Each time a parent calls to leave a message for a student, office staff must answer the telephone, write up the message, and leave the office to take the message to a classroom. This procedure is very disruptive to the classroom learning process. Parents can assist by confining their requests to EMERGENCY situations only. Proper planning and communication would be greatly appreciated. PERMISSION TO LEAVE SCHOOL Parents! Remember that students may not leave school without a pass from their grade level office. If your student has an appointment, he or she must check out and check back in to their grade level office. If your student is ill, he or she MUST go to the nurses’ office. Proper parent notification and check out will happen at that time. Students who leave school without a pass will be marked unexcused. send a note with their child the day before the absence, if possible. Students then go to their grade level office to pick up a blue pass excusing them from class early. Students coming in late should have been called in or have a note from a parent, doctor, or dentist. REQUESTS for HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS may be done by accessing the listing of all staff on the East website and emailing your student’s teachers directly. REGISTRATION FEES EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 PAGE 8 EARLY RELEASE NOW ON MONDAYS! Teacher professional collaboration time will be on Mondays when it returns for the 2011-12 school year at all MMSD middle and high schools. What it means is the early release of middle and high students on most Mondays. Professional collaboration time (PCT) will be moving to Mondays in order to coordinate with MMSD elementary schools which have early release on every Monday. In middle and high schools, PCT/early release will occur a total of 27 times throughout the school year but not on every Monday. La Follette HS, due to their four block schedule, will have 24 early release Mondays. The early release times will be 60 or more minutes earlier than normal dismissal times. PCT was first implemented in September of last year, but it was dropped in March for the remainder of the year when additional instructional minutes were needed to make up time for the four February days that Madison Schools were closed. Professional collaboration time is based on the long-standing concept that high quality school districts provide teachers with time for collaboration in order to improve instruction and overall student achievement. Prior to its implementation, middle and high school teachers had minimal time to collaborate. Bus schedules will be adjusted to accommodate the early release times. After-school opportunities for middle school students during the collaboration times will be provided through MSCR. PCT (early release) dates for the 2011-2012 school year are as follows: September 12, 19, 26 REGISTRATION October 3, 10, 17, 31 November 14, 28 December 5, 12, 19 January 9, 30 February 6, 13, 27 March 5, 12, 19, 26 April 16, 23, 30 May 7, 14, 21 EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 PAGE 9 P A R E N T P O R TA L Do you use the Portal? Have you established access to this information? If not, here’s why you should and how you can get access. What is Infinite Campus? Today, all K-12 school districts use some sort of database system for managing student information and maintaining their records. Infinite Campus is a district-wide student information system designed to manage attendance, grades, schedules, test scores, and other information about the students in the MMSD. In 2007-08, Infinite Campus replaced another system the MMSD had used since the late 1980's. What is the Infinite Campus Parent Portal? The Parent Portal is a confidential and secure Web site where parents and guardians can get current information about their child's school attendance and grades. What information is included in the Portal? What do I use it for? When you, as a parent or guardian, log-in, you have access to information about all of the students for which you are associated. Class schedules, assignments and grades can be viewed. E-mail hyperlinks facilitate communication with classroom teachers. In addition, schools post important information on the home page, such as events, notices, etc. Attendance information is also available. The Parent Portal allows report cards to be viewed online and printed. Through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, MMSD provides an online communication tool which can help you as a parent or guardian stay current with your student's progress. From an Internet connection at home, the workplace or any public library, you can view upto-date information about your student's attendance and grades. How do I first use the Infinite Campus Parent Portal? You must set up a user account in order to use the Portal. Your child's school provides you with a Parent Portal activation code. By using this code and following the instructions in the Parent Portal User Setup Guide, you can setup your own user account for the Parent Portal. The Infinite Campus Parent Portal is located at: http://infosvcweb.madison.k12 .wi.us/ic/entry_public. We recommend you "bookmark" this location after you get your account enabled. After you go through the process of creating your user name and password, write them down and keep them in a place where you can refer to them at a later date. The user name and password will allow you to see student information, but only for those children for whom you are a parent or guardian. If you have