This Directory of Artists is designed to highlight the visual arts and make it possible for you to travel throughout the region to meet and talk to artists in their studios. In times of austerity all the arts have a central place and provide inspiration and certainty through the creative process. There are exciting ideas to pursue in the studios. The great value in visiting them is to see how a work of art comes about. Read some of the artists’ statements in this Directory; from them you will see what a wide range of art forms can be discovered; strong sculpture and painting, textiles including couture millenery and new to Open Studios, edible art! One artist explores the relationship between words heard and words seen: ‘Pop along and look at my work over a cup of tea’, she says! There are over 100 artists in Open Studios. They are all represented in our flagship exhibition INSIGHT 2014, in the renowned gallery at New Greenham Arts. All the works are for sale, as they are in the studios, where you might like to acquire a work of art knowing its iconography. It is a good idea to begin your art trail from the INSIGHT exhibition. Take the Directory with you, make a note of the work that catches your eye and go straight over to the studio. There are also some amazing satellite exhibitions to visit this year. In the Mezzanine Gallery at Newbury College an art group have put together a unique handover art project. Here, multimedia pieces have evolved through a journey, as the work has been passed between and worked on by each of the six artists. At the Corn Exchange there is an interesting exhibition called Traces. Some artists have been thinking directly about the building and others have examined the wider environment. Share the exploration with them. Over at Arlington Arts there is a sketchbook exhibition which has been ongoing since September 2013, with visits to sketch at the Ashmolean Museum and the Roche Court Sculpture Park among other special places. For this exhibition, Open Studios has ventured into the realm of an art prize. Go to our brilliant website for more information about this and the whole of Open Studios, www.open-studios.org.uk. The committee of Open Studios has worked hard all the year round to make sure that excellence is maintained. They would like to thank both sponsors and supporters for their help. OPENING TIMES Daily: 12 noon-2pm and 6pm-11pm. The New Greenham Tandoori Restaurant shows the work of local artists throughout the year. DIRECTIONS OPENING TIMES DIRECTIONS Alongside the Gallery at New Greenham Arts Monday to Sunday 11am-5pm, Thursdays 11am-8pm. Central to Open Studios is the impressive flagship exhibition INSIGHT 2014. There are over 100 artists taking part and they are all represented in the exhibition which takes place in the renowned art gallery at New Greenham Arts. Visitors to this historic venue, formerly an American airbase during the Cold War, can see a wide range of art forms including sculpture, photography, textiles, ceramics, glass, jewellery, painting, digital imagery and new this year edible art. Invigilators are on hand to answer questions and to help you if you would like to acquire a work of art. The exhibition runs from 3rd - 26th May and is open daily including weekends and Bank Holidays. Paul Kessling and John Brazendale are the curators, assisted by Martin Eastabrook. Make this exciting show your start point before traveling out to artists’ studios. Christopher Hall has exhibited widely and his work is represented in the Ashmolean and other museums and galleries. A reviewer writes: “Christopher Hall sees the world in a unique way, and this personal vision is conveyed so that we too become involved in the artist's view of life. We see the unexpected beauty of a crumbling wall, the charm of an Italian piazza peopled by old men and children and the drama of a landscape stretching into the melting distance.” On leaving the Slade School of Fine Art, Christopher travelled across Europe in a battered old car to the Italian Marche region - to Recanati, which is seven miles from the Adriatic coast. Here he met his future wife, Maria, and here he has often returned to paint. INSIGHT 2014 continues in the Tandoori restaurant adjacent to the gallery with a solo exhibition, Romantic Italy by Royal Academy exhibitor, Christopher Hall. Also on site is Studio 8 with resident artists on hand to discuss ideas, processes and completed work. Consult this Directory for times of opening. This small sample of his output reveals a dedication to painting, combined with a love and intimate knowledge of a quiet corner of rural Italy. In addition to INSIGHT 2014 there are some stunning satellite exhibitions; Traces at the Corn