CLASSIFIED AWARDS BANQUET
This year’s theme for the classified awards banquet held on the evening of
April 15 at SeaCliff Country Club was school spirit. Celebrated that evening
were over 115 honorees as they were honored for their years of service with
certificates and pins. A record number of certificated and classified staff
(approximately 225) had the opportunity to spend a relaxed time with each
other, win raffle prizes, congratulate and cheer for honorees, and be served a
wonderful meal. Sheryl Engstrom (M) expertly acted as MC and also worked
with the committee on the raffle prizes. All Board members and Personnel
Commissioners were in attendance and participated in the program to present
welcome/closing remarks or awards.
Many attendees went home with a raffle prize during the evening. For example,
Jeff Davis (MOT) won $50 donated by SchoolsFirst and so did Barbara
Skulavik (FV); Nancy Wikes (FNS) won a $20 gift certificate for Sam’s Club;
Raul Ruiz (E) won two tickets for South Coast Repertory Theatre; Susan West
(HB/APA) won dinner for two at Duke’s; and Jeanne Orr (WOCCSE) won two
tickets to Huntington Beach Playhouse.
The banquet committee was comprised of Lynn Bergman (AS/C), Carol Carser
(Vv), Sheryl Engstrom (M), Lori Levasheff (HB), Shirley Marx (W), Anne Myer
(DO), Virginia Turner (E), Rachel Villela (FV), Joyce Walder (HB), and Anne
Westrup (OV).
CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
Superintendent Van Riley announced the Classified Employee of the Year award
at the Classified Awards Banquet on April 15 at SeaCliff Country Club. Nominees for
the award were Don Brown (E), Jeff Davis (MOT), Diane Ehlers (DO), Linda Elsner
(W), Lupe Miramontez (OV), Eva Mossembekker (FNS), Tonie Procter (HB),
Irina Protsenko (FV), Wanda Shobeiri (M), Huong Tran (AS), Diana Villalpando (Vv),
and Brandon Villegas (Inclusion).
Dr. Riley had the honor of presenting a beautiful plaque to Jeff Davis, Bus Dispatching
Supervisor, MOT, and Classified Employee of the Year, 2009-2010. Congratulations,
Jeff!

NEWS & NOTES
Insurance
Website Update
Take a look at the Insurance website! It’s been updated with all the new forms and telephone numbers for the 2010 benefit year. There is also general information about our plans,
helpful hints regarding Anthem, the Rx mail order program and much more! We welcome you
to go online and see what’s new.
The new healthcare reform has given rise to many questions about the district’s benefit
plan(s). Rest assured the Insurance Department will notify employees of any changes to plan
eligibility, Section 125, etc., as we confirm them through our carriers and vendors. We want
to ensure all our notifications are timely, accurate, and in compliance with the new law and
appreciate your patience.
Change of Dependent Status
If you have a change to your dependent status (i.e., marriage, divorce, birth, death,
domestic partner) you will need to notify the Insurance Department within 30 days of
the event. Otherwise, you will have to wait until open enrollment in October with an
effective date of November 1. Please contact the Human Resources Department for
a change packet so you can make the necessary beneficiary additions or changes. The
Insurance Department will also need a copy of your marriage and/or birth certificate.
Helpful Tips
Ask your doctor to prescribe generic medications. They cost only $5 for a 30-day
supply or $5 for a 90-day supply when you order through the mail order program,
NextRX.
If your college dependent goes to school in California, he/she can select a primary
care physician close to school. It saves out-of-pocket expenses: $15 co-pay versus a
$35 co-pay for emergency room visits. Please contact “Guest Membership Program”
(1-800-827-6422).
Check the Anthem website (www.anthem.com/ca) for formulary and provider monthly
updates. Go to their website and click on “Formulary” or “Find a Doctor” to check
status.
The Anthem customer service line for medical and pharmacy can assist you with most
of your questions. If you have questions about a claim or process, please call the
Anthem customer service number on the back of your I.D. card (1-800-288-6921)
If a prescription is being denied or delayed, try calling the Anthem’s pharmacy
number (800 700-2541) for assistance.
As you obtain any type of medical treatment and Anthem has been billed, you will
receive an explanation of benefit letter (EOB) in the mail that explains what was
charged, how much Anthem paid, and what you are obligated to pay under our plan.
This is a valuable resource especially if a medical facility or doctor asks for more
out-of-pocket expenses than required by contract.
