Connie McCartney is an avid participant of lifelong learning. Since his retirement, Connie has been an active bird watcher, wood carver and bug collector. A survivor of a stroke, he is now a watercolor artist. A widower, Connie picked up his wife’s paint set and joined the first watercolor class taught by Jean Cook. After announcing he struggles with a degree of color blindness, he and instructor Jean Cook set to work. Since then, Connie has added ink to his paintings. "I’ve learned I still have a lot to learn." is what you will hear from Connie and he continues to keep learning every day. Loose lead heeling is a practice to keep your dog focused on you and exercises and avoiding distractions. Dogs and owners will brush up on heeling skills, recalls and stay exercises with distractions. Dogs must be at least 6 months old and have previously attended a beginner obedience class. Must be current on all vaccinations, Rabies, Distemper/Parvo and Kennel Cough. Wednesdays, August 31, September 7 & 14, 6:307:30 p.m., $59 per dog's family. Instr: Lucy Kerby. CODE: 9400 CG100 Dealing with Dog Aggression Do you or someone you know have a dog that acts aggressively toward you, your family or friends? Has your dog growled, snapped or bitten anyone? Does your dog snarl or bark in a threatening manner at home or in public? If you are having a difficult time controlling your dog and have a need for some training tips and techniques to correct bad behavior, this twohour discussion on aggression and behavior issues in dogs is just what you may need. Instructor Lucy Kerby has over 35 years of experience training dogs and working with behavior issues. Bring notepaper; this is a one session class. Thursday, October 6, 6:30-8:30 p.m., $29. Instr: Lucy Kerby. CODE: 9400 CG101 Arts & Crafts Basic Miniature Painting The miniature holiday villages are beautiful but what if you would like to see a more personalized touch added to the scene. Why not join us for an introduction into the hobby of painting plastic miniatures? You will discover the techniques of preparing the model, priming, choosing colors, dry brushing and basing. This class is not only for the traditional figures but also the war-games or diorama scenes. Bring your figurines or start out with one provided for at the start of class. Beginning Crochet Fall is on the way and also winter cold. Now is the time to think about learning a new craft to keep your fingers and mind busy. Would you like to make your own Christmas gifts this year? Join Sharon Rinke in learning how to crochet. We'll cover how to crochet a chain, single, half-double, double and triple stitch. We will also learn a shell stitch edging. Emphasis will be on finger placement, yarn tension and how to change directions. Garage sales and thrift stores are a great source of supplies. Old knit sweaters and afghans can be unraveled and the yarn used for practice projects. Basic pattern reading and yarn label reading will also be included. CODE: 6010 CG101 Absolute Beginning Quilting A quilt can be yours for the making in this class. Learn how to assemble a halfsquare triangle quilt creating the flashing lights quilt (pictured). Don’t worry, this class is for the ABSOLUTE beginner. You will learn how to pick out tools and fabric and how to use the tools and create a half-square triangle block. Learn how to understand and read patterns and put your quilt together. A supply list will be available upon registration. Register early, there is a class limit of 8 students! Students must have completed the beginning crochet class or know basic crochet stitches. We will explore the many types of granny squares that are out there and work toward making a small projects, learning to connect the squares in a pleasing pattern. Learn what fabrics work together for braided rugs. At the end of class you will create a small coaster, but will go home with instructions to complete your rug. Bring three different colors of cotton fabric one yard long, scissors, ruler, needle and thread. If you would like to prepare your fabric ahead of time, please cut into 1-inch strips. Wednesday, September 28, 6-9 p.m., $29. Instr: Debbie Butler. CODE: 6250 CG102 Discover Palette Knife Painting Have you ever wondered how to a painting with a palette knife? Well now is your chance to learn. In this class we will explore the process of using either Acrylic or Oil paints with a palette knife. This class is for beginners and anyone who wants to learn the process. Bring your paints and palette knives; Jean provides the surface for you to paint on. A supply list will be provided upon registration. Mondays, October 3, 10 & 17, 6-8 p.m., $59 Instr: Jean Cook. CODE: 1150 CG102 Faux Rosewood Wreath Calling all book lovers! Adorn your room with this beautiful faux rosewood wreath made from pages of used books. Repurpose books and save them from the landfill. You will be guided through the steps needed to make