Sitaonair selected by Rolls-Royce to simplify
collection of engine health monitoring data

R
G
olls-Royce has selected SITAONAIR’s AIRCOM® FlightMessenger
to collate and distribute Engine Health
Monitoring (EHM) data from its engines,
which fly on over 6,000 aircraft and
collectively operate for over 100-million hours per year. As part of its 24/7
monitoring service, Rolls-Royce will use
the EHM data distributed by FlightMessenger to anticipate any maintenance
needs and maximize the operational life
of its engines.
Rolls-Royce engines intelligently collect and analyse data during flight. This
data is then transmitted to Rolls-Royce
to support its TotalCare® Service Solutions. Across the engine fleet this data
amounts to thousands of messages per
day. Rolls-Royce wanted a single system
to receive and distribute these messages
to its analytics and operations teams.
FlightMessenger from SITAONAIR was
selected to meet this demand.
FlightMessenger is an integral
component of a suite of products
based on the AIRCOM® Platform,
which has been adopted by over 100
airlines to host and process important
data points for their flight operations.
The service lives alongside AIRCOM®
FlightTracker and FlightPlanner. The
technology enables the processing of
aircraft data in a harmonized, central
and secure way, allowing airlines and
industry manufacturers to improve
operational efficiencies.
“Operational engine data provides
both specific details to enable us to
anticipate any maintenance needs with
individual engines, and information that
allows us to track performance trends
across all our engine types,” said Nick
Ward, Rolls-Royce, Product Manager, Pre-

dictive Equipment Health Management.
“With over 400 airline and leasing
customers with engines fitted on thousands of aircraft, we have to manage
billions of data points on-board per
flight. FlightMessenger gives us the ability to receive and distribute transmitted
summaries of all that information in
the most efficient way. We then apply
our analytics and draw insights from
this data to provide our customers with
informed decisions that improve their
operations.”
AIRCOM® FlightMessenger is hosted
in SITA’s dedicated Air Transport Industry Cloud, a global infrastructure that
is connected to 380 airports, 17,000 air
transport sites, and 15,000 commercial
aircraft.
“The aviation industry is facing
several challenges relating to data from
new-generation aircraft, and this new
agreement with Rolls-Royce cements SITAONAIR’s position as a trusted provider
capable of supporting every aspect of
aircraft connectivity,” said David Lavorel,
CEO of SITAONAIR.
“By optimising the collection of data,
Rolls-Royce and airline engineers will be
able to organise the maintenance and
servicing of their engines more efficiently to make better use of the aircraft’s
time on the ground.”
The AIRCOM® Server Platform lies
at the heart of SITAONAIR’s connected
aircraft strategy. Through the neutral
and sensitive data processing platform,
SITAONAIR’s integrated applications
play a key role in delivering real value
through a more effective transmission
of aircraft data across multiple fleet
types, not only to airlines but the wider
aviation industry.
EE has entered into a global distribution agreement between GEE’s
Entertainment in Motion and The
QYOU, a leading provider of curated

