Highlighting the Visual Arts
Welcome to Open Studios West Berkshire and North Hampshire. This
Directory of Artists is designed to highlight the visual arts and make it
possible for you to travel throughout the region to meet and talk to artists in
their studios. In times of austerity all the arts have a central place and
provide inspiration and certainty through the creative process.
There are exciting ideas
to pursue in the studios.

There are over 100 artists
in Open Studios. They
are all represented in our
flagship exhibition
INSIGHT 2014, in the renowned gallery at New Greenham Arts. All the
works are for sale, as they are in the studios, where you might like to
acquire a work of art knowing its iconography. It is a good idea to begin
your art trail from the INSIGHT exhibition. Take the Directory with you, make
a note of the work that catches your eye and go straight over to the studio.
There are also some amazing satellite exhibitions to visit this year. In the
Mezzanine Gallery at Newbury College an art group have put together a
unique handover art
project. Here, multimedia pieces have
evolved through a
journey, as the work
has been passed
between and worked
on by each of the six
artists. At the Corn
Exchange there is an
interesting exhibition
called Traces. Some
artists have been
thinking directly
about the building
and others have
examined the wider
environment. Share
the exploration with
them. Over at
Arlington Arts there is
a sketchbook exhibition which has been ongoing since September 2013,
with visits to sketch at the Ashmolean Museum and the Roche Court
Sculpture Park among other special places. For this exhibition, Open
Studios has ventured into the realm of an art prize.

Central to Open Studios is the impressive flagship exhibition INSIGHT 2014.
There are over 100 artists taking part and they are all represented in the
exhibition which takes place in the renowned art gallery at New
Greenham Arts.
Visitors to this historic venue, formerly an American airbase during the Cold
War, can see a wide range of art forms including sculpture, photography,
textiles, ceramics, glass, jewellery, painting, digital imagery and new this
year edible art. Invigilators are on hand to answer questions and to help you
if you would like to acquire a work of art.
The exhibition runs from 3rd - 26th May and is open daily including
weekends and Bank Holidays. Paul Kessling and John Brazendale are the
curators, assisted by Martin Eastabrook. Make this exciting show your start
point before traveling out to artists’ studios.
Christopher Hall has exhibited widely and his work is represented in the
Ashmolean and other museums and galleries. A reviewer writes:
“Christopher Hall sees the world in a unique way, and this personal vision is
conveyed so that we too become involved in the artist's view of life. We see
the unexpected beauty of a crumbling wall, the charm of an Italian piazza
peopled by old men and children and the drama of a landscape stretching
into the melting distance.”
On leaving the Slade School of Fine Art, Christopher travelled across
Europe in a battered old car to the Italian Marche region - to Recanati,
which is seven miles from the Adriatic coast. Here he met his future wife,
Maria, and here he has often returned to paint.
INSIGHT 2014 continues in the Tandoori restaurant adjacent to the gallery
with a solo exhibition, Romantic Italy by Royal Academy exhibitor,
Christopher Hall. Also on site is Studio 8 with resident artists on hand to
discuss ideas, processes and completed work. Consult this Directory for
times of opening.
This small sample of his output reveals a dedication to painting, combined
with a love and intimate knowledge of a quiet corner of rural Italy.
In addition to INSIGHT 2014 there are some stunning satellite exhibitions;
Traces at the Corn Exchange, Capturing the Moment at the West Berkshire
Community Hospital where Newbury Art Group is also putting on a show
called The Seasons. In Reading Open Hand Open Space have an Exhibition
called Hanging Tough in The Keep, built in 1877 as part of Brocks Barracks.
At Sir Terence Conran’s Benchmark a group of artists show alongside
handmade contemporary furniture and at the Friends Meeting House,
Newbury an award winning group have called their exhibition, The
Applauding Light. A special sketchbook exhibition at Arlington Arts Cover to
Cover, shows initial ideas and concepts, some of which will become
completed works of art on display as part of the exhibition.
There are six schools in Open Studios this year. They invite you to see the
creative work of young people from the age of 5 to 18. Will some of them

I make stoneware pottery in simple, usually functional, forms. The ceramics
are generally glazed and often have relaxed free-flowing decoration. This
year I have been trying new forms, glazes and decorative techniques and I
am building a new kiln, which you can see if you visit the studio.

