Here at camp fiver we have rainy
days and sunny days. Rainy days
have had positive and negative effects on people. On June 28, 2013
our creek over flooded. It reached as
far as the nurse’s office! I, Natoya
Hutson interviewed a few people to
get their opinion. Some of their opinions were good and bad.
Me: What do you think of rainy days?
Mary: I think they stink, but this is the
time we could be creative on the
things we get to do.
Me : What do of think of rainy days?
Erica (kitchen): I feel unaffected by
the rain. Its kind of nice, its a lot
cooler in the kitchen. But its louder
because we have more kids coming
in.
Me: What do you think of rainy days?
Laura: It reminds me of home, but
camp is much better when it’s sunny.
Life is like a rainbow, You need both
the sun and rain to make its colors
appear.
From the Editor’s Desk
By Laura Jewels
To all the Fivers of
Session One, 2013:
It is my pleasure to present the first
Hi-Fiver of 2013. The
dedication and creativity of all those who
have contributed to the
newsletter has been
amazing. These campers have worked
throughout the twelve
days to produce a
newsletter that will be
entertaining, thoughtful
and informative. Reporters have worked
tirelessly to bring you
all the news and excitement from Camp Fiver;
they have worked during classes, during evening activities, during
camp outs and even
during meal times to
ensure that this newsletter will be the most
exciting newsletter yet!
During the classes the
reporters learned how
to write articles, how to
conduct interviews and
how to use photographs to best support
articles. Throughout
their time working for
the newsletter, all reporters have been en-
Holly’s Creativity Rap
By LEAD Girls
Being creative, playing by your own
rules. Your creativity makes everyone
drool.
You can be creative by creating different things, or you could be creative by
imagining things you want to be
But don't keep it to yourself, show it so
everyone can see.
Being creative is the best thing you can
be
With distinct individuality you'll create a
masterpiece
Knowing what you want and putting
your mind to it
If you put thoughts into actions, there's
no way you can't get through it.
Spread creativity all over the world so
everyone can see
The individual in themselves that they
could be!
Creativity comes from within
Be the individual you want to be
Don’t let anyone get in your way
Just follow your dreams
To be self confident do your own thing
and just be yourself, maybe your own
way
A dance, a song, you show it every day
Show your creative side all today.
thusiastic and committed, so thank you!
We would also like to
thank the staff and
campers for making
this session so memorable and fantastic.
Without the support of
other Fivers this newsletter would not have
been possible and we
owe you our gratitude.
It has been my pleasure to edit the newsletter, and working with
these reporters has
been amazing- thank
you to all that have
contributed.
An Interview with Larry
Gellar
By Nakacia Hutson
We spoke to Larry about his shirts and
his teaching here at Fiver, here is the
interview:
Q. How long have you been teaching?
A. I've been teaching swimming at camp
for 10 summers and public speaking for
8 summers. I have been doing the
handshakes for 10 summers.
Q. What do you enjoy the most?
A.I enjoy seeing wonderful children and
trying to make meaningful contributions
to their lives with swimming and public
speaking.
Q. When did you learn to swim and how
old were you? Why continue
swimming?
A. I learned to swim when I
was 9 years old. I swam on
teams in high school, college
and YMCA. Swimming is a
great sport to help you to keep
in shape.
History of the
Long-lasting
Bell: An
Interview with
Mary
By Nakacia Hutson
It's been here as long as I can remember. There had once been a
time when a bee's nest was in
there. Also when the was no rope
because the rope fell off.
No one knows where the bell
came from, or how long it's been
standing. It has a few years left,
but a day will come when the bell
shall not ring anymore. but today
or tomorrow is not the day. Let's
hear it for the long lasting bell.
A. Probably around 7 years ago. I
came up with it because I wanted
something to encourage children
to believein themselves. Si se
puede is a very important and
famous slogan. I did not make it
up but I did add it to 'Yes I can'.
Q. How do you think your service
at Camp Fiver affects the campers?
A. I hope they remember some of
the things I tell them over and
over, like 'Yes I can', 'I can't do it
yet', 'louder', and 'smile and show
your magic'
Q. Where did you get the quotes
from?
A. I make them up, they're based
on what I think is important.
Q. Where and when did you
learn 'Yes I can' and 'Si se
puede'?

