Dear Readers:
Southern California Notes columnist Mavis Manus
reports each month on the various events and profiles of the
Frosene
area taking place. This month, however, she devotes her entire
column to the amazing work of Dr. Vasili Berdoukas.
Phillips
The Los Angeles community, particularly Childrens
Editor
Hospital, benefited from Dr. Berdoukas’ expertise when he
joined his wife Consul General Elizabeth Fotiadou as she took up her recent
position there.
“Berdoukas is a man with a mission,” writes Manus. “And that is to reduce
to nil the number of babies born with the dreaded disease of thalassemia
major.” To learn more about Dr. Berdoukas as well as his message to the Greek
community, please turn to page 4.
In keeping with Los Angeles, once again the Los Angeles Greek Film
Festival was another success. There was plenty of red carpet action too.
Founder Ersi Danou and Angeliki Giannakopoulos have much to celebrate.
In addition to such notables as Jim Gianopulos, Gena Rowlands, Demetri
Martin and Alexander Payne, Giannakopoulos appreciated the support of
Consul General Fotiadou. “She and her husband cooked for 200 people on
closing night!” she shared. “Amazing!”
For complete coverage of the celebrated films and celebrities, please turn to
page 8.
The Biennial 40th Clergy-Laity Congress took place last month in
Atlanta, Georgia to the theme Gather My People to My Home – Come and See.
Archbishop Demetrios of America urged the delegates “to convey in detail
and in essence” all that transpired in this Clergy-Laity Congress back to their
parishes and their fellow brothers and sisters.”
Several resolutions were also presented and approved. For a detailed report,
please turn to page 7.
Finally, it is that time of year again when we invite you to join the HJ family
and have your name included on the cover of the October issue. Your support
is appreciated and helps the HJ continue to grow.
Last year we launched the HJ online as well as a Facebook page. With your
support, we continue to be the voice of our Hellenic community at large. You
can return the coupon on page 5 via mail, email or fax.

DR. VASILI BERDOUKAS
W
hen Consul General
Elizabeth Fotiadou
recently took the
reins of the Greek consulate
in Los Angeles she not only
brought ideas and projects
but the capability, energy and
imagination to carry them
out. Los Angeles has also
benefited from the knowledge
and expertise of her husband,
Dr. Vasili Berdoukas, who is
now consulting at Childrens
Hospital.
Berdoukas is a man with a
mission. And that is to reduce
to nil the number of babies
born with the dreaded disease of
thalassemia major.
“Those at risk of having
a child with thalassemia,” he
explains, “are couples who
originate from the belt of the
world stretching from Spain to
New Guinea, and Greece comes
smack in the middle of that.”
While even today there is no
cure, enormous strides have been
made to control and treat the
disease. From a life expectancy
of less than 10 years, now a
normal life span is possible.
Before, treatment required blood
transfusions approximately each
month as well as 5-7 infusions
though needles each week; today
treatment may soon be reduced
to one or two pills a day.
Berdoukas is a world specialist in
the disease and in the forefront
of its treatment.

who came from
Plomari in Mytilini (“best

Australia in the early 1920’s.
To please his family, Berdoukas
entered law school but after two
years he withdrew and began
the study of what had always
been his passion – medicine.
“After a year of practicing
adult medicine, I moved into
pediatrics and became interested
in blood diseases. It was there
I saw firsthand the terrible
suffering that thalassemia was
causing.” In London, an Irish
doctor, nicknamed ‘Queen of
Thalassemia’, Bernadette Modell,
was doing important research
with the strong support of the
British Health system, and he
was able to work with her for
a year. With so many Cypriots
living in the UK, there were
many patients with the disease. In Greece, where Berdoukas
then worked for a year, he found
that 290 babies a year were
born with the disease. One in
12 people in the country are

carriers of the disease; that is,
8% of the population. If two
carriers marry there is a one in
four chance of producing a child
with thalassemia major, a serious
blood disease which at that time
had a poor prognosis. Two out of
the four will be carriers and one
will be clear. The attitude of the
Greek government was “We can’t
afford to treat the disease; we are
going to prevent the disease.”
“The situation changed
dramatically in 1976, once
we were able to do prenatal
diagnosis and give the parents
the choice whether to continue
with the pregnancy.” Even more
effective, doctors carried out
population screening which
tested couples to see if they were
carriers. The result was that from
290 babies born each year with
thalassemia, the numbers are
now reduced to two or three.
Greece and Italy are now the
two most successful countries
in the world for thalassemia
treatment and are also in the
forefront of new technology.
The UK is another leader in this
field, thanks to its public health
scheme. British doctors involved
in the disease were astonished
that such massive strides could
be achieved in a small country
like Greece. Back in Sydney, Berdoukas
established a pre-natal testing
service, though he had to
approach things in a different
manner. In Australia there is a
stigma on those suffering from
thalassemia, so he worked with
obstetricians and gynocologists,
suggesting they do a simple
blood test on everybody to find
the carriers. Patients of Greek
origin showed the same ratio as
in Greece – 8% of those tested
were carriers. “We did a study
with AHEPA on people from
the island of Kythera – the
percentage was the same, but