questions, contact Jessica Penning at 204-1613 or [email protected] REGISTRATION The Parent Portal is a confidential and secure website where you can get current information about your child's school attendance and grades. EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 PAGE 10 East High United (EHU) is the parent group at East. EHU meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month— usually four meetings first semester, and four meetings second semester—at 7:00 p.m. in the East LMC. Each meeting begins with an informative update from principal Mary Kelley, and features a specific topic, as well as an opportunity for discussion on other topics and issues. Meeting dates for the 2011-2012 school year: September 8 October 13 November 10 December 8 February 9 March 8 April 12 May 10 Notes from meetings are posted on the EHU website: https://sites.google.com/ site/easthighunited/ Another way to connect with other parents and guardians at East is to join an EHU email list. This unmoderated list is set up so that any list participant can post a message, and all list participants receive every post and all subsequent replies. Everything posted to the announcements list is also posted to the discussion list. In the summer of 2009 I started my Master’s Degree at Lakeland College in Professional School Counseling. While pursuing that, I was a Special Educational Assistant at Sennett Middle School. I finally graduated in May 2011 and accepted my first school counseling job at East High School! I am so excited to become a School Counselor and make a difference in your school. Personally, I am a very energetic, caring and a hardworking individual. I love being social and enjoying the summer weather. Recently this July I was married. This summer has been filled with wonderful personal and professional changes in my life. I am so excited to start my career at East High School and meet all the wonderful students, staff members and parents. If you ever have any question for me please do not hesitate. My door is always open. EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 PAGE 17 (New Staff, continued) Kyle Mayne, SPECIAL EDUCATION My name is Kyle Mayne and I am a brand new teacher here at Madison East High School in the special education department. I have made the journey down the road from Monona Grove High School where I taught “At-Risk” students last year. I am excited for my transition from being a “Silver Eagle” to a “Purgolder” this year! I went to high school in a small town called Lancaster, Wisconsin where I grew up and played a variety of sports and participated in school plays. I then went on to college at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where I specified in Science and eventually switched gears and went into teaching. While I was in college I got a great opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica and absolutely loved the experience and encourage anyone who gets the chance to study abroad to do so. I love the Brewers, Packers and the Badgers and LOVE watching them and going to as many games as possible. I am really looking forward to this school year at East and from the experience that I had this year teaching Summer School Science, I look forward to the fun personalities of all the Madison East students and the teamwork that the East teachers bring to the classroom! Matt Miota, SPECIAL EDUCATION My name is Matt Miota and I am originally from West Allis, WI. I attended Lawrence University, and received my Master's Degree from the University of St. Thomas. I have been teaching for 14 years and before moving to Madison, I lived in St. Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles. I have taught in Madison at West High School, Portland, OR, and Minneapolis, MN. I have a wife, Katy and a 14-month old son, Matteo who takes up most of my free time in a wonderful way. I am also the Head Boys Basketball coach here at East, entering my second season. I am looking forward to becoming more engaged in the East community as a teacher, and love the diverse student body at East High School. Jaclyn Moreno, SPEECH AND LANGUAGE Dennis Mossholder, TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING EDUCATION Hello, my name is Mr. Dennis Mossholder and I am looking forward to teaching at Madison East High School. I am coming to education after enjoying 13 years in industry at a large metal manufacturing company and at a store fixture and cabinetry company. I student taught in Madison in 2008 and was a substitute teacher in Madison until spring of 2010. After 1-1/2 years of teaching at Middleton High School I am happy to be teaching Technology and Engineering Education at Madison East High school. I will be teaching all levels of woods, home maintenance, and a small engine class. EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 PAGE 18 (New Staff, continued) Mike Lovenberg, INTERIM 9TH GRADE PRINCIPAL I will be the Interim 9th Grade Principal. I started at East in 2001 when I taught Special Education and Social Studies and left to work at Memorial HS in 2005. I am very excited to be back at East!!! My wife and I have 2 beautiful children who are in Elementary School. When I am not at work, I enjoy spending my "downtime" with my family, watching movies and rooting for my favorite football team, the Chicago Bears!!!!! KatIe Rozas, WORLD LANGUAGE I grew up in Brookfield, Wisconsin in a very unique household; one with two strong, yet completely different cultures and traditions. My father was born and raised in Cusco, Peru and carried his strong