Aircraft maintenance needs high-tech lift-off
D
ESPITE rapid innovation in the
aviation industry over the last few
decades – from advanced aerodynamics and composite materials to making
planes lighter yet stronger – the technology to support on-ground engineers
maintaining and certifying aircraft is
still stuck in the 20th century.
In the final two decades of the last
millennium, coinciding with the advent
of the Internet, rapid advances have
been made in front-end aviation, such as
dynamic pricing, slicker marketing and
online bookings.
Low-cost carriers (LCCs) are on the rise,
particularly in Asia. Other commercial
aircraft – significantly bigger than previous models, and carrying more passengers or cargo – are made of sophisticated
composites that help reduce fuel consumption, and fly with smart computers
and avionics on board.
Despite these advances, maintenance,
repair and overhaul (MRO) work is largely stuck in the 20th century. Engineers
on the tarmac and in the hangars still
inspect aircraft largely in the same way
as they did decades ago. A great deal of
certification is still done on pen and paper. Parts and logs are checked manually
after landing and before take-off.
Airlines for America and GEE launch dashboard detailing flight (MRO)
operation at U.S. airports
A
irlines for America (A4A), the
industry trade organization for the
leading U.S. airlines, today launched a
new interactive data dashboard designed to provide the traveling public
with access to aggregated flight operations information for U.S. airlines and
airports across the country. The dashboard, displayed at airlines.org, was
produced in partnership with Global
Eagle Entertainment Inc. (GEE) and will
provide the current operation status for
the top 30 U.S. airports by passenger
volume.
A4A partnered with GEE to develop
this dashboard as a resource for industry
partners and others who have a need for
aggregated on-time performance data
at the airport level or based on current
weather patterns.
The dashboard, tapping into GEE’s
unsurpassed aviation data analytics
capabilities, is complete with scrollover maps, real-time flight departures,
completions, cancellations, on-time per-
www.mrobusinesstoday.com
formance and weather conditions at the
national and local airport level. This new
resource also provides a detailed, rolling
30-day analysis of completed and canceled flights. GEE’s solution will enhance
this offering by adding current analysis
tools of all U.S. flight operations.
“Weather conditions can change
quickly and have a significant impact
on U.S. airlines and the 2.2 million
passengers they serve every day across
the globe” noted John Heimlich,
Vice President and Chief Economist for Airlines for America.
“Airline passengers, airlines
and airports now have the most
reliable and current information
about how potential weather
disruptions are impacting travel
at a specific airport or across an
entire region of the country.”
“Global Eagle’s operations
solutions and analytics business
is built on our ability to provide
real-time, in-depth analysis of increasing amounts of big data produced
across the aviation industry,” said Bernard Asare, Vice President, Connected
Aircraft Solutions for GEE. “This is a
powerful and unprecedented approach
to data analytics, and we anticipate
the A4A dashboard becoming a go-to
resource for those in the industry and
policy-makers who want to be better
armed with information.”

Seabury Solutions adds Amaszonas Líneas Aéreas
Group to its growing alkym customer base
S
eabury Solutions, a subsidiary of
Seabury Group and a leading global
aviation software development and
consultancy company, announced that
it has welcomed Amaszonas Líneas
Aéreas Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay
to its growing global customer base.
The three-airline group recently went
through the “GO LIVE” phase of the
industry-leading Alkym® / Aircraft Management and Control System (“Alkym”),
an integrated modular solution designed
to optimize aircraft technical operations.
Amaszonas Líneas Aéreas Group
President Sergio Urioste remarked:
“The requirement to create order and
organize the management and control
of the group inventory combined
with the maintenance planning and
control drove the initial needs for
a new MRO IT solution.” Based on
that premise, the group started an
assessment process of the different
software solutions alternatives. “It
was very important for the group to
arrange and integrate the different
areas of Maintenance Organizations of
the group’s companies,” added Urioste.
“With that purpose in mind, we started
a study to evaluate the solutions. This
process concluded that Alkym was the
best option because of the application

