Celebrating the Class of 2014
Archbishop Alter High School is a co-educational,
comprehensive Catholic school that is committed
to challenging students to reach their full potential
by providing academic excellence in a
Christ-centered environment.
3
Taking Pride
in Appearance
It is hard for me to believe that I am entering
my tenth year as President of Alter High
School. As the saying goes, “Tempus Fugit.”
“Time flies when you are having fun.” It is fun
to work at Alter High School. I can honestly
say that I look forward to coming to school
every day.
One of the things that really impresses me is
how well our buildings and grounds look for
now being 50 years old. This is a real tribute
to our facilities and finance personnel here
at Alter. Taking good care of buildings and
grounds is stewardship at its best.
Alter is well known in the community for
our excellence in faith-formation, academics,
athletics, and the arts. And these are the
reason for our existence and our mission.
But our students also need and deserve the
physical facilities to maintain and continue
this excellence.
4
T
o enhance our faith formation, our new indoor chapel is now five years old
with the stained-glass windows and last year we added an outdoor Rosary Chapel that
is well received by our students and the neighborhood. To enhance our academics, our
new science labs are now five years old with the addition of a STEM lab this summer. To
enhance our athletic program, our fields have been turfed. To enhance our arts and music
program, we are in the process of raising funds for an Arts Center between the school
and Seton Hall. Our arts and music programs are first class and deserve a state of the art
facility. This would enable the weight room to go to the Auxiliary Gym and an AlumniBooster Center to be attached to the Arts Center in the eastern section of Seton Hall.
There were 8 projects this summer: a new STEM lab; Voice-over IP Phone System;
Phase III Security System; Time Warner Cable System upgrade; Ash Tree removal(16
trees); Projector Project in 20 classrooms; Concrete Replacement on curbs; and Media
Center(Library) upgrade. A ninth Energy Lighting upgrade was delayed until a later time.
As we continue our excellence in all of our programs, we need to continue our pride in
the appearance and functionality of our buildings and grounds. Alter students deserve
the best.
This is where the Alter alumni come in. We need the alumni to help us maintain the Alter
pride. We encourage the alumni to be as generous as you can to the Annual and Capital
Campaigns. And since many of our first graduates are now in their sixties in age, we
encourage them to consider a planned gift to Alter. Scholarship funds and financial aid
are needed to help our students attend Alter.
Excellence comes at a price and a sacrifice. As you have been so generous to Alter in
the past, I encourage you to be generous to Alter in the present as we create our future.
As Alter was there for you during your years here helping you prepare for your future,
I encourage you to be as generous as you can in helping us endow Alter with a bright
future.
As a priest and as a president, I know that I cannot ever say “THANK YOU” enough so
let me end by expressing my gratitude to you for your generosity to Alter High School
and keeping the ALTER PRIDE alive and well for the future.

21 of the 23 events. The Academic Team concluded their
season by playing in the Western Regional
Tournament. The top two teams qualified
for state. Alter placed fourth in a field of 16.
They defeated Troy, Oakwood, and Fenwick
to reach fourth place and outlasted CJ in
the tournament. Congratulations!
campus ministry
Alter High School led a blessing of its new
Prayer Garden located in front of campus
on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. Father Jim
Manning, President of Alter High School,
offered the blessing and included the public,
the Board of Directors, the senior class,
and the residents of the neighborhood.
Underclassmen attended other services
offered that morning.
October was the month of the Rosary, and
it was the perfect time to dedicate and
bless the new prayer garden created around
the mysteries of the rosary. The garden
features stunning artwork on five pillars
representing the five mysteries from local
artist Suzanne Ley, a former Alter parent.
William Schoen, Alter’s longtime Director
of Facilities, was the overall visionary for the
garden. Shoen included plantings around
the garden to tie into the overall theme of
Mary.
