WHAT`S NEXT? - LDF Companies
3rd Trimester 2012 The Newsletter for the Employees of the LDF Companies WHAT’S NEXT? FROM THE DESK OF… each other because we are all dependent on each other. No one person can do the job themselves but as a team we can achieve great things. Larry Fleming, Chairman O nce again the holidays are upon us and 2012 is quickly coming to a close. Plans are being prepared for next year and there are many exciting things that will be included in them. But to not get the cart before the horse, we must focus on finishing this year with an aggressive and strong effort. Sales continue to be a challenge in both companies and that challenge will certainly be ever present until year’s end. The economy in our major markets continues to be sluggish with little or no signs of recovery and consumers have more and more products to choose from. We have to continue to work hard to make sure they are choosing ours. We have made significant improvements in our people development but more work remains. Nothing is more important than our continued investment in each other. We each need to challenge ourselves to do better each and every day. We need to help each other, coach each other and support Our software and hardware has been improved since the start of the year but our upgrades aren’t as far along as expected. Major investments have and will continue to be made in this area and I would hope to see significant improvement in the coming months. It is easy to become impatient with regards to these upgrades but we have to be mindful that the improvements have to be done in a correct manner in order not to experience setbacks as opposed to progress. Legislatively we are continuing to be proactive and are working closely with our trade associations and our elective officials to monitor activities affecting our business. This is obviously on-going but will be very important in 2013. 2012 has been a very challenging but successful year. A lot has been accomplished but as stated above, more has to be done. I hope that the year has been good to each of you and your families and I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Be safe. FROM THE DESK OF Don Haynes, President, LDF Food Group, Inc. W ell, the 2012 presidential election is over and we now know what changes to expect during the next four years. Health costs will go up for employers like us, which will pressure our profits, most likely forcing restaurants to raise prices to make up the difference. Taxes for all individuals will also go up, shrinking disposable income and making the fight for customers all the more intense. In other words, more of the same tough economic times ahead for everyone, for at least the next four years. Wendy’s held their annual update meeting in Philadelphia in early October. Many new programs on the horizon, most Don Haynes Inducted Into The Wendy’s Hall of Fame with a fairly expensive price tag. The brand will continue to test and prove returns on image activation. I hope they are successful! One change we will be participating with Wendy’s is the change to Questar, “The Voice of the Customer”. This will be a big part of our plan for 2013. This service is best described as market research on a daily basis on each and every store. We will be able to review each store’s attributes, individually, to see if we are positioned properly to grow our base business. I am excited about what this tool can do for our operations. Wendy’s has also made the decision to make self-serve drinks available in all of our dining rooms. I like this decision as well, as it improves our service times, let’s us have a better focus on accuracy, but most importantly allows us to spend the time we used to use to pour drinks instead interacting with customers. Courtesy and interaction with customers will be the largest platform for the “Voice of the Customer” program. The SOE evaluation will be phased out next year and replaced by a Customer Experience Index that will be composed Wendy’s Quality Supply Chain Cooperative (QSCC) in 2013 and was honored as the first recipient of the QSCC Hall of Fame award in 2012. He has been President and Chief Operating Officer for LDF Food Group for over 30 years and has helped grow that franchise from 11 to 42 stores while receiving numerous Wendy’s Awards for excellence in overall operations and At The Wendy’s Company National business initiatives. Convention in Philadelphia, PA on October 1st and 2nd, Don Haynes, President and Wendy’s was founded in Columbus, Chief Operating Officer, LDF Food Group, Ohio by Dave Thomas in 1969. Today was inducted into the Wendy’s Hall of Fame. Wendy’s includes more than 6,500 Mr. Haynes is the 63rd person to receive this franchise and company restaurants in the U.S. and 27 other countries and prestigious individual honor. U.S. territories worldwide. Larry Wendy’s Hall of Fame is a unique and select Fleming is Chairman of LDF Food group of outstanding individuals that have Group with 42 stores in Kansas, supported the Wendy’s brand for a minimum Oklahoma and Texas. Mr. Fleming of 10 years with outstanding marketing, resides in Wichita, KS and is also a human resource and operational initiatives. Wendy’s Hall