WELCOME
There is plenty to see and do for our
international guests on Queensland’s
Sunshine Coast.
This, combined with Lake Kawana’s world class facilities,
makes an ideal choice to host the 2016 World Sprint Titles.
Lake Kawana is located one hour north of the Brisbane
International and Domestic Airports with the Sunshine
Coast Airport just 15 minutes away, making the site easily
accessible for international travellers.
2
The 2000 metre buoyed Lake Kawana world-class facility
is perfect for flat water competitions with eight canoe or
kayak lanes or seven rowing lanes.
For the Va’a world sprints the lake will be set with dedicated
Va’a World Sprint lanes including an eight lane 500 metre
straight and a six lane 250 metre turns course.
Lake Kawana will be heavily used as a training ground by
international teams competing at the 2018 Commonwealth
Games to be held in Australia.

Our beautiful Sunshine Coast is looking
forward to welcoming the thousands of
competitors, their friends and family, and
spectators who will visit us for what will
be a memorable occasion - the 2016 Va’a
World Elite and Club Championships.
With an enviable climate and a wide range of outstanding accommodation options
and facilities, our region has built a proud reputation for being a world-class venue for
sporting events, especially on our picturesque beaches and waterways.
In 2016, we’re adding to our resume by hosting the 17th IVF Va’a World Elite and Club
Championships on Lake Kawana, a purpose-built facility perfect for staging flat water
competitions.
On our 2000 metre buoyed course, situated in the heart of the Coast, we will see the
world’s fastest paddlers from around 35 countries in action across 11 spectacular days
of competition.
As well as identifying the sport’s champions, these titles will ensure the continued
growth of the V1 discipline throughout Australia and the development of V1s in
emerging countries such as Malaysia.
Stay connected............................................................... 22
On a huge paddling calendar, the world titles will be soon followed by the International
Aussie Aito event and the National Marathon Titles later in May at Mooloolaba.
See you again................................................................... 24
We’re delighted that Lake Kawana will also be heavily used as a training ground
by competitors ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
While you are here, I invite you to take a look at our perfect beaches, the mystique and
beauty of our hinterland and check out our many varied towns and villages.

Because there are some of the best waves
in Australia thanks to perfectly peeling
point breaks on a seemingly endless
stretch of coastline.
WATERLIFE

Each year more than 8,000 humpback whales
travel along the east coast of Australia as part
of their migration.
Whale watching cruises operate from June to November,

Sunreef Mooloolaba also offers the amazing opportunity
to swim with the whales.
You will be able to see them frolicking with their young from
various locations including Point Arkwright, Point Cartwright,
Mount Coolum, Point Perry, Moffat Headland and Alexandra
Headland.
Other experiences to add to your ‘to do’ list include
feeding the dolphins at Tin Can Bay, diving down to the
wreck of ex-HMAS Brisbane, or diving at Wolf Rock with
grey nurse sharks.
There are many surf schools and stand
up paddle board schools across the coast
where you can experience the thrill of
riding your very first wave.
For the more proficient surfer there are
also a number of competitions and iconic
surf festivals that take place each year.
On the water
If you are looking for fun on the water - surfing, swimming or
cruising - you will find it on the Sunshine Coast. Feel the rush
as you sail, jet ski or water ski through clear, clean water, or fly
across the waves on a kite board.

Up in the air
Participate in every water sport imaginable: swimming, surfing, snorkelling,
scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing, boating, kite boarding and jet skiing. There
are plenty of coastal cycle paths, mountain biking trails, horse-riding trails, or
for those who prefer to keep their feet planted firmly on the ground, there are
excellent coastal and hinterland walking and hiking paths. Abseiling, rockclimbing, paragliding and skydiving are on offer for the adrenaline seeker, while
leisure sports like golf, sailing and fishing will appeal to everyone.
If you want to get off the beaten track, head for the Great Sandy National
Park and take to the beach in your four-wheel drive (4WD). Cruise along the
shoreline, marvel at the coastal cliffs and some coloured sands, throw in
your fishing line and catch yourself dinner. You’ll need a vehicle permit to
drive along the sand and there are some places where camping is restricted,
so be sure to check the signs before you set off on your adventure.
There are many hiking trails throughout the Sunshine Coast that are suitable
for walkers of all levels of fitness, from steep paths that offer breathtaking
mountain views, to easy strolls through bushland. An area of particular interest
for experienced hikers is the Glass House Mountains, while other peaks
worth climbing include Mount Cooroy, Mount Coolum and Mount Cooroora in
Pomona, which is home to the annual ‘King of the Mountain’ race.
Fly down the river on a jet ski, sail down the side of a rock face, defy
gravity as you kite board across the waves - experience the lighter side of
Sunshine Coast life.