Pension reform bill debate
Athens (ANA-MPA) -Parliament began a three-day
debate on the government’s draft
law reforming Greece’s pension
system for the public sector.
Employment minister
Andreas Loverdos tabled a
draft bill on reforming Greece’s
pension system for the public
sector in Parliament. Among the
key features of the new bill is
that it equalises retirement age
for men and women, gradually
abolishing rights previously held
by women to retire at an earlier
age if they had at least one child
under 18 or had three or more
children.
For a brief transitional period
between 2011-2013, both men
and women will have the right
to retire at a younger age based
on these rules, increasing from
50 years to 52 in 2011 and 55 in
2012, while from 2013 onward
the age of retirement for both
groups will be 65, regardless of
other factors.
Age of retirement will also be
equalized for men and women
with adult or no children based
on the new bill. Women in the
public sector currently have
the right to retire at 60 years,
compared to 65 for men. Under
the new rules, both men and
women will be able to retire at
61 in 2011, at 63 in 2012 and at
65 from 2013 onward.
The exception will be men
and women with handicapped
children, where from 2011 the

It also places those hired in
the public sector from 2011 in
the unified IKA pension system

the private sector in other ways,
establishing the same system of a

Los Angeles Greek Film Festival celebrates its winners
By Willard Manus
T
he recently concluded
fourth Los Angeles Greek
Film Festival (LAGFF)
offered an eclectic – and
sometimes controversial – slate
of films. Seventeen new works
were screened over a three-day
period which included an Industry
Program featuring one-on-ones
with such film execs as Matthew
Buzzell, Terry Dougas, John
D. Eraklis and Lynette Howell.
The Festival Founders, Angeliki
Giannakopoulos and Ersi Danou,
presented the Career Achievement
Award to Phaedon Papamichael,
the Greek-born cinematographer
whose many credits include Walk
the Line, Sideways, 3.10 to Yuma
and Knight and Day, starring Tom
Cruise and Cameron Diaz.
The festival jury named Plato’s
Academy as best feature, with 4
Black Suits taking the audiencefavorite award. Both were
comedies, the former a bitter-sweet

zenophobic Greek, is shaken to
his roots when he learns that he
might be part Albanian) the flatter
(written, directed and starring
Renos Haralambidis) on the goofy,
slapstick side.
The other two main features,
Black Field and Dogtooth, received
no prizes but stirred up the most
controversy. Black Field, written
and directed by Vardis Marinakis
(a graduate of London’s National
Film School), was set in 1650 and
told a dark, powerful story about
children cut off from the
world. It’s a microcosm of a
totalitarian society replete with
sadomasochistic sex, torture
and mind-control. Some
audience members at LAGFF
walked out of Dogtooth’s
screening, others applauded
it for its courage. It will be
interesting to see what the
general public’s reaction will
be when Kino International
releases Dogtooth on the artfilm circuit this summer.

announcement
Greek America Foundation to offer two full-tuition scholarships for semester-long study
abroad at the American College of Greece
T
he Greek America
Foundation recently
announced two scholarship
awards for full semester study at
the American College of Greece in
Athens for the 2010 Fall semester.
Although currently raising
money for an endowment with a
goal to send between 50 and 60
students annually, the foundation
decided to implement the
program immediately—especially
after supporters donated over
$25,000 during a spontaneous
“cash call” at a recent event of the
foundation.
The Greek America
Foundation is dedicated to the
promotion, preservation and
perpetuation of Greek culture,
history, heritage and ideals in
contemporary America. In
addition to an extensive series
of programming and special
events throughout the nation, the
foundation has recently launched
the Hellenic Legacy Scholarship
Fund, to provide scholarships
for semester-long study abroad
programs at the American College
of Greece, in Athens.
The study abroad scholarship
is one of the core components of
the mission of the Greek America
Foundation. Study abroad in
Greece provides an opportunity
for a truly transformative
experience during which time the
student not only gets to know
him/herself, but the relationship
to Hellenism and Greece to the
world around him/her.
The Greek America Foundation
is looking for U.S. or Canadian
university students with a
commitment to community
building and leadership who
wish to spend a semester abroad
in Greece. The purpose of the
Hellenic Legacy Scholarship is
to foster a love for Greece and
Hellenism in students who
are passionate about making a
difference in the world around
them. Our scholarship is not just
about your semester in Greece, but
how Greece and Hellenic heritage
inspires you to transform your
community.
Unlike other structured
programs and guided academic
tours, we are seeking an
independent-minded student who
wishes to immerse him/herself into
the heart of an ancient capital city
and an educational institution that
is comprised of over 3,000 Greek
and international students.
Although all coursework at
the American College of Greece
is conducted in English and the
school provides a purely American
campus experience, it is our hope
that the student will immerse him/
herself into Greece by getting to
know the country, her people and
her history and heritage.
The American College of
Greece in Athens is the oldest
and largest U.S.-sponsored higher
education institution in Europe.
With a legacy of over 135 years
of quality U.S. education abroad,

ELEGANT EVENT
The American College of
Greece (ACG) recently hosted
a dinner on the waterfront in
Seattle to acquaint Washington
State Greek Americans to the
constituent Deree and Pierce
Colleges of the ACG which is
celebrating its 135th Anniversary
in 2010. ACG is the oldest
and largest U.S. accredited
institution of higher learning
in all of Europe. Founded in
1875 in Smyrna, Asia Minor,
by Congregational women
missionaries from Massachusetts,
the girls’ school has evolved into
a comprehensive co-educational
college that serves Greek and
international students from high
school through post-graduate
studies. In 1923 after the 1922
catastrophe in Asia Minor, the
school moved to Athens at the

Accompanied by his wife,

His long term goals for the

connections with American

American institutions, since the
roots of ACG are American,
with classes at Deree taught in
English and professors holding
advanced degrees from America
or England. (3) to offer an
avenue for Greeks in America
to preserve their identity, as the
generations increase away from
the Motherland. In concluding
his remarks, Dr. Horner pictured