of Fame member. Mr. Haynes will serve as Chairman of the 2 WHAT’S NEXT? of 1) Operations Evaluations, 2) Customer Experience, 3) Personnel Evaluations, and 4) Facilities Evaluations. These 4 components will be weighted to give each store their CEI (Customer Experience Index). We will start training on these changes in December 2012. Training will conclude around March 2013 and we will then be live on the new systems. Wendy’s has also enhanced their training tools for 2013. WeLearn courses have been condensed and shortened so we have a better chance to get more employees cross trained. Offsite courses for management have also been upgraded and we expect all our personnel to have access to these next year. Hopefully we will organize all the new initiatives properly in our plan for 2013. The goal of all the changes is still increased sales and profits. Remember Dave Thomas said “Profit is not a dirty word”. I thank all of you for your efforts during this year. Times have been challenging in Wichita but we have made some significant gains in Amarillo, Tulsa and Manhattan/Junction City. I wish all of you and all your families a wonderful holiday season! FROM THE DESK OF seems the attendance gets better each year and the services provided are all very much appreciated. Terry Parr , President, LDF Sales & Distributing T he Holidays are here and we are all working on our 2013 plan. Jim Cook told me once that the older you get the faster time goes by and I am beginning to believe him. He’s a wise old man (rest of comment edited by Cook)! Like to start off by thanking everyone involved in planning and hosting this year’s Bratfest. The food was delicious as always, the beer cold and refreshing and it was great getting together and visiting with everyone. Thanks volunteers for making this a success again this year! I would also like to thank Bill Goodlatte and Mary Troy for the job they do in putting together the Health Fairs in both Tulsa and Wichita. It LDF Receives National Honors For Marketing Excellence At the Wendy’s International National Convention in Philadelphia, PA on October 1st and 2nd LDF Food Group was honored as the national recipient of the coveted Diamond Award for Marketer of the Year. This award is presented to recognize outstanding marketing support of Wendy’s International national programs, local initiatives that drive sales and traffic and community support. Accepting the award was Jim Cook, Senior Another special event that requires a number of volunteers and this year sold a record number of kegs is the Oktoberfest in Tulsa. Dan Pasque and his team spend days preparing for the event and then endless hours working it. This event requires a team effort from the Warehouse, Administrative, Delivery, Sales and Special Event Teams all working together to make it a success. Great job everyone! As you all know we are in the midst of 2013 planning. Thank you for completing the attitude survey and providing your comments on areas we should focus on as we build our plan going forward. There have been comments that no one ever follows up on the opportunities that are brought out in the survey. I will tell you that is definitely not the case. We read through each group and ensure that areas that will provide a better working environment or increased sales and profits are all discussed and weighed as we build the plan. Our competitors will be introducing as many new brands as we are and all of us will be going after new shelf and display space. We know of at least 30 new brands and packages coming out of St. Louis. MillerCoors, Red Bull, Boulevard, Mike’s and our other suppliers are all coming with new brands and packages. One of our challenges next year will be to successfully introduce and sustain these new products. We will be developing a new process that will provide better communication to the sales team and our customers as we build strategies for new brand and package introductions. The net sales objective will be our most challenging and yet our most important. As in years past we will work to provide growth strategies across our entire portfolio the will ensure we all enjoy success in years to come. As always we will accept the challenge of the new year and work to achieve excellence in the marketplace, in our warehouses and within our sales, warehouse, delivery and accounting teams. I will leave you now and wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season. Thank you all for all you do each and every day. Good Selling! Pictured is Jim Cook showing off the Diamond Award that recognizes 3rd Trimester 2012 3 MATT ROMNEY VISITS LDF Submitted by Bill Goodlatte, Senior Vice President, Human Resources Matt Romney, Mitt Romney’s son, a crucial partner in the Romney Campaign for the Presidency of the United States, visited The LDF Companies in Wichita on Tuesday September 25th , accompanied by United States Congressman Mike Pompeo from the Kansas Fourth District, which takes in the greater Wichita area. After meeting with Larry and David Fleming and touring our warehouse, Matt and Mike moved on to the Fox and Hound to address a group of 100 young Republicans who were there to hear about the Presidential election and to sample