Hamriyah Free Zone (HFZ) is extremely
proud of its positive contribution to the
economic growth of Sharjah and the UAE.
We estimate the total value of foreign direct
investment (FDI) in our Free Zone has touched
US$20 billion in 2010. Our performance is in
line with the vision set for HFZ as a growth
engine of the local economy.
More than 5000 companies from 137 countries
around the world have a base in HFZ, including
international heavyweights such as Unger Steel,
PikPens, Larsen and Toubro (L&T), Standard
Chartered, DHL and Essar. The quality of the
investor footfall at our Free Zone speaks for
itself. I thank them for their continued support
over the years, and for the confidence they have
shown in our future.
2010 was the twelfth consecutive year of
record growth for us. Against an uncertain
global recovery and despite the return of
competition in market HFZ continued to
perform strongly. This reflects the success of
our business model and demonstrates we serve
our investors wisely and well by giving them the
efficient and effective professional services they
seek, always putting their interests first, in good
times or bad.
stronger. HFZ’s CSR initiatives, overseen by
Green Team and She-Q club, are wide ranging
and include the concepts of ‘contributing to
the environment,’ ‘assuring safety and health,’
‘enabling the disabled,’ ‘corporate citizenship
activities,’ and ‘inspiring an environment of
giving’. This approach has earned us numerous
accolades.
We cannot achieve the results we do – without
our revered stakeholders. I would like to
congratulate all our ‘Top-3 2011’ award winners
who really do represent the best in the business.
Their high level of performance is displayed
not only in the world-class quality of their
products and services, but also in the new bar
they have helped Hamriyah Free Zone achieve
in infrastructure, service, logistics, technology,
affordability and sustainability leadership.
We are at the threshold of the most opportune
moment in the history of HFZ as we accelerate
our growth trajectory and build marvels of
infrastructure to meet the nation’s development
aspirations.
Even when recession was at its peak during the
2008-10 period, the number of companies grew
exponentially - from 3,341 to 5,000 - a growth of
almost 50 per cent. Since the beginning of this
year we have registered over 700 companies
which makes obvious we have the right strategy,
the right culture and the right product to deliver
consistent and sustained value to our investors.
Best Regards,
I am proud to say that our commitment to
doing business responsibly and supporting
our social environment has not only remained
intact over the years, but has become even

the 57 member states of the OIC.
“The OIC Expo provided

“We were walking down
the street after finishing
one of our meetings in the
area when we noticed some
flames and heavy smoke
coming from the back yard
of one of the factory in the
vicinity. Without losing any
time we informed the factory
owner of the possible fire
and rushed with some of his
managers to douse the flame
from spreading at the site,”
said Rashid Al Leem, HFZA
Director General, about the
daring rescue act.
“So we went around,
grabbed the water hose,
started
spraying
where
we saw the fire,” Al Leem
explained. “But alas, to our
astonishment, we found
that there was limited access
to the water to put out the
fire. We quickly realized this
and instructed everyone not
to panic but to join us by
throwing mud and sand on
the fire,” he added.

Al Leem, in his acceptance
speech, said he is honoured
to receive this prestigious
award and the recognition
that goes with it. He urged
that the enthusiasm of youth
was crucial to see any benefits
on climate change. He said
that it is not enough to merely
communicate the sustainability
message to youth, but it is
imperative that it invokes them
to think, analyse and question
their existing behaviour.
This
quick
thinking
saved the rapidly-spreading
fire from reaching the
neighbouring premises and
was deeply appreciated
by the factory owner and
workers who thanked HFZA
team for their timely help. “If
these visitors and everyone
else didn’t react as quickly
as they did, the result would
have been catastrophic,” said
one of the factory worker.

