Mission Statement Through a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, accountability, and community involvement, Oakton High School will provide rigorous, relevant, and well-rounded education for all students. SUBMIT If you have an article that you would like to have included in Access Oakton, please forward it to Marcia Pickett at: [email protected]. The due dates for articles for future publications are April 1 and May 30. PTSA MEETINGS All PTSA meetings are held in the OHS Library beginning at 7:00 pm. The next meeting are March 5, April 2, May 7, and June 4. Newsletter designed by Carly Stonehouse, Oakton Outlook Editor-in-Chief and Erin Preaskorn, Oakton Outlook Copy Editor Letter from the President I t has been a tough post-holiday slog with all of the snow days and delays that have made getting through the end of this semester less than seamless. We hope to have the toughest weather behind us and we look forward to getting into a good learning groove. A few important things to note: Because of budget cuts, OHS will likely lose some of its talented staff next year. Therefore, it is very, very important that your rising freshman, sophomores and juniors make class choices that they are comfortable with keeping for the 2014-15 academic year. Classes will be fuller and schedules will be tight, so changes will be difficult once they are set. Have your children really consider what interests them and what they will have time to manage. Stretching is important. Stretching too far is no fun for anyone! If the lack of funding for the FCPS budget bothers you, ACT!! Each member of the Board of Supervisors has said that he or she seldom hears from the parent community on the topic of funding the school budget. Take a few minutes to contact your representative and/or the entire Board. Let them know that you are aware that the school system has increased efficiency to the point where any other changes and cuts are going to affect the quality of our children’s educations. FCPS has been operating without the additional resources necessary as the number of students has been increasing significantly each year. Fairfax County has a long history of being a premier public school system. That fact helps our property value and ultimately our quality of life in this region. Let your governing body know that we need to support our schools. Advisory groups involved in Capstone projects are getting rolling. Thank you to those teachers and students who are putting in the time and passion to make a difference. We are most fortunate to have received a grant to help fund some of these projects. We wish to enthusiastically thank the Prasad family for their generous donation which will be leveraged to help our students help their community. Thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of Liane Carlstrom and her dedicated All Night Grad Party Committee, planning for the All Night Grad celebration for seniors is well underway. The vast majority of seniors celebrate their graduation from high school at this drug-free, alcohol-free awesome event where they are safe and have a memorable night reveling in their accomplishments with the friends they have made over the years. There are music, games, a full casino, food, massage therapists, more food, an illusionist, raffles, etc and etc! The party is graduation night, Thursday, June 19 from 10:30 pm until 5:00 am on June 20. Tickets are just $75, but if you order them BEFORE APRIL 1, 2014 they are ONLY $55. Scholarships are available for those who need. Please check with your child’s counselor. Volunteers are needed. Volunteering is fun! To register your child, get additional information and volunteer online go to: http:// oaktonhsptsa.org/wordpress/ang/. Support and encourage your children during this time of year. Please contact the school if you need any assistance. The PTSA just hosted psychologist Meg Sullivan for a casual discussion evening. Meg answered parents’ questions and shared parenting advice. It was a valuable evening for all, so we will be planning to host Ms. Sullivan again in April. Please pay attention to the Keep in Touches for details regarding her next visit. Keep in mind that Dr. Banbury comes to the monthly PTSA meetings 30 minutes before the formal meetings begin to share valuable insight and to answer any questions. Our next meeting is Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 7 pm, informal portion begins at 6:30. Best regards, Kirsten Kunkler Rucker President-OHS PTSA OAKTON OAKTON AC C E S S A D M I N I S T R AT I O N Letter from the Principal: February 19, 2014 Dear Oakton Community, W hat a winter! With so many snow days and delays, it will be spring before we know it. April 7 and June 23 will now be school days to compensate for lost instructional time. However, if another snow or ice storm strikes and requires two more snow days, we could be eligible for a state waiver for the make-up dates. Stay informed through our Keep-In-Touch messages, Twitter feed, and Facebook page for future updates. Believe it or not, course registration for the 2014-2015 school year is upon us. With semester report cards in hand, now is a perfect time to discuss goals and course options for next year with your child. Taking college and career aspirations into account along with your child’s current performance, together you can make