some of our products. Helping political candidates who are supportive of our businesses is an important philosophy of The LDF Companies. WENDY’S TEAMS WITH JOHN 3:16 TO FEED THE HUNGRY Wendy’s in Catoosa and Broken Arrow, OK teamed with John 3:16 Mission to “Share The Warmth” to help feed hundreds in Tulsa and surrounding communities during Thanksgiving. The Catoosa store located at 2021 S. Cherokee and the two Broken Arrow stores at Kenosha and 193rd and 111th and Elm collected canned goods from November 5th - November 18th in the Dining Room and the Pick Up Window. Since it’s founding in 1952 the Mission has served in excess of 4 million meals and provided over 1 million individual shelters to the homeless. The promotion was very successful as we were able to donate over 1,000 canned food items to John 3:16 Mission that enabled those less fortunate to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with their families! CATOOSA WENDY’S SUPPORTS THE SUSAN G. KOMEN FOUNDATION Wendy’s in Catoosa, OK sold raffle tickets during the months of August and September in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. At the end of September a lucky customer won two tickets to see Jeff Foxworthy at The Joint located at the Hard Rock Casino, a free night stay at the LaQuinta, plus dinner for two at the Red Rock Canyon! KTUL Channel 8 and the Catoosa Chamber were very instrumental in spreading the word with live on-air promotions at the store and weekly Chamber notifications! All the money raised from the sales of the raffle tickets was donated to the Foundation. In addition, the restaurant held car washes and other events to support the cause and find a cure for cancer! Raffle tickets were only $1.00 each and Larry Nichols, General Manager, set the goal at $5,000 and actually topped that lofty goal. On October 15th, Wendy’s in Catoosa presented a check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the amount of $5,075 to Christy Southard, Executive Director, Susan G. Norma Cape with Miss Wendy 3rd Trimester 2012 5 Wendy’s Raises $7,100 For Mannford Fire Victims In early August a devastating wildfire consumed much of the southwest Tulsa area, including the town of Mannford, which is located just west of downtown Tulsa! Hundreds of people lost everything – homes, clothing, food and all their personal belongings! They had nothing but the love and concern from people and businesses like Wendy’s that reach out to our communities in time of need! help those hurting in Mannford! With only one day notice we were able to mobilize our system and every employee was on board. With the help of our IT department we enabled a “day of caring” register key to account for the donations. The LDF Sign Shop turned around merchandising and most importantly, our register operators politely asked each customer to help! And did they HELP! On August 10th Jim Cook presented a check to the Mannford Fire Relief Fund in the amount of $7,100! KXOJ, which is a very giving radio station, commented that they have never teamed with a business that made such a difference! They do plan to partner with Wendy’s for many “community” projects in 2013! The Dave Thomas legacy is to “Give Back” Wendy’s teamed with KXOJ radio for a “Day and I am quite sure that Dave was with of Caring”! KXOJ promoted “go to Wendy’s” me when I presented that check – I felt his and donate any amount to the “cause” and presence! Halloween In The Park Submitted by Jennifer Fisher, Area Director, Wichita over 2,000 kids and their families! We distributed more than 500 “Where’s Waldo” costumes to area businesses, schools and Wendy’s employees so the City of Tulsa residents knew where Waldo would be – AT WENDY’S! The Wendy’s Kids’ Meal campaign in September and October featured “Where’s Waldo” toys and the exposure in the market contributed to one of our best Kids’ Meal campaigns in 2012! The following comment was sent in by Russell Vaclaw regarding his recent visit to our restaurant at 31st & Hiway 169 this summer. A couple of “Waldoettes!” “We ate there on our way to a football game for our kids. It was my wife and our 3 kids (ages 5,9,12). We ordered, ate, and left. As we were pulling back onto the highway, my wife just blurted out exactly what I was thinking: ’those were the nicest people’ at Wendy’s. It is funny because I was driving away thinking the exact same thing. It is sad when that is unusual but that is what we come to expect, I suppose. But I was so impressed and thought it necessary to pass it on. We were very appreciative of how nice the entire staff was. There was a young man in particular and I do not know his name. He was a young African-American kid about 16-18 years Broken Arrow High School students Enjoy a Baconator! old. He was in the middle of cleaning off the tables when he saw I wanted a refill. He was extremely kind and asked about us in a way that was very charming and appreciative. I will tell you that I am a judge in the state of Oklahoma. I see plenty of young kids who are going nowhere. It is such a relief to see young kids willing to work hard and not just working but appearing to enjoy it. Gives me hope. My wife mentioned it and I thought the same thing. We eat at Wendy’s fairly infrequently because we try not to eat out much. But I’ll do it again because of that kid and others working with him that evening.” 