beliefs and customs with him to America. My mother's family had settled in Milwaukee for many generations, and was living the American dream. It was these first-hand life experiences that make me the p e r s o n I a m t o d a y ! I graduated from UW-Madison with a Bachelors degree in Journalism with a concentration in Advertising and Public Relations in 2004. I loved every moment of my undergraduate career, frequenting the Memorial Union Terrace and cheering for Bucky at Badger football games. After graduating, I worked in various aspects of marketing and public relations, only to discover that I felt no real connection to my work. Within a short time, I grew disappointed with my career choice and sought after my real passion. I wanted to work with youth and wanted to make more of an impact by directly working with children and adolescents. It was at that moment, I decided to become a teacher by combining two of my life passions: children and the Spanish language and cultures. I recently gained licensure to teach English as a Second Language from Edgewood College and Spanish from UW-Madison. I'm currently finishing my Masters at Edgewood College. For the past 2 years, I have been working in the Waunakee Community School district with English Language Learners. I am very excited to become a part of the East High School community and World language department! I currently live in Madison with my husband, cat and dog. I enjoy spending free time reading, traveling to Spanish-speaking countries and being outside. This spring I finished my 4th half marathon and hope to some day run a full marathon. EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 PAGE 19 (New Staff, continued) Mark Saltzman, BAND I have been teaching for 21 years, the last 17 here in Madison at Whitehorse Middle School. After having gone to school here at UW and then teaching in a few small towns, I moved back to Madison for grad school. My wife Cheryl and I have been living here on the East side now for 9 years. We have an 80 lb. y e l l o w L a b r a d o r n a m e d C h e e s e . I have been the director of the Madison All-City Honor Band for many years as well as working closely with the LaFollette High School Band Program. I look forward to being a part of the strong East Band tradition and having the opportunity to make music with the band students here at East High School. Alex Tejeda, SPECIAL EDUCATION My name is Alex Tejeda and I have fourteen years of teaching experience. I am a graduate of Knox College in Galesburg, lllinois. I also have a M.S. in special education from Chicago State University. The past three years I have taught at Moline H.S. in Moline, Illinois and now am really excited about teaching special education at Madison East High School. My wife, six year old son and I are looking forward to relocating to central Wisconsin. In my spare time, I enjoy running, reading, and coaching my son's youth baseball team. I am eager to meet and work with the students, parents, and staff of Madison East High School. Katie Twitchell, SCIENCE My name is Katie Twitchell and I have been around East High School now for two years during which I completed a semester of my student teaching and where I was the girl’s assistant swim team coach for the last two fall seasons. I am pleased to write that this year I have been hired onto the East staff as a science teacher and as the head girl’s swim coach. Needless to say, I am very excited to become a full-time Purgolder! A little about myself: I grew up in Brookfield, Wisconsin and attended Brookfield Central High School. I then moved to Madison where I completed my undergraduate degree in Biology and Environmental Studies. I have always had a love for science. After completing this degree, I re-enrolled in the Secondary Education program in the School of Education at UW-Madison to receive my Secondary Education degree for Biology and Broad field teaching. I have recently graduated and am very excited to have my own classes in the fall! While at the UW, I swam on the varsity swim team for 4 years. After my swimming career ended, I took up running and biking and have since then completed two marathons and the Wisconsin Ironman. They were very incredible experiences that I was lucky to have. In my spare time I enjoy the outdoors, whether it be camping, hiking, or simply reading a good book or tossing a frisbee outside. If you see me around, please stop by and introduce yourself, as I am very excited to become a part of the East community. East Side Pride! Several sports are more costly to run and involve a smaller number of students and they are surcharged at the following rate: Hockey Wrestling Girls’ Gymnastics Boys’ Golf Girls’ Golf $800 $100 $100 $118 $118 A T H In addition, the policy states that families will pay no more than a maximum total of $500.00 per year in participation fees. The surcharge amounts are excluded from that maximum. L Athletes who meet certain criteria may apply for athletic fee waivers at the school office. The athletic participation fees will be collected after coaches have made their final team selections for the season. The school district will continue to look for additional ways to bring these costs down. There will also be ongoing evaluation to determine the impact that the fees have on participation in athletics. Athletic Participation Refund Policy: Refunds will be issued before the first date of competition for that specific sport. Because the district collects participation fees after teams have been selected, athletes that are unable to