Sports Section Interviews
At Fiver there are opportunities to
learn all kinds of sports and the HiFiver reporters wanted to get to know
those behind the sport: the teaching
counselors
Drum - teaching Soccer
Q. Hi Drum! How do you think the
class is going so far?
A. Classes are awesome, the players

their hands, it is called 'football' in
England after all!
Q. Is everybody enjoying the class?
A. Yes, i hope so! There seems to be
lots of smiling campers!
Q. What kind of every day skills does
soccer teach you?
A. Great question, I think soccer
teaches teamwork, communication
and coordination, all essential skills.
Keith - teaching football

A. It's going great, we are learning a
lot of concepts and everyone is supporting each other as a team, which
is awesome.

A. Everyone enjoys the class, and
By Elias Nalpantitis and Jashaun
we always try to end with a fun
activity
Q. What kind of everyday skills
does football teach you?
a. Football teaching respect and
teamwork-it helps to show how
sometimes working in a team can
be more fun and effective than
working as an individual
Junior - teaching basketball
Q. How do you think the class is
going so far?
A. Its amazing, the kids are responding well and learning how to
dribble correctly, how to pass and
how to jump correctly.

A. Yes, we do a drill called dunk
the ball which everyone loves, its a
fun game with the objective of getting the players to jump higher, it
works on skills as well as being
fun.
Q. What kind of everyday skills
does basketball teach you?
A. Basketball teaches you how to

have you been cooking?
A. I love cooking, whether it's for myself or for other people. I've been
cooking since I was 10 years old. I
Q. How do you think your service in
Fiver helps the camp?
A. If we had no kitchen there would be
no food, so we're important, and that
makes me happy.
Q.Do you enjoy the food here?
A. Yes, I wish I could make even more
different things, but there's just not
enough hours in the day!
Q. What's the best thing about working
in the kitchen?
A. It reminds me of my childhood
Larry - teaching swim and public
speaking
Q. How do you think the classes are
going so far?
A. The classes are going great, everyone understands that they can learn
some really important things, and this
has them interested.
Q. What kind of everyday skills does
swimming teach you?
A. It teaches that you can achieve
something with alot of work. You have
to put your mind to it and try hard in
order to learn. You have to be open
minded and open to learning.
Q. What do you think public speaking
classes teach you?
A. Public speaking teaches you how
to stand out and be noticed and
heard.
Some Steps To Stop
Bullying
By Justin Perez
Step1) Bullying needs to stop because
it hurts people and it’s not fiverly.

heart and feel sad.
Step3) Children in school, at home and
anywhere your child is is getting bullying.
Step4) Don’t be scared to tell a
adult, teacher, and your mom or dad that
you are getting bully.
Step5) Ask your bully to stop bullying

Instead the rain came

Sun is beautiful
Sometimes it forms a rainbow
When it drizzles
The sun helps nature and people
But I hope tomorrow's better
But if it's not it'll be the worst

The sun should shine
But not today
Tomorrow's another day
And I can't wait

Basszilla's Hungry
By Ryan Collins and Krisling Joseph
We can see the horses running by
there once was a bass in the lake
and the big whole blue sky
he became very hungry and wanted a cake
When the rain comes down
so he left his home in the water
the raindow fllies up.
to bake some cake with his father
All the kids running in the grass
but then he found out there were beavers
Let's not forget about the bass
and found out the biggest was Justin Bieber
Ohh how sometimes we wish
so then he ate all the beavers in the lake
That we didn't have so many fish.
but he never got his chocolate cake
The different ways we learn to swim
Sometimes I wish the lights would dim.

Valuable Team Players
Causes pain
Even though there are so many bugs
Kids cry
We all try to be Environmentalists
Makes you insane
We shall not use our fists
You think you're gonna die
Even though we don't want to try new things. And you'll never be the same
We try to be Risktakers and spread our wings
Here at Fiver we are a big happy family. The
Fivers are united.

It was the final seconds
of the game
had to get to the rim
the dunk was for the win
but it got blocked cause
I'm lame
Hollering at the officials