My sculptures are mainly inspired by
horses although I also sculpt various
other subjects such as wildlife and
dogs. In my work I deconstruct the
movements, simplify the shapes and
identify the dynamic and the rhythms
of the lines to produce contemporary
sculpture. I am working on different
projects or approaches to the subjects
that define different experimentations
and concerns such as geometric
forms and shape or space.

Pamela Hardman
The focus of my work is based on ideas surrounding memories, connections,
the fragility of life and the passing of time. I make large multi-layered charcoal
drawings on paper, and smaller-scale photopolymer gravure prints combined
with blind embossing. Recent exhibitions include Rabley Print Exhibition
(Rabley Drawing Centre), Bite Exhibition (Mall Galleries London), Greenham
Common Open, New Greenham Arts (Joint Winner).

Porcelain and stoneware clays form
the basis of my pottery. Trained as
a production potter in 1970 and
using a gas fired self-built kiln, I
make functional pots that are a
pleasure to use every day.

Julia Bowes
Whilst Julia continues to
produce a wide ranging
catalogue of work, she
remains dedicated to using
oils. This year, in addition to
her strong, vibrant colours
and textures, she has
produced a number of more
delicate and minimalist
pieces. She is still enjoying
her study of magnified
surfaces which provide
wonderful abstracts, plus the
occasional local landscape
and pet portrait.
A visit to Ashford Studio
promises a varied visual feast!
Jan Nethercot
At a turning point in her life
Jan completed an HNC in
Ceramics. This fantastic
experience unleashed her
life long desire to 'play with
clay'. She now enjoys
expressing herself and her
love of natural things
through this medium.
'The Pods' have been
greatly influenced by the
huge rotting, but still stately,
tree trunks that she
encounters during her
frequent walks in Savernake
forest. They have been fired
to stoneware making them
suitable for garden display.

The centuries-old skill of making
Venetian glass beads on the island
of Murano, Venice with a Maestro
taught me the fascinating art of
lampworking and turning the beads into jewellery to wear and cherish.
Also open by appointment.

His early work consisted of
Surrealist Automatism
pieces. Now he has
developed into homage to
Action painting allowing his
physical experience of the earth metamorphosis itself into his art. The
language of his art is definitely the language of the earth.
Mavina Baker
Mavina is a printmaker, her
practice centering on the
intersection of art, design and
craft, where she explores the
crossover between digital
techniques and traditional
print methods, specialising in
hand printing processes
working predominantly in
relief print and letterpress.
Her work is held in public
collections at: Manchester
Metropolitan University,
University of the Creative Arts,
the Centre for Fine Print
Research at UWE and
University of Tennessee, USA.
Mavina was awarded an MA
in Printmaking from UWE, Bristol, and currently manages the Teacup Press
at the Print Shed.
Jeannette Therrien
New, exquisite glass casting by
Jeannette. Unique glass
sculpture that develops its own
landscape of form and vibrant
colour, giving it a life of its own.
Every piece has an
extraordinary ability to draw
you in.
Jeannette is inspired by the
local countryside and interprets
it through the wonderful use of
coloured glass.
She also makes decorative
wall-panel pictures as well as
Splash-backs, Bowls, Plates, Coasters and Jewellery.
Weekly Class and one or two day workshops are available. Commissions
undertaken with kiln-formed or Stained glass.

Imagery has always
been important in
my work, often
imagined and
fanciful, and
sometimes,
abstracted. Birds,
particularly are an
endless source of
inspiration; sculpting
them figuratively or
expressing them
with a few
spontaneous strokes
of glaze and slip.
I shall be exhibiting
my work at the
Harold Hilliers
Arboretum during the summer.
Jill Eisele
The evocative
landscape of the
West Country, and
the rivers and hills
near my home
continue to inspire
my onsite
drawings.
Resulting Oil and
Mixed Media
Paintings explore
further the sense
of place with a
particular
reference to the
abstract quality of
water. This year I
have had work
selected for the
RWA ‘Drawn’ Exhibition in Bristol, the ‘Cork Street Open’ and the ‘Not the
RA’ Exhibition at the Alexander Llewellyn Gallery in London.

Most of my simple
sculptures are raku
fired; I enjoy both the
process and also the
imprecise,
impressionistic finish it
allows. My aim is to
produce figures which
although clearly
human, evoke an
emotion rather than a
distinct identity. The
occasional addition of
found objects plays to
my lifelong love of
beachcombing.

