They are finishing the projects and presentations of Term 2, and reviewing material in preparation for semester exams. Semester exams for students in IB classes will serve a dual purpose, both as an assessment of student achievement in the course to this point, as well as providing valuable practice for the IBO exams they will sit at the end of the two-year course. For students in IB courses, most of their exams will consist of two papers, with the first paper being done in block classes January 19-22. During Semester exam week, January 25-29, all students grades 6-12 will sit exams on the following schedule. A more detailed schedule is included as a separate attachment. Monday, Jan 26 Tuesday, Jan 27 Wednesday, Jan 28 Thursday, Jan 29 English Math Arabic (Group 2 for IB) Make-ups Science Social Sciences French & Spanish (Group 6 & Psychology for IB, Make-ups for grade 6 & 7) Make-ups Exam 1 8:00 – 9:45 Exam 2 10:00 –11:40 Note that students are finished with exams at 11:40. Students should not be on campus if they do not have an exam. Note that cellphones will not be in student possession from 8:00-11:40, thus it will not be possible to contact your child directly. Critical messages must be delivered via the Secondary Office. Students who miss an exam may take it in a make-up session. A medical excuse is required in order for a student to make up a missed exam. Continued in page 3 2 www.aiswest.com Issue 12, Volume 3 January 15, 2015 Week Without Walls Trips are in the final stages of planning. Deadlines for payment or cancellation of trip reservations have passed. Trip chaperones are arranging for Pre-Travel meetings with parents, dealing with unforeseen changes, and drawing up packing lists. Parents, if your child is traveling with WWW, please ensure that the chaperones are aware of any medical or dietary concerns. Be sure that your child packs whatever medicines, including over-the-counter medications that might be needed. When helping your child pack, check the weather forecast for that region. Not every student or family chooses to participate in WWW international travel. Students are expected to participate in the WWW Campus program. Students who remain on campus will be able to select from a variety of activities. Activities range from supervised study relating to the class WWW trip to minicourses, service activities, service day trips, crafts, or other specialized learning opportunities. There may be a fee for specialized materials used in these activities. Currently, the following activities are planned: Grades 6 & 7 - Virtual Tour & Activities Packet, with on-campus check-ins Grades 8-10 – Selection of one of these supervised activities • Arabic Calligraphy • Sports Sampler • Painting a Mural • Photography • Talent Show Preparations • Teacher’s Assistants • Pinata Building There will be more detailed information and updates to planned activities in the next few days. Student Absences We are almost halfway through the academic year. This is a good time to remind parents and students of the requirement for attendance. For students in grades 6-12, an absence limit for credit has been set. Any student who exceeds the limit of 15 days/classes for high school and 20 days/classes for middle school, in any class will not be eligible for credit in that class, unless he or she meets certain academic requirements. Please help your child keep track o absences so as to avoid problems with receiving credit for their classes. A loss of credit places graduation in jeopardy, as 26 credits are required to receive a diploma from AIS.