practice or participate due to prior injuries, will not pay the participation fee until they are released by their physician for this activity. It is a new school year and the English teachers are prepared to teach your students with fresh new tactics in reading and writing skills. We are also a department steeped in tradition and excellence! We do have an up and coming website that can be found on the East homepage, called "East English Department" and hope that you check it out for various clubs, contests and links to teachers and potential assignments. Look forward throughout the year to a stronger connection to what we're doing with your students through this link. There will also be another ACT/SAT prep class offered after school/early evening for students this fall, as in the spring. We will tweak the times, so as to include students with extra-curriculars, and offer the class for a small fee. This proved invaluable for those who participated, and we want to continue this new tradition. Thank you in advance for your continued support of East High teachers and especially our English teachers as we embark upon a year with only 2 levels of 9th, 10th and 11th grade core classes (now called English 1, 2 and 3). The shift by the district will cause a change, but we will continue to make the classroom an effective, cohesive and learning environment for all learners in the reading and writing classroom. EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 PAGE 23 EAST KELLY GARDEN BY KIA CONRAD, ENGLISH April blessed us with some breezy, sunny mornings, and The Novel class took advantage of the weather to read on the patio. We couldn't help but notice the neglect of the patio garden--in fact, it proved a complete distraction. We would read a line, pull a thistle, sigh at the sight of so many weeds. The students wanted to get the weeds out of that garden. That quickly evolved into reclaiming the garden, because the class (mostly seniors) wanted to make a difference and improve the climate of the school. Well, that was the beginning of a project in which the students incorporated the love of reading and the beautification of East. They turned over every inch of dirt in that wasteland and pulled out every thistle. They designed a book garden with perennial flowers in purple and gold, flowering lilacs, crab trees and vibernum bushes. They planned garden sculptures (which Metals class has been creating) that would reflect important themes from novels read in and out of class. They chose passages from famous works to inspire other students, and Woods has created these plaques for the garden. They decided to dedicate the garden to long-time East teacher and English chair, George Kelly. They approached Jung's and Home Depot for assistance, and the stores generously discounted and donated bushes and perennials to us, and parents bought plants and dug up plants from their home gardens to be added to our patio collection. The kids spaded and pulled and raked and clawed and planted and soaked every plant, and each other, on hot days. You can never say a garden is finished; it is always a work in progress, continuously growing and changing. The second generation of weeds has popped up, and that battle goes on. We need to add a truckload of mulch to the garden to protect the plants and define a walkway. Coreopsis and Butterfly Bushes need to have spent flowers removed. But the patio garden has been planned to be continuously lovely, and will only become more beautiful with time. Although students have scattered for the summer, they will come together, with some gardening staff members, to do the work that needs to be done. And if you would like to join us, on some lovely summer afternoon or evening, to pull some weeds, plant some flowers, or spread some mulch in the patio garden or elsewhere on the East grounds, please let us know. We would love to have you work with us. And make sure to visit the George Kelly Garden and enjoy it! Pack a picnic lunch and go see what's there. Hang out before or after a game. The birds, the dragonflies and the bees have found it already. The Japanese lilacs smelled like heaven this week. Who knows what wonderful thing you will discover there? EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 PAGE 24 by Cynthia Chin Welcome back, students! We are looking forward to providing you with many successful experiences in mathematics, and we hope that you are excited about the new year as well! Get ready to… Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Mathematically proficient students start by explaining to themselves the meaning of a problem and looking for entry points to its solution. They analyze givens, constraints, relationships, and goals. They… plan a solution pathway rather than simply jumping into a solution attempt. ...They monitor and evaluate their progress and change course if necessary. Mathematically proficient students can explain correspondences between equations, verbal descriptions, tables, and graphs or draw diagrams of important features and relationships… [They] check their answers to problems using a different method, and they continually ask themselves, “Does this make sense?” -- from the “Standards for Mathematical Practice”, Common Core State Standards (CCSS) adopted by the state of Wisconsin in June 2010. http:// www.corestandards.org/ To encourage student and family discussion about what’s happening in class, we’ll print a different one of the standards in each newsletter this year. What does “a successful experience in mathematics” mean to