Whether you are just taking your first steps or a passionate family history expert, you are sure to find something to pique your interest from the following large selection of events. Exhibitions To commemorate the centenary of WWI there are two exhibitions on display concurrently at Eltham Library Community Gallery. Together they present a vivid account of WWI through images, writings, drawings and multimedia, and capture a diverse range of perspectives. These exhibitions will also include memorabilia from the Eltham Montmorency RSL collection and the Australian Army Signals Museum. Eltham Library Community Gallery Thursday 4 August – Monday 29 August Writing the War: Personal Stories from WWI State Library Victoria’s travelling exhibition is coming to Eltham Library Community Gallery and perfectly complements the launch of Yarra Plenty Regional Library’s Anzac Centenary Book Project on Saturday 6 August at 2pm. This touring exhibition looks at stories from seven Victorians: nurse, bank clerk, farmer, sports master, journalist, artist and activist. Hear their extraordinary stories of war in this moving exhibition tracing WWI through personal accounts. Diamond Valley Library Wednesday 27 July 2.00pm–3.00pm Between 1788–1868, approximately 162,000 convicts were transported to the various Australian penal colonies by the British government. Yvonne Bethell from the Descendants of Convicts Group Victoria will provide an introduction to researching your convict ancestor. Lemnos Gallipoli Photographic Exhibition The Lemnos Gallipoli Photographic Exhibition showcases images of the Anzacs taken on the Greek Island of Lemnos 1915–16. As a base for the Gallipoli campaign, the place of assembly and practise prior to the landings of 25th April, Lemnos was the location of the Australian hospitals and their 130 nurses. It also became a rest camp and place of recuperation for young Australians where an interaction developed with the local Greek population. Poignant photos reveal soldier and nurse visits to local villages, churches, spas and cafés. Writing Biography: A Family Saga of Refugees and Asylum Seekers Watsonia Library Thursday 4 August 11.00am–12.00noon Using his father’s detailed accounts of his life in pre-war Poland, the Holocaust and his colourful life in Melbourne – as well as personal meetings and memories – Henry R. Lew assembles portraits of extraordinary people living through extraordinary events in his book Lion Hearts. Vivien Achia’s memoir, Marrying Italian: When love is not enough, is the story of the marriage between an older Italian immigrant who was a partisan at the end of WWII and a naive girl from a farm in north–east Victoria. Shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards 2014, Vivien will read from her book and discuss her writing process and pathway to publication. Genealogist Beryl O’Gorman will share stories and tips to get the most out of this social media networking service. Watson’s Pier is the story of Stan Watson who was among the last to leave the shores of Gallipoli on 20 December 1915. His great-grandson and author Joshua Funder traces not just one man’s journey but that of a nation in this book which draws on Stan Watson’s own writing, oral history and official records.