Ceramics
The much-loved Delft Blue of Holland
holds a special place for Dutch born
artist and designer Piet van den
Beuken. Working in her unique studio,
she experiments with different painting
techniques and designs and produces
handmade and hand painted ceramic
tableware, tiles and decorations for
her company, Roelofs & Rubens.
Using materials sourced exclusively
from the UK, her original and exciting
designs bring a fresh Continental look
to quality English earthenware.

I produce a range of earthenware as well as a selection of porcelain pieces.
I employ the traditional techniques of throwing and slip trailing, applying
them to a contemporary design resulting in functional domestic
earthenware.I make my pieces in batches of the same form. This can take
up to 5 days to complete before they can be fired.
My porcelain pieces are
cast and then fired with
gold or platinum lustre.

This year I have been
making with a colleague
from Finland. We have a
lot of fun trying (in vain) to
recreate the work of past
master bow makers but
the journey is so
worthwhile and bit by bit
we chip away at the
secrets, such as unlocking
reasons for stray tool
marks on old bows. Whilst
this study of old bows is the base of my making work, what we end up with
is usually something of a marriage between the best bits of say three 18th
century bows combined into one new bow that is essentially my work.

I make non-representational figurative sculptures
in a narrative, mythical style, which explore
themes of journey, cooperation, relationship to
environment, and the celebration of the
imagination. I draw much of my inspiration from
ancient art, and am particularly interested in the
continuing relevance of the combined
human/animal figure which seems such an
ancient and essential part of our artistic heritage.
In June last year I had a sculpture shown at the Royal Academy’s Summer
Exhibition, and in September 2013 my application to the Royal British
Society of Sculptors was successful.

entanglement with the natural world.
Passionate about craftsmanship, she casts
her distinctive bronzes at her studio - a
warren of the many disciplines she pursues.

Fellow of both the Royal British Society of
Sculptors and the Royal Society of Arts,

Kate Steele
Kate is an oil painter and
printmaker. Flowers, fruit and
vegetables are her main
subjects. As a botanical artist
she was taught to portray flowers
and plants with accuracy, and
although her work is no longer
strictly botanical, she always
aims to stay true to the habit of
the subject. Kate's technique is
based on chiaroscuro, allowing
light and shade to portray the
beauty of flower.

I use colour and mark making to create a sense
of movement. Drawing will always be my lynch
pin. I love the unforgiving nature of ink on paper

that my new work is moving closer to pure
abstraction, this is an exciting and challenging

My career began 60 years ago after training
as a painter at Goldsmiths London
University and the Academie Ranson in
Paris. The work in my studio reflects pieces
from all periods of my life as a ceramicist
including 15 years of association with John
Piper. Recently, I have been concentrating
on drawing and there will be an exhibition
of these works: Family and friends 2013.
I specialise in equine and canine art, in either
pastels or oils, and happily take commission in
either medium. I enjoy capturing the character and
expressive personality of animals and am equally
content to paint polished competition animals or
old family favourites. I am looking forward to
welcoming everybody as well as meeting any four
legs that come along!

him. His recurrent themes are of the Wiltshire
and Pembrokeshire landscape.
Nature is still my main source of
inspiration, I try to find the abstract
forms in fleeting glimpses or
atmospheres of places that I have
visited. The changing light and
colours through the seasons and the
exploration of space and movement
make me want to convey the
excitement in oils and acrylics. This
year I have ventured back into
watercolour and I am enjoying the
translucent spontaneous qualities of
the medium.
Vernacular architecture, interiors and gardens
have featured in his work this year, still finding
time to paint and draw chickens and pigs
from life.
Bryan’s work is unselfconscious and has a
disarmingly simple quality; his work is almost
exclusively figurative. He works quickly and is
prolific; the work contains a freshness and
spontaneous feel.

Gill Banks
Gill is still enjoying colour explorations inspired often by photographs taken
whilst travelling. She works with hand dyed natural fabrics and hand stitch

spontaneity of working with encaustic
wax I have been experimenting with
different techniques such as fusing
many layers of wax together and

Nuala Whales
Summer came late last year but when it did arrive we made the most of it
and enjoyed many happy days painting en plein air. Although oil paint is a
tricky, sometimes messy medium to manage outdoors, I find this process
ultimately rewarding. Local Berkshire landscapes and the Hampshire
Downs, winter trees and still life from my studio feature in my body of work