Poetry and Creative
Writing
By Natoya Hutson
I Natoya Hutson am part of the poetry and creative writing class. My
teachers are Manny and Jo. I interviewed each of my teachers and
asked them a few questions about
poetry and how it relates to them.
Me: What do you like about poetry?
Manny: Poetry gives me the freedom to say whatever I feel. It gives
me the ability to express myself
through a pen and a paper. It definitely helps me feel free.
Animals at Fiver
By Elias Nalpantitis and
Jashaun Mole
Here at Camp Fiver there are all
sorts of animals around. We
tracked down just a few of them to
see how they are enjoying camp so
far...
First, we talked to Nurse Cheryl
about her dog, Isis. Isis is a border
collie mix who Cheryl rescued
when Isis was young. Isis is now 7
years old, but still very playful!
Cheryl and her husband take care
of Isis throughout the year, and Isis
is loving being at camp with so
many friendly children to cuddle
her. Isis likes to hang out in the
cool basement when its hot, and is
really frightened of thunder storms,
when it storms she finds a safe
spot to hide!
Me: When did you start writing poetry?
Manny: I started at the age of 13 and
I continued after that.
Me: Why do you write poetry? Jo: I
write poetry because it’s a good way
to express myself, it’s also very
therapeutic and helps me relax after
a long day.
Me: Who and what inspires you to
write poetry?
Jo: Honestly, anything. People,
places and current events going on
in the U.S and in the world.
Fiver they are ridden during the day
for horsebarn classes, and then they
spend the rest of their time outside in
the pasture or inside in their stalls.
Once camp has finished, the horses
go back to the ranch in Vermont
where they live year round. At the
ranch there are over 500 other
horses which go to camps for the
Summer, and live on the ranch during
the other months.
At the office there is a rabbit called
camper. Camper lives in a hutch outside the office and will be at camp all
Summer. Camper was brought to
camp by nurse Cheryl, after her rabbit had babies. During camp Silke
and Mary look after camper, and
once camp has finished, camper will
be going to live with Silke.
Brad and Lauren look after the
horses in the horsebarn. There are
fiver horses in the horsebarn;

Basszilla
Basszilla is the legendary fish of Camp
Fiver. It is rumored to eat beavers and has
the ability to walk on land according to Alice, the environmental education instructor. It is considered to be a terrifying monstrous fish that can almost never be caught, and when you do, it
always escapes. However, after talking to Terry he told me the truth about
Basszilla’s diet. His favorite foods are actually frogs and crayfish. He doesn’t eat any beavers at all. His scale colors are green and he mainly comes
out at night.

Interview with Stephanie from TAP
How long have you been in step?
Stephanie: Only two days.
How do you like it so far?
It's only been two days but I enjoy it.
What do you enjoy most?
Teamwork- they help each other out to know the steps.
Why step?
I wanted to try something new, out of my comfort zone.
Did you accomplish that?
Yes, founded more & feel part of a team.

Startin' from the bottom, now the whole unit up in here
Startin' from the bottom of the hill

We don't like to do too much explaining
Stories stay the same through morning and the day

Cleans sweep for Bigwig and Hazel
By Mingma Sherpa
Have you ever gotten a bad clean sweep grade and think it isn't fair for
you? Well that happened to us we thought how clean would Big Wig/
Hazel be? We went to Big Wig and thought it wasn't clean and Hazel
was.
Big Wig
T-mac: “We clean Big Wig
every day"
Brad: “We clean once a
month"
T-mac: “12 out of 10"
Yasha: “7 1/2 out of 10"
We thought Big Wig would
get around a 6.
Environmental
Education with
Alice
By Samya Darby
There is a woman named Alice and her favorite animal in
nature is a jellyfish. She
started learning about nature
in sixth grade. She is terrified
by the rain. Did you know that
Alice is afraid of fish?! Her
favorite singer is the Rolling
Stones. Her favorite colors
are green and gray. The thing
she most wants to do in the
world is go out on adventures.
I thought that her favorite animal was a polar bear. So it
surprised me that it was a
jellyfish. I also thought she
started learning about nature
when she was in 1st grade.
Hazel
Laura: “6 out of 10"
Emily: “6 out of 10"
Laura: “Hazel is a lovely place to live in and
is better than Big Wig"
Taylor: “8 out of 10"
Laura: “There is a mystery person that
makes the cabin dirty"
We thought Hazel would get around an 8.
Who is Mr P?
by Javon Branch
We tried to find out who Mr. P is by asking 3 staff members questions about him, hoping they
might know, the questions were:
1)Who do you think Mr. P is?
2) Why does camp Fiver need Mr. P?
3) How did Mr. P come to Fiver?
First, we asked Drum:
1. I think Mr. P could be anyone, I suspect someone in camp.
2. Mr. P is the weatherman, we need to know the weather so we can plan the activities for
camp
3. Mr. P sled here on unicorns, I think. Every now and then Mr P can be seen sledding with
his unicorns, apparently they have a rainbow tail.
We then asked Keith:
1. I think Mr. P is the President of the United States
2. We need Mr. P because if we aren't aware of the weather we might not be able to play
sports and do classes
3. Mr. P came to find Fiver because he saw all the wonderful kids here and wanted to become part of it.
Alex also had an opinion:
1. I think I'm Mr. P.
2. Mr. P helps campers prepare for the day. Without mr P Camp Fiver would be a very dangerous place. He's awesome.
3. Mr. P gets to Fiver every day in his red truck. He drives here every morning.
