THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2 EXCLUSIVE RECEPTION 6:00 P.M................Reception by Invitation The Private Bank of Bank of America is proud to be the lead corporate sponsor of the San Diego Jewish Book Fair for the third year in a row. Manuel Castilla, Greater San Diego Private Bank Market Executive and San Diego Center for Jewish Culture Board Member will host his fellow SDCJC Board Members and benefactors for an evening with author Joseph Kanon. To learn more about The Private Bank, please visit their website at www.bankofamerica.com/privatebank/ EVENING AUTHOR LECTURE 7:30 P.M................Joseph Kanon, The Good German and Alibi: A Novel Joseph Kanon joins us before the movie premiere of The Good German, starring George Clooney. Kanon’s gripping thrillers set a powerful love story and an intriguing mystery against a palpable historical moment, thus revealing the ambiguities of human relationships and the nature of moral responsibility. They demonstrate the complications of morality—a secret may not be secret, a lie isn’t a sin, and murder might be acceptable. Each novel begins with a place that suggests the story– the Manhattan Project’s Los Alamos in late WWII, post-apocalyptic pockmarked 1946 Germany, 1947 Venice shell-shocked by the nearness of evil, and 1950’s Washington during the McCarthy Red Scare. Kanon probes the “hinge of the 20th century,” a pivotal time when events created the world we’ve inherited. On the eve of a controversial Supreme Court nominee vote, Ellen’s former lover — conservative journalist Greg Hunter — delivers incendiary documents that could alter history. They blast away hackneyed stereotypes and offer a hilariously moving collection of lessons in assuaging guilt. Balancing the obligations of heritage with their individual needs and interests, the writers capture all that is complicated and wonderful about being a Jewish woman at the dawn of the 21st century. Irene and husband Leon perished in Auschwitz in 1942. But daughters Denise and Elizabeth were hidden along with the suitcase containing the unfinished manuscript, written in miniscule barely-legible ink-saving handwriting. Transported to freedom after the war, Suite Française is a gifted account of foreign occupation, history written as it occurred, imaginatively evoking chaos, fear, humiliation, and courage. Daughter Denise Epstein will join us to share her mother’s, and her own testament to occupied France. Patriarch Ben Eisenstadt was the short order cook who invented the sugar packet and Sweet’N Low, converted his Brooklyn cafeteria into a factory, and amassed the great fortune that destroyed his fractious Jewish clan. Using those pink packets as a metaphor, Ben’s disinherited grandson Rich Cohen paints a dysfunctional portrait of the American dream that, in his family’s case, was as devoid of nourishment as any artificial sweetener. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8 EARLY MORNING AUTHOR LECTURE 8:00 A.M...............Douglas Century, Barney Ross, Jewish Encounter Fighting his way out of Chicago’s Jewish ghetto, Barney Ross began boxing to earn money to free his siblings from an orphanage. He earned three world titles, joined the Marines to defeat compulsive gambling, won a Silver Star, battled morphine addiction, and ran guns for the nascent Jewish state. This compilation of letters plumbs the depths of Jewish knowledge and answers the questions disaffected Jews have sought for decades. The correspondents show us why Jews are drawn to other faiths and what can draw them back. 10:00 A.M.............Devyani Saltzman, Shooting Water: A Memoir of Second Chances, Family and Filmmaking At the age of 11 when her parents divorced, Devyani Saltzman was forced to choose between her Jewish American father and her Hindu Indian mother. You Shall Be Holy distills over 3,000 years of Jewish teachings on improving one’s character to become honest, decent and just. In a time of encroaching darkness, this gift to humankind demonstrates that the light of Torah leads to a life of wholeness while advancing humanity and civilization. Says Sir Jonathan Sacks: “Read it and you will be inspired. Live it and you will be transformed.” This outstanding contribution to understanding Jewish ethics has relevance for people of all faiths.