Exchange, Capturing the Moment at the West Berkshire Community Hospital where Newbury Art Group is also putting on a show called The Seasons. In Reading Open Hand Open Space have an Exhibition called Hanging Tough in The Keep, built in 1877 as part of Brocks Barracks. At Sir Terence Conran’s Benchmark a group of artists show alongside handmade contemporary furniture and at the Friends Meeting House, Newbury an award winning group have called their exhibition, The Applauding Light. A special sketchbook exhibition at Arlington Arts Cover to Cover, shows initial ideas and concepts, some of which will become completed works of art on display as part of the exhibition. There are six schools in Open Studios this year. They invite you to see the creative work of young people from the age of 5 to 18. Will some of them be our future artists and designers? I am working on different projects or approaches to the subjects that define different experimentations and concerns such as geometric forms and shape or space. 6 Artists OpenStudios 2014 Pamela Hardman The focus of my work is based on ideas surrounding memories, connections, the fragility of life and the passing of time. I make large multi-layered charcoal drawings on paper, and smaller-scale photopolymer gravure prints combined with blind embossing. OPENING TIMES 11am-5pm 6pm-8pm Julia Bowes Whilst Julia continues to produce a wide ranging catalogue of work, she remains dedicated to using oils. This year, in addition to her strong, vibrant colours and textures, she has produced a number of more delicate and minimalist pieces. She is still enjoying her study of magnified surfaces which provide wonderful abstracts, plus the occasional local landscape and pet portrait. A visit to Ashford Studio promises a varied visual feast! Jan Nethercot At a turning point in her life Jan completed an HNC in Ceramics. This fantastic experience unleashed her life long desire to 'play with clay'. She now enjoys expressing herself and her love of natural things through this medium. 'The Pods' have been greatly influenced by the huge rotting, but still stately, tree trunks that she encounters during her frequent walks in Savernake forest. They have been fired to stoneware making them suitable for garden display. 8 Artists OpenStudios 2014 wo 11am-5pm The centuries-old skill of making Venetian glass beads on the island of Murano, Venice with a Maestro taught me the fascinating art of lampworking and turning the beads into jewellery to wear and cherish. Also open by appointment. 6 7 His early work consisted of Surrealist Automatism pieces. Now he has developed into homage to Action painting allowing his physical experience of the earth metamorphosis itself into his art. The language of his art is definitely the language of the earth. Mavina Baker Mavina is a printmaker, her practice centering on the intersection of art, design and craft, where she explores the crossover between digital techniques and traditional print methods, specialising in hand printing processes working predominantly in relief print and letterpress. Her work is held in public collections at: Manchester Metropolitan University, University of the Creative Arts, the Centre for Fine Print Research at UWE and University of Tennessee, USA. Mavina was awarded an MA in Printmaking from UWE, Bristol, and currently manages the Teacup Press at the Print Shed. Jeannette Therrien New, exquisite glass casting by Jeannette. Unique glass sculpture that develops its own landscape of form and vibrant colour, giving it a life of its own. Every piece has an extraordinary ability to draw you in. Jeannette is inspired by the local countryside and interprets it through the wonderful use of coloured glass. She also makes decorative wall-panel pictures as well as Splash-backs, Bowls, Plates, Coasters and Jewellery. Weekly Class and one or two day workshops are available. OPENING TIMES 11am-5pm OPENING TIMES 6pm-8pm 11am-5pm 6pm-8pm Diana Barraclough Imagery has always been important in my work, often imagined and fanciful, and sometimes, abstracted. Birds, particularly are an endless source of inspiration; sculpting them figuratively or expressing them with a few spontaneous strokes of glaze and slip. I shall be exhibiting my work at the Harold Hilliers Arboretum during the summer. Jill Eisele The evocative landscape of the West Country, and the rivers and hills near my home continue to inspire my onsite drawings. Resulting Oil and Mixed Media Paintings explore further the sense of place with a particular reference to the abstract quality of water. This year I have had work selected for the RWA ‘Drawn’ Exhibition in Bristol, the ‘Cork Street Open’ and the ‘Not the RA’ Exhibition at the