der the program, Philippine Airlines will
have one wireless IFE-installed aircraft
returned to service every day.
“This agreement with a worldwide
aircraft connectivity leader such as
SITAONAIR capitalizes on our growth to
provide operational support to customers around the world,” says AeroMod
President Gary Girard.
Market analysis by AeroMod reveals that
only 13 percent of non-U.S. airlines have
wireless IFE fully deployed. Despite this, a
recent SITA survey of passengers worldwide showed IFE is now more commonly
functionalities and the experience of
the company.”
The project, completed during the
months of June and July, was delivered
by the Seabury Solutions project team
on time and within budget. “Since the
implementation until now, we have
received assistance and the necessary
support to implement Alkym with high
level of professionalism and dedication,”
further commented Urioste.
“We are pleased to have Amaszonas
Lineas Aereas Group among our
customers. We know the thorough work
and analysis they made to assess the
diverse options existing in the market
and we are proud to know they chose
our solution Alkym,” said Seabury
Solutions Vice President Sales LATAM
Eng. Manuel Roché.
This announcement brings the
Alkym customer base to more than 80
aviation clients around the globe. “It is
yet another example showcasing how
Alkym continually proves to be the “goto” option in the Caribbean, Central and
South America,” concluded Roché.
consumed via Wi-Fi on a personal device,
rather than on the aircraft’s seat-back
screen (46% vs 44%, with 10% using both).
Additionally, two thirds (65%) of passengers
would choose to access it via their own
devices if wireless IFE was available.
Improving the customer experience is
a key driver for commercial airlines, and
wireless IFE systems allow a wide range
of content to be made available directly
to passengers’ personal devices. SITAONAIR’s system delivers reliability and
cost savings as well as easy installation
and maintenance. Now with AeroMod
rapid installations, these products can be
rolled out across an entire airline’s fleet in
a matter of weeks. All combine to make
an especially appealing fit for airlines.
“86% of passengers take a smartphone
onto a plane and they would prefer to
also use them to access IFE. These networks therefore need to be highly robust
in order to deliver HD quality video to all
passengers,” said David Lavorel, CEO of
SITAONAIR. “AeroMod has an enviable
track record for installations that are both
of exceptional quality and are turned
around quickly, getting the planes back in
the air as soon as possible.”

Series of AMOS go-lives for
Avianca Holdings
S
wiss-AS, in cooperation with Lufthansa Systems Americas, is pleased
to announce the recent series of go-lives
of the Avianca Holdings Airlines. This
significant implementation of AMOS
across the whole group started in 2013
and AMOS is now used by 7 subsidiar-
ies of Avianca Holdings in Central and
South America. Only Avianca Ecuador
remains to cut over and will do so soon
to complete the whole group.
The AMOS multi-entity functions
have been designed for airline groups/
holdings which intend to share one
AMOS productive environment while still
keeping the financial data of each entity
of the group separate. Thanks to the AMOS
multi-entity functions the individual
subsidiaries of Avianca Holdings are
able to track their own financial data,
in one common AMOS environment
and are thereby compliant with EASA,
FAA and local rules. Also, the AMOS
multi-entity functions allows simplified
intercompany transactions between the
different Avianca entities, such as the
selling, loaning or exchange of parts. The
maintenance, and multi-entity functions

Engineering System) to the French business class airline, La Compagnie.
The contract represents Commsoft’s first
direct customer in France and OASES will
support La Compagnie’s operations for its
current fleet of two Boeing 757-200s.
Commsoft signed the deal licensing
the Paris-based airline for five concurrent
users, starting immediately and
following strong competition from other
suppliers. La Compagnie’s OASES licence
covers a number of engineering and
maintenance modules. Its OASES site
is hosted on Commsoft’s private cloud
and the chosen modules include core,
airworthiness, planning, materials and
line maintenance control.
Nick Godwin, Managing Director
of Commsoft, commented: “We are
delighted to be awarded this OASES
contract by one of France’s most
exciting up-and-coming business class
airlines. Our highly sophisticated MRO
IT system is trusted the world over and
we are looking forward to working
with La Compagnie to ensure optimum
performance of its fleet.”
Yann Poudoulec, EVP Technical
Director, added: “We found OASES to be
a very smart system with a lot of very
practical functions that are not always
present on legacy systems and the
www.mrobusinesstoday.com
human interface is very intuitive. Thanks
to the great support of the Commsoft
team, the implementation and transfer
of the fleet was done in less than two
months after signature of the contract, all
changes were audited and fully approved
by the French CAA. Commsoft shares the
same business ethic as La Compagnie,
offering flexible commercial terms with
excellent business value. The overall
combination of features makes OASES
a product very much in line with La
Compagnie’s spirit: a strong product at an
affordable price.”
OASES currently serves more than
100 aviation customers worldwide,
ranging from national carriers and large
third-party maintenance providers to
small independent operators. It is a
fully integrated MRO IT system that is
crucial for maintaining effective aviation
maintenance and engineering operations
for airlines, CAMOs and associated
organisations.
La Compagnie was formed two years
ago, following the creation of French
aerospace company, Dreamjet SAS, the
year before. Based in Le Bourget in Paris,
La Compagnie offers low-cost business
flights from London Luton and Paris
Charles de Gaulle Airports to New York
City’s Newark Liberty International
Airport. Both Boeing 757-200 aircraft
can carry up to 74 passengers in an
all-business class cabin with seats that
convert to angled flat beds.