HFZA NEWS
Successful participation at 13th OIC Expo
maritime city
The emirate of Sharjah
has been associated with
maritime trading in the Gulf for
centuries. Today, that proud
tradition is maintained through
its strategically located three
modern sea ports – Port Khalid
and Hamriyah on the West
coast on the Arabian Gulf and
Khor Fakkan on the East coast
on the Gulf of Oman - all of
which are owned and controlled
by the Government of Sharjah’s
Department of Seaports and
Customs.
Sharjah ports are capable
of handling a wide variety of
tonnage ranging from tankers,
container vessels, Ro-Ro ships,
reefer ships, passenger ships,
heavy lift ships, jack up rigs,
bulk carriers and a multitude of
smaller vessels - for which the
terminals are equipped with
the latest ship-shore gantries
and modern yard equipment.
Major Shipping Lines calling at
these ports include United Arab
Shipping Company (UASC),
CMA-CGM, CSAV, Hanjin, Sea
Consortium, China Shipping,
Hapag Lloyd, to name a few.
Port Khalid
Port Khalid is regarded as one
of the most important multipurpose ports in the region. The
deep water port opened in 1975
and was the first in the UAE to
offer modern container shoreside gantry cranes and Ro-Ro
facilities, as well as a free trade
4
terminal. The port’s facilities
today consist of 21 berths and
one oil terminal, with a variety
of shipping assets, ranging from
general, reefer, dry, liquid and
bulk cargo to container and oil
and offshore support services.
The deepening of berths is
currently underway to cater for
deeper draft vessels.
Port Khorfakkan
Port Khorfakkan is one of
the world’s leading container
transhipment port. Its location
on Sharjah’s Indian coast
outside the sensitive Straits of
Hormuz and close to the main
east-west shipping routes,
makes it an obvious choice
for shipping lines with large
transhipment volumes, who
also require easy access to
the UAE hinterland. The only
natural deepwater harbour in
the Gulf region, it has 4 berths
serviced by 14 container gantry
cranes and a multitude of shore
side
handling
equipment,
ensuring
rapid
vessel
turnaround for time sensitive
liner operators. A major berth
extension project is currently
under way.
Hamriyah Port
Hamriyah Port is located
in HFZ and was initially built
to handle exports of liquefied
petroleum gas (LPG) produced
at the Sajja Gas Field in the
emirate. Equipped with state-
of-the-art facilities and modern
technology, the Hamriyah port
has several berthing and unberthing facilities, tug and pilot
boats and can accommodate
very large vessels with a length
of up to 230 meters and draft
up to 14 meters. Principal
deepwater
port
activities
include petrochemical exports
and general cargo trade.
Over the past years HFZA
has invested considerably in
the modernization of Hamriyah
Port and its infrastructure. The
inner harbour project, at a cost
of Dhs350 million, was one of
the biggest ever undertaken by
the Free Zone. It required the
dredging of the existing main
channel to a depth of nine
metres and the excavation of
more than five million cubic
metres of sand, rock and soil,
to create two basins, one five
metres deep, and the other
seven metres deep - a big boost
to maritime support services
including ship repairs, dry
docks and minor ship building.
HAMRIYAH
MARITIME CITY
The Maritime City of
Hamriyah Free Zone, and one
of its 7 Magnificent Zones, is
systematically pursuing its
strategy of globalising as the
region’s premier shipbuilding,
ocean
engineering,
maintenance and repairing
center for various vessels,
containers and players.
“The growth of the shipping
industry is constantly on the
rise, especially in West Asia,
and HFZ is proposing to be the
most cost-effective maritime
destination in the region,”
says Rashid Al Leem, Director
General, HFZA. “Our aim is
to give prospective customers
from the shipbuilding and
marine equipment industry
concentrated access to the
world markets from Hamriyah
Maritime City and at the same
time give active ship and port
management companies in the
GCC region easier access to the
global market for ship building
and marine technologies from
the same place”.
Al Leem added: “Hamriyah
port is part of the Free Zone, and
benefits from a natural deepwater draught, and is already
proving attractive to industry.
The port is furnished with
dedicated berths for liquefied
petroleum gas (LPG), a refinery
for petrochemical goods, and a
diesel berth, as well as boasting
its own bunkering facilities.
Having these specialised berths
at Hamriyah Free Zone is a
value added service for our
customers, because there is very
little transportation required to
their on-site facilities and the
complementary nature is an
element we’re keen to market.”
TOP-3 2011 awards presented at a glittering ceremony
Hamriyah
Free
Zone
Authority hosted its annual
‘TOP-3 2011’ Awards ceremony
at the Sharjah Chamber of
Commerce
and
Industry
(SCCI) headquarters in Sharjah
(UAE), honoring its investors,
suppliers and service providers
for meeting the Free Zone’s
exacting business requirements,
as well as consistently delivering
outstanding
service
and
community value. In all fortyfive companies and individuals
in 16 categories were recognized
for their excellence.
Approximately 250 senior
government officials, business
leaders and representatives of
various companies attended the
event, which included keynote
remarks by HFZA Director
General Rashid Al Leem, who
emphasized
how
business
partnerships have made a
substantial
contribution
to
HFZ’s growth, reputation, and
sustainability leadership.
“We work hard within
Hamriyah Free Zone to achieve
excellence in every aspect of our
service, and this is not something
we can do alone. These awards
allow us to recognize those
business partners who have
helped us to achieve our goal
of not only making our Free
Zone
increasingly
efficient
and competitive in an ethical
and sustainable way, but also
in maintaining a high level of
delivery throughout the year,” Al
Leem said.
“Congratulations
to
each
of you and the many people
behind the scenes who worked
diligently every day to earn this
recognition,” he declared. “Those
partners who we have formally
recognised today all have at least
one thing in common and that is
their willingness to engage with
us and to go the extra mile in our
quest for excellence,” he added.
The awards are driven and
allocated based on the findings of
Hamriyah Free Zone’s ‘Partner
Performance
Management
System’. The system provides
performance feedback from
across the Free Zone covering
its six key performance pillars
of: business ethics and conduct,
social
and
environmental
practices, financial performance,
technical capability, delivery
and quality of service as well as
the strength of the commercial
relationship.
Al Leem paid tribute to the
award winners and said the
future was bright for those
who shared Hamriyah Free
Zone’s vision for meeting world
standards, especially as the Free
Zone was preparing to become
an important cog in Sharjah’s
and UAE’s industrial growth and
development.
“We’ll go for the best or
nothing. We’ll demand that of
ourselves and of you,” Al Leem
stated in reference to HFZ’s view
on the further development of
the cooperation with its partners.
“In the end, it is a win-win cycle,
helping both us and the partners
to grow our businesses,” he
concluded.