Alexander Llewellyn Gallery in London. T: 07889 740127 W: www.jilleisele.com Christine King Most of my simple sculptures are raku fired; I enjoy both the process and also the imprecise, impressionistic finish it allows. My aim is to produce figures which although clearly human, evoke an emotion rather than a distinct identity. The occasional addition of found objects plays to my lifelong love of beachcombing. T: 07974 942275, 01488 668742 9 Ceramics The much-loved Delft Blue of Holland holds a special place for Dutch born artist and designer Piet van den Beuken. Working in her unique studio, she experiments with different painting techniques and designs and produces handmade and hand painted ceramic tableware, tiles and decorations for her company, Roelofs & Rubens. Using materials sourced exclusively from the UK, her original and exciting designs bring a fresh Continental look to quality English earthenware. I employ the traditional techniques of throwing and slip trailing, applying them to a contemporary design resulting in functional domestic earthenware.I make my pieces in batches of the same form. This can take up to 5 days to complete before they can be fired. My porcelain pieces are cast and then fired with gold or platinum lustre. These forms are based on ideas of related scale and proportion. Jim Crockatt I design and make furniture of an individual nature, matching the unique beauty, strength and character of the wood to the specific need and taste of the customer. I use the richness of the locally grown hardwoods to guide the design process. I like to exploit the contrasting colours and figure of the wood to maximum effect. I have exhibited extensively including Liberty of Regent Street. 10 Artists OpenStudios 2014 OpenStudios 2014 Artists 11 11 Howard Birchmore Painter Philip Brown Luthier 14 85a Northbrook Street, Newbury, Berkshire RG14 1AE 01635 35465 EMAIL [email protected] WEBSITE www.philipbrownviolins.co.uk ADDRESS 238 Overdown Road, Tilehurst, Reading, Berkshire RG31 6PN 0118 962 5656 EMAIL [email protected] WEBSITE www.howardbirchmore.co.uk ADDRESS TEL TEL DIRECTIONS J12 M4, take A4 towards Reading, straight on at 2 roundabouts. Booking essential. OPENING TIMES This year I have been making with a colleague from Finland. We have a lot of fun trying (in vain) to recreate the work of past master bow makers but the journey is so worthwhile and bit by bit we chip away at the secrets, such as unlocking reasons for stray tool marks on old bows. Whilst this study of old bows is the base of my making work, what we end up with is usually something of a marriage between the best bits of say three 18th century bows combined into one new bow that is essentially my work. Impressed decoration continues to be a major influence on my work. In particular, landscape drawings of the Berkshire countryside have resulted in a more ‘2 dimensional’ approach. I experimented with this idea in last year’s Open Studios Educational project with Year 6 John Rankin pupils when we translated Stanley Spencer paintings into ceramic slab pictures. My love of Troika pottery is the basis of a new idea where I combine classic Troika forms with my range of impressed still life, forest or landscape designs. 13 Sadie Brockbank ws Sculpture, collage, painting Sioban Coppinger Sculptor 16 The Muse, 23 Oxford Street, Lambourn, Berkshire RG17 8XS 01488 73978 EMAIL [email protected] WEBSITE www.siobancoppinger.co.uk ADDRESS1 Mortimer Hill, The Street, Reading, Berkshire RG7 3PW 0118 933 3390 EMAIL [email protected] WEBSITE www.sadiebrockbank.com ADDRESS TEL TEL DIRECTIONS In Mortimer pass St John’s Church on your right. OPENING TIMES OPENING TIMES 11am-5pm 11am-5pm 6pm-8pm 6pm-8pm I make non-representational figurative sculptures in a narrative, mythical style, which explore themes of journey, cooperation, relationship to environment, and the celebration of the imagination. I draw much of my inspiration from ancient art, and am particularly interested in the continuing relevance of the combined human/animal figure which seems such an ancient and essential part of our artistic heritage. In June last year I had a sculpture shown at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, and in September 2013 my application to the Royal British Society of Sculptors was successful. 