The Regional Municipality of York reminds residents to
conserve water this summer
PUBLIC SERVICE
ANNOUNCEMENT
One inch
of water a week is all your lawn needs to keep it looking green
With the warm weather upon us,
The Regional Municipality of
York reminds residents to follow their municipality’s outdoor
water use bylaws and to conserve
water.
“Water conservation is an ongoing initiative to ensure York Region remains a community with
a healthy, self-sufficient environment,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “The
Region is always looking at ways
to protect and conserve water and
how residents can help – now and
into the future.”
One easy way to conserve water is
to avoid over-watering. A healthy
lawn doesn’t need to be watered
every day – one inch of water a
week is all it takes to keep your
lawn looking vibrant and fresh.
If you need to water, follow your
municipal bylaw. The time of
day allowed for watering differs
among the municipalities, but all
all allow even-numbered houses
to water on even-numbered days
and odd-numbered houses to water on odd-numbered days.
You can still keep your lawn and
garden looking great by following these tips:
• Water grass in the early morning
when the sun is lowest to avoid
evaporation
• Use a rain gauge to measure
rainfall and monitor watering
• Choose a sprinkler that shoots
low to the ground to avoid wind
drift
• Consider using a rain barrel as a
water source for your garden instead of tap water
“Great summer weather means a
higher demand on municipal water supplies which could affect
emergency services such as fire
fighting,” said Town of Richmond
Hill Regional Councillor Vito
Spatafora, Chair of the Region’s
Environmental Services Commit-
tee. “We want residents to enjoy
the sunshine, but to remember
that water conservation is also an
important part of summer.”
Water conservation initiatives
are run year-round through York
Region’s Water for Tomorrow
program. More tips about how to
save water both inside and outside
the home, as well as information
about local watering bylaws, can
be found on the Water for Tomorrow website at www.waterfortomorrow.ca
York Region residents wishing
to learn more about their local
bylaws are encouraged to visit
their municipality’s website and