strategic choices for course enrollment. If you have any questions about the course registration process, touch base with your child’s school counselor who can offer guidance as you plan for the future. Winter has been a particularly accomplished season for a variety of Oakton teams. For example, Michael Williamson earned the distinction of 1st place Regional Champion in Forensics for Humorous Interpretation. He will be competing in the State Tournament in March. At a recent Model United Nations conference at Columbia University, Oakton students stole the show, including Laura Murphy and Hayley Johnson who were honored as Best Delegates. OHS Theatre Department won 2nd place at the district tournament for Fourteen Lines, a one act play. In addition, Oakton Girls’ Track is the Conference Champion this year, and Oakton Girls’ Swim and Dive is the Regional Champion. Go Oakton! Such a variety of talent we have here! In less than a month, we will host Oakton High School’s third annual Exhibition of Learning! The Exhibition of Learning is an open house for the community on March 18 and 19 from 6:308:00 p.m. during which students demonstrate their diverse 21st century skills by presenting meaningful projects along with their reflections on learning. As the date approaches, students will be assigned to one night or the other. Freshmen and sophomores are required to present; juniors and seniors are welcome, as well. Please plan to celebrate the joy of learning with us on one or both of the nights! Despite the hard work of our students in the last two years, we have struggled to gather a large community audience. Would you please mark your calendars to stay with us for an evening as our students demonstrate and hone real-world skills such communication, creativity, and critical thinking? Invite your family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to be inspired by the promise of skilled, innovative, and articulate Oakton youth. See you there! Thank you for taking time to be involved at Oakton High School. I will see you at the Exhibition of Learning in a few weeks! Sincerely, John Banbury Oakton High School Principal [email protected] Once I Was by Youngbin Lee Youngbin Lee, a Korean ESOL student, wrote a book of poetry called “Once I Was…” It is a collection of over 40 poems printed in Korean and English sorted into specific categories such as Family, School, Life as a Teenager, Happiness, and Nature. The ESOL Department would like to congratulate Youngbin on this wonderful accomplishment! | PAGE 2 U P D AT E S Cougar Calendar DATE March 5 March 12 March 18 March 19 April 2 EVENT PTSA Meeting 7 pm Sophomore Parent Night 7 pm Exhibition of Learning 6:30-8:30 pm Exhibition of Learning 6:30-8:30 pm PTSA Meeting 7 pm News from Theatre Arts W www.oaktondrama.org ell it has been an interesting start to 2014! As much fun as snow can be, it sure wreaks havoc on a rehearsal schedule. I’m so proud of the kids for using every waking minute of their snow days to learn lines and practice blocking. (HA!!!) Regardless, our Theatre 3&4 students performed Fourteen Lines at the district VHSL competition on January 30th and came in 2nd place behind Chantilly. This took us to the Regional competition held at Lake Braddock High School on February 8th. Although we will not move on to States, some honorable recognition was given to the following cast members: Raphael Ortiz, Steffen Schilstra and Eric South. Lauren Frautschi, Laura MacDonald and Christine Cox were also recognized for their work. And Savannah Hemmig was recognized for her student direction. I couldn’t be more proud of this cast and crew overcoming our snow day set-backs and performing what I thought was a “perfect show.” On February 10th we held our annual Booster sponsored Cougar Dinner Theatre and chili cook off. Theatre 2 performed Shakespeare’s Hunger Games followed by Theatre 3 & 4’s Fourteen Lines, DEATH and AP Theatre. Our improvisation team, The Improvables, also performed to great laughs! All the proceeds go towards our KT SMITH SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Thanks to the Boosters for putting together such a fun night! Next up our Drama 2 kids will take their Hunger Games production to the Folger Shakespeare Student Festival on March 6th. At the end of the month, from March 27-30th, we will be joining the Choral Department on a field trip to Pittsburgh, PA for a tour of the city, workshops at Carnegie Mellon and Point Park as well as taking in 3 different theatre productions. There are still spots available, so please contact me if your student is interested in coming along! The cast of Pirates of Penzance is already busy learning the songs for our spring show and will start blocking and choreography next month. Mark your calendars to set sail May 15, 16, &17th. See you in the audience. A Jeanine Musgraove Memorial s many of you are aware, the Oakton community suffered a tremendous loss this past summer with the unexpected passing of one of our science teachers, Jeanine Musgrove. Jeanine had a true passion for the environment and often talked about her desire for a space for classes to congregate outside. Thus, we felt that there could be no better tribute to Jeanine than building an outdoor classroom on the grounds of Oakton High School. A project has begun to make the Jeanine Musgrove Memorial Outdoor Classroom a reality.
