Adult Ski & Snowboard
Going Downhill League
For many members of the Club, participating in and training for races has been a great way to make friends (and friendly rivals),
improve their skiing or snowboarding and have a great time in the process. The Going Down Hill League, commonly called the GDHL,
is Craigleith’s adult racing house league. It was established for skiers but in recent years a number of snowboarders have also
participated. Racers aged 16 and over are eligible, although most are well over 16 and some are in their 70’s. Although friendly
competition runs deep at the GDHL, the league is highly focused on making sure that all are enjoying the experience, that all skiers
feel welcome and included in the life of the league and that the combination of coached training and racing offer skiers of all ages
and ability an environment focused on improvement and confidence.
The league offers a series of weekend races in January and February with individual scoring and (for skiers) team scoring and hosts
an opening Calcutta evening and an awards dinner to close the racing season. Racers have a wide range of ages and abilities. The
schedule is normally seven races, three giant slaloms, three slaloms, and one super G. Races are normally scheduled to start at
either 10:00 am or 1:00 pm on either Saturday or Sunday. Each racer may take two runs in each race, the better of which is counted
for the day’s results. The second run is held on the same course, immediately after the first. Each racer’s best four results are
counted towards the overall individual and team championships.
Before the season, each racer is ranked in sequence. Number one is normally the previous year’s individual champion. Rankings are
based on past results when possible, or on other information available to the GDHL committee. If you are new to the GDHL, please
complete the questionnaire that is part of the online registration form to help determine your ranking. Racers are then assigned to
teams by the GDHL committee. Teams normally consist of 8 to 12 members, depending on the number of racers participating.
Assignments are based on rankings, with the result that each team will have the same average ranking of its members. Some racers,
especially those who may be unable to race regularly, prefer not to be assigned to a team. If this is you let us know that you prefer
not to be placed on a team by completing the appropriate section on the questionnaire that is part of the online registration form.
The GDHL committee has established a website at http://gdhl.org/, which provides much more information. Be sure to sign up on
the site to receive the GDHL e-mail newsletters, and read old ones on the site.”

U12 WEEKEND PROGRAMS:
The U12 Program is designed specifically for 10 and 11 year olds who show a keen inclination towards racing and demonstrate very strong skiing
skills. The program aims to elevate each individual's technical skill level through increased volume of skiing, diversity on and off snow experiences
including “age and stage” appropriate physical and mental training and the introduction to a structured competition. The technical model of this
program is firmly based on Alpine Canada Alpin’s AIM2WIN document with participation in a limited number of competitions (6 days) on the
schedule for this age group. Some additional educational opportunities are to be made available throughout the season in the form of introduction
dryland training, ski tuning and nutrition clinics. Speed suits, GS or SL suits are NOW allowed in this age category.
**Regardless of being part of the CORE A-LA-CARTE or CORE INCLUSIVE programs, all U12 athletes will still be required to be assessed on their
performance over Christmas camp and in the time trials prior to the 9 week program to help establish training and racing groups/pods of similar
skill sets and ability. This will allow for and foster an effective teaching and learning environment. CORE A-LA-CARTE and CORE INCLUSIVE athletes
may train and race together based on their ability.

Junior Racing Programs
U21 University Program
U21 University Program: This program is for all former J/FIS racers who are at University/College and may be back at times throughout the season.
U21 races will be offered and athletes can compete and be represented and coached by their home Club! We ask if you could register now so we
can track how many athletes may be interested and can plan accordingly. There is no upfront charge for this program and the only fees will be their
AOA fees to become a carded athlete and have the appropriate coverage. There will be a daily rate (additional training fee) on a “pay as you play”
basis to help cover coach’s costs etc. We hope this will help keep our former athletes closer to home throughout the winter months! For any
questions please contact Dave Campbell [email protected] or Dan Hadley [email protected]