3rd Trimester 2012 7 Heisman Trophy Tours Wendy’s Markets! Please join me in Congratulating Daniel for a Job Well Done. Daniel Jennessee “Voice of the Customer” Give them what THEY Want Submitted by Chris Haynes, Area Director – Amarillo, TX As we wrap up 2012 and roll into 2013 it is important that we take a moment to identify what it is that we are doing well and what we need to do better. In the past we have focused on measures that give us grades based upon what we think the customer “should” want. While this has helped us improve in some areas, our customers have been voting with their feet! We are not growing transactions and that is not a healthy business model. What can we do differently? We can stop telling our customers what they “should” like and START asking our customers what they DO like! From there it’s a pretty easy solution, GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT. We have just started using a new customer feedback system powered by Questar. This system asks our customers to tell us what they like and don’t like about our service, food and facilities. It presents this feedback in reports that we can view daily in order to improve our operation. It is called “Voice of the Customer” (VOC). After all, it is the customer that decides what they like and it is the customer that decides where to spend their hard earned dollars. The voice of the customer is so crucially important that it is being implemented as a major measure in our 2013 plan objectives. Are we friendly? Ask the customer. Are our fries good? Ask the customer. Are we accurate? Ask the customer. I think you get the drift here. BUT it is important to take one more very important step. LISTEN to the customer, accept what they are telling us and take action to give them what they want. I am proud to a member of the LDF team because I know that my teammates are talented, caring individuals. I am confident that as we become aware of our customer’s wants, we will do whatever it takes to give it to them. In return they will visit out stores and pay a fair price for our products. Everyone wins when we grow our business. Have a safe and happy holiday season and let’s make 2013 end in the green! 3rd Trimester 2012 11 Wendy’s Wonderful Kids A Signature Program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption The Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program addresses the urgency of finding permanent homes for children who, for a variety of reasons, cannot grow up in their birth families. Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s, was very passionate about adoption and strongly believed that “every child deserves a loving home”. Dave was adopted at an early age and his passion lives today through the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and the hundreds of Wendy’s franchises in each state! Wendy’s Wonderful Kids is a signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation For Adoption and is making a difference for thousands of children – one child at a time! Submitted by Pastor Joe Wright How thankful are you that you have been born in the USA? Have you ever even thought about it? I have to admit for quite some time in my life, it was not at the top of my “Things For Which I am Most Thankful” list. We just take that for granted, don’t we? I know I did until I traveled abroad a few times. After just a few of those trips I came back telling everyone, “there’s no place on earth as good as the United States of America!” In the last 18 months I have been to Honduras twice and those two trips have greatly impacted my life! Honduras, a country slightly larger than Tennessee, has a population of 7.5 million people. It is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere and has massive unemployment. An average wage for many is $1.00 to $2.00 per day. Widespread malnutrition complicates the population’s fragile health as well as many diseases and social illnesses! “Open Door Ministries” is making a difference in the lives of orphaned children by placing them in a home with a loving family environment. The work I’ve gotten involved with in this country was started by Barry and Penny Compton, a very successful business couple that wanted to “give back”! They started a girls’ home and orphanage in the town of Tocoa, Colon. While I was there I was able to treat them to lunch at Wendy’s and it was a BIG DEAL for them to enjoy a Wendy’s Cheeseburger and a Frosty! Most recently I met a young five year old boy named Vladimer (pictured) who was rescued from the street with his three siblings. They were found living on the street with nothing to eat and severely malnourished. I was very moved when I held him in my arms and watched him cry from the discomfort! Please say a prayer for this little boy and others living in this type of poverty and mistreatment! Well, what can I say except this? When you gather with family and friends during the Holiday Season, COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS! America is not without her problems but WE ARE TRULY BLESSED!