12 Artists OpenStudios 2014 Coupling an acute observation of people and animals, Sioban is inspired by our entanglement with the natural world. Passionate about craftsmanship, she casts her distinctive bronzes at her studio - a warren of the many disciplines she pursues. You’re welcome to view and buy bronze and silver sculptures, paintings, drawings and etchings, as well as attend workshops. Fellow of both the Royal British Society of Sculptors and the Royal Society of Arts, Sioban exhibits widely. I find a lot of beauty in everyday objects too, and still life is a subject that I also love.” 6pm-8pm The Chapel at the Newton Road cemetery welcomes three artists this year. Their work is different yet complementary. Isabel, Christine and Kate have worked together to produce a unique show inspired by its setting. Isabel Carmona-Andreu Isabel presents new printing and watercolour work developed from urban and natural landscapes where she has sketched throughout the year. Favourite locations this year include Barcelona and Segovia in Spain and the isles of Scilly in Cornwall. Her sketches are colourful and spontaneous. W: www.isacarmonasketches.blogspot.co.uk Pam trained at the London College of Printing as a Graphic Designer. She exhibits nationally, and last November in Beauvais, France. Christine Lack Christine’s ceramic work is hand-built enabling each piece to be individual, taking on a character of its own. She is drawn to the fragile beauty of form and line that she sees within the landscape often blending hill with hollow, tree with stone, to create the final form with a hint of colour within the gentle smoke firing. Christine is running one of the public workshops this year. E: [email protected] W: www.smoke-and-fire.co.uk Martin Eastabrook Following years of form and glaze development this year brings together many unique discoveries. The emphasis will be on large sculptural forms that make a statement in domestic and commercial environments. Specialized highly tactile surfaces blend with many colours from a palette based on sea and rock hues. Examples of previous work can be seen on Martin’s website. W: www.martineastabrookceramics.com Kate Steele Kate is an oil painter and printmaker. Flowers, fruit and vegetables are her main subjects. As a botanical artist she was taught to portray flowers and plants with accuracy, and although her work is no longer strictly botanical, she always aims to stay true to the habit of the subject. Kate's technique is based on chiaroscuro, allowing light and shade to portray the beauty of flower. E: [email protected] W: www.kate-steele.com, www.kate-steele.blogspot.co.uk Tigi Hignell This year brings continued exploration of cold glass with an increasing emphasis on intricate metal-work lines and 3D objects made in glass and metal. Creating detailed shapes which cast reflections and shadow effects on the world around them. Work is inspired by nature and the technical processes involved in glass work; resulting in a mixture of both representative and abstract glass images. Examples of previous work can be seen on Tigi’s website. W: www.tigihignell.co.uk These three artists are also taking part in the Cover to Cover sketching project at Arlington Arts. 14 Artists OpenStudios 2014 OpenStudios 2014 Artists 15 19 Diccon Dadey Sculptor ADDRESS The Barn @ Inholmes, Woodlands St. Mary, Hungerford, Berkshire RG17 7SU TEL 07800 965548 EMAIL [email protected] WEBSITE www.dadeymetalart.co.uk From M4 jctn 14 take turning to Wantage. Helen Colling The idea that every human presence leaves an echo after it is gone continues to inspire my work. Old buildings and historic events often provide the setting for shadowy, ethereal figures. Images are printed, painted and stitched onto layers of sheer and semi-translucent fabric to give an elusive quality. E: [email protected] W: www.okra-textiles.com/artists/helen-colling Rebecca Hedges Pictures Everywhere OPENING TIMES 11am-5pm 6pm-8pm I use colour and mark making to create a sense of movement. Drawing will always be my lynch pin. I love the unforgiving nature of ink on paper it gives me courage to commit marks to paper quickly and decisively especially when capturing the racehorse in action. I have begun to explore the human form in motion and I feel that my new work is moving closer to pure abstraction, this is an exciting and challenging time for me as a visual artist. 16 Artists OpenStudios 2014 I love looking through my camera and finding something, whether natural or man made, from which to create a piece of art. His recurrent themes are of the Wiltshire and Pembrokeshire landscape. Nature is still my main source of inspiration, I try to find the abstract forms in fleeting glimpses or atmospheres of places that I have visited. The changing light and colours through the seasons and the exploration of space and movement make me want to convey the excitement in oils and acrylics. This year I have ventured back into watercolour and I am enjoying the translucent spontaneous qualities of the medium. Vernacular architecture, interiors and gardens have featured in his work this year, still finding