you? STAFF UPDATES: ESL mathematics teacher Daniel Torres-Rangel has accepted a position in Redwood City, California. Mr. TorresRangel taught several courses in the department and also worked as a team-teacher supporting English Language Learners in the classroom. He was active in providing professional development to the entire department regarding student literacy and critical examination of teaching practice. Students also knew him as an assistant gymnastics coach, NHS advisor, and stage director (Inherit the Wind, Life of Galileo, Simpson Street). We wish him well and thank him for his dedication to giving all East students the best possible experiences in school and preparation for life. East math teachers will be bringing many new ideas and tools from summer professional development back to the classroom this fall. These include: algebra assignment innovations from the SERPMSAN research network, AVID strategies for helping students become independent pre-college learners, department-wide vertical teaming to bolster the routes toward Advanced Placement courses, materials for teaching financial literacy, and diagnostic use of new standardized test data from 2010. During the course of the year, they will be discussing the challenges and opportunities presented by Wisconsin’s recent adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. (continued on next page) EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 CALCULATORS: In order to learn and apply the mathematics covered in most classes at East, students will be required to use a graphing calculator. (Geometry courses are the only exception.) This is a versatile tool and a worthwhile investment. Students often find it to be helpful in science classes and are also expected to be familiar with this technology when taking standardized state exams, the SAT or ACT, and Advanced Placement examinations. A calculator from an older relative or friend can certainly be used again, but sharing is difficult because the calculator is used on a daily basis in class and at home. The specific models recommended are all made by Texas Instruments: TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84, and TI-84+ (“Silver editions” have higher computing speeds and more memory, but are not required.) Please do NOT consider any models other than the ones listed above, as they will not be supported in class. We understand this is an expensive purchase. East offers a calculator rental option to families in need of assistance. The rental fee is $15 for the entire school year. The East Math Club funds a few rental scholarships each year in cases where rental fees present a hardship. A copy of the rental agreement will be available at registration, in the event that you wish to take advantage of this program. Completing the form and making the rental payment (or obtaining an official waiver) will ensure that your student obtains a calculator during the first two weeks of the school year. About purchasing calculators: Watch for sales—you should not pay more than $90 for a TI83 or more than $120 for a TI84+. Some office supply retailers offer significant discounts at their online addresses. --Save the UPC code from the package—if you will not be using it for your own rebate, it may be useful to your teacher. Schools can sometimes trade them in for classroom equipment. --Make sure your name is permanently marked on your calculator and that you write down the serial number from the back, in case of loss or theft. PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT! DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CALCULATOR UNATTENDED, EVEN IN A CLASSROOM! --IF you are in a position to donate a new/used calculator, or replacement batteries, to the school rental program, your gift would be VERY much appreciated. Donations should be directed to the math department chair, Karen Paschke ( 2 0 4 - 1 5 2 9 o r [email protected]) The return of missing calcula- PAGE 25 tors from last year would also be very welcome, of course— please check backpacks and around the home again if you were unable to return a calculator on time in June. We look forward to working with students (and their calculators) in class. Please contact a member of the math faculty if you have additional questions. TUTORING & TA’s: One-to-one help in the classroom, during study hall, or after school, can really make a difference. Students and parents should consider taking advantage of tutoring resources immediately in the fall, before academic difficulties arise. Community members who can assist East students at any level of mathematics are welcome as volunteers. Current East students who can tutor during their free periods are also invited to help out, and can earn either Service E credit as a volunteer or elective credit towards graduation (for a onesemester daily commitment as a Mathematics Teaching Assistant). Contact Cynthia Chin 2 0 4 - 1 5 3 4 [email protected] about volunteer placements, and Steve Somerson 204-1533 [email protected] or your counselor about the TA program.. Watch for announcements about meetings. We are a very active group and will be busy almost from day one. New members are welcome at all grade levels. UW WOMEN’S MENTORSHIP in MATHEMATICS: Young women are invited to meet twice monthly with female faculty and graduate students in math and science. Participants discuss college life and career options, and work on research projects suited to their current mathematics backgrounds. The projects explore both traditional and non-traditional topics in greater depth