a beautiful rosewood wreath. From cutting out and developing "rosebuds" to gluing them to the foam wreath, this ambitious craft will develop into a unique accessory and interesting conversation starter for any home! Students need to bring 2-3 old books that are 5-6” wide and an 11” foam wreath to class. Wednesday, October 5, 6-9 p.m., $29. Instr. Stefanie Green. CODE: 6350 CG102 Learning to Read a Crochet Pattern Have you tried to teach yourself to crochet and learned the basics, but do not know or understand how to read a pattern? Sharon Rinke will help you further your skills. We will learn to read several written pattern styles and will do some practice work to get a better understanding. Pre-registration is required for this day long class; lunch is the responsibility of the student. Bring 1 skein medium weight (4) acrylic yarn for practice, crochet hooks in various sizes and paper and pen to take additional notes. Saturday, October 8, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., $34. Instr: Sharon Rinke. CODE: 6010 CG102 4 email [email protected] Natural Broom Making There is nothing more heartwarming than a small handcrafted kitchen broom tucked in the corner of your home. You will use broomcorn which is a variety of sorghum that is grown for making brooms. These brooms are useful, natural and a beautiful piece of art. You will not want to leave these brooms in the closet. Learn about the natural fibers used in this timeless technique of making brooms. Handles and necessary supplies will be provided, but students should bring a strong utility knife. This broom is suitable for a child, grandma’s helper, and great for sweeping a camper or small area of your home. Saturday, October 8, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $38. Instr: Joann Nietfeld. CODE: 6350 CG101 Hairpin Lace Would you like to learn an old craft? A special loom is used to create hairpin lace. Students will make a small project by the time class is finished. CODE: 6010 CG103 Unfinished Projects Are you constantly interrupted and can't finish your craft projects? Join us for an extended weekend at Central Community College where you can spread out and work on your craft project undisturbed. Your weekend will begin Friday evening at 4:30 p.m. and will conclude on Saturday at 5 p.m. This is a great opportunity to build camaraderie with your crochet, painting, scrapbook, quilting or other crafting friends. This weekend does not include meals but feel free to bring your own snacks and meals. There is a refrigerator and microwave on site with additional space to plug in a crock pot. Friday/Saturday, October 14 & 15 or November 4 & 5, Friday 5-9 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-5 p.m., $7 per student, per weekend. Fabric bowls are a great way to use your excess fabric and create a special decor piece for your home. Come and enjoy this great class which in turn can be a stash buster for you! CODE: 6250 CG100 Pushing Your Boundaries in Watercolor This class is designed to help beginners learn what watercolor is all about. More advanced students will explore new directions to push their skill level. Advanced students will work on a project while beginners learn how to use watercolors. CODE: 1150 CG103 Christmas Projects-Quick Gifts Everyone loves a homemade Christmas ornament or gift. Join Sharon Rinke for several evenings of Christmas fun. You must have completed the Beginning Crochet class or know how to do basic crochet stitches to join this class. We will make several small ornaments and one or two small gifts with patterns you can take and work on your own. Some homework will be required in order to finish the projects. CODE: 6010 CG105 Arm Knitted Infinity Scarf Get a great workout and learn how to make an amazing infinity scarf! In this course you will learn how to create an infinity scarf using a simple arm knitting technique. This simple method is accessible to everyone, as it requires no previous knowledge of knitting. Coming 'armed' with two skeins of yarn will allow every participant to leave class with a beautiful arm knitted infinity scarf, which friends and colleagues will certainly envy! CODE: 6050 CG100 Creating Decorative Fabric Yo-Yos Who doesn’t love the delicate and colorful design of a fabric yo-yo? Easy to make and worth using up your scraps, yo-yo designs are flexible for any item you want to create! Whether you want to make a doily or embellish a shirt, the design is up to you. Learn how to format a spreadsheet and what the specific functions will be in your spreadsheets; how to use Excel for budgeting, vehicle maintenance and other records. Course will touch briefly on the benefits and uses of mail merge with Excel. This is an entry level class for the beginner who wants to know more about spreadsheets. Facebook is a wonderful way to connect with family and friends. Students will need to know how to access their email from another computer or have their password information available to open their own account. Wednesday, September 28, 6-9 p.m., $36. Instr: Rae Osenbaugh. CODE: 8150 CG101 Beginning Fearless Computing Conquer your fear and discover how easy it is to work with a computer. This is an entry level class for adults who would like to know more about their computer and will help you take the fear out of fearless! In this class you will learn simple changes to help you move forward to incorporate Paleo changes into a healthy lifestyle. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Basic Life Support training reinforces healthcare professionals' understanding of the importance of early CPR and defibrillation, basic steps of performing CPR, relieving choking, and using an AED; and the role of each link in the Chain of Survival. Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED This course meets the regulatory requirements for child care workers in all 50 United States. It teaches providers and others to respond to and manage illnesses and injuries in a child or infant in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. It covers the four steps of first aid and first aid skills such as finding the problem, stopping bleeding, bandaging and using an Epinephrine pen, as well as child/infant CPR/AED. Saturday, August 13, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., $65. Fitness Fencing for Fitness and Fun! Get in shape and have fun while you learn the basics of “Olympic Style” Foil Fencing, a great activity for individuals aged 10 years and up, as well as for the whole family and all ability levels. This elegant, prestigious and modern combative sport is based on a tradition which challenges both the body and mind through an effective blend of patience, determination and discipline while developing fitness, agility, speed, strength, coordination, balance and timing. Fencing is a great cardiovascular exercise, and is an activity that can be continued life-long. Join the fun! Students must wear sweatpants that cover the legs and tennis shoes. Certification courses require pre-registration with a minimum of 6 students. Classes are free of charge through grants offered by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Sports Injuries - August 29 Discussion of various sports related injuries including treatment options. Epi/Albuterol - September 6 Review the Pathophysiology of anaphylaxis and its implications in airway management. Recognize signs and symptoms of life threatening asthma and anaphylaxis and perform the appropriate treatments with epinephrine (EPI) and Albuterol nebulizer treatment. Location: Saint Paul Fire House, pre-registration required by September 2. CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) - September 21 Review of respiratory anatomy and physiology including the Pathophysiology of respiratory distress and assessment of common respiratory emergencies. You will then learn about the CPAP delivery system and the protocol for administering CPAP therapy to a patient in Respiratory Distress. Time: 6-10 p.m., pre-registration required by September 16. Chest Pain and 12 Lead EKG - October 4 Assessment of chest pain and the acquisition and transmission of a 12-lead EKG. Advanced Airway - October 8 This is a review of the Respiratory system and teaches the insertion and removal of the Combi-tube and King airway devices for patients who experience respiratory arrest. Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., preregistration required by October 5, 2016. School Shootings - October 19 Are we ready if it happens in our hometown? Responding to mass casualties and the dangers we don’t see. Location: Dannebrog Fire Hall Management of the Rural Trauma Patient - November 1 Review of basic A&P, immobilization, bleeding control and airway adjuncts and their uses during trauma. Will review trauma situations and necessary modifications in treatment or access unique to rural traumatic injuries. Child Abuse, Neglect, Trauma - November 9 Discuss abuse and neglect situations in relation to patient care considerations. Examine how trauma is different for pediatrics compared to adults. Location: Saint Paul Fire House Adult & Pediatric Patient Assessment & Skills November 16 Assessment and treatment of adult and pediatric patients, how they are different and some techniques for handling the difficult patient. Location: Giltner Fire Hall Well Being of the EMT - December 6 An EMT’s job is stressful and dangerous. Not only do we have to worry about our patients but also what we encounter while on the scene. This class is an insight to scene safety, personal protection, and how to handle stress as an EMT. PHTLS Certification Prehospital Trauma Life Support October 8 & 9, 2016 $120 This class is designed for the healthcare provider responding to trauma patients in a prehospital environment. The program is based on a prehospital trauma care philosophy, stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. This may require an approach to the trauma patient that varies from traditional treatment modalities. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. Course Prerequisites: Students must bring the following materials to class: PHTLS Provider Manual - 8th Edition ISBN 13: 9781284041736 Completed PHTLS course pretest Health Services and Safety It’s important to wear loose, comfortable clothing for these classes. You will be practicing skills that require working on your hands and knees, bending, standing and lifting. If you have any physical conditions that might prevent these activities, please tell one of the instructors. Equipment can be adjusted if you have back, knee or hip problems. If you have recently had any type of infectious disease, including upper respiratory infection or open sores on your hands, mouth or face, it is imperative to defer class until you are well. Nursing Assistant (NA) Basic nursing knowledge and skills course for the nursing assistant in a health care setting; course approved by the Nebraska Department of Health. This course is a prerequisite for the Nursing program. Monday-Friday, August 22-October 19 or October 20-December 16, 7:45-10:30 a.m. or 12:15-3 p.m. or Tuesdays & Thursdays, August 23-December 15, 6-9 p.m., $382, includes textbook and in-state tuition only. Medication Aide-Nursing Home (MA) AMLS Certification Advanced Medical Life Support January 7 & 8, 2017 Health Care Training $120 The course emphasizes the use of scene size-up, history, interactive group discussion on potential treatment strategies, and physical exam to systematically rule out and consider possibilities and probabilities in treating patients’ medical crises. The course offers an initial assessment-based approach that progresses to a diagnostic-based approach to quickly develop the best treatment plan. formed a partnership to offer opportunities for students to take college classes while they are still in high school. High School Articulation is an alignment of high school curriculum to Central Community College (CCC) curriculum. Articulated courses allow students to earn CCC college credit at no cost to the student if they earn an A or a B in the high school course. Over 70 schools across our area offer a variety of courses covering several career pathways; please contact your high school counselor to see which courses are available at your school. Early College classes are offered for credit through Central Community College. These courses are offered on campus, in your building or as an online course. Students are required to meet college admissions requirements by taking the ACT, ASSET, or COMPASS test. Transferability of Early College courses is determined by the receiving institution. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for adults whose first language is not English. General Educational Development (GED®) classes for adults who haven’t completed a high school diploma or home-schooled youth. Students can earn an official State of Nebraska High School Diploma by successfully completing a series of computer-based GED® tests. The Grand Island Adult Education office and classes are located in rooms 95, 100, 101, and 102 of College Park, 3180 W. Highway 34. Students must come to our office to make an appointment for placement tests before starting classes. Students must be 16 or older and officially withdrawn from school. 16 and 17-year-old students must have the proper paperwork allowing them to study for a GED® diploma preapproved by the Nebraska Department of Education. A $20 registration fee is due a minimum of two weeks prior to orientation. ESL orientations are in July, October, January and April. GED® orientations are held the first Thursday of every month at either 9 a.m. or 6 p.m. For information about classes in other communities, go to www.cccneb.edu/ae. GED® testing is computer-based and official tests are taken at certified Pearson Vue testing centers. The GED® tests cost $30 per each of the four tests for a total of $120. A Nebraska high school graduate, on average, earns $5,423 more per year than a high school dropout. Apply that to the 163,000 Nebraskans (9.9% of the population) without a diploma, and that adds up to $886 million in lost wages. That’s $886 million each year that isn’t being spent by consumers, isn’t being made by businesses, and isn’t being taxed. Volunteer tutors 18 years or older are welcome. To secure your place in a class, payment should be received at least one week prior to the class start date unless other arrangements have been made. If you are unable to attend a class you’ve registered for, please let us know prior to the first class meeting so your place can be filled. No refunds will be given after the first class for classes that meet 1 or 2 times; none after the second class for classes that meet three or more times.
