constantly introducing. In Collin’s words, “The greatest gift I received from MSR was in discovering how things work together. One of my earliest, most vivid memories of MSR was learning about flowers. We went outside and actually took apart the flower. My manager and coworkers sometimes tell me that I think about things differently than most people.” Collin is married to Erika Grace Butcher and they have a son, Holden Chance Butcher. According to Collin, “The most important thing in life is to do what you love and love what you do.” John Dill After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, John Dill served for five years in a special operations force of the US Army. His service as an Airborne Ranger required him to maintain an exceptional level of fitness, and now he owns CrossFit Sua Sponte (www.crossfitsuasponte.com), a strength and conditioning program popular with police, military, martial artists and professional athletes. John has 2-year old twin girls who may be coming to MSR next year! Amanda Raxlin graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a BA in English and a BA in Communications. She’s a Junior Account Executive at S&A Cherokee public relations. Amanda is also a contributing writer for Cary Magazine, and Public Relations Manager for Alley Cats and Angels cat rescue. Deepti Doshi is on the cover of the 2013 TED Fellows book. In 2013, Deepti launched HAIYYA (www.haiyya.in) to create positive social and governmental change in India. 4 Johanna Stark, who was in the charter class of the Middle School, married David Goodman in Atlanta. From MSR, Johanna attended Ravenscroft and then Georgia Tech. Her husband David is an architect and the couple live in Atlanta where they compete in sprint kayaking. Johanna will complete her PhD in Chemical Engineering in May 2014. Shinik Patel graduated from Southeast Raleigh High and is a proud alum of the University of Richmond. Since joining PNC Financial Services in 2009, he has held several positions, most recently moving from Washington, DC back home to Raleigh with PNC’s acquisition of RBC Bank in 2012. Serving the Triangle region, Shinik is a Vice President in Commercial Banking, helping executives structure competitive financing for established and growing companies. In his spare time, he still plays as much golf as the weather permits! Jeremi Harrison graduated from NC State with a dual major in Education and Spanish Language & Literature. He now teaches Spanish at Southeast Raleigh High School. Pierce Clawson and Wesley Hitson have a rock and roll band called Pretty Odd. Check them out at www.reverbnation.com/prettyodd. Pierce graduated from Wakefield High and began Studio Art & Graphic Design studies at UNCGreensboro. Nihad Mansour is in her first year at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law. After MSR, she graduated from Cary Academy and with Honors from UNC-Chapel Hill. At UNC, Nihad co-founded Moneythink-UNC, a student organization teaching financial literacy to high school students. She’s been to Panama with UNC’s first Human Rights Global Brigade and was an intern teacher for Breakthrough New York serving high potential, low-income students. Nihad plans to pursue a career in International Law. Viraj Doshi was named as one of the top 10 field managers for the Obama presidential campaign. Learn more about Viraj in the featured alumni video. Mikaela Saccoccio ’05 graduate from the College of William and Mary with a BA in Women’s Studies and Dance. She recently performed in Brigadoon with Burning Coal Theatre in Raleigh. Mikaela reports that her brother Torin ’08 is a freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill. Molly Cruse competes throughout the region with her horse, Oakley, in Equestrian Jumping events. A junior at St. Mary’s High School, Molly is on the varsity Cross Country and Track teams. She made it to the State Finals last year and is hoping to do the same this season. Louise and Gabin Gehl, with their parents Eric and Michele, stopped by MSR to visit while in the States. Both Louise and Gabin adjusted very well to the schools in Paris, and the family is thriving in France… though Louise and Gabin miss their friends here at MSR! Share your update at www.msr.org/alumni 5 I am eventful FALL FESTIVAL October 2012 Nothing but sunshine and smiles! Tina Stevens, Susan Stephens and Krystin Knox raised the bar for Fall Festival fun with exciting new food vendors, a midway seating area, and a DJ to rock the party, complete with karaoke. Chili masters Jeremy Hile-Hoffer and Graham Holmes took first and second place for their culinary creations, “3 Alarm Chipotle BBQ Chili” and “Thai Me Up and Beat Me Down Chili.” Fourth Annual Miners Golf Tournament October 2012 Even a little rain could not dampen the high spirits of this group! Congratulations to the first place team Randy King, Scott Cobb, Jared Edens and Doug Jeremiah, the second place team David DeLuise, Dan Stefureac and Jim Sucky, and the third place team Shinik Patel, Paul Ingersoll, Paul Fogleman and Craig McAllister. Welcome, MSR’s fantastic female foursome! Grandparents & Special Friends Day May 2013 Students and teachers welcomed a record number of grandparents and special friends for a morning of classroom observation and collaboration. Thank you to all the guests who came from near and far, to be part of the MSR tradition of including and recognizing the importance of grandparents and special friends in the lives of MSR students. 6 FALL FESTIVAL THANKS: ALL the volunteers! Half of our meals went to Nicaragua through the ORPHANetwork’s 22 feeding programs that serve some of the poorest children in Nicaragua. The other half went to the Dominican Republic through CitiHope. With 42% of the population below the poverty line, food shortage is prevalent throughout the Dominican Republic. CitiHope’s director says, “We consider this not to be ‘charity’ but a real investment in humanity. The school and orphanage programs help our country create future responsible citizens that contribute to society. These children come from families that cannot supply even one meal a day for their children and don’t understand the purpose of education. So the motivation comes from the food! These SHN donations are a defining component that heals a nation, multi-dimensionally.” Bringing the World Home May 2013 Thank you to Stephanie Deming and Rebekah Holmes for creating MSR’s first Tent Event! Held on the Middle School’s 40 acres of pristine wooded beauty, with a farm-to-table feast including wine and beer from around the world, the Tent Event was jam-packed with casual fun sharing good food, drink, dance and camaraderie. Net proceeds of $51,969 seeded a new endowment fund dedicated to continuing education and specialized training of faculty and staff, including Montessori certification and other workshops, seminars and conferences. The next Tent Event is coming in 2016; meanwhile plan on the Gala in 2014 and the Montessori Idea Exchange (MIX) in 2015. ig h le es Ra o nt Y ome M Special thanks to Ararat Import Export Co., LLC (Heather Eberhardt & Edgar Vardanian) the Wol g d in H Thanks cont. Through self-directed engagement with MSR’s embracing culture, inherently interdisciplinary curriculum, and purposefully prepared environments, students fully inhabit the study of their personal fascinations. Implicitly and explicitly guided by expert teachers toward individual mastery of evolving social, emotional, and academic lessons, they learn the habits of mind that lead to deep focus, discernment, understanding, and maturity from their earliest years. MSR’s multi-age classroom experiences inspire teachers and students to alternately act as instructor and pupil, leader and follower, ultimately cultivating students’ ownership of their distinct self-worth and appreciation of the inherent worth of others. From this effective and encompassing preparation, Montessori School of Raleigh graduates advance with serene self-assurance to their next schools and into adulthood as agile thinkers, poised communicators, and gracious collaborators— docents of their own learning and engineers of authentic and fulfilling lives. 7005 Lead Mine Rd.