than is often available in the high school curriculum. This is a collaborative, not competitive, program. Contact Professor Gloria Mari Beffa [email protected] or 263-1634 for more details about signing up, or watch for brochures at registration. ENGINEERING CLUB: NSBE Jr, SHPE Jr. and its UW affiliates, the National Society of Black Engineers and Society of Hispanic Engineers, welcome students of all backgrounds to explore engineering as a career path or just as something fun to try. We enter local and national competitions, support each other academically, and conduct outreach programs at Sherman, O’Keefe, and Blackhawk. Our focus for 2011-2012 will be technology and career options in alternative energy. Contact Ms. Chin, Mr. Cox, Mr. Lyons or Membership Chair Jonathan Graham about joining this year’s group. Many of our science staff have been busy with professional development activities during the summer. Some of the highlights include: Ron Welhoefer and Evan Gnam attended an AVID science strand workshop.. They were trained in how to infuse writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading strategies into science curriculum. Erin Parker participated in the Greater Madison Writing Project, a four-week class for teachers to research writing in the content areas as well as an opportunity for teachers to develop as writers themselves. She also took part in an Advanced Placement Summer Institute at the University of Maine for prospective teachers of AP Environmental Science, which will be offered in the fall of 2012. The science department is hoping to offer AP Environmental Science as a course in the 2012-2013 school year. Evan Gnam and Kelly Cox attended Advanced Placement Summer Splash in Wisconsin Dells. They were able to network with other current and prospective Advanced Placement science teachers and staff from across the state. Lori Schacht DeThorne spent a week with 15 other US and Canadian science teachers aboard the research vessel Lake Guardian on Lake Superior. She worked beside scientists and participated in Great Lakes research while also developing classroom activities relating to the Great Lakes and oceans. EAST HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER—AUGUST 2011 PAGE 28 Welcome to East! We in the Social Studies department look forward to seeing you in the classroom again in September. On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to introduce you to what we offer in our department. KEVIN ATTAWAY The heart of the East Social Studies department is our history courses. Freshmen are required to take and pass U.S. History 9, which covers the years 1865-1945: from the Reconstruction era to the end of World War Two. Sophomores are required to take and pass World History, which studies the history of humanity, from prehistory through the end of the twentieth century. Juniors are required to take and pass Modern American History, which covers the years of 1945-1991. Students may opt to take the standard required classes or they may choose the more challenging Honors (formerly TAG) courses. All East students must earn at least three credits from our department. The required classes add up to two-and-one half credits, with the remaining one-half credit to be earned during a student’s senior year by selecting at least one elective course. Our electives are wide-ranging, covering all aspects of the social sciences. The electives offered in Social Studies include: American Politics and Government; Ethnic Studies; History of Justice and Law; Women’s Studies; Contemporary Issues in the U.S. and the World; Latin American History; Social Psychology; History of Arts and Ideas; Wisconsin History; and Introduction to Economics. Another feature that our department is proud of is the range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses we offer. East’s Social Studies department offer AP classes in Psychology, Modern European History, American Government, Microeconomics, and Macroeconomics. These classes prepare students to take and pass these national standardized tests administered by the College Board each spring. Our goal in the Social Studies department is to develop the minds and the character of our students so that they will be active and productive members of society and dedicated stewards of our republic. We try to accomplish these goals by several methods: research and writing; evaluation and critique of sources; and developing sound arguments in a discussion format. We also engage in innovative and challenging activities, such as field trips to Aztalan State Park, competing in the Euro Challenge, winning the citywide Black History Bowl, participating in the Wisconsin Stock Market Simulation, and engaging in an English-Social Studies cooperative learning course. Again, welcome to East. We trust you will enjoy your years with us. We will miss them as they pass the torch to two new Spanish teachers, Sara Hagen and Katie Rozas-Fahrenkrug. Welcome to them both. You can read more about them in the new staff section of the newsletter. The trip is open to all World Language students. For more information, please contact Mr. Kempen at [email protected] . The World Language department promises a wide array of fun and enriching activities for students; travel, French and Spanish clubs, departmentwide activities, etc. Please look into all the opportunities offered to students. We're looking forward to another great year! After the huge success of the first Spain Morocco trip in spring 2010, teachers are planning a second trip for this upcoming spring.