Making it first: The collaborative process
of making a new engine come to life
Embraer Executive

ranking in AIN’s
2016 Product
E
G
E Aviation is well known for
being a world-leading provider
of jet and turboprop engines and
components, but where do we get our
start? How is the very first engine in a
product line assembled?
“Building an engine for the first time
like the GE9X FETT (first engine to test)
requires teamwork across the business,” said Lionel Hamilton, program
manager in Development Assembly at
GE Aviation.
Teams in Engineering, Sourcing and
Supply Chain have been flexing their
FETT muscles. During the last three
years, five new engines were assembled for the first time: Passport (June
2013), LEAP-1A/-1C (September 2013),
Adaptive Engine Technology Development (AETD) (October 2013), LEAP-1B
(June 2014) and, most recently, the
GE9X engine (March 2016).
The teamwork didn’t stop with
FETT. Throughout this same three-year
period, about 90 development engines
were assembled at GE Aviation – marking one of the biggest engine development periods for the business.

Fort Erie, 27 June 2016 – As part of
Airbus Helicopters Canada’s international Repair and Overhaul success, it
has expanded its Support and Services
department at their main facility in Fort
Erie, ON. The 5,000 square foot space is
an increase of 65% for the company’s
Repair and Overhaul department.
“It is our main priority to keep our
customers‘ aircraft operating at peak
performance. With this expansion, we
will increase the efficiency of our Repair
and Overhaul capabilities, resulting
in faster turn-around-time when an

Hellmers, Co-Owner, Signature S.R.L.
The Bell 505 has accumulated more than
380 LOIs around the globe. The aircraft is
on track for certification in 2016 and has
completed more than 800 test hours.
“The Bell 505 continues to generate
excitement throughout Latin America;
as customers begin to experience the
aircraft’s capabilities, they will see the
aircraft requires service.” said Romain
Trapp, President of Airbus Helicopters
Canada. “An operator’s competiveness
is directly linked to the amount of time
their aircraft is flying. We are committed
to taking the steps necessary to ensure
we support our customers’ ability to
succeed, as their success will ultimately
become a reflection of our own.”
The expansion of Airbus Helicopters
Canada’s Repair and Overhaul department is a direct result of the high
demand for service from customers both
domestically and internationally. Five
years ago there was a dramatic increase
in AS350/H125 aircraft sales worldwide.
With 300 – 600 flight hours per year,
many of these aircraft are coming due
for overhaul. Today, there are currently
522 AS350/H125’s flying in Canada.
Part of the newly expanded facility
is the creation of additional Repair &
Overhaul workstations as well as, the
hiring of new full-time employees to
assist with the high demand. Airbus

value proposition of integrating this
aircraft into their daily operations,” said
Jay Ortiz, vice president of Latin American sales. “The Bell 505 is a value leader
in the short light single market, and we
look forward to delivering this high-performing aircraft to our customers.”
With a cruise speed of 125 knots (232
km/h), range of 360 nautical miles (667
km) and useful load of 1,500 pounds
(608 kg), the Bell 505 is designed to be
safe and easy to fly while providing
significant value to the operator. The
customer-driven design of the aircraft
places safety, performance and affordability at the forefront, blending proven
systems with advanced technology and
a sleek, modern design. The Garmin
G1000H Integrated Avionics Suite provides pilots critical flight information at
a glance to maximize situational awareness. Pilot workload is further reduced
by the Turbomeca Arrius 2R engine
with dual channel Full Authority Digital
Engine Control (FADEC).