time to paint and draw chickens and pigs from life. Bryan’s work is unselfconscious and has a disarmingly simple quality; his work is almost exclusively figurative. He works quickly and is prolific; the work contains a freshness and spontaneous feel. 29 Edy Gosselin Painting ADDRESS Newbury Central Library, The Wharf, Newbury, Berkshire RG14 5AU TEL 01635 43109 EMAIL [email protected] WEBSITE www.edygosselin.co.uk DIRECTIONS Central Newbury Christopher Hall and Ursula Waechter 32 Painting, Ceramics Christopher Hall, Ursula Waechter Catherine Villa, Station Road, Newbury, Berkshire RG14 7LP 01635 42340 EMAIL [email protected] WEBSITE www.christopherhall-painter.com ADDRESS TEL OPENING TIMES Across yard at back of house. I could consider myself a portrait painter whether my subject is human or equine but then trees, skies and water are intriguing too. All my work is made in sustainably sourced temperate hardwoods. 32 Artists OpenStudios 2014 Teresa Munn Teresa’s work has been inspired by long walks along the south coast beaches and in our beautiful local countryside. She investigates the division of lines, colours and textures of the rural landscape. These are reflected in sculpted or slipcast ‘Coast’ and ‘Forest’ forms, and ceramic wall plaques of local textures, which aim to project a sense of place. She works mostly in white earthenware clay, using copper and other oxides to provide contrast and depth. It is a new journey for me and I add it gradually to my style and designs. In addition to my seascapes and landscapes I am now broadening my interest to include still life painting. Each piece is rich in texture and full of my trademark flicks and lines giving it an energy and edge. I have reached an understanding of chromatic colours, volume and space by drawing simple lines and shape. This year I would like to show a new approach to stitches and the design process. OPENING TIMES ws 11am-5pm 6pm-8pm OPENING TIMES 11am-5pm 6pm-8pm Simon Sonsino Calligraphy is a vibrant art form and what I create tries to reflect this. Inspiration for my work can come from surprising places; whether a song lyric, a piece of prose or even a snippet from a conversation overheard in a crowd. My calligraphy tends toward the abstract and most applications of my work are for artistic calligraphy rather than functional lettering so doesn’t necessarily rely on legibility. Formal principals are followed in the main but calligraphy is more than just letterform; it places value on rhythm, dynamic gestures and impact. Yvonne Sonsino As a passionate gardener, nature is the inspiration for my watercolours, pen and ink or pencil sketches, silk painting and the occasional stone sculpture. The majority of my work has tended towards detailed botanical studies but I am now enjoying much freer, abstract forms from nature, and these work great on silk. The changing seasons, line, colour and texture can keep me quiet for hours. OPENING TIMES 11am-5pm 6pm-8pm Elinor Cooper My interests are varied, I use different methods to create my art. My influences come from folklore and comics. I enjoy mixing darker themes from tales into drawings and photographs of the world around me. I like to draw out the positive and negative side of life. My disability dictates how I work. As my drawing is shaky, I like to keep all the lines I have drawn and re draw over lines which creates a unique effect. Adeliza Mole I record the intricacies and vibrancy of nature, capturing aspects of the countryside and creation as if it could vanish. Inspired by local common land, woodland and horses moving through the landscape. I find perfections in structures, environment, colour and people. I search to devise intimate schemes, letting the paints movement on the surface dictate at times, and do not control all brushstrokes. E: [email protected] W: www.adelizaart.dinstudio.co.uk 38 OPENING TIMES 11am-5pm Artists OpenStudios 2014 I continue to work in watercolour, painting still life subjects, landscapes and countryside scenes, often featuring cows and sheep. The now award-winning art group is delighted to exhibit again this year. The work is diverse, surprising, intriguing, extraordinary – there is some place for convention but, to be honest, you may find it hard to locate exactly where it might be! The Meeting House, for so many years a place of peace, refuge, opportunity, discovery, and enlightenment is the perfect place for this show as it lies right under our noses, exactly where the most wonderful and beautiful things usually lie. She paints in oil on canvas or panel adapting the traditional technique of glazing which consists of building up thin layers of transparent paint. The result is a stunning depth of colour and form.
