RTP ACCESSIBILITIES BACKGROUND
 Public service mission: RTP, as a public broadcaster, should provide the
access to it’s contents in the regular broadcast to the disabled people;
 RTP should garantee the minimum number of hours proposed by the
multiannual plan released by the Portuguese regulator (ERC) in 2014 in the
following accessibilities services:

 The first accessibility service provided by RTP;
 Service is available in pre-recorded and live contents
(magazines, entertainment and news programmes);
 In the present, almost 85% of the programmes in RTP1 have SL
in the period 9h00  21h00 (during the week);
 In 2015, RTP provided more than 11 000 hours of content with SL in all the
RTP chanells.

 Service available only in RTP website, in the accessibilities area;
 Two independent players : both players can be used in full screen mode;
 In 2015, RTP provided 2 509 hours of contents with SL in all RTP channels.

 Only for the programmes spoken in Portuguese;
 Prepared and automatic subtitles

Prepared subtitles: fictional, documentaries and cultural programmes

Automatic subtitles: live news programmes
 In 2015, RTP provided more than 5 134 hours of content
with Teletext Subtitles in RTP1, RTP2 and RTP International (Europe).
SUBTITLING IN RTP PLAY (ON DEMAND)
 The most recent access service in RTP;
 Available in RTP Play (multiplatform
- desktop, smartphones, tablet… )
 Service without major costs for RTP: the subtitle file used for broadcasting
is the same that is used online;
 In 2015, RTP provided around 560 hours of contents with subtitles
in RTP Play

AUDIO DESCRIPTION
 Only Portuguese fictional and documentaries contents
 First experiences in 2003 and the regular broadcasting started in 2007
 Transmission - two different methods:

Through MW Antena 1 radio channel at the same time the tv
programme is on air (since 2004)
DVB–T – first experiences started in august 2013
 In 2015, RTP broadcasted audio description for the first time in RTP2 .

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY…

Mid 90’s – First TV programme with Portuguese Sign Language
•
1998 – RTP signs the first protocol for the implementation
of teletext subtitles in RTP programmes

2003 – First experience with audio description in RTP
•
2007 – RTP broadcasts audiodescription regularly in RTP1
•
2008 – The first experience with an automatic subtitle system
•
2011 – SL Double Screen is implemented in RTP
website
•
2013 – First tests with subtitles in RTP Play