Designed for the future: Sizing up Airbus’
new Beluga XL transporter
W
ith development of the new Beluga XL airlifter, Airbus is creating
a platform tailored to meet its evolving
transport needs in the decades to come –
particularly to support future production
ramp-ups for the company’s range of modern single-aisle and widebody jetliners.
The Beluga XL programme was
launched in November 2014, with this
oversized transporter to be utilised for
carrying complete sections of Airbus
aircraft from different production sites
around Europe to the final assembly
lines in Toulouse, France and Hamburg,
Germany.
Based on the airframe of the versatile
A330 jetliner, a total of five Beluga XL
airlifters are to be built, with the first to
enter operational service in mid-2019.
They will gradually replace the existing
fleet of Beluga ST aircraft, which were
www.mrobusinesstoday.com
derived from the shorter-fuselage A300.
“The Beluga XL is really a patchwork,”
said Olivier Delmas, Head of Overall
Aircraft Design for the programme, in
explaining how elements of two A330
jetliner versions are combined for the
Beluga XL. “Geometrically, it is the
forward part of an A330-200F freighter,
with the aft part of an A330-300 variant.”
A large “bubble” airframe section
added to the fuselage’s lower portion takes the Beluga XL’s diameter
from 5.6 metres for an A330 up to 8.8
metres. The cockpit has been lowered
to make space for a main deck with
direct cargo loading/unloading capabilities above it.
Delmas explained this approach was
chosen because no existing aircraft
answered Airbus’ criteria for a new-gen-
eration transporter, and it allowed the
company to create an aircraft capable of
handling its requirements based on the
proven, robust A330 jetliner family.
“We needed the cargo hold to be
45-metres long with an internal diameter of 8 metres, and a payload capability of 50 tonnes,” he added. “These
dimensions can accommodate fuselage
sections and allow us to transport a pair
of A350 XWB wings – something we
can’t do today by air.”
Increasing the Beluga XL’s volume by
30 percent compared to the existing Beluga ST will make the new airlifter much
more cost effective. Further enhancements are to reduce the time needed for
unloading, refuelling and reloading the
aircraft while making its stopovers at
locations across the Airbus production
network.

KC-390 proves high level of maturity in demonstration
flights abroad and follows toward certification in 2017
T
he first prototype of the KC390, next generation multi-mission
aircraft by Embraer, returned to Brazil
after successfully completing its first
international mission, lasting 23 days and
flying more than 48 hours. Currently, two
KC-390 prototypes accumulated more
than 400 flight hours.
Besides participating in the Farnborough Airshow in England, where the
aircraft made its international debut, the
first prototype also conducted demonstration flights with program partners
and potential customers.
Covering more than 16,300 nautical
miles (about 30,200 kilometers) just in
ferry flights, with operations in other
international airports such as Sal (Cape
Verde), Alverca (Portugal) Odolena Voda
(Czech Republic), Cairo (Egypt), Abu
Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) and Malta,
the aircraft demonstrated its high level of
maturity, with availability reaching 100%
during the 16 flights planned and carried
out in locations where the temperature
reached 45° C (113° F).
“This was an excellent opportunity for
some customers to take a closer look at
the aircraft and its innovative features.
The interest around the KC-390 during the
Farnborough Airshow was fantastic, with
the aircraft being visited by more than 20
international delegations”, said Jackson
Schneider, President and CEO of Embraer
Defense and Security. “The positive reaction from potential customers who piloted
the aircraft was of great pride for the company and its employees because the plane
effectively demonstrated its versatility by
fully adapting to the particular characteristics of each operation. We are very
optimistic about the success of the KC-390
in the coming years.”
The aircraft returned to the flight test
campaign, whose focus from now on will
be the certification, which is expected
for the second half of 2017 with the first
delivery scheduled for 2018.