HFZA and Technopark sign MoU
To share best practices for advancement of entrepreneurship in IT sector
Hamriyah Free Zone Authority has
signed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) agreement with Technopark of
Kerala (India) which seeks to create a
basis for cooperation and collaboration
between the two sides for the advancement
of entrepreneurship in IT sector in both
geographies through the mutual sharing of
knowledge, experience and best practices,
thus allowing both sides to benefit from each
other’s respective work and involvement.
Rashid Al Leem, Director General, HFZA
and Mervin Alexander, CEO Technopark,
signed the MoU in a ceremony that took
place at the Technopark headquarters
in Kerala, in the presence of senior
management from both sides.
Launched in 1990, Technopark is India’s
first and one of the biggest technology
park dedicated to electronics, software,
and other Information Technology (IT)
ventures. The park currently serves as
home to over 225 companies, which employ
more than 35,000 professionals.
As per the agreement signed, both parties
will do all in their power to facilitate interactions
at the industry level as well as share business
opportunities, technical expertise, training
and development. The MoU also provides
opportunities for Technopark firms to reach
Middle East and Africa markets through the
Hamriyah Free Zone.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Al
Leem said: “India’s development and
contribution in world’s information
technology sector is of highest reputation.
We commend the vision of the Government
of India to fuel investments in igniting the
Rashid Al Leem and Mervin Alexander at the MoU signing ceremony.
growth of IT sector all over the country and
are pleased to have got this opportunity
to partner with Technopark and hope this
alliance will further strengthen the IT
association between the two sides and open
up doors of new opportunities for SME’s
of both free zones by way of new markets,
joint ventures, sharing of best practices and
technology collaborations etc.”
He added: “It was a valuable opportunity
for the both sides to reflect on the
challenges and opportunities we face in
serving our respective constituencies. I am
happy we did more than just talk, and laid
the groundwork for a formal memorandum
of understanding (MOU) between us, which
has now been signed and is in effect.”
Mervin Alexander, CEO, Technopark
said: “The collaboration is part of
Technopark’s effort to establish and
strengthen relations with other countries
and provide a conducive environment
for overseas companies to set up shop,
thrive and grow in business. The MoU is
a fruition of our efforts in this direction.
It was in February 2011 that a high-level
delegation from HFZA led by Al Leem
had come to Technopark and they were
extremely impressed by what we were
offering and further discussions led to the
decision to share the best practices of both
organisations for mutual benefit.”
