The city’s nickname, “The Fruit City,” was earned in part by
the fact that Benton County was the largest apple-producing
county in the United States – with an unprecedented 300+
varieties originating from Bentonville itself. In 1875 Colonel
Samuel West Peel transformed what was once a working farm
on the edge of Bentonville proper into an Italianate mansion.
Blight devastated the area’s fruit industry in the early 1900s
and forced the community to concentrate on local business
which continues to thrive. Strolling the Bentonville Square
today it is easy to imagine a bustling community – everything
from an opera house and movie theaters to doctors’ offices
and merchants’ shops, all the way to a distillery and more
have found a home in downtown Bentonville over the years.
The statue in the center of the town square was dedicated in
memory of Confederate soldiers in 1908 and is to this day one
of the most photographed vignettes in our community.
On a sunny May morning in 1950, a young man by the name
of Sam Walton opened the doors to the family business on
the west side of the Bentonville Town Square. It is from that
single location with its simple red and white striped awning –
which is now the official Walmart Visitor’s Center – that the
Walton’s breathed life into what would become one of the
world’s largest retail empires. The rest, as they say, is history.

RICH
FUTURE
As proud as we are of our past, Bentonville is just as excited
about the opportunities for our community that lie ahead.
Whether you arrive by plane, train, bus, bike or car expect to be
energized by all the remarkable signs of growth our community
is experiencing. Although many visitors originally come to
Bentonville for business at the World Trade Center or at the
Home Office of Walmart or Sam’s Club, there are many other
reasons to mix business with pleasure on your trip.
There’s time for work and play here and no matter what your
outdoor preferences are; count on finding the very best of
golfing, boating, fishing, swimming, mountain biking, hiking and
more during your stay with us in Bentonville.
As we enjoy continued growth and prosperity as a community,
one of the most exciting projects that is slated to open soon is
a premier national art institution dedicated to American art and
artists, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Alice Walton,
daughter of the late Sam Walton, personally founded this
venture, and the museum will house works from American artists
along with galleries dedicated to regional art and artists. The
museum will be within walking distance of the Bentonville Town
Square, and we believe it is just one part of what will be a very
rich cultural future for our community.
ON THE
SQUARE
Get a real feel for our
hometown by visiting
the busy district
centered around the
Bentonville Town
Square. In addition
to the original Walton
5 & 10 – which now
serves as the official
Walmart Visitor’s Center
- enjoy shopping with
local retailers that sell
everything from school
and party supplies to
bicycles, jewelry and more. Step inside one of
the eclectic boutiques in the area or satisfy your
craving for scrumptious cuisine.
For your convenience, the city of Bentonville
now provides free wireless Internet service in and
around the downtown square area. So grab your
laptop and a cup of coffee and head downtown!
The square is also the center of seasonal events
and activities such as:
• Farmers Market
• Ice Rink
• First Friday
• Splash Park
• Art Walk
• Christmas Parade
• Lighting of the Square

CRYSTAL BRIDGES AT THE MASSEY
479.418.5700 | www.crystalbridges.org www.massey.crystalbridges.org
Crystal Bridges at the Massey is designed to build connections,
both literally and figuratively, with the future museum and
the communities of Northwest Arkansas. Until the facilities
are complete, art programming is in full swing at the Massey –
located just off the town square at 125 West Central Avenue.
Crystal Bridges at the
Massey serves as a
temporary gallery space
that will house a wide
variety of traveling
exhibits. This program
and gallery space
features a scale model of
Crystal Bridges Museum
of American Art along
with recent construction photos. Crystal Bridges at the Massey
also showcases touring exhibitions which are free and open
to the public.
MUSEUM OF NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIFACTS
479.273.2456
www.museumofnativeamericanartifacts.org
Located at 202 S.W. “O” Street, founder David Bogle
invites you to take a “walk through
pre-historic time” in our area’s newest
attraction. Delve into the lives and
daily activities of ancient Americans –
forefathers to the American Indians —
through an individual audio wand tour
of the facilities.

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art
is envisioned as a premier art institution
dedicated to American art and artists. The
main pavilions will house a permanent
collection of American art masterworks from
the Colonial Era to modern day, and touring
collections from national art institutions.
Where Art and Nature Intersect
From the beginning, natural surroundings
have been as much of a design element of the
Crystal Bridges Museum as the building itself.
A multi-purpose trail for bicyclists and a
pedestrian art trail lined with sculpture, native
plants and foliage will run north through the
property crossing a scenic bridge. A viewing
platform will offer visitors a spectacular view
of the museum and the beautiful Ozark bluffs
that surround the museum.

DAY TRIPS
Take the road less traveled with day trips to these nearby attractions:
BOSTON MOUNTAINS SCENIC LOOP
Compare and contrast these two very divergent roads that form this
scenic route – US 71 and I-540. US 71 – the Arkansas Scenic Byway
– forms half the route as it heads south out of Fayetteville. See and
feel firsthand the rugged geography of the region as it twists, turns
and dips through this part of the drive. Contrasting sharply with US
71, enjoy the smooth, modern composition of Scenic Highway 540
as you seemingly glide over all of nature’s offerings – with a single
exception to the rule being a tunnel through a granite ridge near
Winslow. If life truly is a “highway,” you won’t want to miss this one!
EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSAS
Whether you opt to have a soothing mineral bath that has been a
part of the intrigue for those seeking restoration in Eureka Springs
for centuries or if you simply choose to take advantage of a world
class massage at one of the city’s day spas, you will enjoy your short
visit to this destination. Located approximately 40 miles west of
Bentonville, you can also experience the city’s Historic District or
visit local shops and galleries for the day. You can also experience
the city’s most haunted spots or visit one of our many art galleries.
Find out more about this destination at www.eurekasprings.org.
BRANSON, MISSOURI
Consider making the two-hour drive over to Branson, MO and
visit what is heralded as the “live music show capital of the world.”
It’s home to everything from Silver Dollar City to nearly fifty live
performance theaters. Find out more about this destination at www.
explorebranson.com.

Letter from the Governor
Arkansas is known as “The Natural State”
for a good reason. Our spectacular vistas
and bountiful wildlife have made the state a
popular destination for visitors from around
the world. Northwest Arkansas provides
an abundance of opportunity for outdoor
recreation, including Devil’s Den State Park
and the newly developed Hobbs State Park
Conservation Area. At 12,045 acres along the southern shore of
Beaver Lake, it is Arkansas largest state park.
One of the best ways to see the region is from the window of a
train car. You can enjoy the leisurely elegance of real train travel
through the mountains and valleys of Northwest Arkansas along
the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad, riding back to the Golden
Age in beautifully restored turn-of-the-century passenger cars
with elegant inlaid mahogany interiors or a 1950s-era parlor
car.
If Civil War history is your interest, plan a visit to Pea Ridge
National Military Park, site of the 1862 battle that decided the
fate of Missouri, or tour the Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park,
recognized nationally as one of America’s most intact Civil War
Battlefields.
Your visit to Bentonville provides a look at one of America’s
fastest-growing communities, driven by the explosive growth
of Arkansas companies such as Walmart, and no stay in the
area would be complete without a visit to the Walmart Visitors
Center on the square in historic Downtown. It’s the birthplace
of the world’s largest retailer and a real Arkansas success story.
Our quality of life is second to none. Bentonville and Northwest
Arkansas offer first-class art galleries, museums, theater, music,
and fine dining. While you’re here, you will find warm hospitality
and excellent accommodations for meetings. Enjoy your visit
and come back often.
Sincerely,
Mike Beebe