Simon Sonsino
Calligraphy is a vibrant art form and
what I create tries to reflect this.
Inspiration for my work can come
from surprising places; whether a
song lyric, a piece of prose or even a
snippet from a conversation
overheard in a crowd. My calligraphy
tends toward the abstract and most
applications of my work are for
artistic calligraphy rather than
functional lettering so doesn’t
necessarily rely on legibility. Formal
principals are followed in the main
but calligraphy is more than just
letterform; it places value on rhythm,
dynamic gestures and impact.
Yvonne Sonsino
As a passionate gardener,
nature is the inspiration for my
watercolours, pen and ink or
pencil sketches, silk painting
and the occasional stone
sculpture. The majority of my
work has tended towards
detailed botanical studies but I
am now enjoying much freer,
abstract forms from nature,
and these work great on silk.
The changing seasons, line,
colour and texture can keep

ranging from Shakespeare and
musicals to classics, new plays
and youth theatre productions.
The theatre’s work is also seen by
over 30,000 people on tours that
visit theatres around the UK as
well as our rural touring productions which play in village halls and small

OHOS is an artist-led Industrial and Provident Society that provides
affordable studio and gallery space, and collaborates with art groups,
museums, schools, colleges and universities to present a programme of
exhibitions and other activities. It also provides public access to The Keep,
an historic grade II listed Victorian armoury and gatehouse built in 1877 as
part of Brock Barracks. OHOS is grateful to Reading Borough Council,
Clarkslegal, Community First Battle, The Architectural Heritage Fund, and
Arts Council England for support of its activities.

A lively and exciting exhibition where artists from Open
Studios 2014 will be working in their chosen media.
Painting, print, photography and textiles to create a unique
and individual piece of work for this exhibition based on
their interpretation of Capturing the Moment. We hope that
you come and enjoy the exhibition and for a moment at
least the art work puts a smile on the face of the viewer.
The exhibition takes place within the hospital corridors
and gardens.

You are welcome to visit the studios at Mary Hare School where you will
find examples of student work from all year groups. You will have the
opportunity to see both work in progress and final pieces across a broad
range of media and disciplines including Fine Art, Sculpture, Ceramics,
Textiles, Graphics, Photography and Mixed media.
For the first time ever Cranford
House presents an exhibition of
fine art by our GCSE art students
to the general public. We are
proud to announce that the
exhibition will be opened by world
renowned sculptor Johannes von
Stumm. He will give a talk on his
own art practice and work. Please join us at 5.30pm on Friday 9th May for
this unique event.
There will be a selection of fine art coursework and examination pieces on
display in The Orangery. The work demonstrates a variety of different
themes and ideas for you to reflect upon and enjoy.
This year why not call in to meet our artist in residence Michael Brown, who
will be happy to give you more information about the art works and perhaps
tell you a bit about his own pieces.
Visitors are also very welcome in school on the afternoon of Saturday 17th
May, 2 pm - 4.30pm. Come and join some of our students at a glassmaking workshop in the Art Department and view the GCSE Art Exhibition
over refreshments.

Michael Brown studied Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art and since
graduating in 2008, has continued to explore his passion for creating threedimensional work. His work has been shortlisted for numerous prizes
including the Thread Needle and the RA Summer Exhibition. His sculptures,
often inspired by both the spiritual and the mundane, transient aspects of
life are closely informed by an abundance of illustrations.

Trinity School will be exhibiting their students
work showing a diverse, exciting range of final
outcome A Level and GCSE pieces on a range of
themes. Students make first-hand observations,
then research the work of other artists, designers
and craftspeople. From this research, students
provide a range of creative experimentation
showing individual technical ability.
On Thursday 26th June, parents and the general public are welcome to
come and browse the work produced this year.
Open Studios Education
Connections; Stanley Spencer at Burghclere
The world famous murals by British artist Stanley Spencer in the Sandham
Memorial Chapel, Burghclere were the inspiration for the annual exhibition
project, September 2013.
22 pupils from John Rankin Junior School, Newbury worked with potter
John Brazendale and silk painter Sarah Moorcroft to study the murals
which feature a unique and personal view of Spencer's experiences as a
medical orderly in the First World War.

The project began in the Chapel with a lecture about Spencer and a
drawing session tutored by the artists and school teacher, Helen Douglas.
It continued at New Greenham Arts where the drawings were used to create
ceramic works and silk paintings of real strength.

Once finished, all the amazing fired and processed works were mounted and
exhibited at John Rankin School for the benefit of parents, teachers and
class mates. Pupil, Francesca, writing in one of many thank you letters, said:
“Now that I have had this experience I find art more interesting and exciting”.
“I have improved my art skills massively”, said another pupil, Rebekah.
