MuskieFirst's Steve Worrall has agreed to sanction, on the MuskieFirst web site, a forward-thinking category to recognize and maintain the World Record for released muskies. Today's conservation minded Muskie anglers overwhelmingly believe that a super fish need not be killed to be recognized by the angler's peer's, if accurately documented. MuskieFirst has "commissioned" (pro-bono) Muskie Historian Larry Ramsell, two term past President of Muskie's, Inc. International, to develop the guidelines for this program using his vast muskie record knowledge and data base of very large kept and released muskellunge. Ramsell, author of three editions of "A Compendium of Muskie Angling History", developed the world record program as World Record's Secretary for the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame (NFWFHF) in the 1970's, and was for 30 plus years, the Hall's World Record Advisor. Ramsell also served as a Representative of the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) for 16 years for Muskie related matters. He is currently the Founder and Chairman of the Modern Day Muskellunge World Record Program (www.modernmuskierecords.org), although this MuskieFirst release program will be a separate entity. This program came about after a monster Muskie was caught and released on Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota on November 25th, 2015, by Dominic Hoyos fishing with Dean Block. The giant fish measured 55 inches long on a proper bump (measuring) board and had an amazing girth measurement of 30 inches, properly taken with a soft measuring tape around the fattest part of the fish's body. The manner and professionalism of documenting this great catch triggered the motivation to develop this long desired release world record program. These two anglers set the bar of documentation extremely high with great photographs of the measuring of length and girth and full body photo shots from different angles, as well as taking a video of the actual live release of this magnificent fish. While the exact weight of the released Muskie will never be known, Ramsell spent several days researching fish formulas on the Internet and reviewing four more prominently known formulas for calculating the weight of a muskellunge using length and girth. None of the known formulas were considered accurate enough to be used as they were, so Ramsell used his data file of recently captured, weighed and released and captured and kept muskies in the weight caliber range of the Hoyos/Block fish to modify a known formula to more closely conform to the known fish weights in this data base. This new formula, now known as "The Modified Crawford Formula" (L X G/25 minus 8) is simplistic in its use and extremely accurate throughout the data base range of weights used (from 53 to 61.25 pounds) without under stating fish weight. In addition, over stating of fish weight was extremely minimal with this new formula on this data base, ranging from +.16 pounds to +.68 pounds or .29% to 1.1% of actual fish weight. None were under stated, a previous problem with the original formula, where the "minus" number was 10. The "Mille Lacs Queen"(http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=106545&posts=100&start=1) will take its place as the MuskieFirst World Record Muskie Release and the weight "estimate" will be listed at 58.00 pounds. It is the only known large Muskie release to be so completely documented to date. Congratulations to the team of Dominic Hoyos and Dean Block on a tremendous accomplishment! World Release Record requirements: You asked for it and now you've got it! Steve noted that I would chime in with much more detail, although there isn't really a lot more to detail. Quite simply, to qualify one only need to capture, DOCUMENT FULLY as did Dean and Dominic, a giant that calculates to over 58 pounds using the "Modified Crawford Formula" (L X G/25 -8). This formula is easy to use quickly, and is as near accurate as humanly possible for fish of this caliber without understating fish weight. Nothing is perfect in this regard and it is still an "estimate", but it is an estimate that will be the same for all, based on fish measurement. Proper, commercial bump (measuring) boards must be used for length measurement and a soft tape for girth measurement that is readable in a photograph. Obviously photographs equal to or greater than those obtained by Dean and Dominic are required, i.e., distant and close ups of both measurement and the close ups must be readable as well as a good shot of the fish being held...Dean and Dominic set the bar very high in this regard and left no doubt of the mammoth size of their fish. And here is what I think you will find to be an interesting kicker; Should there be any questions or concerns of future contenders, YOU, the registered members of the MuskieFirst forum, will in effect, be the program Committee and will vote thumbs up or thumbs down on a questionable entry! When a friend first called and asked me if we wanted to get involved in establishing a release world record, I said "Absolutely not! Are you out of your "frigging" (or something like that) mind?" But after stewing on it for a couple of days, I could see that there just might be a way to make it work on released muskies; something the majority have been clamoring for, for years. And here we are...we hope you all approve and that this program will continue to save untold numbers of giant muskies, while at the same time giving them their just recognition... Larry Ramsell Your current World Record Muskie Release. “The Mille Lacs Queen” 55”x30” UNOFFICIAL?? BUT I think this is the biggest MMC Musky of the year! Kyle Savino 51.5” musky! CASH BAR Bob Taylor 11/12/2015 Central Illinois Musky’s BIOGRAPHY IMTT Vice President Has won several IMTT Tournaments during the last decade and most recently the fall 2015 IMTT Championship on the Fox Chain by going against the norm by (small baits best on the chain) using big baits, 10" Jakes and a Daredevil. That's right, a spoon won it! GENERAL LIKES/TIPS Cortland line 80-100lb 180 lb Flouro Carbon leaders for throwing rubber, less tangles and no bent wire leaders, the invisibility really means nothing to him. Doesn't see much difference in fish production using flouro vs wire. During fall turnover conditions on any lake when it gets ugly: Bob says go shallow where turnover doesn't take place. Some fish will always remain shallow. Clear lakes natural colors Perch based forage lakes - Best color: Firetiger FAVORITE LAKES Overall: 1) McMaster 2) Evergreen 3) Prairie 4) Bannermarsh 5) Spring By Season: Spring - 1) Spring Lake, Evergreen 2) Mid Summer - McMaster, Prairie, 3) Late Summer thru fall - Prairie, Evergreen. Many of these lakes have special waterfowl restrictions, and closures to fishing. McMaster closed to all fishing. Prairie morning hours closed to fishing McMaster Lake - 160 acre gem of a lake with ultra clear water and visibility to 25'. Points, islands, and 15' weed lines. Lots of deep timber and shoreline lay downs which all hold fish. 40'-55' drop offs common. The shallow area of the lake has lots of small fish in the weeds, but if you want a large fish stay in the basin area. He says there's a fish in every lay down, they just don't always come out, but there there. Keep coming back to all your good spots or marked fish. Timing is everything sometimes. GOOD SPOTS: North end 15' weed lines. West side bays 15' weed line. The lake has 50" class fish. Bob has seen a bunch and witnessed a few caught. Lost a 50+ near the dam on a black/orange pounder. BEST COLORS: crappie, black/orange LARGE BAITS: 10" Jakes, get them down 10-12' and twitch it the rest of the way in. Mag dawgs do well and pounders once in a while. Jerk them up and down rather than side pulls. The lake is closed during waterfowl season, opens back up February 2. Prairie Lake - COLORS: black/orange rubber, bull dawgs, medusas. This is his favorite fall lake. Good chance at. 48"+ Muskie. September to ice up, best lake in Illinois. Bannermarsh Lake - 2nd best fall lake till ice up. Evergreen Lake - Thickest muskies in Illinois. GOOD SPOT: Under the Power lines, there is usually a huge weed flat and holds a lot of muskies. It didn't grow for some odd reason in 2015. Hopefully it will be back. Fox Chain - fish will hang out on that shallow sand bar between Katherine and Channel. Kinkaid Lake - in the springtime when the water is muddy, spinner baits worked slowly.
